Living Room / Evernote new behavior
« on: April 05, 2018, 09:17 AM »
I use Evernote, and love it now that I have taken the time to get it set up to work with my workflow.  I just experienced something, however, that makes me question my attachment to it, and wondered if anyone else had experienced the same.

Evernote asked me to update, and I did.  I just left the update running and went to bed for the night, so I'm not sure if it was the update, or Evernote itself, but when I came to my desk this morning, there was a web page in every browser with an Ad for Evernote Business touting the new spaces feature.  I went to my secondary work browser, and it was there too.  Took a look at my laptop- there too.  Connected to my work machine, and lo and behold, it was there too.

It struck me as pretty spammy. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Best use of a FOIA request ever!

You can now play the board games the CIA uses to train its agents, for free (via Reddit, tabletopgaming.co.uk)

The two games released so far include:
Collection: Players use intelligence techniques to solve intelligence problems.
https://www.muckrock...me-collection-38476/

Kingpin: The Hunt for El Chapo: Seems to be a first stab at something like this, so no real summation in the documents.
https://www.muckrock...-for-el-chapo-38475/

When you click on the link, click download in the responsive documents collection.  Both files are rather large, and the games are rather intricate, and surprisingly intriguing!

The one I'm waiting for is Afghanistan Sustainability: COIN Dynamics, though the Collection Deck one is supposed to be like Collection, but with CCG type mechanics.  But both are still classified.

As someone commented on the Reddit thread:

The idea of CIA agents looking for trouble every turn they don't find a monster really makes my inner child happy. And a little scared.

First a disclaimer: I run malwarebytes.  I don't really think that given my habits its a necessity, but I do it anyway.  Mostly for ransomware as my server got hit with it a while ago, though it wasn't user error, rather an exploit of RDP.  That was a real nightmare, so I continue to run it.

I was installing some things in msys2 and hadn't thought to exclude my dev tools directory.  MB incorrectly identified Pacman.exe as ransomware, and removed all rights from the file, and changed the owner to noone.  I have now added an exclusion, but is there a way to reverse the actions of MB, i.e. make pacman accessible?  Deleting it wouldnt' have been worse than this.

I really don't want to start from scratch with a new installation of msys2.  Does anyone know of a way to regain access to a file that's been locked down like this?

Living Room / Star Wars Last Jedi movie discussion

The Last Jedi

There's quite the controversy over this, but I think it's a backlash over the extended universe to a large extent, mixed with reasonable complaints.

I enjoyed it for the most part, while acknowledging the failures in writing and trimming of unnecessary plot points.  It's also conflated with different political movements, IMO.

Spoiler
The Finn/Rose detour to the Gambling planet, while cool, was unnecessary narratively. You cut it out, and nothing in the movie changes.  That's bad writing, IMO.  You have to be ready to kill your darlings, and that definitely applies to that whole subplot.

Site/Forum Features / Problem with Sizing of Font
« on: January 01, 2018, 09:47 AM »
A while ago, there was a guy that made his font bigger, and also red.  I'd always assumed that it was just him, but wanted to make the font in a post bigger.

[ size=12pt ][ color=red ]Default when clicking the size button[ /color ][ /size ]

Is there a reason it defaults to red when you click the font size button?

N.A.N.Y. 2018 / NANY 2018 Release: PlainTasks
« on: December 31, 2017, 09:22 AM »
NANY 2018 Entry Information

Application Name PlainTasks
Version 1.0
Short Description Displays 3 tasks for the day, one at a time.
Supported OSes Windows 7 and above (Any Windows OS that supports .NET 4.5.2)
Web Page http://thinkshui.net...software/plaintasks/
Download Link https://my.pcloud.co...dByYFLlveFYTMfYHPkny

PlainTasks
Overview
PlainTasks is a very simple task manager. I start out with the best of intentions, but have a problem maintaining a task list over time and making use of it.

This application is quite simple- a transparent window with the ability to load 3 tasks. At any time, only the highest priority will show. When you mark that task done, it will show the second in priority, and ask you for a new bottom priority task. That has been working well for me as an analog idea, and I just wanted to bring it to the digital realm.

Currently, it doesn't save the tasks- to force the idea that these are tasks to be done immediately, and not to be forwarded or put off. I might add features later, but as the analog version of this only has these features, I figured I should start there.

If you wish an analog version, or just want to see where the inspiration came from, check out The OnTask.

Notes
As I put a lot into software normally, but most of the features are not used, I made this one on the principle of YAGNI.  So, if you use it, and have a feature request, let me know.  Otherwise, I'll assume that this is a good feature set, as it works for me.

Installation
PlainTasks requires .NET 4.5.2.  If you have Windows 10, you probably already have it.  If not, you can get it from Microsoft.

After you download PlainTasks, unzip it where ever you want to run it from, and run PlainTasks.exe.

Uninstall
To uninstall, just delete the folder where you unzipped the archive.

Documentation
As PlainTasks is intended to be rather simplistic, there's not much to using it.  Anytime you run it, it will show a dialog that has three spaces for three tasks.  Enter those, and click OK, and the first Task will be shown.

PlainTasks2.png

From right to left, the toolbar at the top has the following functions:

  • About this Application
  • Initialize Tasks (If you want to start from scratch with 3 new tasks, this is where you start)
  • Complete Task (Completes the current task, shows the next task in the list, and asks for a new task)
  • Add Task (If you have less than 3 tasks, you can enter another one from here)
  • Exit the application

General Software Discussion / Help Recovering Windows 7 password
« on: December 06, 2017, 09:49 PM »
While I was overseas last year, my wife decided to put a password on her computer.  I didn't think when I got back to create a recovery disk or even to ask her what it was.  Now, it appears she's forgotten (I say appears because the reason it rebooted was because of a power failure, then it did a chkdsk).

Anyone have a way to recover it?  Or know some trusted software?

What I've done:
1. Tried to log in as a different user.  Admin is disabled, and I can't get to the command prompt to enable it.
2. Every recovery option is password protected
3. Even though I know one of the DVDs I have is for her machine, they all say they aren't, so I can't get to the command prompt that way.
4. I was going to try the stickykeys hack, but not being able to invoke the recovery options I can't get that to work.
5. Her image has the password in it, so I wasn't able to get in that way.

I found uukeys (https://www.uukeys.c...dows-7-password.html), but not sure if that is legit.

Thoughts?

Site/Forum Features / Uploading images
« on: November 17, 2017, 04:51 PM »
I'm not sure if this is where this goes- I though there was a section for problems with the forum.

I was updating a post with a lot of images.  I was going to use imgur, but because of the size of the images when placed, I decided to try to upload them to the forum.

The bane of my existence:

Your file is too large. The maximum attachment size allowed is 8000 KB.

Does it mean the individual file?  I don't think so, since I reduced them by a lot.  One is 2.75MB, and it gives me this image.

So then I thought it might mean the total of all the files, and the message was just stupid.  Nope, experimented with that (i.e. removing an image and then adding another one) and got the same error.

I'm close to giving up on the post, since I've been trying to do this for an hour and can't get past it, even splitting it.

The posts start with this one:

Intro:

With the largest players removing the ability to have personal folders and share easily, I've been wondering the options.  I like Project Send (which I reviewed), but I don't want to go through setting that up in all instances.  Someone whom I support via Patreon sent me a link, and I was impressed at how transparent it all was.  So I looked into pCloud.  Still not totally sold, but I'm willing to give it a try because of the cool features.

Who is this app designed for:
Basically anyone who needs to share files in a secure and convenient way, but doesn't want to rely on public or expensive services.

Review

After creating an account, it showed the obligatory "take these steps to get more space".  I did, and am now at 14GB.  I downloaded and installed the client as a part of this process, and encountered the one thing that immediately set it apart to me.  It created a drive on my machine- a virtual drive that does not store files locally.  From the FAQ:

By installing pCloud on your computer (through its desktop application pCloud Drive), the app creates a secure virtual drive which expands your local storage space. Every change you make in your pCloud can be seen immediately on your computer, phone or tablet. All your devices are instantly synchronized and you have direct file access to any update you make.

So the 14GB that I have from pCloud shows up as a drive on my PC, but doesn't take up space on my PC.  There are positives and negatives to this for sure, but personally, given my use case, the positives far outweigh the negatives.  I imagine it's not immediate like the propaganda says- there is a cache folder maintained on your PC where these files are cached and uploaded, I'm sure.  It does appear pretty quick in uploading and downloading however.

You can also pay an additional amount to encrypt everything client side with zero knowledge if you want.

It's promising as I said.  My concerns are towards not knowing the company, or anything about where they store things other than the company is in Switzerland.

Why I think you should use this product

If you have to share files with others- either on a regular basis or in groups, this makes it pretty simple, without having to go through setting up any services to do so.  It also does the same thing as Dropbox, Onedrive, etc, and you can host a file in the public folder on your own account, as you used to be able to with Dropbox.

How does it compare to similar apps

So far, favorably.  All of the same functionality, and a little bit more.

Living Room / Disabling autoplaying videos in Chrome goes viral
« on: October 05, 2017, 12:38 PM »
Chris Meadows posted a Twitter tip telling how to disable autoplay video in Chrome: "If you use Google Chrome, go to

chrome://flags/#autoplay-policy

   --and set it to 'Document user activation is required.' Boom: no more auto-playing videos. You’re welcome." 6,000 retweets later, Meadows talks about how the viral response shows wide frustration with the web experience. (TeleRead):

https://teleread.org...n-chrome-goes-viral/

The question still remains, however...

It puzzles me that so many sites seem to think that annoying people is the best way to endear themselves to their audience, but even I hadn’t realized just how annoying people find it.

Why do sites insist on annoying their visitors?

Living Room / Unable to Terminate Domain Registration
« on: October 01, 2017, 07:16 PM »
I've had my domain registration services with Hover/Tucows for a while, and have been very pleased.  However, something strange happened, and I wanted to verify what I was told.

I had a domain for a client.  That client terminated services by non-payment.  I kept it around for a while, but then terminated the last renewal period.  I received a notice from ICANN about the registration, and checked it out.  First I went to the URL... and it was pointed to a questionable alternative site.  That alarmed me, as I'm the registered domain holder.  I then went to Hover to try to terminate, and there was no way to terminate.  I've terminated before, so I was a bit perplexed.

So I was able to get into support chat, and they said I could only let it expire.  They said that this was a recent change to domain policy.

Has anyone heard of this?

Microsoft 365 announced, bringing together Windows 10 and Office 365 subscriptions

Microsoft is hosting its Inspire 2017 partner conference this week, kicking off the event with a big announcement for business and enterprise customers. Many of its corporate customers already have Office 365 and Windows 10 subscriptions, and Microsoft is now launching new, simplified subscriptions that bring these products together with other tools.

"Today," the company said, "we’re excited to announce Microsoft 365, a new set of offerings that include Office 365, Windows 10, and Enterprise Mobility + Security, to create a complete, intelligent, secure solution." Microsoft said this marks "a fundamental shift" in its approach to how it designs and launches its products for the needs of businesses.

There are two Microsoft 365 tiers. Microsoft 365 Enterprise is based on the existing Secure Productive Enterprise plan, and includes Office 365 Enterprise, Windows 10 Enterprise, and the Enterprise Mobility + Security suite. Microsoft said this tier is intended for larger organizations.

Microsoft 365 Business will launch in public preview on August 2, and is designed for "small- to medium-sized business with up to 300 users. It includes Office 365 Business Premium, along with "tailored security and management features from Windows 10 and Enterprise Mobility + Security", as well as a "centralized console for deploying and securing devices and users in one location."

Microsoft 365 Business will be priced at $20 per user per month when it launches worldwide in fall 2017, but pricing of the Enterprise offerings haven't yet been announced. We do know that there will be two plans - Microsoft 365 E3 and 365 E5 - in the Enterprise tier, which will be available to buy from August 1.

Microsoft said that these new offerings will also provide "exciting new opportunities" for its global partner community, while simplifying management for the customers that use them.

Living Room / DayAgainstDRM
« on: July 10, 2017, 01:08 PM »
Yesterday was apparently the #DayAgainstDRM sponsored by https://www.defectivebydesign.org/.

I understand it, and would like it better if DRM was not included, but not prepared to cancel Netflix in an attempt to get it removed, in all honesty.  Books, to me, are a different thing.  O'Reilly was a publisher that I used for my development books, along with Packtpublishing and the Pragmatic bookshelf, Manning, and Apress.  In fact, they even published a blog post on it back in 2012: http://toc.oreilly.c...ree-day-forever.html.

Now, they're going against it- all books on their site are DRMd by default, as they've changed to being a platform, rather than selling their books.  When confronted with this, they said that you can purchase their books from other storefronts, but in all honesty, that's a dodge, rather than an absolute.  It might be understandable - except for the fact that PacktPub also has a platform, and still sells their books directly DRM free.

There's also on that defective by design a list of publishers that are supporting the day and discounts- got two really good books off of Pragmatic for 40% off.  Not sure when the codes expire.

Any thoughts?

Site/Forum Features / New Forum Feature request
« on: June 29, 2017, 09:59 AM »
So, after participating in the thread on new forums, and then seeing a separate conversation starter injected into the thread that was tangentially related, I did think of a Discourse feature that I wondered about the feasibility of - reply as a new topic.  I envision having some kind of form at the bottom of the quick reply box that allowed for you to tick something (make a new thread from reply) and a space for the new topic's subject that would default to something that let you know that this was a reply to that topic ("re: topic name" as a suggestion).  And perhaps a picker for the area, but by default, I think that the location of the original topic would be fine.

Thoughts?

Today, I needed to connect to the administrative share on my other box.  To my consternation, it didn't work, giving me an access denied message.  After a bit of searching, I came up with a link on TomsIT Pro.com on this very issue.

It's in the process of archiving on archive.is at http://archive.is/ox74W

Duplicated Below in plain text:

Using Windows 10 Administrative Shares
By Adam BertramMARCH 29, 2016 1:00 PM

In Windows 10, administrative shares work the same in domain environments. But when dealing with Windows 10 systems in a workgroup you'll have to use a workaround to get access to administrative Windows 10 shares—here's how.

The administrative shares that have been part of Windows for a long time have been a staple for remote file management for IT pros. Administrative file shares are the hidden shares on a Windows computer with a name that ends with a dollar sign. By default, these shares share out the contents of every drive on a system and also include shares like admin$ and IPC$ to perform various administrative functions. In Windows 10, these administrative shares still exist but require an extra step in order to work properly. Let's go over how to setup these administrative shares in Windows 10.

MORE: How To Set Up And Use File History In Windows 10
MORE: How To Add Windows 10 To A Domain
MORE: Windows 10 How Tos

First, in domain environments, the administrative Windows 10 shares work as they always have. You simply provide a domain user account with permission to connect to the remote machine and it works. However, an issue arises when you have two Windows 10 computers in a workgroup. While in a workgroup, when you attempt to connect to an administrative share on a Windows 10 computer you will be prompted for a username and password as expected but you will receive a misleading Access Denied error message.

This is related to User Account Control (UAC) and requires a registry modification in order to work properly. By default, UAC remotely restricts these shares from being accessed. In order to successfully connect to an administrative share, you'll need to disable this feature. To do this, you'll need to create (or modify) a registry DWORD value called LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy and set it to a value of 1.

To do this, either log onto the console of the remote machine locally, via remote desktop or some other remote console application. Then, type in regedit in the search bar, which will bring up the registry editor.

Once in the registry editor, drill down to the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System. Then, right click on the System, click on New and then choose DWORD (32-bit) Value.

From here, you are given the option to name the new registry value. Give it a name of exactly LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy and hit Enter.

Once you've created the registry key, it will have a value of 0; this needs to be a 1. To change it to a 1, double click on the registry value and put a 1 in for Value data.

This will create the registry value and should be all you need to connect to the administrative share successfully. This method should open up all administrative shares which consist of the C$, any additional drive shares, admin$ and IPC$.

When this step is complete, attempt to connect to an administrative share again. You should again be prompted for a username and password. Once given the appropriate credentials, you should now be presented with a file system listing of everything in the location that the share represents.

Developer's Corner / Your First Programming Language vs Now
« on: June 12, 2017, 10:09 PM »
In the thread Syntax in Different Programming Languages, I quoted this:

One of my best classes in college was a class called The Organization of Programming Languages.  It was taught by someone who was giving back time as a professional in the industry, rather than a professor.  Many years later, it is one of the only ones that sticks in my mind and that I use.  I've gone from and to many different languages - Pascal to VB to C to C++ to Delphi to C# (and I currently dabble in a few others).  The syntax has never been the problem.  You can always find syntax.  It's the data structures and memory management and such that are always the sticking point.  If you can get those, you can rapidly move from one language to another with a minimum of difficulty.

I came across that thread recently, and equated it to a thread on a different board, and figured I'd pose an exercise here.

  • What was your first programming language?
  • Can you remember a snippet from that language?
  • What's your current language of choice?
  • How would you rewrite that snippet in your current language?

My Answers are:

  • AppleBasic
  • Yes
  • C#
  • Yes

Code: Visual Basic [Select]
  1. 10 PRINT CHR(21): DIM CARDS(52),CHECK(52)
  2. 20 SUIT$ = "CDHS"
  3. 30 N$ = IA23456789TJQK"
  4. 40 FOR S = 0 TO 3: FOR C = 1 TO 13:CARD(C + S * 13) = MID$ (N$,C,1) + MID$ (SUIT$,S + 1,1): NEXT: NEXT
  5. 45 TEXT: HOME : NORMAL
  6. 50 FOR X = 1 TO 52
  7. 55 XX = X - 1: VTAB 1 + XX - INT (XX / 13) * 13: HTAB 1 + 10 * INT (XX / 13)
  8. 60 PRINT SPC( X < 10);X;I:";
  9. 70 N = INT ( RND (1) * 52) + 1
  10. 80 IF CHECK(N) THEN 70
  11. 90 CHECK(N) = 1
  12. 100 INVERSE: PRINT CARD$(N);
  13. 105 NORMAL: PRINT SPC( 5)
  14. 110 NEXT X

One of the interesting things about AppleBASIC is that you can have multiple commands on the same line.  Trying to put this into c# wasn't as easy as I thought.  There's still a bug somewhere in my code, and I know it looks messy, but I didn't want to put too much time into this.

Code: C# [Select]
  1. "\n".Dump();
  2. string[] cards = new string[52];
  3. int[] check = new int[52];
  4. const string SUIT = "CDHS";
  5. string N = "IA23456789TJQK";
  6. Random rnd = new Random();
  7.
  8. for (int S = 0; S  < 3; S ++)
  9. {
  10.         for (int C = 1; C < 13; C++)
  11.         {
  12.                 cards[C + S * 13] = Microsoft.VisualBasic.Strings.Mid (N,C,1) + Microsoft.VisualBasic.Strings.Mid (SUIT,S + 1,1);
  13.         }
  14. }
  15.
  16. for (int X = 1; X < 52; X++)
  17. {
  18.         check[X] = 0;
  19. }
  20.
  21. for (int X = 1; X < 52; X++)
  22. {
  23.         int cardPos;
  24.         while (1==1)
  25.         {
  26.                 cardPos = rnd.Next(52);
  27.                 if (check[cardPos] == 0)
  28.                 {
  29.                         check[cardPos] = 1;
  30.                         cards[cardPos].Dump();
  31.                         break;
  32.                 }
  33.         }
  34. }

It runs, and pulls the shuffled cards- but there are nulls in there for some reason.  I also skipped over the formatting code, as I wasn't going to try to do that in the console.

Anyone else want to take a stab?

I just got a message from malwarebytes when going to a youtube video (that I know the person that posted it) that Ransomware was detected and quarantined.  However, there was nothing in the logs, or the quarantine for that particular detection, which I thought was strange.  If you're going to pop that up, then you should log that, right?  After all, the user will be curious.

I tried to go to the same youtube video, thinking that if they detected it once, and aren't blocking the site, they'd show something else.  But nothing happened.

That brought me to the uncomfortable idea that perhaps they pop up those blocked references to make you think that they're doing something and are indispensable.

But they wouldn't do that, right?

Living Room / Password Managers ... vs. Not

An Interesting Article for discussion.

Password managers don't have to be perfect, they just have to be better than not having one (via Troy Hunt)

I never could figure out how to argue why I have a password manager, and why I stay with Lastpass.  He argues it very well, I think.  The best password is one that you can't remember.  And if you can't remember, there are several ways to augment your memory.  And all of those ways are going to have security problems if attacked consistently.

So what do you do?
