LaunchBar Commander / Re: Excessively Large Node Listing
« on: February 10, 2009, 04:10 PM »
I see no reason for this section to be so large.  Certainly the names of the files aren't very long.  The one difference I can identify is that included in this listing is one that is a menu with its own child nodes, but none of these has a long name.  As you can see, the size is really excessive.  Is there anything that can be done to make this listing be more like the others in size?
I'm quoting my posting of January 29 because today I changed the one element that I thought might be responsible for the section's being so absurdly large, namely, that it included one menu with its own child nodes.  I removed that menu and put each of the child nodes as a separate entry, so that they'd be like all the others.  But that made no difference.  The listing is still just as large as before.  :(     :wallbash:

Which is exactly why I'm obsessed with Powermarks and related bookmark managers like Linkman.  I just want to dump everything in a container and find it almost instantly.  No tagging or organizing.
For the same reason, I too was a big fan of Powermarks and am now an even bigger fan of Linkman.  But that still leaves me with thousands of digital photos on my computer.  I wish I could locate individual photos as easily as I can my  bookmarks in Linkman.  In theory, metadata tags would probably do what I need, but I can't imagine trying to retro-tag thousands of photos.   :(

I love the Unread Posts feature.  More often than I'd like to admit, however, I'll mark something as Read, either because I've read it or because I have no interest in reading it, and then later the same day I'll decide I want to read or re-read the thread.  Sometimes, I can find it without too much effort, but at times I search and search and apparently don't remember the right words that would help the forum's search mechanism find it.  I'm not sure what feature to suggest that would enable me to find threads whose words I can't recall correctly--perhaps a list of all the posts that had appeared that day in my Unread Posts listing.  I don't know how feasible that is, but short of a brain transplant, that's all I can think of.  I'd welcome other suggestions (well, most other suggestions  :) ).

You might look at UltraEdit.  I haven't used the feature, but "persistent selection" is available.  UE also handles multiple files and has bookmarks, a tabbed interface, backup options, user tools, and scripting.

+1.  I used to use Boxer, but several years ago I switched to UltraEdit because it offered bookmarks and Unicode support, neither of which Boxer had at the time.  It was also less expensive than Boxer, though both are commercial products.  I like both editors, but UltraEdit remains my favorite.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: White Smoke 70% off
« on: February 01, 2009, 08:42 AM »
White Smoke is a little too intrusive, meaning that I seldom agree with the suggestions it comes up with - and this to such a degree that I have removed it from start!
I agree.  I had occasion to try this software not long ago, and though it identified some errors correctly, it sugggested changes for perfectly correct statements that made them incorrect, sometimes ludicrously so.  I found it too unreliable to use or recommend.

Whitesmoke.com is running a Super Bowl Sunday Special. They are claiming it is a 75% off sale, but it really is is a buy it at full price and get a bunch of free stuff sale.
They've been running this sale for at least the past five days (and perhaps for a lot longer--I just happened to have gone to their site on several of the last five days).  Each day, their website has a banner ad announcing the sale and claiming it's for that day only  :D .

LaunchBar Commander / Excessively Large Node Listing
« on: January 29, 2009, 08:57 PM »
One of the sections in my LBC is excessively large.  I don't mean that it has too many entries, but rather that it takes up an excessive and needless amount of space.   When I open most sections, they look more or less like this:

lbc_normal400.gif

But one is absurdly larger:

lbc_large400.gif

I see no reason for this section to be so large.  Certainly the names of the files aren't very long.  The one difference I can identify is that included in this listing is one that is a menu with its own child nodes, but none of these has a long name.  As you can see, the size is really excessive.  Is there anything that can be done to make this listing be more like the others in size?

I'd like the option to ignore a thread so that it doesn't show up in my Unread Posts list. Ignoring entire boards is useful sometimes (although it can be hard to find) but if there's a single thread in the Living Room that I don't care to follow anymore, I'd really like the option to ignore it.

cyberdiva: some editors do support unicode documents, but fail to auto-detect document encoding if the document doesn't start with a BOM... kinda similar to the broken webpages not specifying document encoding.
Thanks for the info, f0dder.  AFAIK, the program I had trouble with most recently unfortunately does not support unicode: askSam 7, a flexible database program that I like a lot (when I don't hate it  ;D ).  There have been a number of messages on their forum complaining about the total lack of unicode support.

I'd add Powermarks, a bookmark manager I used and loved for more than a decade, and InfoLink, the program I used to check links on my websites.  The InfoLink developer, BiggByte, no longer even mentions the program on its website.  Someone put up a comparison of a number of link checkers and said that InfoLink has been discontinued.  He claimed that the program was now available from BiggByte for free, but the link he provided no longer works.

To my surprise, I've been able to replace both of the above programs with Linkman , which has been reviewed and discussed on DonationCoder.  Not only is Linkman a superb bookmark manager, it's also a very fast and reasonably accurate link checker.  I find it MUCH faster than InfoLink and more accurate as well.

LaunchBar Commander / Cannot make a visible window modal
« on: January 16, 2009, 07:18 PM »
I have no idea what the error message in my subject header means, but when I tried today to set up LBC (version 1.86.01) on my laptop (IBM ThinkPad T40 running WinXP Pro SP2), I installed it, minimized it to the system tray, and then started to configure it.  At one point, I tried to right-click on it to add more nodes in Preferences, and I got an error message box that said "Cannot make a visible window modal."  Since I had no idea what the problem was, I decided to reboot and see whether that helped.  It did not.   I noticed that it had not started with Windows (I suspect I had somehow not checked that option), so I clicked on the destop LBC icon, and I again got the error message.  At that point, I decided to uninstall LBC and start again.  However, before I do, I'd like to understand what had happened so I don't encounter the same problem again.  I should note that I had no trouble installing LBC on my desktop a week or so ago.  It's working beautifully.  That's why I wanted to put it on my laptop as well.

989
I think it should remember its state -- so if you close while minimized it should start up minimized -- that's the idea anyway.
i could make it an explicit option though.
Yes, that's the way LBC works for me.  I was surprised and delighted when, after being minimized to the tray, it opened minimized the next time I started my computer (and from then on).  I think it would be great, however, if you could make an explicit option.  I remember looking for one and being disappointed not to find one.  I didn't realize at first that LBC was smart enough to remember what I wanted without my telling it.  :)

I am delighted to report that mouser has fixed the glitch I wrote about at the start of this thread.  He has posted the new version of LaunchBar (1.86.01) on the LaunchBar page.  Thanks again, mouser, for this wonderful program!  :greenclp:

DesktopCoral / Re: Corral has 2 r's
« on: January 13, 2009, 03:48 PM »
nice one chris.  can you site cite an authority for that?
The Blair Handbook, 3rd edition (2000) says that one should "use an apostrophe and an -s to form the plural of letters, numerals, and symbols" (p. 681).  Patricia T. O'Conner's delightful book Woe is I: The Grammarphobe's Guide to Better English in Plain English agrees.  :graduate:

ah this sounds like it might just be a simple bug in my code.. ill have a look and see if i can't fix it and release an update asap.
Thanks very much, mouser.  I love LaunchBar, even with this bug.

Explanation here
Thanks very much, PhilB.  Now that I see where it is, I'm not surprised that I couldn't find it on my own!

For quite some time, I've been trying to figure out what the little squares mean off to the left (just above the number of Posts).  I notice that the number of squares varies and seems to have nothing to do with the number of postings.  Also, at times the color varies as well.  I'd be most grateful for an explanation.

Thanks in advance.

Feature request:
a way to sync between work/home computers.  Powermarks use(d) something called NetSync.
Isn't it just as easy to save your Linkman file to a flash drive and then transfer the file to your Linkman setup on the other computer?  That's what I did for years with Powermarks.  Even after they made Net Sync available, I preferred keeping my bookmarks to myself; I also didn't want to be dependent on the availability of another site.  I currently have Linkman on only one computer, but if I put it on another one, I'd probably use the same sync procedure I used with Powermarks.

Eventually, I tracked down the problem to either " and ' characters in this particular instance and when I deleted all of them, the problem went away.
I suspect it has something to do with UTF-8 encoding as well.
I've seen this when someone cuts and pastes from MS Word or other programs that use slanted apostrophes and quotation marks rather than the straight up-and-down ' and " .   If this occurs in text over which I have some control, I'll change all the slanted stuff to straight up and down characters -- a simple search-and-replace will usually do the trick.  And yes, I think UTF-8 can represent the slanted stuff, but programs that can't handle UTF-8 will show the slanted stuff as strange characters.

998
I have clipped some text of a webpage and it appears to contain just text.
However, when I examine it with different utilities like AptEdit or Metapad, I notice that there are hidden characters like â€.
I don't think these are "hidden characters"; it's more likely that the document was encoded in UTF-8, and that AptEdit and Metapad can't handle UTF-8.  I had a similar problem with text that looked normal in UltraEdit, but when I tried to import it into a different program, all kinds of strange characters appeared.  I went back into UltraEdit and saved the document as ANSI/ASCII rather than UTF-8.  Then, when I imported it again into the program that couldn't handle UTF-8, it looked normal.

999
Feature requests:
--Add all 4 buttons to Firefox.  (Search in Linkman, Show Linkman, add to linkman, add to linkman and edit)
Since right-clicking on the Linkman Fox icon gives you all four possibilities, why would you want separate buttons?  Wouldn't that just add clutter?

1000
Since no one has replied, I think I may not have been as clear as I had hoped.  Perhaps two screenshots will help clarify the problem.  I set hotkeys for the various node categories on my launchbar.  For example, CTL+Win+M will open the node showing my MS Office apps.  It normally looks like this:

launchbar_ms.gif

I've also set a hotkey (CTL+Win+C) for the node for Control Panel apps (that node came with my copy of LaunchBar Commander).  However, if I use this hotkey to open the list of Control Panel apps, the next time I use any other hotkey, the Control Panel apps listing will be attached at the end.  For example, the next time I try to bring up my MS Office apps, the listing looks like this:

launchbar_combinedcr.gif

(I hope the images will show up--they don't in my preview screen  :( .  Also, I've cropped the second image to make it small enough to show up full size.  The actual listing includes all the Control Panel apps, not just those starting with A.)

This happens with all the hot key listings: once I've used the Control Panel hotkey, all others will include all the Control Panel apps.  The only way I'm able to correct this is to shut down LaunchBar Commander and then restart it.
