Official Announcements / Re: JULY 2009 Discounts and Giveaways
« on: June 29, 2009, 04:24 PM »
I think the 85% discount for TheBat! has now disappeared.  It's no longer at the link provided in the announcement.

Mouser, thanks so much for your prompt and detailed response.  You're right that the shortcut that was in the Start Menu was oddly named--it was View a File...lnk.  And it wasn't with the .exe file in Program Files but rather in the directory I mentioned in Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Quick View Plus.  Anyway, I took your advice (I think) and added the qvp32.exe file to the Start Menu.  If I go to the Start Menu and click on qvp32.exe, it opens Quick View Plus.  And FARR can now find it.  However, when I type in qvp in FARR, I get the following:

farr_avp.gif

I can't tell from the preview whether this is visible.  I hope it is, and I hope it shows duplicate listings that I don't understand and don't know how to get rid of.

Also, I'm not sure I need an alias now, but your instructions didn't correspond to what I see when I go into Options and choose Aliases/Groups.  I don't see a myaliases.alias file.  Here's what I see:

farr_alias.gif

Since I can now get FARR to bring up the file I want by typing qvp, I don't think I will need an alias for this, but I'd like to understand the aliases feature better, since I'm likely to want to use it eventually.

Again, MANY MANY THANKS!

Find And Run Robot / FARR can't find .exe file - Newbie question
« on: June 29, 2009, 10:23 AM »
Mouser, after reading your recent comment about FARR being useful even if one already uses LBC, I decided to give FARR a try.  I asked it to find Quick View Plus, which I have in an old version (version 6).  I typed Quick View, and FARR came up with two possibilities: Quick View Plus and the uninstall link.  I clicked on Quick View Plus, but instead of opening the program, it simply took me to the directory C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Quick View Plus.  That directory has only two items--the uninstaller and a shortcut called, oddly, View a File...lnk.  Clicking on that opens Quick View Plus.  That seemed very strange to me, especially since there's an entire Quick View Plus directory under Program Files, and it includes a 40 KB file called qvp32.exe (in Program Files\Quick View Plus\Program), which is apparently the file that launches the program.

I then tried typing qvp in FARR, but that just brought up two identical entries leading to the Documents and Settings directory I mentioned above, plus the uninstall program.  And typing qvp32 in FARR yielded NO results.  I have no idea why FARR isn't going to the right place and giving me a result that will directly open Quick View Plus.

I decided that perhaps I needed to create an alias for this program.  I went to the Help file and found this statement: "These .alias files are located in the AliasGroups\ subdirectory of FARR, and are further broken up into AliasGroups\Installed and AliasGroups\MyCustom."  When I went into Options and selected AliasGroups, I found nothing that corresponded to Installed or MyCustom.

I'd welcome some help with this.  Many thanks in advance.

Trust must factor into the assessment, and if the scanner is just flagging anything that confuses it then it's really more chicken little then trusted companion. Especially when it's hogging massive amounts of system resources like Symantec or McAfee which scored high on said accuracy test.
I hate the fact that McAfee is a resource hog--I've thought of ditching it several times just for that.  However, I still use it, and I think these results help to show why.  They certainly do not suggest that McAfee is "just flagging anything that confuses it."  Indeed, it scored 3rd best on false positives, while also scoring very high on overall anti-malware effectiveness.

I just went on the WindowsBBS.com forum and immediately came upon an ad for Acronis True Image Home 2009 at 35% off through the end of June 2009.  The page with the ad on the top was this one: http://www.windowsbbs.com/index.php?s=.  I've never used this software and am making no claims for it, just passing along the information.

I always end up asking Martin after reducing myself to a drooling idiot trying!
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one!   ;D

As far as launch bars go, I'm delighted with LaunchBar Commander.  I didn't see anything in True Launch Bar to make me think of switching.

If you don't get an answer here, do try the Website Watcher forums at http://www.aignes.com/forum/index.php.  The WW developer, Martin Aignesberger, responds frequently and helpfully, and I suspect that if what you want to do is possible, he'll know or figure out how to do it.

Hi.  Bits du Jour today (June 20, 2009) is offering 1AVCapture for $23.98 instead of $59.95.  The software claims to capture and record "ANYTHING You Can Hear or See on Your PC!"  I've been looking for something simple that will do this, but I don't have time to test the program before the discount expires and I don't feel like plunking down $$ without knowing whether the program is any good (or whether there are other programs that are as good or better for less).  Is anyone familiar with 1AVCapture.  I'm not familiar with the company that makes this, PCWinSoft Systems Ltd, and there are no reviews on Bits du Jour.  If anyone has some info, I'd appreciate it.

885
Thanks very much, PPlandry and tranglos, for the suggestion to pay in euros.  I confess that I never thought of doing that.  I'll definitely look into doing so, though I do wish I could find the program discounted somewhere.  Bits du Jour, perhaps, or, of course, Donation Coder.

886
Any chance that Donation Coder can get a discount on Archivarius?
Well, I was hoping that perhaps a miracle would happen, but since it hasn't, I went to the Archivarius site to (gulp) purchase the software.  But when I clicked on one of the two payment venues, ShareIt, I was told that 29.95 euros would come to $45.62.  That seemed unduly high, so I clicked on the other venue, RegNow.  It told me I'd have to pay $46.70!  I then went to an assortment of conversion sites, all of which told me that I was being gouged by ShareIt and RegNow.  According to the five or six sites I used, 29.95 euros should be the equivalent of anywhere from $41.69 to $41.82, which means I'm being charged $4 or $5 more than I should be.  I decided not to buy the software after all, since I hate being taken advantage of, and I wasn't all that sure that I needed Archivarius, I simply wanted it.  Guess I'll wait until I can get it at a discount or my desire for the software outweighs my common sense.

That solution worked great for me right up until I discovered the Sage extension and started doing most of my daily browsing via RSS feeds. I also keep a special favorites folder up on Firefox's bookmark toolbar for all those other sites I regularly visit. That combination works so well for me that, like MilesAhead,  I now just use a blank homepage.
Yes, some of what I used to check from my homepage listing I now check instead via RSS feeds.  However, there are still lots of sites to which I'd like instant access that either don't have RSS feeds or that I want to view not for changes but for information or services I want (e.g., Jacquie Lawson's impressive greeting cards).  And by having these sites all listed on my homepage, I can access them easily no matter which browser I use (since I've set all browsers to use that same homepage file).  I also don't have to have yet another toolbar (bookmarks) taking up space in Firefox.  So for me, this arrangement is more interesting and more useful than a blank homepage.  But to each his/her own.  :)

888
And clearly you could build your own page, that might be the ultimate solution.
-Steven Avery (June 15, 2009, 07:01 AM)
Yes, this is what I did a number of years ago.  I made a very simple page in HTML and set it to be the page my browsers open on.  It has two advantages: I have a ready listing of the sites I want to go to most often, and I am not dependent on a specific Internet site's being up for my homepage to load.  Since the page is located on my hard drive, it loads reliably and instantly.  Of course, I can easily update the page when I want to add, change, or delete an entry.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: White Smoke 70% off
« on: June 11, 2009, 02:27 PM »
I've already expressed my very negative impression of White Smoke.  I might just add that the Neat Net Tricks software panel reviewed WhiteSmoke earlier this year.  Of the six panelists, four said that they would NOT continue to use the software.  One added, "In years of reviewing programs for Neat Net Tricks, I am hard-pressed to recall a program I have been dissatisfied with on so many levels."  The entire review can be found here.

I'm traveling, and I unfortunately didn't see this message until now, when it's probably too late for people to take advantage of the BduJ offer.  But I just wanted to say that I've used HyperSnap for years, and I love it!  I'm especially fond of the auto-scroll capture and the extended window capture (the latter can extend width as well as length).  HyperSnap works very well, is frequently updated, and has a developer who is very responsive.

General Software Discussion / Re: Search with Bing

Just a quick follow-up to say that I've now uninstalled Online Armor.  I did so for two reasons.  One is that, in response to problems I wrote about in the OA forum, someone there who seemed to be knowledgeable told me that yes, I probably had made a mistake replacing Sygate with Online Armor, since OA and McAfee Enterprise are known not to play nicely together.  Had I been happier with OA, I might well have given up on McAfee, which has protected me well but has also caused me a number of problems.  However, I ran into enough problems with OA in the short time I used it that I decided to remove it.  I'll probably try to put Sygate back, at least for now.  It never had a problem co-existing with McAfee.

General Software Discussion / Re: Desktop/email search program

@$30 for Archivarius

I wish!  Archivarius' list price (except for students) is 29.95 Euros, which according to the online conversion I just tried turns out to be $41.63.

894
Jim, according to some of the stuff I read yesterday before deciding to install Online Armor, the initial installation often produces what looks like a BSOD, except that after some minutes it revives.  Someone, perhaps Michael Horowitz in his CNET review, took OA to task for not warning people that this was normal and expected behavior during the initial installation.

I've now got OA installed and running, though I'm still a little uneasy with it.  It produces a mini-BSOD for about 45 seconds every time I reboot.  That, too, was something someone mentioned, but I'm finding it VERY annoying.  The last thing I wanted was to increase my already too-long bootup time.  :(   OA also seems to have caused some havoc with my system tray, with some icons appearing only on some reboots.  My linksys wireless network icon, for example, at times simply isn't there, even though I can access the Internet.  When that happens, if I right-click on the bottom taskbar and click on Customize, NO icons are listed!  This never happened before I installed OA.  I'll probably start experimenting with what I can turn off and what I want to leave on, since all I really want is a firewall.

895
Hi, Steven.  Thanks very much for your response.  It helped me decide to give up on "crikety old Sygate" and take advantage of the GOTD offer for Online Armor.  So far, all has gone smoothly (knock on wood, salt over my shoulder).

896
Yes, I saw this and was somewhat interested, since I'm still using Sygate  :( .  However, I also read Michael Horowitz's review in CNET, and I'm not sure whether OA is what I want.  Of course, I'm not sure I know what I want.  I also wonder whether there's any substantial advantage to getting the commercial version of Online Armor rather than the highly regarded freeware version.  Do any DC members have experience with Online Armor, free or commercial?

897
Thanks very much, katykaty and jeromg, for these interesting suggestions.  Ideally, I'd like to have a single program that does what I want, rather than using URL Snooper in conjunction with FlashGet (neither of which I currently have).  However, ultimately what counts most is what works best.  I look forward to giving Grab++ and perhaps URL Snooper a try.  Again, thanks a lot for the suggestions.

898
I haven't tried a lot of players, just WinAmp and SpiderPlayer.  But the latter quickly became my favorite.  It provides access to the thousands of Internet radio stations from Shoutcast and Icecast, and you can add other stations quite easily.  There's both a shareware and a freeware version.

Earlier this year (April 2009), there was a very positive review of SpiderPlayer from the Neat Net Tricks software review panel.

899
Thanks, steeladept, for the suggestion.  I do use Firefox, though I'm trying to minimize the number of extensions I have.  I think I'd also prefer a program that wasn't browser-dependent.  It could be freeware, donationware, or shareware, as long as it's pretty straightforward and simple to use.

Hi.  Does anyone know of software that can capture video shown on a website in a format other than the one used for YouTube?  Some TV websites, for example, allow you to watch episodes of programs, but I'd much rather be able to capture those episodes, put them on a DVD, and watch them on my DVD player while I use the treadmill.  I think I can probably convert the file to something I can put on a DVD, but the problem is to get the file onto my computer in the first place.   Is there software that can capture such video?  (Movie Extractor Scout can capture most YouTube videos, but I think not video in other formats.)

Thanks in advance.
