No worries JavaJones -  According to the web site,http://www.michaelconnally.com/, you buy the real deal at Target!

And here is a shorter, less exciting video: http://www.stormlauncher.com/

This is way cool.  A nice idea and it works pretty well.

http://news.com.com/DNS+service+promises+safer%2C+faster+browsing/2100-7355_3-6092980.html?tag=nefd.top

OpenDNS says its free address-lookup service makes Web sites load faster, and that it blocks malicious, data-thieving phishing schemes and other threats. Furthermore, the service corrects obvious typos in URLs, sending people to the site they intended to visit, it says.

To pay for it, though, the company serves up ads and a search page, instead of an error page, if the user enters a Web address that doesn't exist or can't be corrected. The approach is similar one used in an unpopular VeriSign service called Site Finder, which was pulled soon after its launch in 2003.

Developer's Corner / Re: DNS Service
« on: July 11, 2006, 12:58 PM »
Just to clarify, DNS Made Easy is used as the Name Server for Hosted Domains.   They do not allow you to use their DNS Server for resolving your outgoing surfing.  They become the Authoritative Source for Name Resolution on your domains.

I'm currently hosting about 15 domains with them.

I actually used to use a free DNS service (can't recall which one) and things were pretty good.  Their interface was a little clunky and you had to create your own DNS records, just like creating a DNS Record for hosting your own.  Too much PITA for me.  They only had 2 DNS Servers in the mix and actually had a system failure for a few days that took my sites down. (The sites were up, just no DNS for them)  But heck, the price was right :)

Developer's Corner / DNS Service

One important note up front:  I will make a whopping $5.00 if you subscribe to this service.
Second note: I'd tell you the same thing if I didn't.

DNS Made Easy is a DNS plus other stuff service provider.  I have been using them for many years and have had ZERO problems.  I mention this because I have friends and acquaintances who have wasted many hours of their lives sweating over DNS and Mail Server issues, when they really didn't have to.

Yes you can host your own DNS or use the one from your ISP.  If that makes you happy, go for it.  I started using DNS Made Easy when I hosted web sites out of my house.  DNS is notorious for it's ugly configuration and it's terrible security.  I didn't want to learn to write DNS configs or keep up with the daily security patches, so I tried DNS Made Easy.  They have a nice web interface, with lots of pretty pictures and little help wizards.

The also provide Backup Email Services, Full Email Services and a few other neat things.  They are all reasonably priced and, as I said before, I have had ZERO problems.

They claim 100% uptime on DNS and I believe them.

Here is the link that pays me: http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com/u/6573

Feel free to ask me any questions or just visit their site.  I hope you save yourself some hassle.

Why Middle Class Mothers and Fathers Are Going Broke
There were over 1.6 million bankruptcy filings last year, up 7.4 percent from the previous year. And according to a new book, more people will end up in bankruptcy this year than will suffer a heart attack, than will be diagnosed with cancer or graduate from college, and it’s not who you would think. Elizabeth Warren is a Harvard law professor and bankruptcy expert and discusses these findings in her new book “The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers and Fathers Are Going Broke.” She discusses the book on “Today.” Read an excerpt here:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3079221/

It's interesting to me to see how many people think a "good job" is "safe."  The problem seems to be relying on the 2 incomes for normal stuff.  A good read of "Who moved my cheese" and/or "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" could help a lot of people avoid these situtations.   :two:

Borland C++ Builder Contest / Re: Vortex Chat - Client Version

I just tried the latest verson:

1) Renox wasn't around to talk to   but I've tried that part before so it's all good.  :P
2) The media player is very simple to use and works quite well.  It's a nice little feature.
3) The user login needs a little clean up the first time you use it.  You have to select <new user> from the drop down box to create a new account.  Then drop down again to select the new account.  Just a minor issue, but should be fixed for maximum ease of use.

Looking good Renox,  keep at it :)

That's excellent advice.

Did you just save your bacon?  That sounded a little like "Man I'm glad I did this, otherwise I'd be totally screwed right now."   :P

@Mouser - Can you (or one of your minions) mock up a user interface for this?

The actual make-the-site-from-the-templates-and-content part of this seems pretty straight forward.  The tricky bits will be what you expect users to see and do.  I think it would be beneficial to mock up a few parts of the UI for a couple of reasons:
1) It would help us define some of the details
2) It might help us group some components and distribute them among developers.

I must be getting used to Hollywood effects; the video looked pretty silly to me.

The asteroid looked to be about the size of the USA.  I really don't think I care to know the exact details of that type of collision; I'll just assume I'll be dead shortly after impact.

are you looking for Windows streaming server or Linux?  Linux servers are availble...not sure about Winders...
Google?

He makes some good points.  I never really paid that much attention to how Wikipedia works, but the absolute anarchy of it, is pretty stupid IMHO.

Let it die, I say.

Hmm... did they outlaw usenet (news) as well?

Seems to me, the law will always be behind the technology.  Tunneling, new protocols, etc.  We've got more tricks than they do. :)

That's were I was.... I lasted about 3 minutes of that and died.

Actually, if you read the article, it says the fine for getting caught is = the license for the software being swapped.  So Free software should = $0.00 fine.
