Sorry for bringing it back up, but I just recently learned of how to replace Task Manager. All you have to do is:

  • First, Open the Registry Editor
  • Navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options
  • Create a new key there called taskmgr.exe.
  • In the newly created key, add a string labeled debugger.
  • Edit the debugger string with the path (in quotes if necessary) to the program that you want to replace the Task Manager with.
  • Finally, close the Registry Editor

BTW, I learned of the above from a MSDN blog post (http://blogs.msdn.com/shawnfa/archive/2004/10/06/238923.aspx)

« on: February 14, 2006, 08:12 PM »
Description from the FileForum listing:

Songbird is a Web player built from Firefox's browser engine. It is open source and will run on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. It supports user contributed, cross-platform extensions. Play any MP3 on the Web without leaving the page. It can view Web pages as dynamic playlists that it can play, save, or automatically download every day. It plays your music too. It has all the features you expect in a desktop media player.

EDIT: it seems to be a peer-to-peer as it claims using networked computers, or maybe it's server-peer based - that will speed you up but the details are very unclear on their site, which I find worrying.

Basically, it searches for servers that are hosting the same file and then uses them along with the original server (which speeds up the download).
