Living Room / New Ipod/ cleaning mp3s
« on: January 08, 2009, 01:48 AM »

I just bought my first Ipod. 120GB classic. I mean to fill it with my cd collection (ok, partly fill it :)).
But I also have a bunch of random songs on my computer which come from questionable sources.
The question is: is there any danger in transferring these to the Ipod, and how can this be avoided? I was thinking of running them through a program like Super(c) and changing format to clean them of any other data, I don't know if this helps?

Also, what other sync programs do you reccommend? Or should just stick with Itunes? Usless 65.5MB download.....seriously, couldn't they put it on the ipod, or on a cd, or anything??????
I'm on a 500 a month plan, and what about people on dialup??????

I'll see how I like it when I finally get it down. But I don't hold much hope, I never did like apple, and I think this will just justify it.....

Good on you, all the info you all freely gave to idiots like me now won you an award.

See, "what you have done to the least of my brothers.................."

You're all legends

Darn, why isn't her screen name on that shirt as well? :-* :P

This year I have resolved to be less sensible and responsible, and since I brought the new year in in a state of inebriation for the first time, it looks like I might succeed....

I also want to go Base jumping, :-\
Move away from home to find a hard work/high paying job
Do lots of flying (I got my pilot's license)
Get serious about learning to code.

And start a band if I could. Best I'll get to is busking with a friend when we meet at music festivals.

Oh well, Base jumping is the important part.

and, yeah, a girlfriend might be fun as well. but it might conflict with other hobbies. :P

I never thought of that, that would show them back at my usual online home, if I ditched them for the thing that got me in trouble.

Nah, I'll take the advice of p3lb0x

I find if you can do anything with wood carving, it always goes down well with anyone above the age of really young.
If you take a nice peice of board, then trace something like a horse on it (just use Google images until you find something which works as a line drawing), draw the horse and surrounds in black paint (oil based) then laquer the whole lot. Takes a couple of hours, cost nothing much of you have scrap board and a bit of laquer floating around...... Looks excellent, and it lasts.

Thats cool.....
Reminds me of what Joseph Licklider predicted.
Years before the internet he already predicted e-commerce, and he also said (partly tounge in cheek) that small items could be instantly delivered in a network of plastic tubes. Well, he wasn't always right, but he was a lot closer than most people were.

Very influential in PC evolution.

Developer's Corner / Re: Where to start with computer programing
« on: November 05, 2008, 04:55 AM »
I'm learning/trying to learn programming. And was going well in AHK Programming School until SOMEONE put in a killer question which effectively killed me.

But I want to keep going, however I'm one of those people with so little time that if it isn't useful, I won't bother.
I want to make add-ons for web bowsers. Things like blockers, form filler in'ers, and whatever else I can think of.
Cloud computing means browsers will be as important as OSs.

So where do I start, and am I biting off more than I can chew (as usual)?

Where the bloody hell are we?
Inside joke

Seriously, that would be a typical stupid government thing to do. I mean, I'm sure everyone on this site could get around it, the principle of the thing is just totally wrong.

Quick, vote in someone sensible. Wait a sec, there is no-one sensible to vote for......

I'll show them at scrabble now

If it works well I'll share it,
I'll see.

Developer's Corner / Dictionary, list of words, etc.
« on: October 18, 2008, 12:26 AM »
Hi,
I'm not a very good programmer, but I wanted to make myself something which is sort of a scrabble practise game. Basically it finds a random word, then mixes up the letter and asks me what it is.

So far I have got an AHK script which works on words up to 7 letters long, which will scramble the letters, and a gui to make it useable.
I just need a list of all available words.
(then need to find a way to select a random one.....computers don't like random..)
Anyone know of such a resource?
Of course I could just use a few wordy letters/wepages/e-books, but I want to do it properly..

Thanks

Living Room / Re: What Sports Do You Participate In?
« on: September 28, 2008, 05:33 AM »
I rely on soft ground, and good practise of falling off. Once you know how, its safe enough.  :)

Actually bareback riding is a lot safer in my opinion, no risk of being dragged with a foot stuck, just try to land on something soft......

BTW, I do carry accident insurance (had to for my job) but I didn't go into details when I said I ride horses......

BTWW circle work is in there for a joke, it's the Australian country young people's hobby of driving pickups (we call them utes) in circles kicking up dust and wearing out tyres. And having fun.
(and learning valuable driving skills for when you accidentally start skidding....)

What about fishing?

And spearfishing?

And flying? (I own a light plane [or rather, it owns me])

And horse riding? The proper kind, just a bridle, and going wild across the paddocks.......

And circle work in souped up utes?

How many of them qualify as sport?

Economic failure?
In australia we have a great failure with the cross-city tunnel.
But as someone pointed out: statistically even the harbour tunnel is an economic failure. Yet imagine if we didn't have it.......

Somehow those things repay the community, even if not directly.

191
I'm just hopeing that,as usual, beaurocracy will win: we'll have all the photos, and not be able to do anything with them.
Interestingly, it was our local cop's wife who got caught when driving home with a group of friends, the interesting part was they must have been under a few drinks, because she claimed in court that they couldn't remember who was driving so it was unfair to fine anyone in particular.

She was let off because she had made an honest attempt to find out, and couldn't......

This is gossip, so I'm not sure of its accuracy, but it sounds right.

192
I agree with Deozaan, I have a Facebook which says "see my MySpace" and a Bebo which says the same, and if any of my friend are on another network, I'll register and say the same thing....

Living Room / Re: Looking for a few good puns
« on: September 13, 2008, 10:53 PM »
Good timing, someone just emailed me a stack...
Here goes:

1. Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn't much, but the reception was excellent.

2. A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, "I'll serve you, but don't start anything."

3. Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a salted.

4. A dyslexic man walks into a bra.

5. A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm and says:
"A beer please, and one for the road."

6. Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: "Does this taste funny to you?"

7. "Doc, I can't stop singing 'The Green, Green Grass of Home.'"
"That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome."
"Is it common?"
Well, "It's Not Unusual."

8. Two cows are standing next to each other in a field. Daisy says to Dolly, "I was artificially inseminated this morning." "I don't believe you," says Dolly. "It's true, no bull!" exclaims Daisy.

9. An invisible man marries an invisible woman. The kids were nothing to look at either.

10. DejaMoo: The feeling that you've heard this bull before.

11. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn't find any.

12. A man woke up in a hospital after a serious accident. He shouted,
"Doctor, doctor, I can't feel my legs!"
The doctor replied, "I know you can't - I've cut off your arms!"

13. I went to a seafood disco last week...and pulled a mussel.

14. What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh.

15. Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says "Dam!"

16. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

17. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse.
"But why," they asked, as they moved off. "Because", he said, "I can't stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer."

18. A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named "Ahmal." The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him "Juan." Year's later; Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, "They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal."

19. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him. (Oh, man, this is so bad, it's good)..... A super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

20. And finally, there was the person who sent twenty different puns to his friends, with the hope that at least ten of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.

21. Did you hear the one about the vulture at the airport? He tried to take two dead possums on the plane but the gate agent told him he was only allowed one carrion item.

22. Have you heard about the agnostic, dyslexic, insomniac? He stays up all night pondering whether there is a dog.

23. One of the main objections to windmill farms is that birds flying through them are likely to be killed. They become shredded tweet.

24. A three legged dog walks into a saloon in the Old West. He slides up to the bar and announces: “I’m looking for the man who shot my paw.”

25. A small boy swallowed some coins and was taken to a hospital. When his grandmother telephoned to ask how he was a nurse said ‘No change yet’.

26. The butcher backed up into the meat grinder and got a little behind in his work.

27. What’s the definition of a will? (It’s a dead giveaway).

28. She used to have a boyfriend with a wooden leg, but she broke it off.

29. Show me a piano falling down a mineshaft and I’ll show you A-flat minor.

30. I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me.

31. Two silk worms had a race. They ended up in a tie.

32. A scientist doing a large experiment with liquid chemicals was trying to solve a problem when he fell in and became part of the solution.

Living Room / Re: Open DNS is s***ware
« on: September 10, 2008, 06:10 AM »
Interesting: here's a status update.....
After going back to ISP DNS firefox started getting Page Not found Errors, which it had been getting before, but only on FF3, 2 was alright, and Windows Live Messenger also started playing up, no surprises there.

So I am back on it, but know to change it when things play up.

I believe these problems have to do with the fact that me net connection is through 2-way satellite, which has a few problems. Gaming is impossible due to connection lag, even on fast plans.
But it also could have to do with some form of rot, I have used this computer very intensively for a few years, and she needs a clean up. and reinstall, some services no longer work (WMI)

So maybe Open DNS isn't too bad, but it seems to play up with Myspace, so I'll just have to make a macro to change it over, might be hard, any help?

Might try treewalk someday

Living Room / Open DNS is s***ware
« on: September 09, 2008, 08:18 AM »
I read one article on www.ask-leo.com and it advocated Open DNS for security reasons. So I decided to try it out. I can't say I noticed any performance increase of any kind, but what happened was that
a: when it couldn't go to the sitein the address bar, it would gi to its own search page. Prick.
b: it wouldn't play the streaming music on MySpace. It stopped at about 13 secs (luckily I'm not superstitious).

So I scrapped it,and all is good now.

I also found out that Google Web accelerator blocks Myspace Mp3 Gopher, but since I shouldn't be using it anyway, I won't boast about it.

It works now.

So be careful with Open DNS, and GWA, neither of them did any noticeable good, and a bit of bad.....

Thanks for help,

it isn't dangerous at all, we are just friends, at the moment anyway, haven't know each other long.

But maybe it is interesting subject for all us young singles: can a relationship survive where one person is geeky, and the other can't understand why you use the Start button to turn a computer off....?

BTW, I think I'll tell her she was right: it wasn't funny. Sort of win-when you-lose scenario.  ;)
