Hi all,

I am looking for a science-fiction short story, I just remember the synopsis, partly. It's a time travel story, where the main character, a boy at the beginning of the story and an adult at the end keeps returning to a strange garden which is used to launch rockets ? Or something else scientific related.  And for some reasons, I can't remember, this garden is flowing with tubes that create some time shifts, essential to the scientific activity.  It's strictliy forbidden to come across them but for some reason some day he will, and since that day he will meet a stranger that tries to communicate with him but somehow eludes him. And, big spoiler coming, it happens that this stranger is himself at a different times.

I read it as a part of a compilation of short stories, but I really cannot find neither the title nor the author.

Any hint much welcome, as always.

Thanks !

Living Room / Looking for a seventies music title...
« on: November 11, 2013, 05:48 AM »
Hi all,

I have been struck by a violent nostalgia access and I am currently looking for an old song.  It was sung, in the seventies, as far as I remember, by a young girl, possibly British, and she sang in some kind of a non-existing language.  Possibly using also words like pop, whizz, and so forth.

I'd be most grateful if someone could identify this very unique song.

Thanks in advance,

It's on http://dottech.org/1...kup-workstation-5-8/

I used to rely on the snapshot feature on my Vista Machine, up to version 2 that was fine.  I cannot vouch for this version though, but this is the version with this feature (it's a Rollback kind of feature).

General Software Discussion / Software to suspend HDD ?
« on: October 01, 2012, 06:33 AM »
Hi,
I have the following issue that I'd like to solve : quite often, at work, I have to remove my notebook from the dock and go somewhere else, for example to attend a meeting.  I usually put my PC to sleep before removing it from the dock, so that I don't have to move it when the HDD is still working.  But putting the PC to sleep takes quite some time, and also awaking it at destination.

Is there a simple utility that could park the HDD for a few minutes, without make the PC sleep ?  I suppose not, but one never knows...

Thanks.

PS : this PC is running XP Pro.

fSekrit / fSekrit not working on an old XP PC
« on: October 01, 2012, 03:47 AM »
Hi,

A friend of mine says fSekrit.exe v1.40 won't launch on his XP PC.  I'll try to get a capture of the error message and will report here, but is there any known issue on some old XP PC ? I personally never encountered such a behavior.

Thanks.

Hi,

I am looking for a virtual printer software such as doPDF, cutePDf, etc. except that the result of the output from this virtual printer would be a pdf identical to one generated by a scanned copy of the original document (no text inside, just a picture per page).
Do you know any software that does it, in one pass only ?

Thanks.

Hi,

I remember having tried 1 year ago or so an advanced task killer for Windows, that offered 5 or 6 different modes to kill a task, from the nicest way to the harshest.  Can't find its name and there are so many of these utilities I cannot find it on Google.  It was a freeware AFAIR.

Any suggestion ?

Thanks !

Hi,
I am having this issue with a recent Win7x64 machine : I have created on the Desktop a folder that contains shortcuts of installed applications, instead of having them all around the desktop.  When I installed CCleaner for the first time, I moved its launch icon to this folder by drag and drop.

When I install a new version, the launch icon being re-created. The actual issue occurs when I move this recreated icon into the folder : Windows warns me that CCleaner.lnk already exists there and asks me if I want to overwrite it, keep the old version or keep both. *BUT* the ccleaner icon is missing from this popup warning window.  And this occurs also for all  other links in a similar situation, when the link already exists in the folder, it's not CCleaner specific.

I have tried many times to re-generate the icon user database, to no avail.  Here it is how it works on a normal system :

IconOK.jpg

Here the CCleaner icons are perfectly displayed (XP here).  Not on my Win7 system.  I tried to look on Microsoft online help, but with little results.

Thanks for any hint on how to solve this !

General Software Discussion / Nasty NTFS issue ? [Solved !]
« on: January 13, 2012, 10:04 AM »
Hi,

I am having a nasty issue on my OS drive (C:, XP Pro).  I realized a month ago that even if chkdsk (in read mode) is not finding any serious issue, at boot time, it renders my XP unstable.  The issue seems present for quite some time, because it is present "within" all recent image backups I made with different tools (AIP Free, drive snapshot, R-Drive, etc.). And older backups cannot be restored because some important changes have been made since them I cannot lose.

I have tried the following (among many other experiments) : clone my OS partition to an external drive using a regular cloning tool (HDCLone), perform a chkdsk /f on the destination, then clone back the partition.  At first boot all was fine, then I asked for a chkdsk at boot time, and my OS was "cooked" again.  The drive is surface error-free AFAIK (HDCLone would probably have reported any wrong sector).

Currently, all is working fine, unless a chkdsk is launched at boot time.

Any hint on how to solve this.  I am considering cloning in file mode, if I can manage that, because I suspect the NTFS metadata are somehow damaged.

Any help appreciated !  Thanks.

General Software Discussion / Strange proposal from Macecraft
« on: December 15, 2011, 03:31 AM »
Hi,

I received yesterday the following mail from Macecraft.  The trouble I have with it is that the "organization" they are referring to seems rather a political party than a regular non profit organization.

What do you think ?

Excerpts of the mail below :

We are doing a very special Xmas promotion: Donate money (for example $10)
to a Finnish non-profit organization and you'll receive a fully working
license for jv16 PowerTools 2011, and the same license will also work with
the upcoming 2012 version.

The organization is called Edistyspuolue. It's a non-profit organization
which promotes and defends civil liberties in Finland.

You are entitled to participate because you have downloaded a free trial
version of our product and gave your email address.

You can donate either with PayPal or by wire transfer
1) To donate with PayPal, please send the donation to

your license to be generated with and sent to. A license will be sent to

Thank you!

General Software Discussion / Special File Recovery Software
« on: November 21, 2011, 08:47 AM »
Hi,

Once again I lost a big file, a DVB-T recording of around 8GB, because I deleted it and emptied the trashcan.  When I realized my mistake, I tried immediately many recovery software, such as Recuva, but also the excellent Active@FileRecovery Pro and also FileScavenger, they all see the deleted file, but with a size of ... 0. Smaller deleted files (1-2 GB) show their original size before deletion.

It already happened to me once, that is I deleted a big file and no recovery tool seems able to recover it, because the seen size equals zero.  With smaller files, it works almost everytime (provided I act immediately).

Does anyone knows a file recovery software that also recovers "big" files, that was confronted to this issue, and found a solution ?

Thanks.

General Software Discussion / Dock on recent Sony Vaio
« on: August 15, 2011, 07:20 AM »
Hi,

I have seen recently a nice laptop Pc by Sony in a retail shop, the Vaio VPC CA1S1E.  This model, with all other Sony Vaio models displayed, had a very nice dock installed, a bit similar to Apple's, but shown on the top of the screen.

The icon of the app under the mouse pointer would get maximized to improve selection of the app to be launched.

Does anyone with a recent Vaio knows which dock software is being used ?

Thanks.

Hi all,

I have a very strange issue with my netbook. I currently use a free wifi hotspot to connect to the Internet, and it went well until I tried to connect to www.tomtom.com. The website won't open. When I use another PC connected to the same hotspot, it just opens fine and quickly. When I retry several times on the netbook, it sometimes load the home page after 30 trials or so.

I have tried every single browser on the netbook: Opera, Chrome, K-Meleon, IE, and they all refuse to load properly www.tomtom.com.

Chrome does specify some error message :
Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data.

Any hint on where I should look to solve this ?

BTW, I have reinstalled Java & Flash, just in case... No effect.

Thanks for any help !
