[...] but none of them are as simple as they should be and most don't seem to work as expected if at all.  [...]

Unfortunately, "simple" is a matter of perspective.
That being said, I know of two programs that do what you want.

The first, FileMeta, looks a helluva lot more overwhelming than it actually is.

2021-07-21  21∶14.png

To create an example, I chose ".ahk" files and added "system.keywords" (tags) to what is displayed and what I can edit in Windows Explorer's "details pane".

Here, you can see that's I've set the focus to the "Tags" field.

I didn't add a tag because I forgot to and I would go back and re-do it, except I'm sitting outside getting eaten up by mosquitos and if I get up and go inside, I'll never finish this reply.  So I'm suffering the loss of blood to small flying creatures, as I hurry to finish this reply.

The second one is Windows Property System View by Nirsoft

I haven't tried it, but it looks simple.

Goog luck!

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: version 2.55?
« on: December 04, 2020, 01:38 PM »
I see in Sumo that someone is running a version 2.55. Am I missing a newer update/download somewhere?
Best,
-J

John,

lol... to answer your original question, YES... there is a beta version of CH+S... it's 2.55.0

The thread that contains the download link

The link is at the bottom of the first message. (mouser's original message)

I STRONGLY SUGGEST that you install it in a different directory than your current copy of CH+S.
I started using the beta almost a year ago(ish) and lost a handful of CH+S databases to db errors that caused the app to crash/hang.  Every time I'd (re)install, I created a new directory.  I'm on #4, I think.   lol... HOWEVER, this one seems to be the winner - it works flawlessly and nary a peep out of it since I installed it, 3 minutes ago (OK, jk...I installed this version about 8 weeks ago).

 HTH!

Clipboard Help+Spell / Feature request: hotkeys for....
« on: June 15, 2020, 03:17 PM »
Hey Mouser.

I am looking to reduce the amount of clicks needed to access clips or to mark a clip as favorite.

Maybe my workflow needs some tweaking, but basically, when I copy something I want to "stash" (like tie a string on it...lol), I mark it as a favorite.
The favorite folder is sort of my "in-box" for clips I want to keep (it's more like a junk drawer... hahahaha).

Anyhoo, what I do is copy the string, then left click the CH+S tray icon, then right click that clip in the quick paste pop-up menu, and then choose "Mark this clip as favorite."

What would be awesome is to have a hotkey that allows me to mark the most recent clip as a favorite, without even viewing it.

So it would be like CTRL + C, then KEY1 + KEY2 to mark what was just copied as favorite.

It would even be fine if "Mark as favorite" could be a choice in the "quick actions" section of the quick paste pop-up.

I've said it before and I'll say it again....
I LOVE Clipboard Help and Spell!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Remind me of feature requests please

6. I will implement that after I implement a cure to covid.

Not to add burden you with added work, but... can you make it portable?
Oh!  And compatible with every flavor of *nix, and lest we forget those who make poor purchase decisions, include Apple/Mac versions as well... ROFL.

lol @ IainB's emoji chart...

Okay mouser...
(first, let me say that CH+S is pretty much my "most necessary" software on every one of my machines.... I mean, after the actual OS, that is...)

Off the top of my head, I have wished for:

  • settings to be saved during updates
  • some sort of way to see my hotkeys, without going all the way in to options (like right clicking on icon and having a submenu item that would display the hotkeys configured, in a simple box
  • be able to configure the database location from the GUI, as opposed to the .ini (especially because this gets borked on updates)
  • that "targeting" was spelled correctly in the "Window Watching" description under Tweaks  ;)
  • that when I choose "Modify Format/Case" in the clip memo, it opens with all settings cleared.  (right now, I have a saved format called 'Clear out all settings" which I have to choose FIRST, then accept those "modifications" and close the window, only to choose Modify again, and THEN config what I want modified...)
  • waking me up with fresh coffee in bed is pretty much a WIN, as well.... ROFL

I resolved the error message:  (and here's what I did to fix it)

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing...

_________________________________________________
FYI:
I'm running Win 7
My user account is a member of the admin group
I use 7-zip via the context menu to unzip archives

_________________________________________________

When I install an OS, I create a folder right off C:\ called "Portable Apps"
This is where I place all sort of apps that don't install themselves into C:\Program Files...

Screenshot of my basic setup....
SPAMALOT • 2020.01.04 • 13║52║39.png

What I normally do (but it wasn't working):

I usually download an archive to "downloads", unzip it to a self-named sub-folder in downloads, and then move that folder with the unzipped contents to my C:\Portable Apps\ directory.

What I did differently::

Instead of unzipping the archive to a sub-folder in the downloads directory, I unzipped it DIRECTLY to it's own sub-folder in C:\Portable Apps\

Once it was unzipped directly into the directory it will remain permanently, I ran the .exe with with admin rights (from the context menu), and it registered (this step always worked though).

I then right clicked on the help.txt file for F2F and chose "Files 2 Folder" and wallah!

No more error!!!

HTH anyone else with the problem...

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Feature request - realizable option
« on: November 26, 2018, 09:12 PM »
It would just show the contents of a single group of your choice -- so you could have it show an arbitrary group, or the NEW group, or Favorites, etc.  Maybe a simple dropdown so you could change the group listed easily.

I imagine it would be something similar to this?
https://www.ntwind.c...sticky-previews.html

Excel also has this feature; it's called "Camera." To access it, you need to add it to your ribbon/QAT...

Wooooooohoooooooooooooo!!

You rock, Mouser!!!

Halp!

I print clips using Clipboard Help and Spell's printing function.

But the font is so tiny!

Is there any way to make the font larger?

@IainB

I ran thru it, but it's too lightweight for me.
I use EssentialPIM, which has it's own faults, but it's the best PIM I can find (and believe me, I look! ROFL...)

Hi again, Mouser!

Here's another request that maybe can be done?
(I suspect it's not as easy as one thinks, however.... :o )

I use Title Case for a LOT of strings; I use Clipboard Help and Spell's Title Case formatting function to help.

However, I prefer to leave words with 3 letters or less as "lowercase" (as is the standard).
ALSO, I capitalize some words which would normally be left lowercase, if I used the rule above.

(I think there's a set of capitalization rules that dictates which words get capitalized, but I go by "eye"... I'd look up the rules for you if there was a remote possibility something like this could be done)

Examples:
(using last two subjects I wrote)

Normal (sentence) case:

  • Feature request: remind me of clip
  • Feature request (or modification?): title case - with words to leave alone

"My" Title Case:

  • Feature Request: Remind Me of Clip
  • Feature Request (or Modification?): Title Case - With Words to Leave Alone

(note that "Me" in 1st clip is capitalized, even though it is only 2 letters - this is an example of how I don't leave all small words alone... :D

What do you think?

Cheers!

Drats.  I had a feelin' you were gonna say somthin' like that....

I have/know of 92 billion simple reminder apps.
But Clipboard Help and Spell is where all my data seems to coagulate...
(Everything is captured by Clipboard Help and Spell, and then I need to disseminate the captures to their ultimate destinations (PIMs, databases, emails, etc))

So removing a step of pasting to a reminder app would be handy.

THAT BEING SAID:

There's an app called Stickies by Zhorn which has an API.
http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/api/

Stickies is also on my "can't work without it list", and has a PERFECT reminder function.

And being a Cisco engineer, I know nothing about APIs ;D, so I was wondering if maybe there's a way to make the two apps talk?
If they can, that would make Clipboard Help and Spell *AND* Stickies both Killer Apps.

And you're welcome for the kind words.
You deserve them.

Not often you find a programmer worth their salt, let alone who's nice and writes apps you actually use.

Cheers!

Clipboard Help+Spell / Feature Request: Remind me of Clip
« on: May 23, 2016, 05:39 AM »
Good Morning, Mouser!

I'm hoping you can (somehow?) create the ability where I can be reminded of a specific clip at some point (mins, hrs, days, months) later on.

I'll explain with an example:

I'm in Google Contacts and copy Mr So-and-so's name and phone number to Clipboard Help and Spell.
I'll need to do something with that clip later on, but have no time now.
(Maybe I need to call him, text the info to a friend, etc)

I'd love to be able to capture the string, and add a future date and/or time to have the captured string pop-up, blink the Clipboard Help and Spell icon, or something.
A capture hotkey with advanced options would be awesome.

While I'm at it, perhaps I could rename the capture right then, as well.

And.... uhhhh.... format it, too.
(I love  :-* the formatting tool.  I need a 12-step program for it!!)

Regardless of the possibility of this feature, I want you to know you are my hero and appreciate everything you've done already!
 :D

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Some thoughts on the next version

The sub Groups: the clips in the sub groups are also in the parent group. I don't see why, I want the clips separate. I have sub groups under parent groups because they are related, but I don't want all the sub groups clips also duplicated in the parent group.

Oooh!  oooohh!
I can answer this!   :D

(after taking me 12 minutes to figure out how to get a go@%mn image loaded... :tellme:)

I recall being able to do this, so I dug around and found it fer ya'.

QuickNote

Overview

QuickNote is a small utility I have written that makes it possible to quickly create Microsoft OneNote notes, without using Microsoft OneNote itself.

Just a note (haha) to let you know I nearly live in OneNote and have found NOTHING even remotely as useful as this utility.
I have 5 machines and they all have this executable.

I do not like OneNote's concept of a quick note.  Screen real estate is precious, but not only that, I have ADHD and your utility is MUCH better for people like me.  Because OneNote's quick note actually pops up and requires interaction, I risk losing the very precious focus/train-of-thought for what I was doing and starting to follow that momentary thought I wanted to get out of my head, in the first place!

MS should implement this, after remunerating you well.

Cheers,
and thanks again!

It's nice see that OneNote is now a free program.

Do have one hick with this software.
The other day, tried to import a .pdf file but it created separate "pages" for each page instead of one page (as hoped for) but ended up with over 400!

Go to FILE tab
Choose OPTIONS
Choose ADVANCED
Scroll nearly to bottom, for PRINTOUTS
Uncheck "Insert long printouts on multiple pages"

Evidently i went on to delete the OneNote pages but it seems that we can only delete one page at a time.
Fortunately, i was able to transfer the other pages to another "tab" then simply delete the one with all the extra pages.
Wish there was a way to batch delete some pages instead of one at a time.

Deleting multiple pages at once is very easy, even more so for your particular situation.

The list of pages is displayed in the left sidebar:
Clicking on a page name once displays that page.
However, clicking on it twice turns the bar with the page name darkish gray? taupe? puke?
That page is now "selected."

Now use either the SHIFT or CTRL key to select other pages.

SHIFT selects all everything in between.
CTRL "cherrypicks."

The bars of the additional selected pages will also turn dirty diaper colored.

Don't bother to right click.
Just press DELETE.

Your printout was created as a single "top-level" page and a billion subpages.
Make sure you collapse all the subpages first.
To do that, mouseover the top-level page bar, and a carrot "^" will appear.
Click the carrot and it will collapse the pages, displaying a v "v"

Click the top level page twice to gray it and hit delete.
The whole set of pages will be deleted.

HTH.

Find: ^([^\-\+]+)([\-\_])([^\-\+]+)([\-\_])([^\-\+]+)(.*)$
Replace: $1DASHSEP$3DASHSEP$5$6

Find: DASHSEP
Replace: -

What this does: Changes the first two dashes (or underscores) into the word DASHSEP
Then puts back the first two dash/underscores with dashes (note that if the first two were an underscore they will change to dash).

Dude.

That was utterly genius!!

Well played, sir.  Well played.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Sorting - latest copy on top
« on: November 21, 2014, 07:16 AM »
wrbird,

For the first question:

Thanks for showing me that setting for the first issue, but that doesn't quite do it.

Can you clarify what is/is not happening?
Just a reminder that Clipboard Help + Spell will open up with whatever layout was being viewed at the moment you closed it.
So if you're like me, maybe you were testing stuff and closed it down when you were in a layout that's not the one you want?

As for the scrolling to the bottom upon first start...

I see what you mean.
I closed down Clipboard Help + Spell completely.
I then restarted it, (minimized to tray) and added a few clips.
I opened the Main Window and although my newest clips were at the top, the scrollbar was near the bottom.

I dragged the scroll bar to the top and scratched my head for moment...

Then I tried this:

I minimized Clipboard Help + Spell.
I added a few more clips and reopened the main window.

The newest clips were at the top, and so was the scrollbar (yay!)

So, I think it's a case of having to drag the scrollbar up to the top when you first start Clipboard Help + Spell... and just that once.

Subsequent maximizing and minimizing of Clipboard Help + Spell's main window will "remember" the scrollbar at the top.

Try it, and see if it "sticks" for you, also...

For the third issue, I see you are correct!  I was wrong about the individual folders being unique.  I often show and hide columns and sort and filter, etc, but I'm really partial to a specific set of columns being displayed and the sort order overall, so I never noticed that all folders were affected by the changes to one folder.  (I can be quite brain dead at times, trust me...   )

Now that my brain hurts from thinking, I've gotta take a nap.

Cheers!

Yup and Yuppers!

The first issue gets resolved here:

2014-11-20 ~ 009 [TURNIP].png

The second issue is actually the default modus operandi...
IOW, when you save a layout, each folder is saved just exactly like however that folder it looks, at the moment you save the layout.

So, you can have some columns visible for your collection of cat porn, and your clips of funny knock-knock jokes sorted by how many times you snorted while laughing when you first heard it.

Sort the cat porn according to how many kittens resulted, add the viewed column to your folder of pictures of salted and buttered popcorn, and save the layout.

Then reopen Clipboard Help + Spell.

It's like Christmas, but even better, thanks to kittens and butter!!!

Cheers,

Spammy.
Wistfully wanting a kitten.  <sniff>

Scarily, I'm feeling quite blond right now, trying to attach an image.

Here's how to do it:

► Set up your layout however you want it.
In your case, you would have the "Created" column sorted with the little arrow pointing down.
MAKE SURE this is the case, in every folder you care about!

► Go to Layouts (Top left, part of the menu)

► Go to bottom of the drop down and pick "Save as..."

► A small window will pop up - it allows you to save certain features of your new layout.
Live on the edge like a true madman and check all 3 boxes.

► In the small box, there's a button that says "Save Now As...."
    Click it.
If you didn't terminate the human race by clicking it, then go ahead and name it.
The file manager will close and you'll be back, staring at the little open box.

► Dismiss it like you do your lowly servants, by clicking the "Done" button.

And that, sir, is your solution. :)
