It was not only me. Fixed now in the latest beta (3.18.22.0), available at http://ditto-cp.sourceforge.net/beta/. Enjoy!

52
Oh, sorry, my bad. I meant "Global hotkeys for last ten items copied", not "individual clips hotkeys". The latter work fine, while the former don't, regardless of the key combinations. They are even correctly displayed in the Global Hot Keys window:

ditto-hotkeys.gif

Is it only me?

53
Exactly after one year a new version (3.18.20.0) is here. Just testing it under the Christmas tree. The global hotkeys for individual clips don't work at all, though.

EDIT: Even the latest beta doesn't work for any hotkey. The previous version worked fine.

54
but pdf metadata does not contain pdf text content, only author, creation date, etc, AFAIK
You're right, I was thinking more about mouser's request.

55
Peter's Flexible Renaming Kit (PFrank) has a plugin for inserting title metadata from PDF files. Haven't tried by myself, though.

N.A.N.Y. 2012 / Re: NANY 2012 Pledge & Early Beta: Ethervane Echo
« on: November 30, 2011, 07:16 AM »
Oh yes, that's what I was afraid of... What you described makes perfect sense from any point of view, except the Microsoft's. Couldn't this issue be somehow connected to Office Clipboard? Of course I have it disabled, but still... I have no add-ins installed, as far as I know.

To the recently mentioned issue with mixed-up application icons:

I disabled the automatic minimizing on focus losing. The topmost clip is displayed correctly, until I start MS Excel 2003. Then the clip's icon is immediately changed to Excel regardless of what it has been before. So far I didn't discover any similarly behaving application.

Can you reproduce that? Do you need more details? Verified on two PCs, one WinXP, the other Vista 32-bit.

tranglos:

Thanks a lot! Both my ideas came obviously from Ditto. Regarding the hotkeys, I really mean hotkeys. Ditto uses optionally ten number keys for selecting the topmost clips instead of entering the search mode, which might be also useful. But I'm quite used to copying a couple of items in succession (e.g., account number, account holder, payment symbol), and then pasting them in succession using hotkeys (in my case pressing Win-1, Win-2, Win-3, eventually with Tab key in between for moving around in the form), so I don't have to display the Ditto window at all. I admit that I seldom use more than first three, as I don't remember the older ones. So, if that helps it might be enough to have hotkeys for the first three clips only.

Besides, I noticed in the previous version that sometimes the application icons went somehow shifted. I'll be watching this and eventually report.

Thanks again and good luck!

@tranglos:

As a long-time Ditto user I was a bit hesitating, but now I definitely switched to Echo. It's just great! You managed to add many features I was always missing from Ditto, like minimal clip length, etc. (And I don't miss storing bitmaps at all.)

However, it wouldn't be me not to point out two issues I'm missing in Echo and that are convenient in Ditto:

  • Pressing the activation hotkey when Echo already has focus should (optionally) dismiss its window
  • Assignable hotkeys to first 10 clips (I know it was discussed here already), I was always using Win key and a number

Thanks a lot!

General Software Discussion / USB Disk Ejector

This freeware app was mentioned many times here, but instead of resurrecting old threads I'm starting a new one.

There's a brand new version with many improvements. I especially like the option to remove the media and quit the program immediately.

Enjoy!

61
I was hoping one of them would support Right-click on window titlebar to close. But doesnt seem to be the case.

For this feature I'm using Pitaschio, however, I redefined the right-click to minimize and middle-click to close to be consistent with other apps (Opera, Taskbar Shuffle).

It's a hoax.

63
Just tried those "20 typefaces for free". None of them supports anything else than Latin-1 character set. If this applies to the whole set, it's for many languages of no use even for free. Also, these are only TTF/PS fonts, thus lacking all those typographic features nowadays quite common on really professional typefaces in OTF (ligatures, swashes, titling alternates, etc.).

General Software Discussion / Re: Quizo QTTabbar

And another turn back:

QTTabBar is now being developed at sourceforge.net.

Where you can read:

Quizo is NOT continuing QTTabBar.

So actually Quizo is out again...

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Startup Delayer

  • Some applications sometimes didn't start at all, or after two hours
They wouldn't start either w.o Soluto
Sure they would. And did. For example Skype. I don't need it running immediately, but I need it to run after, say, ten minutes after boot. With Soluto this was unsure, unless I removed it from the delayed apps.

  • No way to search for the application in the GUI window (sorted by loading time, not alphabetically)
Not necessary. There are other programs that can do this job.
No, I mean searching up the app in Soluto GUI for further manipulation, like moving it to delayed or stopped apps. You have to carefully hover all the shrunk and unreadable items to discover what they represent.

None of these apply to SD3. For my setup (on two different machines) it was just a long-awaited godsend.
SD3 was not intended and can in no way handle programs that start up hidden, and there are a few dozen. Besides that if you look inside SUD at the list of programs that start up without delay, you can only choose between these one's to delay. You have no idea how many other programs an services that start hidden, and believe me the list is long. Soluto handles those in a way to sort them out and as it were to let one start b4 another but w.o a delay (what Startup Delayer does with the one's in the list that are not hidden).
Well, I admit this might be a problem for someone. I don't care too much, because I'm using some utilities that evidently interfere with each other if loaded concurrently or in a wrong order. None of those starts hidden. By the way, Soluto displays a bunch of processes that cannot be handled at all. SD3 just omits them, which I consider a clearer approach.

So why not to stick with Soluto if it fits your needs? It didn't for me, so explained it here. SD3 simplified my life, that's all I wanted to share.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Startup Delayer
« on: May 17, 2011, 03:53 PM »
@ JimB:

Why I got frustrated with Soluto?

  • Inconsistent startups (sometimes 2 minutes, sometimes 10 minutes)
  • Sometimes it reports that the startup process is finished, but it continues for next minutes
  • Some applications sometimes didn't start at all, or after two hours
  • No way to control the order of launched apps
  • No way to search for the application in the GUI window (sorted by loading time, not alphabetically)
  • Running all the time in background
  • From time to time it periodically uses 20-30% CPU time and needs to be killed

None of these apply to SD3. For my setup (on two different machines) it was just a long-awaited godsend.

The final version is out. So far very good experiences, the correct loading order of some apps just fixed some of my issues both on WinXP and Vista. At least I finally had a chance to get rid of Soluto — The Anti-Frustration Software, that used to frustrate me for too long time.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Live Sync Alternative?
« on: March 16, 2011, 02:26 PM »
Thanks to all for your suggestions. I studied them all, but waited almost up to the last minute before taking a decision (the Life Sync is going to disappear by the end of March). That's why I'm back here only now.

And as you might guess, the winner is... Dropbox!

Using it for a while up to the free limit, and considering purchasing the 50 GB space, despite it would take almost two months of constant upload to fill them up using my terrible ADSL...

So far it seems to be quite reliable and simply does what it's supposed to do. Even my pet peeve about Excel files time stamps is handled in a relatively bearable way (the timestamps change on the other computers and never go back). The only drawback I encountered was the LAN sync, which first uploads the files to the server and only then performs the LAN sync. (Yes, I should have read the posts here more thoroughly.) So the initial sync took 15 hours instead of couple of minutes on direct LAN. In a real life it won't be that dramatic, I suppose.

Anyway, if there's a new competitor, please post it here.

Thanks again!

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: Park Cursor Aside
« on: January 11, 2011, 11:00 AM »
I like the idea, because as mentioned above, the "Hide pointer while typing" option usually doesn't work. However, I even didn't try this app, as I'm completely addicted to the X-mouse behavior so I can imagine what would happen on all my machines—losing focus instantly.

Would it be possible to move the cursor relatively to the application's window, for example to its title bar?

70
As I already mentioned, I had the same problem with Acer Aspire One. I tried all the tips you mentioned, but frankly, even all those applied together brought a hardly noticeable improvement. I'm sure all of them add something, and it's definitely measurable, but you almost won't notice it in a real service. The problem is in a terribly slow SSD cumulated write operations, so even if you minimize the number of disk writes, it's still terribly slow. As I wrote, the only thing that helped and speeded up the machine literally dozens of times, was the fantastic and freeware FlashFire driver that turned the machine from a useless toy to a quite useful PC. My wife is still using it everyday to her complete satisfaction. The only quite bearable drawback is you have to temporarily turn it off should you need to run chkdsk during a boot time.

General Software Discussion / Re: Alternatives to Ditto
« on: December 28, 2010, 11:28 AM »
After a period of some doubts I can now fully second Contro. For me as well there's no alternative. Why? Because I just installed the brand new version of Ditto, and it seems to finally get rid of old problems with losing focus, or not pasting properly. Give it a try!

@ wraith808: Yes, I've read your reviews, thanks! So I understand you don't recommend SugarSync. On the other hand, there are reviews on SugarSync resulting in something like: "I'd never ever get back to DropBox!"

You could also get away with #4 if the machines were on the same network with Dropbox, as it can sync across the network.  It also syncs to the cloud, but you don't have to use the bandwidth twice that way.

That's really something! Is it really so? I was not able to find this on theirs pages. For me this would change the situation dramatically, as my computers are 95% of time on the same LAN, so there's no need to sync them both via the same slow ADSL. But when they are apart it would be nice to have the sync running automatically via the internet, as the Live Sync still does—for the time being.

@ 40hz: The IDriveSync was a new item to my collection of links to sync services. Looks promising, however, with regard to the above mentioned function of DropBox it's not the winner. Besides, if I got it right, all the files to be synced are copied locally to IDriveSync Explorer folder, which seems to me a wasting of time and disk space.

But isn't this approach similar to DropBox folder? Or can I sync just any physical folder without duplicating its data to some "magical" place? It seems that only SugarSync can. Am I right?

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Live Sync Alternative?
« on: November 29, 2010, 04:38 AM »
Thanks to all responses (and sorry for my impatience). It seems that it would be easier if I back off from #4, i.e., if I reconcile with the cloud storage. Let's see how it would be in a real operation. At the moment I'm tempted to use either DropBox or SugarSync (the latter now with 5 GB storage for free). Don't you know how these two handle conflicting changes?

@ Bamse: I've never heard of Gbridge, thanks. It seems to be a bit overkill for my needs, though. Besides, it does not perform a real bidirectional sync, but uses two one-way sync jobs instead. Because of that I suspect it of not handling the conflicts properly.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Live Sync Alternative?

Thanks, but I can't. According to the page you mentioned:
To begin syncing folders here, start Windows Live Mesh, or install it if you haven't already.
So, I'm back again at the XP limitation...

Besides, 5 GB is okay, but it would take ages on my connection to use it. That's why I wanted to have internet just for connecting to the sync database, not the data in majority of cases, only when I'm off the house LAN, but the main "big" sync is done locally. This seems to be an absolutely unique feature of Live Sync.
