Conc. "easy way to zoom in and move around the image" XY has its famous "Mouse Down Blow Up" (mouse down on thumbnails pops the image in original size and "move-aroundable"). I have never seen anything better anywhere.

It is certainly not bad .

Would it be possible to have the mouse wheel zoom in and out in MDBU mode?
Could there be a zoom on click option in the full screen preview?
2-up and 4-up full screen preview with zoom to compare images?
Support for image formats that do not have a default handler, like RAW images? (since this is the portable file manager)
Can't say about RAW (the format of RAW is not always clear), but the rest would be technically possible.

Important things for me are:

  • A viewer with a separate full window where I can go through the images in the sort-order they are showing in the filemanager
  • A viewer that "talks" with the filemanager - if I start off by opening image #1 from the filemanager in the viewer, and work my way through to image #53 -if I close the viewer then- I want image #53 to now be selected in the filemanager - or at least to have focus
  • An easy way of opening the image currently in the viewer in an external editor
  • An easy way of copying the filepath of the image currently showing in the viewer
  • Consistent handling of different image filetypes; easy way to zoom in and move around the image (e.g. to check quality; or read some text in the image)
It's all there in XY already.
Conc. the "separate full window", you have a "full screen preview" in XY which might not be exactly what you want.

As someone who works a fair bit with images, but needs/wants a file manager (not photo-management) I gotta say I'm disappointed by *all* the big file managers. DOpus is the most image friendly, but even there there are some very basic image needs ignored (and I have posted in the forums & made official requests without success).
Interesting, tell me more. I'm currently thinking about developing XY more towards the needs of photographers...

General Software Discussion / Re: Filter directory tree by file type?
« on: November 20, 2011, 01:24 PM »
XYplorer 10.60 will come with a Flat View that can be filtered (wildcards patterns, Boolean logic, RegExp), level-indented, and sorted in a tree-like sort order. In other words, it comes with a directory tree filtered by file type. That's why I revived this old topic. :)

55
So someone still does not have it?  :D
Yes, many! And the deal was extended for another day. Another chance for the few that are left.

56
Also, this 10.20 release apparently "was" made on 29-Aug-2011, which is 5 days from now. So as a bonus, you get a time-travelling program too.
LOL  ;D

57
BTW, less than 12 hours (and counting down) if you want to go for the 50% discount on the XY lifetime license: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyten.php

58
The only notable exception (so far) is xyplorer, and I am not convinced it won't change - just that it hasn't yet.  I can only imagine this idea will suffer a similar fate if they try to accomplish everything claimed above.
The big advantages of a lifetime license are: (1) Extremely satisfied users that will spread the word (viral marketing). (2) Less overhead (non-coding work) for the developer: Every 10th customer or so needs support in how to pay or how and where to enter the license key. Lifetime license customers are usually "set and forget" regarding these things.

So there are no plans at all to drop the XYplorer lifetime license. It works great! But it will get more expensive (because currently it is just too cheap for the value).

59
Another approach, may be simpler, and works with other programs...

Search for the strings "Copy path to clipboard" "context menu" in a good search engine... Download and install a program or small .reg registry file to add a context menu "Copy path to clipboard" to do just that (inspect it / virus scan it for safety first). Then you can do just that in windows explorer or any list of icons (such as the open/ save menu dialogues of most applications). Easy, certainly works for me.

Ctrl+P in XYplorer. No need for an extra app. :)

Anyway, in the latest (not yet official) XY version you can easily create a toolbar button or a keyboard shortcut that will append the path of the selected item to a growing list. This list is even (optionally) retained across sessions, and you can take it with you on a portable device (to collect more paths abroad ;)). At any point in time you can shoot that list up to the clipboard to paste it wherever you need it.

Look for Permanent Variables in the next XY version...

With XYplorer you're supposed to be able to manually sort items in a list view (drag up/down the list).
According to the help file, it's supposed to be under the Tools menu ("Manual Sort") but I dont see it here
(FTR I'm still with 9.4.xxx)

FYI, the new name will be an alternative, not a replacement. XYplorer will not stop to exist (and being developed). Other than the name, both products will be 100% identical, they will even have the same icon and the same short name ("XY"). It's really just the name, a purely cosmetic and superficial difference. And there is only one reason for it: I got bored with the reaction to "XYplorer" -- 90% find the name totally idiotic, difficult/unclear to pronounce, difficult/unclear to spell. :)

Don (XY dev)

PS: Those of you who find FlexyFiles idiotic: You don't need to tell me. There is no way to please all, and I won't revise the decision anyway. ;)

62
XYplorer has something similar built in:
http://www.xyplorer.....htm#openrecentfiles

63
Otherwise, freecommander will let you Rename/Add/Delete/Quickview files within ZIP archives.
And extract as well, I suppose?

64
Hmm, this ZIP demand seems to get stronger recently. Can you point me to a free file manager that supports it? I have a couple of questions concerning the functionality and seeing the feature at work would easily answer all of them.

... I think that this is an important issue and this is where .ion files stupidly simple and primitive functionality goes over the database kind of stuff.
Yes, I have to agree. Do you happen to have a description of the ION file format? (I briefly searched but did not find anything useful.) I want to try whether I can export XY's tag data to ION files.

I have started using NDN as my secondary file commander(with dos interface), it has great descript.ion support editing and viewing.  I love XYPlorer but I hate the fact that I can not use anything else to see my notes and tags, also it does not save them automatically so it is prone to loosing them in case of a crash which happened to me in the past.  Also the other problem with contained database files is that it makes it very hard share thsoe files across VPNS,and networks which makes it hard to use it in a team environment, plus extra licencing fees just to see the tags.

Anyways XYplorer is a great application by and within itself just that it does not support more accepted file description formats. Thus NDN is a good free choice and works on all platforms if you choose .ion format

Funny that you post this now because today XYplorer (BETA) got a new Tag search algorithm that boosts the search speed to that known only of indexed searches. You can search the whole computer for certain Tags or Comments and get results almost instantaneously.

Can you do that with descript.ion? ;)

[...] tags directly to filenames  [...] ok, this can also be done in a one-click fashion using XYplorer's scripting. Like you could set up 20 Catalog items which on a click do whatever you want to the current file name. All imaginable logic and rename artistry is supported.  [...]  Very soon you will also get customizable toolbar buttons  [...]

Neat! Though by the time I read this I had already done a small standalone AHK tag toolbar that works ok for my purposes. It gets the selected files path from the active explorer/xyplorer/etc window through ctrl+c and then operates on the filenames. (If there's great demand for it -- unlikely! -- then I'll clean up the code later and post it. Drawback: I've found no easy way to re-select multiple files in Explorer programmatically from an AHK script after renaming.) Anyway, I will keep checking XYplorer's development on this front. Customizable toolbar buttons that allow the user to run almost anything is great for many other uses also I suspect. I still like the XY's thumbnail mode a lot so I might use it for that alone with my script - I'll testdrive some more and we'll see. Thanks for all the helpful feedback!
Update: the next XYplorer (8.70) will support searching files by tags and comments, with full support of wildcards, Boolean operators and reg exp.

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 9
« on: October 13, 2009, 05:16 AM »
Dopus comes with "multi-level undo". I assume that refers to the size of the undo stack. Does anybody happen to know how many levels there are?

10 according to the Output Window and the DOpus.chm help file.

I can't see anything in the prefs to change the number of levels.

Considering the fluid nature of files and directories maybe it's not worth implementing more than that since you can undo a multiple file/dir action with a single undo.
Thanks.

I could see a use for more levels. If I rename 20 files here (one after the other, not mass rename) and later 20 files there, it might come to my mind that the first 20 files should not have been renamed the way I did it.

It was on my list anyway, so when I saw this thread I just added it: XYplorer 8.50 will have Manual Sorting (in all views, even in Details view!).

(A BETA version is already available now for registered users.)

Yes, true. But, just to make sure, this is not a hidden trap but spelled out clearly on the web page describing the Home Edition.

I'm sorry, Don. Your web page is where I got the information I posted. I didn't mean to make it sound like you were being sneaky, but rather I wanted to re-iterate your policy to circumvent someone from blindly clicking on the Buy Now link and possibly claiming foul later. There are all kinds of people in the world...and most either hate to read or can't read. :)

Your policy is clearly stated & could not have been put forth more plainly. I was just trying to save you some "But...but....it only says that in one place. How was I expected to see it?" drama later.
Ok then.

For people who might be on the fence about XYplorer due to price, there's a new option - a lifetime "Home license" for $15.  According to http://www.xyplorer.com/homeedition.php:

The only caveat I'd like to point out to people thinking about buying this is that there is no upgrade path from the home edition to the pro edition. If you decide later you wish to have the pro features you'll have to pay full price to get them.

I think it would be worth considering some way to zoom into a selected area of an image (with the MDBU setting at 'Fit to window')...
You mean > 100% zoom? Checking out pixels? A bit tricky to wheel the mouse while one button is held down... If you have a good idea for the handling let me know.

With the mouse wheel [+Control key] I was thinking of the way FF zooms - in increments related to the wheel clicks (so no, I wasnt thinking of 100%). I find that an easy way of zooming a webpage anyway.
With an image - it would be ideal if it zoomed keeping the point where the arrow is as centre of the image, that way you would have a selective zoom.

FastStone viewer uses Ctrl+drag mouse to select an area - this area will then be zoomed to size of window.

Acrobat and other graphics programmes use a more complicated system:
Control+Spacebar+drag mouse -> selected area is again zoomed to window size.
Control+Spacebar+click mouse -> will zoom image in increments (for each click).
Add Alt:
Control+Alt+Spacebar+click mouse -> will reduce image in increments.

[edit in square brackets]

Not sure now if it is possible but I made a note for v8.40.
