General Software Discussion / Re: How do you launch stuff?
« on: September 21, 2007, 03:54 PM »
for RL things... I tend to use rocket fuel to launch them;
for software... I use bbLean and the hotkey plugins :]

I love bblean's tear-off menus!  :-* :P

What is even funnier about some posts in this thread is that back then Google was definitely the Evil Empire to all there in Opera land! A simple request by any user there was enough to bring the wrath of every Opera faithful - especially the moderators - because Google was seen as even a bigger threat to personal freedom and privacy than Microsoft! I saw posts there that were horribly vitriolic by long-standing members. Yet when a "rebellious poster" got even a little sarcastic he/she would be immediately banned.

Now they have a $50 M deal with Google? I'm just about rolling around laughing!!

Speaking of which - the Google Groups tree view is borked in the alpha version.  >:(

Living Room / All your info in one place
« on: September 21, 2007, 05:51 AM »
From Web Worker Daily

Those of us who use the web all day long, every day, probably have signed up for at least a couple dozen different information services, all with different login information, all storing different information for us.

We might have a to-do manager, a contact manager, a bookmarking service, a project management service, a wiki, multiple email accounts, lists, multiple online documents, or one of the many other services available for managing our information.

Trouble is, that can make things a bit disorganized. Our information is spread through various sites and services, some of which we use infrequently. We might not remember where everything is, and even if we do, it takes a minute or so to locate it, login, and access the information.

You can simplify this and keep yourself organized in one simple step: keep all your information in one place.

It doesn’t matter where that place is, as long as it works well for you and you use it regularly. But just this single act will keep all your information at your fingertips, and keep you organized in a way you may never have been before.

So how do you do it? Here are some suggestions:

1. Pick a location. There are many places you could use for your info. Google Docs, a wiki that you can keep on your own server or on a flash drive, Backpack, a plain old paper notebook, a binder, any list service, an email account, a secure web site, Evernote, Google Notebook, a text file. Actually, any place you can store info works … just choose one that works well for you. I recommend something searchable, and if you use multiple computers, something online.

So What works for Your "One Place?"

BTW, the author of this piece has a bolg called Zen Habits which is a great source of ideas for living simply.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Auto-Tile open windows.

try moving the taskbar to the left hand side, make it wider, then make the background transparent (would need tool). then use auto-tile :) comes close i think.

Kinda, sorta. I do put the taskbar on the side when I have to use plain Windows, but I prefer to use bbLean as a shell, and that doesn't support the Windows tiling commands >:( Gridmove works though, and it has its own workspaces.  :-*

How about an app that would run in the systray and each time a window would open it would Auto-Tile, (auto fit) the new window with all of the currently open windows.  So with each new opened window all of the other windows are still visible, but smaller of course, and re-tiled so that they all fit the screen.

Probably the snarkiest part would be to decide which method to tile, ...

A idea inspied by the Oberon window manager:

Maintain two columns of windows, spanning the entire width of the screen.
Windows take the width of the column they are in (fixed width windows are centred).
The width of a single column can be manually adjusted from 0-100%, and all displayed windows adjust to suit.

New windows, by default, open at the  top of the teft column, taking any extra vertical space equally from any other open windows in the column.

Maximised windows take up the whole column height; minimised windows are reduced to a title bar.

Moving a window moves it to the other column and/or inserts it at a new positionwithin the column using the rules above.

Feasible?
