Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR and X1 (or other desk. Search tools)
« on: January 04, 2007, 05:50 PM »
I think the google link in Armando screenshots refers to "Théâtre Mouffetard", a theater (not for movies, for plays) which is located "rue Mouffetard", that is Mouffetard street, in Paris.

As to "Mouffetard" would be related to "moufter", which is always used in a negative way ("il n'a pas *moufté* quand John a tout déballé" / "he kept his mouth shut when John spilled the beans"), I couldn't say !

BTW, I ditched Copernic a year ago : too many bugs, version after version.  Main gripe : the indexing engine was very sensitive and always left a lot of messages unindexed.  Indexing was also quite long and less compact.  I have on my business PC over 3 GB of outlook pst, most messages having attachements, Copernic index was very very huge, and the non indexed messages were a major reason for switching.

What's a mouffetard? :tellme: Sounds funny!  :P

Thanks.  Very well done and moving.

I'd like to add RtM has a very nice and efficient mobile interface (something like mobile.rememberthemilk.com).  I find this web site/service invaluable to keep track of small tasks and checklists.

I like the way you can "twist" it to better suit your need.  For instance, I name every added task as follows :
"061228-check donationcoder for answer to my post" for a task entered today.

Then I don't have to play with priorities/due dates to have task sorted out chronologically.

This is particularly useful when I order something from the WEB.  I add a new task on my "e-Commerce" list, which looks like : "061226-Amazon.com ; latest CD from Suzanne Vega".  When I receive the CD, I mark the task done.  I sometimes use the Note feature to keep a log of events regarding this order, such as "order is shipped on ...".

General Software Discussion / Re: O&O Defragmenter 8.5
« on: December 18, 2006, 04:05 PM »
Thanks for your view on this.

I just found out a nice feature in the O&O demo software, the integrated 3D screensaver that activates a custom defrag (any drive, any mode) and displays this on a 3D rotating view of the layout !

There is only one feature I miss from PerfectDisk, well..., actually two :
- the ability to offline defrag most drives without rebooting, except if there are some locks that cannot be released during the defrag process
- the way directories are sorted out in PD "smart placement", which is almost equivalent to O&O "Modified" Option, except dir. are not sorted with O&O.

General Software Discussion / O&O Defragmenter 8.5
« on: December 18, 2006, 11:16 AM »
Hi All,

I just noticed that O&O has just released a new version of its defragmenter, v8.5.   I used to rely on PerfectDisk, but since version 6, I see no real improvements in every new version, just cosmetic changes.

Are there any opinions on this new O&O release ?  And yes, I do use also Power Defragmenter GUI + Sysinternals' contig.exe

Thanks.

I just did.  Thanks for the link.  Except if I have missed something, it's a word by word reader.  I usually try to read by group of words, so it's actually more disturbing than a regular reader.

Also, one as to input the text to the web site, which is not very good for privacy.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

Living Room / Re: Very odd graphics problem - anyone any ideas ?
« on: December 15, 2006, 04:56 PM »
Do you get the same behaviour when you boot from a linux live CD, such as Mandriva CD
ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.mandriva.com/MandrivaLinux/official/iso/2007.0/One/mandriva-one-2007-free-kde.iso ?

If yes, that means it's a BIOS or harware problem. If no, it's probably a Windows driver problem.  Just my 2 cents...

Actually not.

I do have tried the one from Intellimouse from Microsoft, it's just the "regular" windows scroll, probably not double-buffered, hence not that smooth.

887
Hi again,

I would say HTML and plain text would be fine.  Pdf would be nice also, can do without.

Thanks.

888
Good question about the format.  I have to think about it a little bit, find some typical use cases.  I'll post here ASAP.   Of course I would say right now HTML (including plain text) and if possible pdf, but I don't want to miss something...

889
Exactly.  The problem with every method I know is that I still find the scrolling not smooth enough to allow for a comfortable reading.  I have come to the conclusion it might be caused by Windows display management itself, and maybe also to the "remanence" of current LCD, which gives the current scrolling a slightly hazy/fuzzy look .  But I am no programmer and no Windows expert, so it's just a (wild) guess.

So let me get this straight, you are looking for a text reader that scrolls down smoothly at a given pace so you can sit back and read an entire document without doing anything?

890
Thanks for the answer.  Actually it's not smooth enough compared to what View80 could do, also, setting a precise speed is not that easy with Acrobat and Opera (I use both).

.jf.

I don't exactly know what you mean, but i think opera's and adobe acrobat's scrolling is pretty smooth... (probably it isn't synced with refresh rate though, i have no idea).

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: The Holy Grail of text reading on a PC
« on: December 05, 2006, 05:08 AM »
Hi all,

Some of you may remember the excellent but short-lived Amiga computer.  It had a unique feature, the ability to synchronize display with the screen refresh on CRT.  This made it possible to have scrolling text reader such as View80, which was very convenient to read long text (books, ...), on screen, thanks to the ultra smooth scrolling with variable speed.

I have not been able to find such a smooth scrolling text reader on PC/Windows, even if todays machines are much more powerful.  Do you know a software doing the same thing (I guess LCD don't work as CRT, but I hope it's still possible) ?

Thanks.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Keep a given windows to front
« on: December 05, 2006, 03:14 AM »
Thanks again.  I think I'll go with Turbotop, which fits exactly my need.  I did try others, including GridMove, which is very powerful but requires a little bit of config when wanting just to keep one window allways on top.

Once more, DonationCoder really makes the difference !

Kind regards,

Post New Requests Here / DONE: Keep a given windows to front
« on: December 04, 2006, 08:54 AM »
Hi,

I was wondering whether there already exists a utility that can make it so that a given windows can be kept on front as long as necessary, even if other windows below are selected.

Thanks.

TapTap / Re: Tips and Tricks

I just found out about TapTap.  Great utility !  My favourites are :
keymap DLC : pause (I am a F&RR fan)
keymap DLS : W+D (iconify all windows, I like a clean desktop !).

Living Room / Re: Agnitum Outpost 4 .... dumped
« on: November 20, 2006, 02:38 PM »
I recently dumped my FWall for Sygate personal firewall and had no problem so far.  I even got the link from somewhere in this forum : http://www.tucows.com/preview/213160.

And for antivirus, I can recommend a 12-month free solution (it just costs an e-mail address or so) : http://home3.ca.com/microsoft/

No slowdown from either the fwall or the AV.

Hi,

Thanks for the info.  I did have a quick look at it.  There are some limitations in this free version, some quite annoying like the lack of directory synchro.  I installed it on several PC.  On two of them I had a serious error at first launch, saying some dll was missing, and also a memory protection error on one of them.  On second run it finally launched OK.

Anyway, as I said, for a free product, it's still interesting looking at it.

898
Half-Life 2 : superb realization, difficulty well managed

Quake III : very intense, less time spent on it !

I have a problem close to the one with autoplay, also regarding removable drives : I don't want to activate system restore on a set of removables USB drives that always have letter P: and Q: when mounted on my XP Home.  But quite regularly I have to deactivate system restore on them, as if the settings were gone.  The same setting remains stable for non removable drives.

Is there a way, once and for all, to disable system restore for these removable drives.  I don't think TweakUI allows this (it didn't on my old Win98SE system, and caused quite a few other problems...)

Thanks.

Hi,

I would like to add that Opera 9 incorporate a pretty decent downloader.  No need to have a special tools for this.  It evens accept bittorrent download !
