For the last couple of years I have been using Google Translate via my right-click context menu in Firefox (mark a word > right-click > Search marked word in Google Translate > word translated into Danish) almost every day. It used to be so well working that I didn't bother to install any of my copies of WebWord or Babylon. Google Translate was fast & easy to use.

But that has changed!  :(

403. That’s an error.

Your client does not have permission to get URL / from this server. (Client IP address: 2.1(xx.xxx.xx)6
)

GoogleERROR-2016-09-17.gif

That’s all we know.
-Google Translate

of course that's not "all we know"! But for the last couple of weeks it sure is all they have told me.

I don't understand it. I am not aware that anything relevant has changed in my Firefox 47. However, they list my proper IP address (without xes), so maybe it has to do with me as a person? I never log in to my Google account. Is that it? have Google upgraded the hard-playing ball?

If I arrive Google Translate any "normal" way, there is no problem.

Any idea?  :tellme:

For safety's sake I thought I would update my Firefox 47.0.1 to Firefox 48.0. So I did.

After 2x restart I was surprised to realize that a number of favourite addons clearly had stopped working, so I went to see what's wrong with my Nightly Tester Tool who's job it is to "Force Addon Compatibility". Turns out it has been overruled by Firefox, so no compatibility was forced on anything.

At Mozilla's page I was told a story about the "many" addons that are trying to steel my money, identity, etc. Of course such a story is difficult to believe, since I never have met such an addon. New homepage redirection, yes, but never anything dangerous. Maybe we just don't hear about them? But of course, I guess they're out there, just waiting for a chance to enter my PC, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

And because of this I should be thankful for Mozilla now blocking every unsigned addons, I assume...

I do, however, not agree with Mozilla on this. Do you? The unsigned addons that I have are not new in any way. They have been on my computer for many years!! On my PC there is nothing to fear (of course there is, but so far it all went well) - and I totally want to have my addons back. They were there for a reason; without them, Firefox is no longer the best.  In fact, without addons Firefox is nothing but the fattest kid in the world.

So I removed 48 and reinstalled 47.

Do they know what they're doing?!
Have you abandoned Firefox? If not: Do you use a newer version than 47.0.1?

General Software Discussion / TeraCopy 3 updated August 11, 2016
« on: August 13, 2016, 07:42 AM »
Teracopy is a copy handler for Windows PC only.
Teracopy is free, Teracopy Pro is $20. A Pro license is a Lifetime license.
Version 2 is still the official version - the update was for version 3 Beta
From time to time Teracopy Pro can be found discounted on Bits du Jour

TeraCopy 3 beta 2
August 11, 2016 by Oleg

http://codesector.com/teracopy
http://blog.codesect...m/category/teracopy/

teracopy_compact.png

Changelog:

Faster Logical to physical disk mapping.
    Mapped network drives detection.
    Notifications fix.
    Delete R/O files on replace.
Add entire drive to file list.
Quote comma in csv reports, export folders.
File date discrepancy increased to 2 sec.
    Better completed state icon.
    Smoother scrolling with touchpad.
    Other bugfixes.

TeraCopy is designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed. It skips bad files during the copying process, and then displays them at the end of the transfer so that you can see which ones need attention. TeraCopy can automatically check the copied files for errors by calculating their CRC checksum values. It also provides a lot more information about the files being copied than its Windows counterpart. TeraCopy integrates with Windows Explorer's right-click menu and can be set as the default copy handler
-Teracopy
You may use the license for Pro in one of two ways: one user on multiple computers (example: a desktop computer and a personal laptop which are both used exclusively by you) multiple users on a single computer (example: a home computer which is shared by all family members)

Living Room / a fine but time-stealing offer from BdJ
« on: July 06, 2016, 04:25 AM »
Deal of the Week: The Ultimate PC Bundle to Strengthen & Protect Your PC< is actually a really fine offer - which is why I sadly know the next: the time it will take to go through the various register for account / get key / register for app -procedures are so enormous you will get frustrated / annoyed and feel you are wasting your time! I kid you not, it took me a full hour to do all this - and I have still not had time to install any of it!!

I think  CCleaner Pro, Scrivener, Delta Walker, PhraseExpander and Focusky Pro all are making this a really fine offer, together they are fully worth the asking price ($40) - and then some! - and there are 5 more programs!

Be aware that Focusky Pro will downgrade in a year. Normal price per year is $99.

https://bitsdujour.stacksocial.com/sales/pc-bundle-2016 $40 = a fine, bit time-stealing offer.

One of my latest addons has had the unfortunate side-effect that Firefox 46 not has stopped closing, when I first close Firefox and then shut down Windows. So at next launch Firefox will ALWAYS start with saying "This is embarrassing..." and offer me to close this or that page from the last session, before launching. But I say, it is not just "embarrassing", it's ANNOYING!! Firefox never crashes on me, so why should it restore? No, kill that restore!!

Of course the right answer is not to find whatever addon screwed with my Firefox... So I have looked "everywhere", searching for a default setting called something like "Never restore, just open a new session". I know it used to be there - somewhere - but now that I need it, I can't find it. Has it gone? No, of course not! But where is it? How do I tell Firefox, to never (try to) restore?

Living Room / DonationComics... (digitalcomicmuseum)
« on: May 09, 2016, 01:18 AM »
I quote from digitalcomicmuseum because I think it's worth saving:

>>Hi Gang,
For this month of May 2016 every user who donates will be given FTP access as an alternate method to download files from the 19,000+ Digital Comic Museum collection.
For each dollar donated, donors will receive 5 gigs of file downloads over the next 31 days from the day the donation was made.

Click on the Donate link >here<  to contribute to the cause and receive your FTP login info in an email. Remember to log in (here at DCM) before you donate! Please be sure your DCM profile email address is working first if you aren't using an active address.

For the last two years our FTP Access Month has been remarkably popular.  Donors to the site are vital for keeping our server bill covered.  These FTP Months help DCM build a reserve fund for those months we come up short in our monthly goal of $288 or if there is an emergency such as a hard drive that needs replacing in our servers like last April 8th.

DCM is a built on four pillars.  The physical comics and those that buy and share them, the scanners/editors of those comics working many hours to share their scans, the staff working hard behind the scenes and the financial donors who give their money to keep our servers running.  Those financial donors don't get nearly the recognition that the other groups do but are easily as vital to keeping DCM a healthy site!  As a thank-you to donors this month we are offering our third FTP Access month!

A simple list of all comics on the FTP and their locations:
http://ftp.digitalco...um.com/comiclist.txt

Plus a placeholder page that sums everything up.
http://ftp.digitalcomicmuseum.com/

++++++++++++

forum_header.gif

++++++++++++

Here are the specifics -
For every donation you will be given access to the FTP from the donation date. Due to costs, bandwidth etc download limits will be put in place.
For every $1 donated during May you will be given a download limit of 5 GB for the following 31 days.

So lets get on to some examples....<<

Read http://digitalcomicm...hp/topic,6780.0.html

You will need a registered username, to get the FTP download link. Tip: Log in before donating!
My comment:
You do not need to download anything, but please go and donate, in order to save this fine museum!

C:\Windows\System32\CompatTelRunner.exe  :(

Big Win 10 update yesterday, ("update", not "upgrade", I was already running Win 10), but now the terrible CompatTelRunner is starting with Windows, and it is using far too much CPU, from 0% up to 80%, and ever so slowing the use of Windows. After it has done its job, it will close until next Windows launch.

"ThomasJohnson-977" phrased my problem quite well:

>>Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?<<

ThomasJohnson-977: >>I have upgraded to Windows 10 Home from Windows, and my disk is maxed out for 20 minutes on startup every time I start it. So I decided to dig in and found dozens of svchost.exe running, which slowly disappear and dozens of CompatTelRunner.exe start to run. All of them are open to random files throughout my pc. I almost can't even use my pc while this happening because to start something requires disk I/O and there is no bandwidth. Memory isn't full and CPU is 4% or less but I still can't do much during those 20 minutes. Resource Monitor shows the tasks are running in the background, but they are preventing me from doing anything in the "foreground". ANNOYING! When it's done' everything is working just fine.

When I did the upgrade, I said to NOT share anything with MS, except errors. So I don't know what it is doing. I thought at first maybe it's some sort of AV, but the name of this exe just doesn't jive with that. If this is about Windows 7 Compatibility, why is it still running after upgrading, and why on every boot up?<<

"compatibility update for win 7 RTM"? Hmm... maybe, maybe not.  :-\

I don't use "Metro" and I don't have any "apps" running, (only real programs...), so I have no use for this new old thing.

Any one else having problems with CompatTelRunner the first few minutes after Windows has started?
Tips on how to get rid of it?

4) WebSpeakster Multi-Media Publisher http://www.webspeakster.com/video.html
video.png

Create it - Publish it - Share it
We offer PC to Web Messaging Software Solutions: all are free of cost, adware, spyware or other intrusive code.

Clarification - cuz, the word "Free" is not always what it seems now-a-days. When we say "Free" that does NOT mean that we implement tactics to make "you the product" like most "free" services of this type (i.e Facebook, etc...) do! In other words - we do not use (or claim ownership) of your data in any way. Check out the comparison in next quote
Comparison: the Pros & Cons of using WebSpeakster apps http://www.webspeakster.com/compare.html

With all the 'social media' type services out there, now-a-days, I know that it is hard to get away from some of your favorites and even consider using any of the 'WebSpeakster' apps.  BUT - please take a minute to get educated on the reason(s) why you might just want to (or not).

The CONS of using WebSpeakster:

  •     The software requires to be installed and ran on a Windows PC. Can not be ran off a cell phone or MAC system.
  •     The free version allows only one publication per day - *deletes off the server after 10 days.
  •     The 'results web page' (your message web page published on the 'cloud') is not customizable when using the free version.
  •     At this time - we are not offering the publishing of videos. This may change if we could only figure out how we could even hope to *compete with 'YouTube':-)
  •     Your published content (web page) is not public unless your viewer has the/ your specific URL.

The PROS of using WebSpeakster:

  •     We claim no ownership of your published data. Maybe you never read the long EULA when signing up to most of the other 'social media' type services - but once you post any data on their server - it is THEIR property to use in any way they want!
  •     We do not treat you as the 'product'. By using our software/ service it does not subject you to intrusion of your viewers, data, or streamed paid **advertising to you or your viewers.
  •     Your published content (web page) is not public unless your viewer has the/ your specific URL: depending on what you are using your published web content for - this may be a benefit instead of a 'con' since only folks that you give the URL to will most likely ever review your published content.
  •     Most all aspects of the software can be easily customized (to your liking). This eliminates most all of the 'CONS' listed above. Joining 'The Code-it Membership' gives you benefits like non other in this world!
  •     If you are a biz (or will be using for a newsletter or publishing promotional content) it would be possible to easily include a means to display a advertising banner to your 'results page' that is published. "Talk to me" about this possible feature.

* we are a small company - the cost of 'cloud' storage, of your files, and required support is more than you might think.

** the free version does have a couple of links to our web site (on your results page that is published).

I'd appreciate any questions or comments related to this software: mb(at)code-it.com
UNAUTHORIZED REPRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF THIS (C) INFORMATION WOULD BE DEEPLY APPRECIATED!

What is Runtime Broker, and Why is it working so pathetically bad?
It's using half the CPU, when I have played maybe a dozen audio files online!

 >:(

I have not yet checked if the problem is global, or if it only is when I use my local ISP, (musik.yousee.dk).

I can play the first 10 numbers, with no problems of any kind. Suddenly the sound will start stumbling and the computer will use 100% CPU. When I fight my way to have a look in task manager, Runtime Broker is using at least 48% CPU - and Firefox another 40% and some container 10% Anything left?

Unfortunately you cannot play the full numbers, (http://musik.yousee....mp;albumId=115607586) so there is no easy way to replicate the problem.

Or am I the only one having major problems with (Firefox and) Runtime Broker?  :-\

SORRY!! I should of course have told that I am using Streaming Audio Recorder, to record the audio in question.

Also, I am on a 32-bits Windows_10_Pro 4GB_RAM Dell laptop.

Living Room / A long time ago in a galaxy far far away
« on: December 02, 2015, 09:50 AM »
Modified because of wrong link:
I have not tried this, and I probably won't, because I don't know how to stop it again! Google has created an easter egg for Starwar lovers: Type A long time ago in a galaxy far far away in >the search box<, and watch the magic come alive! It is of course all about the Star Wars The Force Awakens opening December 17 in a theater near you. Or is that maybe only in Denmark? Did you already have the premiere? I have no idea, because I haven't seen any of them, and I will most likely not watch this one either. But this easter egg sounds fun.

Go to Google.com/starwars (sorry, dot now removed), and log in.

Are you into Star Wars?  :tellme:

Two days ago an extension wanted to install itself on my computer: "adblock shield light 1.3.9" for Firefox. I have Adblock but this was adblock, (not a big 'A'), so I hesitated and went searching for clues on the Internet as to what it was. I've found nothing, but I got curious, so I made a backup and installed it anyway. To my surprise there are no informations about it in Addons; Firefox 42 > Tools > Addons > "More", leads to nothing but the name! I don't understand how it can be version 1.3.9 and be unknown. However, I am not scared (at least not yet), because I have not seen any difference in my computer (32-bits laptop Win 10 Pro)'s performance, and "no malware was found".

But the situation itself keeps nagging me: Where the heck does this little addon come from? Adblock doesn't mention such a thing, and the Internet in general claims it to be unknown! Maybe it has nothing to do with Adblock, and maybe it has. I don't know. Do you? Am I infected? No, of course not.

adblock shield light, anyone?  :tellme:

My query did not give the wanted result at first, so I've renamed ("Get paid") the thread.
However, it seems my search all along was based on false memory.
---------------------------------- original post:

In the early 1980s I had an already very old record with the wonderful number Cool Water (written by Bob Noland in 1936). I praised it too much, so I lost it..., and now I really miss it, because in my mind this particular version was better than any other of the many versions there are.

The version I am seeking is "basically" a (black, vocal) version of these:

Sons Of The Pioneers: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=WDtCa8ZgAk4
Hank Williams: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=s5ywIVBBt-Y
Burl Ives: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=qtxqFZbyzS0
Frankie Laine: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=2jj7qab6KC4
The Rooftop Singers: https://www.youtube..../watch?v=yJ_HefidQpk
Melody Master's Quartet: not available

However:
> It was not performed by white men, but definitely by 3 or 4 "old" Afro American male singers only. In my memory it was a quartet, but it might 'merely' have been a trio.

> and I feel certain it was a cappella / Barbershop style, because I cannot remember any instrumental sounds
Eh... regarding "Barbershop": not the notice me, I am impressive -style, but four old negro church singers discretely giving their best -style.

> I also imagine it was running 16 rpm or 78 rpm. I think it was too old for 45 or 33 rpm (I think it was a single)!?

I will of course be pleased if it turns out to be on the Internet, even YouTube, but I have searched so often, that if it's there, it's most likely misnamed.

If you know about this record, I am of course ready to pay to have it mailed to me, please, or to have a digital copy, if possible.

Sons Of The Pioneers - Cool Water Lyrics

All day I face the barren waste without the taste of water,
Cool water.
Old Dan and I with throats burned dry and souls that cry for water,
Cool water.

The night are cool and I'm a fool each stars a pool of water,
Cool water.
But with the dawn I'll wake and yawn and carry on to water,
Cool water.

(Chorus)
Keep a movin' Dan, don't you listen to him Dan, he's a devil not a man
and he spreads the burnin' sand with water.
Dan can't you see that big green tree where the waters runnin' free
and it's waiting there for me and you.
Water, cool water.

The shadows sway and seem to say tonight we pray for water,
Cool water.
And way up there He'll hear our prayer and show us where there's water,
Cool Water.

Dan's feet are sore he's yearning for just one thing more than water,
Cool water.
Like me, I guess, he'd like to rest where there's no quest for water,
Cool water.

For your info: "Old Dan" is a donkey.

General Software Discussion / Friendly Face of Death (Windows 10)!
« on: August 27, 2015, 03:25 AM »
My upgrade to Windows 10 was a good one, so I was surprised when I read how Lincoln Spector from Windows Secrets had some terrible experiences when upgrading to Win 10.

I merely bring you a short snippet, read the full story at http://windowssecrets.com/top-story/thirty-day-win10-experiment-lasts-only-a-week/

(...)
Reviewing the issues, starting with the crashes

The worst problem hit on day two. When I tried to lower the volume on my music, suddenly Win10 wouldn’t respond. Then the mouse pointer started behaving erratically. Within a minute, the music stopped entirely, the external monitor went black, and then the laplet’s monitor turned blue.

I was suffering my first experience of the Win10 version of a Blue Screen of Death (but not the last). Surprisingly, it’s a big improvement over the vintage BSoD. Instead of the usual technical mumbo-jumbo, you see a big, sad-face emoticon (which I dubbed the Friendly Face of Death — FFoD) and clear, concise text that tells you what to search for online.

Win10 FFoD
W20150820-TS-FFoD.png

Figure 1. Win10's Blue Screen of Death provides a friendlier face and a bit less-obscure information than do previous Windows versions.

Still, that was not much consolation. The first crash occurred on day two, in the middle of work. Two days later, it happened again. On day six, Win10 crashed twice! Each crash was preceded by erratic Windows behavior and no response from the keyboard and mouse. Two more crashes the next day effectively ended the 30-day experiment.

Anyway, it's good that the new error message actually gives you an useful information rather than the former useless search without knowing what you are searching for

Non-Windows Software / How to install Windows 10 on a Mac
« on: August 13, 2015, 02:53 AM »
>"How to install Windows 10 on a Mac"<
http://www.cnet.com/...windows-10-on-a-mac/

I have never even touched a Mac, so I have no idea if this tip is good or bad:

How to install Windows 10 on a Mac

Why yes, you can install Windows 10 on your Mac. The process can be a little technical, but we'll have your back the whole way through, including how to remove Windows afterward in case you change your mind.

Editors' note: This post was updated on August 12, 2015, with information on how to remove Windows from a dual-boot Mac.

If you haven't already heard, Windows 10 is pretty great and worth installing on your PC. Apple fans won't miss out either, since the new operating system can be installed on your Mac as well.

To install Windows 10 on a Mac, you will need the following:

The Mac you plan to install Windows 10 on
A thumb drive with at least 5GB of storage space (for reference, I named mine "WININSTALL")
A second computer that already runs Windows
    A fast Internet connection
-c|net
There is a fine video on their homepage: 2015-08-13_094746.gif

Note that you won't need a Windows 10 license for the installation, but you will need to buy one if you want to continue to use it on your Mac after the 30-day trial period.

Following these instructions will install Windows 10 on your Mac in a dual-boot configuration, meaning you'll have the option to choose which operating system (Windows 10 or Mac OS) to use each time you turn on the computer. And, if you later on change your mind, the guide also includes the information on how you can remove Windows afterwords.

This guide is for a Mac that doesn't have already have Windows installed. If yours already has Windows 7 or Windows 8 on your Mac, you can upgrade it to Windows 10 the normal way.

Part 1: Getting the Windows 10 file on your Mac

Step 1: Insert the flash drive into your Windows computer and download Windows 10's media creation tool from Microsoft. There are... (read more at http://www.cnet.com/...windows-10-on-a-mac/
