General Software Discussion / Re: IE9 Release Candidate...Released
« on: February 14, 2011, 03:54 PM »
I don't like that they removed a bunch of features from IE8 in an effort to make it more Chrome-like. Not everyone likes Chrome's spartan UI, but it appears all browsers are headed that way.

Actually it does sort of make sense, since using mshtml (embedded IE) gives you all sorts of things like parsing internet addresses. What they forgot to do was remove the mouse and keyboard handling. I've had to do something similar for an app I wrote - the UI was quite complex and the easiest way was to build it using css+html (we could not use XAML) so it used an embedded IE browser. There is a lot of messy code required to make sure you disable all the default behavior and keyboard+mouse shortcuts, otherwise you get fun stuff like hitting Alt+arrow and the UI changes :)

Server 2008 R2 for me. I have WHS running on my file sharing box but with DE being dropped and newer 4k sector drives not being supported, I've decided to move away from it. I looked at various alternatives such as FreeNas, OpenFiler, even ZFS but I simply don't know Linux well enough and most open source software runs great on Windows anyway.

I will be installing Server 2008 R2, running WHS for pc backups in a VM, and maybe a few Linux distros in VM's as well. I look forward to trying out some specialized server software as well.

I'm a Roboform customer but switched to Lastpass a year ago and haven't looked back.

General Software Discussion / Re: Slash your windows boot time
« on: November 12, 2010, 05:38 PM »
I stopped worrying about boot times a long time ago. Don't care if its 10s or 5min since I only boot my pc for restarts due to updates, the rest of the time I use sleep, which is near instant with Windows 7.
