Another program that comes to mind is AZZcardfile https://www.azzcardfile.com/
I'm not sure about the index card analogy. It looks just like an outliner. Am I wrong?

Certainly outliners were my main tool for actually writing for a long time.

It might be the connection was not there. In its day it was a pretty powerful database.   What was nice is it allowed you to put a variety of information on a card in a free-form way- much like you would put information on an index card.  Looking at the images of the new version it looked like it was possible it was moving in a free form direction that embraced the touch interface on android.

Again the connection might not be there.

...I started by looking at writers' sites. That was a depressing experience.  Simple storyboards and a host of self-inflicted hamster wheels. ....

"Self inflicted hamster wheels"

I cannot agree with this strong enough- though I have not looked deeply.    I am curious if you looked at liquid Story Binder?
It seems like it might have the best  trello card system with their story boards...  You can see below...  not sure about the hamster wheels...
https://www.blackobelisksoftware.com/XE/Screenshot6.jpg

I have not had a chance to check out Wavemaker any more deeply.

If zotero or civita (spelling) had a way to export notes and highlighted text to some sort of note card, that would be awesome.  What is nice about these applications is they can pull metadata from sources. The aim of these utilities are to site sources when writing and not (to my knowledge) processing and refining the information you collect.

128

So I have read Rizvi's post and I am familiar with PARA...  I had some comments- Which might be misplaced because I have not followed this thread entirely.   This person strikes me as someone who is also on a search for the perfect way to organize their notes and learn.  I can respect that.

Just a look at a few quotes where Rizvi explains his move from zettelkasten to PARA. I think it contains a number of common misconceptions of the zettelkasten system.

I love reading. But retaining what I read tends to be a challenge. I usually walk away from a book feeling good but with only a faint idea of what was in there.
Herein is I think the core of his problem. Zettelkasten is specifically not about retaining the content of what has been read - it's about retaining thoughts about the content.

As I mentioned, I used something similar to zettlkasten.  It was all about the process.  In it you would initially accumulate alot of cards- with different types of information (ie historical dates, themes, epiphanies, ideas, connections, future readings etc etc). During this part of the process you might have an aim for your work- which would determine your approach to the cards. However this was just the first part.  It was in the Sorting, adding additional notes, refining the notes, rewriting the notes or otherwise  interacting with the notes that you could develop your ideas and more.  It was very time consuming,  and it was sometimes hard to know how many note cards were too many note cards:)  In the end it would be very dynamic. A note with a historical fact was destined to become a flash card simply by writing a question on the back of the note.  Other notes could be arranged based on the themes to make up sections of a paper.

There is an older program called Writers's Blocks https://www.writersb.../wb5trialrequest.htm
It allows you to play around with trello like cards of information with the aim of arranging them into sections of a paper. In my opinion, it is too singular.  I wish there was a capture the information in some sort of system and play with the information- interact and develop it.  This aim of writer's block dominates the type of play one is capable of with the note cards. I want more.

Another program that comes to mind is AZZcardfile https://www.azzcardfile.com/  A number of years ago I was pretty happy to see there was work on an android application.  There were a number of ways to export the cards and I thought about exporting and then importing to something like Writer's blocks.

My issue is that I really want to be able to include video and audio in my system.  I want multi-media.  I do not want to link to a youtube video and that is what most systems do.  Nearly All of my links from the earlier years of the internet are broken which is very sad.  I also cannot use a system like trello as I am not in control of the data.  I cannot have my data in the cloud.  There are self hosted trello alternatives- through nextcloud etc that I have not explored.

Its core idea is to create atomic notes, where each note is about exactly one topic (not more than a few paragraphs tops)
By definition, something that takes two paragraphs is more than one thought. Two paragraphs will also contain associations that make the note cumbersome to use.

I sometimes want to capture concepts in my notes.  Which can be as many as 4 paragraphs to explain:)

If you take a lot of notes, the stream of incoming notes can quickly leave you overwhelmed.
The idea was being selective, both in what was read and the notes taken. They had to be worthwhile and had to be separate. There shouldn't be an overwhelming stream.

This is difficult.  I find the easiest way to limit what I am taking notes on is by focusing on what I am aiming to produce. However,  this often means I need to go back and revisit a resource- if I later on I need to produce something different.

I used a system when I was in school that was very similar to zettelkasten where you used index cards to take notes.   Much of the process was refining, catalogueing and playing with the cards. Their edges would be all bent, there would be tears from the rubber bands used to bind them together and there would be markups and additions from various colored pens.   I think that is the thing that is missing from the systems I have seen.  It seems like one should be able to more easily "play" with the cards.

130
Just tonight I stumbled upon a piece of software that was very cards oriented and I could not help but think of zettelkasten.
It is called Wavemaker

You can find a number of video explainers here.
It is a web app that can run offline.  You can run it on any chrome (possibly other browser) and export import the section you are working on or the entire database.

"Snowflake" cards seemed like they could be helpful to flush out an idea, or dig down.
There are notes (similar to google keep)
Chapter planning cards (it is a novel writing application).
Grid cards (cards in a table)
As well as a timeline and challenger tool.
I am not suggesting it would replace the tools people are using. Just interesting seeing how these various card systems can be used to organize and sort thoughts.

That being said it can be exported in a number of formats ebook, rtf, markdown and html- making it possible to use it and then fold the work into another system.

The application can be downloaded here

If you have a beast of a server (in a datacenter), you could run the most recent version of NextCloud. Not only does this do file sharing like a champ, there are also chat and videochat features built-in. But having a lot of people connect to the video chat feature simultaneously, that requires "horsepower" and bandwidth.

That is a possibility.... It is possible I could turn one of these older laptops into a kiosk that really only loads a nextcloud user account- but would I be able to lock or pair down the nextcloud page enough that they did not get lost/intimidated.

132
Some followup thoughts and findings:

I found Eldy a software for TCPs that can be installed on a number of different systems, including linux.  Requires more navigating than I originally outlined, but a nice possibility as I could use some of the older systems I have access to. It looks like development might have stopped in 2012/ listed as compatible with Windows vista. Unsure how well it will run today.. if its skype/email/chat/blog systems will work even if it does. Skype has changed alot since 2012
http://www.eldy.eu/

I came across this article which supports my feelings about using linux mint.
https://takacsmark.com/the-top-5-linux-systems-for-elderly-people/

It is possible to lock down windows 10 pro so that a user only has access to one application like the web browser. I wonder if this is possible with linux mint?

133
I am trying to brainstorm options that might help an number of elderly/  severely “technology challenged people" (here after referred to as TCP :D) to view photos/video messages, video chat and maybe even receive messages in as easily way as possible.  The need has been brought to the forefront given covid19.  One family friend’s neighbor has agreed to let them use their wifi if I can provide them with a system. The issue is they cannot grasp how to use the laptop. In fact they are really intimidated by it.

They are not alone.  I have about a dozen TCPs in my immediate family/friends circle who missed the technology boat.  They do not own a pc, tablet or a smartphone and have really never used a computer.   They all have used the television (sometimes a vcr or dvd player), though more than few have had difficulty switching between video sources on their television.

The idea is to set up a system; a laptop or a tablet (with camera) that that somehow helps automate the sharing/connecting that many of us who did not miss the technology boat do with ease.  Actually it would be preferable if the system did not need to be navigated at all.

The way I imagine the system operating would be:
After turning on, the system boots into a "friends and family" slide show.
Ability to remotely feed images into a slide show using cloud service (see inspiration below).
Video calling device automatically interrupts slide show with an accept video call except call / decline call button.
Ending call goes back to slide show.
Ability to send a message (text) to system.  Closing message(s) resumes family/ friends slide show.
Ability to remote into the system to reset or “help” user use the system.

Of course there are many other functions. This helps the TCP recieve, but not necessarily initiate.  The TCP can call a friend and relative on their landline and ask them to video call them.  This would mean the TCPs would only need to know how to
a) Turn on and off device
b) accept/ decline and maybe clear video calls/messages.

I feel this could be a good way to repurposed some older laptops / tablets I have in my possession.  Maybe installing Linux mint (operating system)  + jami (video conferencing) + nextcloud desktop app (to sync a photo video folders with a cloud share for family/friends)+ screen saver program (that pulls from nextcloud desktop app sync folder which pulls from family/friends cloud share) anydesk (for remote assistance) + some sort of launcher.

Linux mint has the benefit that even non Linux friendly friends/relatives could navigate the system should they need to in order to help out while at TCP's home or when remoting in.

Much of the inspiration from this comes from a project I embarked on years ago.  I provided a family elder with an android tablet with an app called PhotoCloud Slideshow.  It is an app that allows one to turn an older andriod tablet into a digital photo frame.   It can connect with a number of cloud services, a personal server and most importantly in my case owncloud/ nextcloud.  You can select a folder, I was able to create nextcloud share that family members could upload to.  Uploads were automatically brought into the slideshow stream.  Its issue was that turning on the tablet and the app were not streamlined for someone who did not know how to navigate it.

I found this 'rotating galaxy' video,
4K Galaxy, Nebula Motion Background ,Milky Way, Free Video Background,
but it's rotating the wrong way (as countless comments point out). I searched duckduckgo on how to do it in avidemux; all I can find out is that -apparently- my later avidemux v.2.7.5 no longer has a 'reverse video' filter function/option, whereas earlier versions do.

I did a quick search and it looks like there were changes to the software that broke the reverse function, and then it stopped being developed.  I did find two options.

1st, https://www.kapwing.com/tools/reverse-video... which resulted in this link: https://www.kapwing.com/videos/5e8265db1846690014302ac3  However it was watermarked.  Apparently if you sign up for an account you can remove the watermark.  https://clideo.com/editor/reverse-video also resulted in a watermark.

I use 4K Video Downloader for YouTube. Also https://okvid.download/ which is slower but reliable to download videos exclusively from https://ok.ru/video/c1358478, but I also have Norton 360, Malwarebytes, and the paid version of CryptoPrevent, at https://www.d7xtech....revent-anti-malware/. I've tried various other video web sources but quit using just about all of them because of persistent malware pop-up warnings from both Norton 360 and MWB.

I've purchased my own copies of various classic movies in the past, but my current laptop has no disc player, and some of my fav vids I  bought did not include omitted scenes included in later remastered versions, so it is nice to find a remastered version with omitted scenes at https://ok.ru/video/c1358478. i don't recall ever getting a malware pop-up warning from ok.ru, but neither would I ever visit it or any other vid domain without the above-mentioned paid anti-V services. Most of ok.ru's videos are redubbed in Russian, which I don't speak. But careful searching has often brought up a few classics posted in the original English.

Thanks Holt. I did not end up going with the purchase.  Just do not want to risk the viruses at this point[url=https://ok.ru/video/c1358478] looks interesting. Alot of cool content.

although it is a full application, jdownloader has been fantastic downloading from youtube among other places.  http://www.jdownloader.org/changes/index

Vegas are you no longer using Allavsoft's Downloader? You gave it an endorsement in another thread.  If you moved on... why?

I saw that BitsDuJour had Allavsoft's Download and converter.  for 100% off. or if you want the lifetime version, $18.99

Does anyone have any experience with this program.  The comments on BitsDuJour have alot of praise, but there are some saying it triggers their virus scanner.

Batch downloading and converting.  It seems to "promise" support on many platforms, including facebook. I actually need to download a bunch of videos from facebook page that is being migrated.

I am looking at other programs I saw mentioned in this thread (list below).
Years ago I used video downloadhelper.. a browser extension.  I remember feeling like it was a little sketchy.

Looks like earlier in this thread folks offered up
4k Video Downloader https://www.4kdownload.com/
3D Youtube Downloader https://yd.3dyd.com/home/
Free Download Manager https://www.freedownloadmanager.org/
JDownloader 2 BETA https://jdownloader.org/changes/index
Youtube Song downloader https://www.abelssof...tube-song-downloader

and of course youtube-dl

Thanks

What is the best way to automate the collection of specific data, ie contact information, when visiting a webpage?  Years ago I used to methodically copy or enter the  person/company’s  name, address, web url telephone number and email and notes into a contact manager or address book. More recently, I have simply saved a copy of their contact page.  I can link to the saved page, tag it, and or search for it.  This works,- but it is a little chaotic.

It occurred to me that maybe it would be possible for  Clipboard Help + Spell to identify different types of text strings and sort them neatly into their categories based on the attributes of the text.  A ".com", ".org" etc would indicate that text strig is part of a web url.  An "@" sign would indicate an email address or an Instagram etc.

It would be great to be able to pull
Name,
Address,
Telephone
Mobile
Email
Facebook Page
Instagram (more and more businesses are on instagram)
Etc…
A description
page url

It seems like an easier way to identify what text is what would be using the page coding.
I have looked into some Customer Relationship Managers CRMs to see if they offer a way to pull contact information into their systems and I have not found anything yet.  I have also looked into web scraping tools, but most seem to target an entire site.  I would like to indicate a page and pull the information I want.

Any ideas?

So I stumbled upon this and it made me think of this thread (not that I succeeded at keeping up with this thread).  I did catch some posts that explored what should be contained in a zettel...  and that came to mind when looking at this site:
https://physicstravelguide.com/start
the wiki presents concepts from varying angles- intuitive, concreate, abstract, why is it interesting and so on, depending on the subject:

So I am looking to batch convert many AMR files to MP3 (while also adjusting the Sampling rate so it is at least 16) and it occurred to me I would also like to normalize the volume on these files and possibly make other tweaks.   Additionally, I have a number of movies I would like to do the same. A Finally, I sometimes like extracting the audio from videos so I can listen on the go.  Any suggestions?  I realize this post was originally about video editing, but I guess I am wondering if there is a standalone application that can help with all of these media related tasks?

I have not looked at the old thread, but I think you are looking to normalize the audio levels.
Davinci Resolve can likely do this.

Yup, except that Thunderbird is not recommendable.

Curious why? Because Mozilla is no longer actively developing it? Other faults?  What would you recommend?  It seems like any email client should be able to do this.

After all of your old emails are downloaded, you can copy or move messages and folders from one email account to the other. You can also set up Thunderbird so that it automatically copies/moves any new messages to your new email account using its filters and rules.  Thunderbird has to be running to do this.

I wanted to add. Do some testing when transferring folders/files first.  I have had some difficulty copying entire folders like Inbox and Sent.  If you have created other sub folders those can likely be copied.

Email clients are great for this.  You can use an email client like Thunderbird like a file explorer/hub of sorts for multiple email accounts.
It would look something like this:
1) Add an account in Thunderbird (or a similar email client ) for your Yahoo email. I would set it up using IMAP- however if you wanted to download all the email off of Yahoo you could use POP.
2) In the settings/preferences for that email account choose which folders you want to subscribe/synchronize locally and how often.
3) Add another account in Thunderbird (or a similar email client) for whatever your new email will be. (ie your Google account)  Again IMAP works best.
4) Once again choose the email folders you want to subscribe/ synchronize.
5) Allow Thunderbird to download all the messages. It will be helpful if you make sure Thunderbird is downloading the entire message and not just the header/subject.

After all of your old emails are downloaded, you can copy or move messages and folders from one email account to the other. You can also set up Thunderbird so that it automatically copies/moves any new messages to your new email account using its filters and rules.  Thunderbird has to be running to do this.

You can also import your contacts using Thunderbird and synchronize them with your new email. I did a quick search on how to bring this contacts into Thunderbird. Link But I'm sure there's also a way to import them directly into your nor new email account.

You can have multiple email accounts and simply move the contents of folders from your Yahoo account to your new email account.

I have not been able to follow along this thread as closely as I would like, but I am looking forward to reading it more closely later on.  Appreciate your sharing your exploration.

btw, zettlr is very slick.  I really like it.

Yeah, I like its user interface. It kinda reminds me of doogiePIM but it is opensource.  Out of curiosity, did you look at the others?

I have not gone fully down the zettkasten rabbit hole, but I do find myself circling around to it often. I have seen a number of people compare this to https://www.zettlr.com/
As I understand it it uses a graph database, where each item is a container- so rather than emulating a "card" for each thought/note/idea,  it is a container... which makes it more friendly for storing other types of media.  It is opensource with Windows, Mac and Linux versions.

Similar programs I have been intending to look at are https://mindforger.sourceforge.io/ (I believe windows and Linux- though originally just Linux) and also https://github.com/zadam/trilium which is windows.

I personally really like it when there is a way to easily link to email. I can generate an email link, but would rather it was done automatically.

Revo Uninstaller Pro and Portable are both on sale currently at BitsDuJour
Pro is 67% off= $8.25
Portable is 30% off= $20.96

Are these still a favorite here?

but then, i found this:

now this seems cool!!
this is similar to what the mac software "The Archive" which people consider a brilliant zettel software.  so i'm trying this open source windows version and it's FANTASTIC!  so i'll be trying this out for a while.  it's beautiful looking, it is true zettel and files are all text files, and it's fast, and its free and open source, so we can modify it!

would be to add a time stamped highlights/notes section for each question that is added.

I could add the ability to add notes for each question, without too much trouble.

I think adding timestamped note, would be a nice addition. It might be possible then to link to the audio memos, videos or even photo for our use case.
I understand that the suggestion of adding media creates a much harder hurdle.
