Living Room / Re: Where does the power go when I save it?
« on: June 08, 2008, 12:38 PM »
Now I know that in Holland there is an active and independend governing body, that makes sure every company that supplies to the grid and every company that takes from the grid are in balance (keeping the score to 1, what goes in must come out). If this score is any other value than 1 it will seek out the "culprit" and hands out heavy fines (from several 100.00 Euro's to the bankrupting kind).

Because of this, most companies use software to detect patterns of behavior in power consumption so nothing is wasted. Luckily most of those "power-off" days are pre-planned so everyone can take this into account, but as it is unknown how many people will participate it will also disrupt the balance.

And guess what...the fine that is payed will just increase the rates from the companies supplying to the grid, meaning it will come out of the pocket of all users. :(

Which is why (in Holland) it is promoted to use energy at night, so grid supplying companies can spread the load over 24 hours instead of the hours that most people are awake. This way, their efficiency in supplying power will go up.

Ofcourse we rock!!!  (see my hairdo?   ;D)

Before my defection to the Directory Opus camp...I always used Magellan Explorer http://www.enriva.com. Bought version 2 of that one at the time for 20 USD (upgrade from the freeware/adware version).

Used it exclusivly for two years and then I learned that my favorite filemanager from the Commodore Amiga was available for PC as well....and never looked back since ;)

TestDisk.....yep, the force is strong with this one. Unfortunately it is alo misguided. Indeed, there is no GUI, but it makes up for it with quite fast retrieval of data that you thought was long gone.

All the times I have used it (version 6.5, if memory serves me right) quickly a pile of information was retrieved using the naming convention "File%number%.%original extension%". It took me hours to find my lost file011223.doc.

Don't know if I missed a setting of some sorts, but this software is not for the time-challenged ones among us.  :tellme:

You can try SpiceWorks Desktop http://www.spiceworks.com/...Install it on one system only and it will hunt down a lot specs from all the computers it can reach through the local network. SpiceWorks has a nice web-based interface, is agent-less and very simple to setup.

Totally agree with Deozaan on this one...I will gladly waver away any kind of support/guarantee plan from any laptop manufacturer even if that means sacrificing the rescue partition!

My laptop...my personal treasure chest so to speak. Get the (hardware) drivers from the original installation and start over from scratch. Now I have to say that I don't have (or see) any problem with using an copied Windows CD (the same version as was installed on the laptop originally!) using the Windows registration code provided on the bottom. In my point of view the license is payed for, and I can use whatever installation CD as long as it is the same version/edition (in my case an OEM Win2000).

Maybe that is why my HP Omnibook 6000 (PIII-500MHz-128MbRAM) still does a good job. No crap of any kind and that includes useless baggage as hardware specific software from the manufacturer as well! Using only the essential software you need on it and the life of your laptop will be greatly extended.

The only upgrade and re-install I did (after 6 years!) was changing its 6Gbyte harddisk for a 40Gbyte one. But in the mean time it has been a real lifesaver on many occasions.

Personally, my Logitech MX500 has more or less the same amount of buttons than the Saitek mouse.

Let's just say that I like the mouse. But not becuase of the buttons   ;D

You can find current and older versions of lots of applications (including AVG) here http://www.filehippo.com/

Kinda moot point, because an older version of anti-virus software without updated signature files is not that useful at all. Besides that, I find it a very good habit to always keep the installation files of any software that deserved it's place onto my computer.

As I had to install the latest version from AVG on a friend''s computer as well...and seeing how it has become...from "servant"-mode (does its work behind the scenes) to "fully armored bodyguard"-mode (affecting practically everything you do)...I quickly ran to look at the options from the competitors of AVG.

Avira AntiVir http://www.free-av.com is what replaced AVG on my system. Avast! didn't make it because of its interface...it does the same as the interface from AVG 8, both really stupify the end user.

Ah well, maybe ClamWin http://www.clamwin.com should be on my system. It is open source and has the least obtrusive interface of them all  :)

/ (not so) offtopic
Seems I can top you all...on one of my PC's there are files that have a size of 35 Gbyte...

But thanks for the tip of not using this defragger on big files.

General Software Discussion / Re: What is your boot time?
« on: May 31, 2008, 03:25 AM »
Again, I should have explained my situation better.

The harddisk from the server made some strange repetative noise for a while and then the machine started to reboot by itself. This was the second harddisk in roughly two weeks, so the conclusion was that the crashing harddisk was the result from another failure.

A decision to replace both harddisk and mainboard was quickly made. I managed to copy the content from the crashing harddisk onto the new one (thank you http://www.hdclone.com ) and connected it to the new mainboard from a different manufacturer.

The new PC would not boot into Windows (as expected ofcourse), so trying the option from mr. Langa could not do me (more) harm. After following the instructions to the letter, this system now not only boots into Windows, it does this very fast (1 minute with quickboot disabled in the BIOS).

Because of all this, I thought the method could work wonders for the slowly booting machine from Curt.

You are right about the necessity from an occasional re-installation f0dder, but I try to postpone that for as long as possible. My day-to-day PC is running for three years without a re-install and I do a lot of software "play-testing" on that PC. ;)

Living Room / Re: Hosting options for new website
« on: May 30, 2008, 10:53 PM »
If you don't mind storing your site over the sea...The Dutch based http://www.hosting2go.nl is a very capable provider that has managed to put up several sites from me within 24 hours (incl. domain)...for the pricey sum of 40 euro's a year. They support the Joomla CMS, unlimited email, unlimited sub-domains, PHP, MySQL...all the basic are there.

This is their cheapest offer, so expect a lot more for spending a little more money. As you might or might not know, the internet infrastructure in Holland is extremely good (enough redundancy to guarantee a lot of uptime).  :)

@ Curt:
Indeed, it is a shame you don't have a XP installation CD.

There is a method with which you can repair your XP installation without re-installing (almost) all your applications. I once saw this method being described by the legend Fred Langa (and making a personal copy from that information).

Last week that personal copy became personal experience, because it was used to save a crashed system. I can tell you that this method worked beautifully, saving me at least 32 hours not having to install/configure an Oracle database server and uploading several backups from databases.

I believe the article was on the Informationweek website.

Although the following link is not the article I meant, it is very handy to keep around:
http://www.informati...?articleID=185301251

However, if all else fails, I can mail the word document to you.

Ah, you are in luck, the article (with clear instructions and pictures) is still there:

Google with the following term:

"IE6eolasNT"

or "IE6eolas"

These should get you stand alone versions from IE. At least that version is running on my XP system.

Ha!

Good news (for me that is)...doing the manual deleting from registry does work when logged in with the default Administrator account and the help of mr. Restart.

First I tried with a user account that had administrator rights assigned, but it seems there is still a (small) difference between those types of users.

Kinda silly from me to not to try this before, but I was under the impression that with Administrator rights assigned there are no differences.

Ah well, live and learn...

Many thanks to everybody who pointed me in the right direction

The teachers from my technical school were a lot more strict. For any grammatical and/or spelling and/or formatting error one full point less for the report you created....yep, no more A's for them youngsters anymore.

Their reasoning was that you have to be able to write a report that had to be readable by anyone in the chosen field of the profession (from the technical person till the chairman of the board). Not being able to write in a proper fashion will lead to disrespect from your peers (and people higher in the "food chain") as well.

Ah well, the inability to write correctly with the latest generation (script kiddies)....makes it quite easy to recognize the spam they send out to mailboxes. I sometimes have a good laugh at what is written to lure me into something  ;)

The service is located in the following locations:
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_(blahblahservice)
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet004\Enum\Root\LEGACY_(blahblahservice)
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet004\Services
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_(blahblahservice)
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

Even after granting myself the correct permissions to remove every registry entry from the list above...the "orphans" do not want to leave my "castle".  Even mr. Restart cannot drive them away :(

Sorry Carol, that doesn't do the trick either. However, it now showed a reference code so I'll guess Googling will do me some good.

Unfortunately the sc command I tried already, it's error says:
"The specified service does not exist as an installed service."

I should have told that my system runs on Windows XP Professional (SP1).

Removing them manually with regedit does not work either.  :(

In Windows it is possible to install/register your own service that in turn are added to the (already extensive) list of Windows services
(something like: blahblahserver /install,  NET START blahblahserver).

Reversing these steps also lets you unregister/uninstall services (something like: NET STOP blahblahserver, blahblahserver /uninstall)

Normally I use batch script for both steps.

Over time the batch scripts do their work without reporting an error. Taking a look with Sysinternal's Process Explorer also shows that the services are available when they need to be an not. But when I take a look at the Windows service list, the service(s) are still there.

My question is this: does anybody here know some software to remove those 'orphan' services from the Windows service list?

Living Room / Re: How hot is too hot? Overclocking thoughts...
« on: May 20, 2008, 08:31 PM »
Well Lashiec, here in Paraguay the ambient temperature is 35 degrees (celcius) or higher for about 60% of the total year. Watercooling is an serious option over here, because moving air that itself is already 35 to 50 degrees hot does not cool the equipment that well.

It is only my fear of leaking watercooling systems that prevent me from installing one. On the other hand, changing all coolers every 6 months because of reliability issues is also a hassle.  You cannot get the good brands for a reasonable price here in Paraguay, and I have lost already two mainboards and 5 SATA harddisks.  :(

When following the topics from DonationCoder, one can notice that a lot registry hacks are passed on.

For the ones that do not (want to) know their way around the registry, but still regards himself/herself as a (more or less) power user, there is a tool that wraps all these kind of hacks (and then some!) in a clear GUI.

Speaking for myself, since I learned about the existence of this tool years ago (1999 or so) there was no need to look at anything else. Not even the unsupported Microsoft tools to easily edit the registry can even hold a candle against this one.

What is even more beautiful from this tool is that it enables you to include your own registry hack in the GUI. and you can post it on their forum as well so others can use your hack as well. Get it at http://www.x-setup.net.

Back then I was the senior (and only  ;) ) editor for the download section of a Dutch ISP (500.000 members) when I found out about this tool. Until version 6.6 it was freeware. Today the version number is already at 9 but at US20 dollar it has still an extremely good price/performance ratio.

(Not intended as spam or anything, I am not affiliated in any other way than being an extremely happy customer)

Confiscating laptops for their contents is clearly a form of thought policing, and almost equivalent to book burning.

Aha! So from all the people that have experienced burning laptops....the governments sneakily replaced the batteries from those laptops. Now it becomes clear to me!

How is that for an inspector Clouseau impersonation?   ;D

More on topic:
Me and my brother were born and raised in Holland. While growing up life happened causing my brother to live the life of a thief. Me however was the example of a good citizen, paid my taxes, didn't escape the draft, always working, etc. etc. Than in an unguarded moment my brother lends my (first) car and he was caught checking out a "prospect".

Now I have to mention that every policeman/woman in Holland needs to have a certain amount of money on tickets each month (or will be fired), so anyone driving on the road gets stopped a lot nowadays. And with my brothers criminal record I have spent hours on police stations afterwards over the years explaining myself because cops think I am guilty of association...

It became even impossible to get any decent work anymore because of all this, so when I saw the opportunity I left for South America (yes, I see some irony here). Although Holland is not a police state, for me it became one already without having done anything wrong.
