Curt,
thanks for the pointer(s)...still no go concerning ExtraView (neither bottom, nor left), whichever way I try to get there (including the one suggested by you).

All I get is this, see pic., i.e. the ExtraView area opens but nothing can be opened in/tranferred to it (including no tabs, no command buttons etc). Any old way I try to get things "to the ExtraView", all navigation happens within the DefaultView area, worse even: if I try to use a Keyboard shortcut to "move active tab to extraview", the tab (correctly) disappears from default view but never "arrives" in Extraview, ie it effectifely closes.

Any ideas? Any special settings necessary?

Hi all,
I cannot seem to make "ExtraViews"(Dual Pane) work, whichever way I try, in W7(64bits)/Classic View. Anybody with similar experiences (let alone tricks or solutions)?
thanks for any pointers

General Software Discussion / Continuing with XP
« on: February 06, 2014, 06:00 AM »
Hi all,
as the day of end-of-support for XP draws near, I am searching for a solution for my wife who staunchly refuses to leave her well-tuned XP behind. (For her, even the thought of going to W7 raises major fears of having to face the learning curve)

Soooo...Linux and some Virtual Machine within which to run XP appears to be the solution (after considerable amounts of reading).
Right?

Problems: 1) an "old" (but trusted, cherished etcetc) netbook maxing out at 2GB RAM (and HDD 100GB), and 2) strict refusal to "have anything to do with Linux", ie her unwavering conviction (after several attempts at trying various distros, all aborted at the console) that if the OS is Linux then it must take the absolute minimum of interaction/mouse clicks to "get into" the VM and thus XP (and, needless to say, no "hassle" whatsoever with Linux being set up and running on the netbook).

I'd be very grateful to hear reports/advice/help re which Linux distro is the most appropriate in this situation, ie the leanest (both RAM and disk space requirements) and the "most invisible" (as per (2)  above).

Thanks for any and all pointers!
ck

Hi all,
which notepad replacement do you guys out there use which has *crash recovery*??
(i'm still using Caderno [http://www.freddy1990.com/index.php?page=product&name=caderno] but find it to be a bit buggy,by sheer desperation i'm sticking to it because the very few other progs with this feature are not "barebone simple" enough for my needs)
thanks for your insights, chrisk

hi mouser and all,
well, pity that the project is sort of "suspended" for now.

my question then to all the "calendar searchers" out there is:
does anybody know of a "simple and basic" calendar program which, as mouser initially stated, offers click-and-enter-text AND (this being the function i definitely need) click-and-change-backgroundcolor [multiple color choice!] for any day of the grid?

thanks and cheers
chrisk

Hi Mouser,
just checking in to see where things stand re the "minimalist calendar".

It seemed to me, after trying all the ones mentioned here (and a good many others) that ClassicCalendar from Wellcraftedsoftware was really the only one fulfilling the requirements, though not all of them.

I also wanted/needed the option to color-mark days (eg left-click->enter a note, right-click->different colormarks), which this program presently does not offer. I've written to the author. Unfortunately, no reply.
(As a matter of fact, *no* prog I've seen offers this in a simple straightforward manner, it's always, when available, tied to specific task categories)

Maybe one could take the ClassicCalendar framework as a starting point for your project, Mouser?
Thanks for further info and pointers

DcUpdater / Update frequency
« on: April 18, 2012, 01:49 AM »
Hi,
as a faithful (and very happy!) user of DcUpdater since its very beginning, I am wondering how to prevent the program to run *every day*,in its latest version 1.30.1
Didn't use to be that way.
Is there some ini file entry that could be made so that we can adjust how often (every day/week/month etc) the program starts?
Thanks for the program and for your help,
ck

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Clipboard_Viewer_Ignore/Security
« on: March 17, 2009, 01:20 AM »
dear mouser,
thx for the explanation...you're right, i thought mostly of that security aspect of the use of CHS which would make things _going out_ (so to say) of the clipboard tool (CHS) "invisible". the other aspect, of CHS not monitoring things _going in_ (eg from password progs etc) is, to a large degree, already taken care of by the "Ignore applications" setting, as i see it. maybe one way around would be to have one category (similar to Favorites) being "secure"?
sorry for the confusion and thanks so much for your clarification,
chrisk

« on: March 16, 2009, 11:05 AM »
thanks mouser....ahem, so i guess the conclusion is:
i don't know what i'm to do with the demo so as to make certain clips in CHS (say, all those in the favourite category, or somesuch) be ignored.
maybe a one-line pointer, please?
thanks,
chrisk

dear mouser,
saw that you've implemented the IgnoreClip thing...wonderful...but i can't seem to find how to make it work. can you please give a short instruction.
thanks,

thanks, rjbull, a good *partial*  solution...and, yes, mouser, if and when you see a way to make CHS support that feature, i think it would take care of a really useful "security" aspect!
thanks for your help,
looking forward to an improved version!

hi all,
just wondering:
is this security feature

implemented in CHS now?
and how does one go about making it work so that Favourite Clips for instance are "safe"?
thanks,

thanks deozaan and carol for your help!

inching along in the process, this is where i presently stand:

a) will scramble around to find an english XPPro install (or recovery cds) which corresponds to the same physical machine type, which (if my understanding of b.gates' rules is correct) should allow to use the Windows key/authorization and thereby replace the german O/S.

b) in the meanwhile, use
http://www.vmware.co.../products/converter/
and
http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
and put the old XPHome machine on the new machine, run it when necessary, but mainly "use" it to slowly build from scratch the new (then english) XPPro.

has anybody used these progs, any comments?
(especially interesting the uses which Vmware says are possible with VMTools, such as file transfers etc!!!...should make the transition really simple)

c) partition the new machine thus:
C:\ O/S
E:\ applications
F:\ data
pagefile on external HDD (one issue i'm not sure about: if one places a small pagefile on C;\, as the experts suggest, how does one get it "to the front of the disk"?? indeed: same question re the big pagefile on the external HDD)

much appreciate any input, advice, insight etc!
thanks,
chrisk

hi all,
i'm looking for ideas and advice re the following practical problem:

i'm working on an old-generation (PIII/800MHz/384Ram/30G HDD/XPHome) machine, finely tuned (never had to reinstall O/S over 5 years) to my personal needs, but reaching its (and my) limits.
i'm being given a new machine (CentrinoDuo/1800MHz/2G Ram/250G HDD)..._but_:
a) it has XPPro installed, and
b) it's the _german_  version.

now:
1) i can function with a german O/S, but would _much_ prefer an english version.
2) i have no experience with XPPro and therefore no idea whether an upgrade from XPHome is even worth the while.
3) i want to "move" my stuff to the new machine as quickly and "painlessly" as possible.

here is what i've to date considered:
re 1) don't want to incur extra expenses (ie no buying of an english version); a UIM (foreign language) "wrap" wouldn't work anyway (only works if the base version is english);
re 2) ?
re 3) is cloning even possible when going from one machine to another, and if so: how best?; maybe run the old O/S in a VM?; maybe install a double boot situation? or "simply" (assuming that there's a recovery partition with the original O/S) do a new install of my XPHome or a slipstreamed install?
4) and how, in whatever scenario one chooses in the end, best to set up the partitions (in view of the fact that it'll be a _long_  time before i get to the limits of this size HDD)? [this is obviously the last and in a certain sense the easiest issue]

much appreciate any and all insights!!
thanks,
chrisk

oh, sorry, lanux128, i expressed myself badly:
what i am looking for is a toggle _hotkey_ (the hotkey setting works for disabling, but doesn't...well...toggle).
hope this is clearer.
thx,

Skrommel's Software / Re: DragKing 1.3

further question:
and has nobody, since
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1076.0
figured a way to have the en/disable as a toggle??? (maybe skrommel has worked that into the ahkstructlib2 version, but that, as i said before, doesn't work for the 1.3. version here)
thanks for your help,
chrisk

yes, the 1.3 exe now works with  ahkstructlib1 (but not with ahkstructlib2, who knows why).
wonderful!

Skrommel's Software / Re: DragKing 1.3
« on: June 29, 2008, 07:16 AM »
thanks, lanux128, for your reply.
i have tried both the exe and the ahk, with the error messages as a result, as i mentioned...ie neither works.
what's surprising to me is that this is the first time that the exe version doesn't open (and give a choice re unpacking or not, if i remember right).
FYI: using XP/SP2.

for any further help,
my thanks,
chrisk

Skrommel's Software / DragKing 1.3
« on: June 29, 2008, 01:18 AM »
Hi all,
I am at a loss re DragKing 1.3. Cannot run the exe (error message re "cannot access...no appropriate permission") nor does the ahk want to compile ("ahkstructlib cannot be opened"). This has never happened before with any of Skrommel's wonderful progs. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
chrisk
