Verification is required. Settings will be retained
Any offline legit ways to verify and install? Need to update my base image/snapshot of my Windows.

Is the microsoft download link down? I'm stuck at http://www.microsoft...nloads/form.aspx?s=1 . Clicking the link on that page does not help either. Using Opera by the way.

Will my present IE settings be carried out if I upgrade? Do you still need to verify to install IE7??

Living Room / Re: Forum Discrimination....
« on: October 18, 2006, 07:30 PM »
.....In my attempt to reduce my time online, I've stopped posting in forums, except this one.  I used to post on this Lakers forum before, but I've stopped because every thread would eventually get hijacked by a wiseass or juevenile comments....
I like to give people and situations the benefit of the doubt. I've found that I'm less stressed and more happy, and (I think) equally important, it keeps me out of unnecessary arguments based on misunderstandings. Sounds like a win-win to me.

Totally agree with you and the rest.
I think I need to reduce my time online too. :D

Ah then it's clear to me. I will just use my internet suite firewall. No need to worry about these tests. :D

Not the forums here. :D
It's actually at a product forum.

Just need to rant a bit and let off the steam.

Do you guys have any experience?
The latest one I have blew me off.

I made a suggestion to have a FAQ sticky at one forum. No replies from any moderators. A few weeks later, someone made the same suggestion and wham! instantly(or a few hours later) 2 moderators replied. The FAQ is created.

The only difference is my post count is lower. I have 70+ and he has 250. I don't know why so many forums give priority to high post count users. Doesn't anyone start with 0 post count?

Don't forget about comodo. Huge fanbase and I think it has good results too.

Off Topic: Is leaktest that important? Or will stealth do just fine? Was following the firewall trend and bought LooknStop but now I just use all-in-one programs.

I used Jetico before. So many pop ups!! It's good but usability is nil.
Not for the faint hearted. Sometimes the pop ups will crash the pc. So it's best to install Jetico first and then one by one your other apps.

But that's version 1. Version 2 may be much better since it will be shareware.

from my experience of acronis and norton and powerquest - i'd go for paragon. that's what i use and it's as a result of using the others.

Is Exact Image a stripped down version of Drive Backup? Or is Drive Backup the new Exact Image?
Are they still developing their products?
Do you know how much it will compress? For eg. 2.3gb?

Thanks.

From Paragon website:

2.4 Do you allow upgrades from competitor products on special terms?
Yes, if you currently own a competing product, this is your chance to upgrade to an equivalent Paragon product with 50% off the normal retail price. Email ([email protected]) proof of purchase for the product you are upgrading from. Examples of acceptable proof of purchase include: a scan or photocopy of your manual cover or CD, sales receipt, screen capture showing your registration status etc.
Terms
- exclusive to end-users
- only ESD (Electronic Software Delivery)
- limited by one upgrade per request
- only selected Paragon products
- not available to resellers.

Not sure if we can use the Free Acronis 7 serial to get 50% off. :p

WOW  :o

I have version 9 and swear by it. Well, actually I swore before I bought it. That was kind of the reason why I bought it.  If you catch my drift. :-[

Hi tinjaw, can you post the changelog from 7.0 to 9.0? It seems like only registered customers can view changelogs. :(

Thanks.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is AVG really that bad?
« on: October 09, 2006, 07:10 PM »
I was thinking of getting Ewido,
& cause of that was thinking of getting the "AVG anti-malware".
Thats Ewido & AVG pro - innit? - or is it??

AVG often seems to come a bit down the list in terms of virus detection in any tests I've seen
which is a bit worrying (again: innit?? :) )

Yup ewido + AVG pro = AVG anti-malware. I've ask the author from one of the test whether he will include anti-malware next year. Most probably yes if Grisoft allow it. So that's very positive.

And its pricing is for 2 years and renewal is 50%. :D Great value.

Hi AdIyhc - I've never had any reason to contact Grisoft's (AVG's) support, so I can't comment
-Darwin

Well, that means no issue with other software. :) Great.

I use AVG too - at first the free version but for about 18 months the pro version. I upgraded to support development and so I could have it scan at sometime other than 8 am. I'm still running the anti-virus only, none of the rest of the security suite (I've not tried it). Overall, I've been using it for at least 2 1/2 years and have never had a problem.

Hi Darwin,

How do you rate the technical support during your use? I experienced some slooow response from one AV's technical support but their sales support is very good. :(

So now I'm making sure both technical/sales support are responsive before upgrading.

Ah at least someone loves it. :)
I'm thinking of cross upgrading my ewido to the suite.
Would love to see some comments on the suite.

General Software Discussion / Is AVG really that bad?
« on: October 09, 2006, 07:15 AM »
How come nobody shows any interest in its new security suite? Instead I see people discussing how good NOD32/Antivir suite is and they aren't even out or exist yet!

Topics on AVG usually end up with 0 reply. Does anyone buy the Pro version or its other versions? Why does most people kept saying AVG free is AVG? I think the new anti-malware version will be very different from its free version since it has ewido in it.

Is it really that bad/average that nobody wants to discuss it?

73
.....You put them back on the Windows firewall and hey, presto, no security problems and no annoyances. Good lord, if *Microsoft* can do it, why can't anyone else? :P

Speaking of excessive paranoia and cookies, has anyone ever actually had a problem with them?........

All the extras 3rd party firewalls add is to justify the yearly subscriptions. More functions, more bugs/crashes.

As for cookies, I turn off cookies unless I need them and clear them upon exit. It isn't that hard/troublesome since browsers nowadays can do this automatically.

74
Windows Firewall only offers inbound protection and is very good at that.
It's very silent too, protecting you in the background if you choose "No exceptions".

I will recommend trying it out. Not all microsoft products are trouble. :)
I myself use Look 'n' Stop. Slow development but it works perfectly.
(Would use Windows Firewall if I had not paid for Look 'n' Stop)
