If it's legit, I wonder where can I get the plans, before they're suppressed.

Living Room / Re: Goodbye to my father
« on: May 23, 2016, 10:58 PM »
Please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences. Thank you for sharing! I, too, still love and admire my beloved father's memory so much! He was a private pilot, Amateur Radio General Class operator, Master Machinist par excellance, Inspector, and Engineer in the Aerospace Industry, real estate broker, and I forget what else, and played piano and harmonica, and gave us kids an unforgettable life and upbringing, as did my beloved mom. He was born in horse & buggy days and attended a one-room school room in a remote rural county as a boy, who lived to see the age of the atom and home PC.

Béla Bartók; 6 string quartets, chamber music, The Juilliard String Quartet, 1949. I've heard other string quartets play it, and this is by far my favorite version of this piece.

I looked at some pix of Second Life in duckduckgo 'images', and decided that it wasn't quite what I was thinking of.

I think the screen grab I did of the film 'Hackers' is more like it (in some kind of VRML format, as an experimental subsection of the 'normal' DC forum layout); users could be represented just as nicely by little white dots that streak when they move around, as in the red circle in this pic:

I think it would be totally cool to have a game-like 3-D subsection to the forum, where you have to move around in a virtual world of corridors, and either the walls or columns must be clicked on to open files. As a trial concept, I envision an experimental virtual UI which exists as much for the development of the 3-D UI concept, as for a forum of random ideas. Like the original DOOM, maybe keep the pixel count low at first to counterbalance the heavier data rates and prevent stack overloads or RAM lockups. You would need a game-like layout, with users having unique visible bots. Thus, users could interact with each other in real time, as well as with the virtual environment. Like a first person shooter, but no actual shooting; more instead like academia, with dialogue balloon pop-ups over the bots. Invisible spectators might appear as anonymous glowing firefly dots which can move about freely.

This is a link to duckduckgo images and shows numerous pix; I could wish for something like this in a Windows format.

Does it have to be real world? How about this from the film Hackers;

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced
« on: May 06, 2016, 07:04 AM »
Even weather forecasts aren’t safe from Windows 10 upgrade prompts | The Verge

Upgrade to Windows 10. You will upgrade to Windows 10. Upgrade to Windows 10 now. Upgrade to Windows 10 during a live TV broadcast. Upgrade to Windows 10. Just upgrade. Now.

I can see an astronaut on the moon.  One of his cylinders is empty.  He needs to switch to the full air tank.  He swipes his touch screen.  Up pops the message that he must now upgrade to Windows 10.  He is holding his breath.  After a few minutes the screen displays the message "Windows was not upgraded to version 10.  Rolling back."

He turns blue waiting for the reboot.  :)
How about; then he wakes up, having dozed off in the simulator, and realizes it was all a dream; then he stares at his screen and realizes, it's just started to happen, for real. Then we get a look at his face, and it's Tom Hanks (or ??? -your fav actor-).

Seriously, I really did just wake up from a dream -for real- in which the 'dreaded Windows 10 updater' had just started to flash on Desktop, and I said to myself (in the dream), "But--I have Windows XP!" Then I woke up, and realized, I really do have Win XP (which is supposed to be immune/exempt from this).

That got me to thinking about it. I'm no programmer, but what if someone wrote a DC snack that created dummy files all with the names of the updates Win 10 updater looks for; then it sees the dummy files all neatly in place, and takes no further action? I suppose it would depend on two basic factors; how sophisticated is the updater, and how realistic would the dummy files have to be?

I kid you not; I really did dream what I said, and was I ever happy to wake up to my real world Win XP.

Is this just their way of lashing out at Apple for not cooperating before?
Nope, it's because QT is a steaming pile of buggy code :)
Yeah, once I thought my pc might have a virus, but it was only a head code.

Okay, I uninstalled QT (which BTW helps reduce overload on my 100GB HD & 2GB ram laptop), but now WMP won't play mp3's and mp4's, whereas VLC plays them, but I can find no way to minimize VLC either to partial screen or to systray (the lower right mini-icon row), and it hogs the whole screen.
[Windows Key + D] ('Minimize all') forces VLC to minimize to Desktop.

I have the paid version of cryptoprevent; "CryptoPrevent is an Anti-Virus/Security Software Supplement, originally designed to prevent infection from the CryptoLocker threat which emerged in late 2013. Since that time, CryptoPrevent has grown into a robust solution, providing protection against a wide range of ransomware and other malware.

CryptoPrevent doesn’t stop there.  We are continuing development efforts to expand the software into something more than just a ‘security’ solution."

General Software Discussion / Re: youtube black blocking square
« on: April 13, 2016, 09:40 PM »
Is anyone else encountering this? It happens only with Firefox when going to any youtube user home page; a big black square blocks off most of the page; below is an example, using the sample search word 'wind', but it happens no matter what search word or user name I use:
I right-clicked on the big black square, and chose adblock, 'block image', and the black square disappeared and gave me back a normal yt screen.
update: Hmm, nope, still there, my mistake; it thought I was choosing a video and took me to it, was all that happened. If I go to any yt index of videos, the black square still appears.

The illustrations on this web page, Crewless 'drone ships' will be sailing the seas by 2020, are from a fascinating YT video at the bottom of the article page, which forwards to further entries in the series in the sidebar.

sheep shank knot
"The sheepshank is a type of knot that is used to shorten a rope or take up slack. This knot is not stable. It will fall apart under too much load or too little load."
So next, you need to learn how to set a line of pegs in a deadhead beam, to 'load' them under their own weight. Never t'fear, we'll make a proper seafarer and star voyager out of you yet, Matey.
PS - i was half kidding around, but I do seem to recall seeing where professional work crews use big wall pegs to hang up aircraft refueling hoses or electrical cable sets between service jobs on ships or at airports and such like.

Zip-lock sandwich baggies. PS - These also work great on sewing thread spools to prevent a classic rat's nest situation.

Meet Isabella Maria Garcinez - a Pedigree Silver Back Chinchilla...

holt you are correct - 6 foot concrete wall and a 30 meter driveway to road with 10 foot front gates (This is crime ridden South Africa!) She bolts indoors at any noise...

[/quote]CleverCat, that is an awesome pussycat!  :-* Loved her at first sight! The all-wire cage I used as a 'kitten playpen' to yard train our cat was actually an old chinchilla cage. Big and roomy even for a full size cat, and even more so for a junior.

I just wanted to add another tried and proven method for even the worst dog problem; toss the dog/s treats (from a safe distance) daily, or whenever you see them. Get the owner's permission if you can, or sneak-toss the treats if you must. It is virtually impossible for a dog to eat and bark or bite at the same time. At first, the dog will be suspicious and grudge you an angry bark, but over time, a few days or weeks, he'll change his attitude, and can become much more friendly. The only dogs this may fail with are those little high-strung yappers, or specially trained guard dogs. It may not stop him chasing cats, but his basic disposition will be enormously improved, which is definitely a step in the right direction. I've done this many times.

I found a sizeable and impressively cohesive chunk of mystery series soap opera 'The Edge of Night' on youtube that runs from July 17, 1979 to September 18, 1979, in 123 short consecutively linked videos that automatically roll over from one to the next. So far, I've identified Frances Fisher who played the mother of lead actress Kate Winslett in 'Titanic', Kim Hunter who played female chimpanzee psychologist and veteranarian Dr. Zira in 'Planet of the Apes', and Margaret Colin who played the White House Communications Director in 'Independence Day', but the entire cast is equally talented.

PS - CleverCat DCer's kitten Tinkerbell was killed by the neighbor's dogs, so out of sympathy and 'sensitivity', in the process of posting advice on how to yard-train a kitten using a wire cage as a 'kitten playpen', I switched out my Jetson's dog avatar in favor of the Jetson's boy Elroy. Once again, my deepest sympathies to CleverCat.

I'm sure you're correct in everything; it appears I posted inappropriately in the wrong thread; sorry.
