Isn't it prudent for a commerical software developer to bring changes that the users (the majority of them) want and not what he/she wants in the product?
I don't think so. A (good) software is not a collection of features whose presence is determined by their popularity. Such a crowd pleasing development strategy would likely result in a corrupt product that won't satisfy most users (although it might sell well for a while because it boasts all the buzz features).

Or have I forgotten anything, mwang?
I don't remember the specifics anymore, sorry. I removed XY when the trial period expired, and I'm not sure if I could try again. (It's my impression that trying to test drive a shareware program for a second time usually doesn't work.)
You mean technically or psychologically? Technically you don't need to worry with XYplorer: it does not use the registry, so there's no trace of it on your computer, so you can try it again without any problem.

... "no unicode in address bar" ...
If you want to address the issues someday, I'm happy to help debugging.
Yes, that's what I said: no unicode in address bar or any other editable controls.
I will tackle this sooner or later, so thanks for your offer of debugging help.

No, it's not the dual-pane thing everyone talks about. It's the lack of unicode support.
Yes, it is lacking indeed. But not totally. Just to make sure what part of unicode support is lacking, let me point out that files/folders with e.g. Chinese characters are displayed correctly, can be moved, copied, deleted, and batch-renamed. You can preview them, time-stamp them, and so on ... I can put it shorter: it's only one thing that you currently cannot do with unicode-named files: you cannot type/edit their names, simply because I still don't have a unicode-capable edit box. This means you cannot type such file/folder names into the Address Bar, and you cannot rename them by typing a new name into the Rename box. That's all.

Or have I forgotten anything, mwang?

XY Explorer might just be the king of the hill if Donald would not be too proud (because somebody else invented it ??) to implement a dual pane mode. I cannot imagine working without the great overview over files one gets with dual panes - despite all the other enticing developments seen with XY explorer.

XY is single-pane, and multi-instance! Just open two (three, four, ...) of them and you have all the enticing developments twice. I'm half-joking because I know you die-hard dual-paners and your fixation all too well... No, I'm not too proud to steal. It's just that I don't dig dual pane. And when I see the growing numbers of people that are happy, very happy, with XY, I know I'm not the only one. :)

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: MP3 player with copy/move feature
« on: November 02, 2007, 02:12 PM »
Here's how that could be done with XYplorer:
You open 2 tabs, one with the initial folder and one with the folder where you'd like to move the songs. Then, open the preview tab and when you select one, it starts playing. If you'd like to have that on the other directory, drag and drop it to the other tab.

I bet there should bet some program out there that'd do this in less steps.
Much easier with XYplorer 6.50 (soon out): define a UDC (user-defined command) that moves selected files to your target folder, and assign a keyboard shortcut to it. If you know how to do it this one-time step takes you maybe 15 seconds. Then start your pre-listening session and hit your keyboard shortcut whenever you want to move a file. Tap, tap, tap, ... done. :)

I ask again about XYPlorer, is there any way to make it intercept explorer calls (I.E., start - run commands, shell commands to open a folder, etc)? If not, then its useless to me.
It can be done, but since XYplorer strictly follows a hands-off-registry philosophy I will not add it as a one-click button.

Here's the way:

It seems to be reduced every now & again so ...
Actually it (XYplorer) has been (kind of) reduced today! The newly introduced "Standard License" is 5 US bucks cheaper than the "Lifetime License" was yesterday! Okay, it's not Lifetime but at 24.95 US$ it buys you the full version of one of the top file managers, including free upgrades for a full major version cycle (this includes about 200 BETA releases, if the pace continues as it went the last years). And when you look at XY's roadmap for the coming months, you'll see that 24.95 US$ will get you a good fat piece of evolution. :P

for the record
8am Greenwich Mean Time  :D

XYPlorer "lifetime liscence" cost me the huge sum of €21 including taxes
(bought in US$ =  $29.50)

that's supposed to finish on the 10th...
I'm working on it... another 3 hours roughly... :D

If the preview thumbnail feature is one the Trial Limitations, then this is "unlucky" (to put it mildly)...
Ah, just to make this clear: XY's Trial Limitations are only:
- a nag screen at startup
- a red message printed in a corner of every image preview

That's it! All features work 100% and identical to the paid version.

Funny, Curt. That one doesn't work for me. I use the F12 key to toggle between the info panel and a full screen length file list. I almost always have Preview tab on the Info panel selected, wonder if this has anything to do with it? Anyway, can't reproduce that one, but it sounds sweet!
The feature curt mentioned (which i think is the one which originates the double-click problem curt mentioned in a previous post) is only available in thumbnail view, you probably use the details or the details + thumbnail view ;)
The feature is called MouseDownBlowUp (MDBU), and you should have it in (1) Thumbnails, (2) Details with Thumbnails, (3) and on the Preview tab.

I guess what would be missing without dualpane would be some type of synchronisation?

EDIT
Look at the fact that his implementation of tabs...
as easy to use as a dual pane manager - easier in some respects. You can have two (or more) tabs open and drag a file or folder from one tab onto another and the file will be moved there, or you can select a file and bring up the context menu and select "move/copy/send to" - and then select the open tab or a folder from a list to send it to. Nice. Simple.

well, thats reassuring to hear -
would still miss some form of compare contents or basic synch possibilities
A basic one-way synch is already there under the label "Backup (To...)". Check the help file...

BTW: In the recent BETA version this Backup functionality also preserves all three file/folders dates after the copying the files/folders.

If the preview thumbnail feature is one the Trial Limitations, then this is "unlucky" (to put it mildly), because preview thumbnails is a very important reason for me   if I am to purchase XYplorer at all - so important that I simply won't buy it if I cannot first check out the feature...

But maybe "you" purchased XYplorer and can show some screenshots of the preview thumbnails in action?  :tellme: Please!
Hi, I did not purchase it but I wrote it. :)

Thumbnails is a "View" (just like in Explorer), so to see them just must select one of the thumbnails views (XYplorer has 4 of them). This can be done either via the right-click menu of the file list, or via the main menu View / Current Tab / Views (it's under "Current Tab" because the Views is stored tab-wise), or via the toolbar button "Views". There's also a toolbar button "Toggle Thumbnails" which gives you a fast one-click access to seeing thumbnails. You can as well map a keyboard shortcut to any (or all) of the thumbnail views to have it even faster...

yup,
post a link!
nice looking webbsite/ilustrations by the way  :)
Thanks, it's very old.

Here you go:

For the psychedelic effects press keys F3, 2, G (in any order)*, then move cursor over the Loupe near to the loupe borders and relax... :) Here's screenshot (as a warning ;)): http://www.xbeat.net...kalin-screenshot.png

* This is just one combination... there's a lot to discover... but I won't help you finding it ;)

I searched for "meskalin software" and the first link I found was this: http://www.xbeat.net/meskalin/
Yep, that's it. Sorry about stirring up this excitement about Meskalin. I was not aware that posts here are read that carefully.
Meskalin is nothing but a little screen loupe I wrote for myself but never published. I use it all the time to check color values and other graphic details. It also has some interesting recursive functions that generate near-chaotic psychedelic effects -- hence the name. If there's interest I can post a download link (freeware, but no support, no help file!...).

I'm always happy to learn about keyboard shortcuts.
Well, then here's your next lesson: goto http://www.xyplorer.com/support.htm and download the XYplorer Cheat Sheets!  ;)

I do know of a sure fool-proof way to make it crash though...
Can't reproduce. I'm using thumbnails on huge folders with small image files since years without any crash. Maybe one of your tile files makes trouble? You can send them to me in a zip (if that's okay).

Donald (XY's author)

Absolutely, I'll send them to you when I get back from my vacation. I should clarify though, this problem only happens if the images are GIF's. I have never encountered the problem with jpeg's and png's. Really appreciate you looking into such a insignificant problem, I don't think many other developers would have taken the time :)
My intuition was correct (but you could not find it as easily as I can from here): It is *one* pic that is truncated and throws XYplorer out of the tracks: wp_floral_931.gif

I did not fix the image but I fixed the crash. The next version will just display "Bad Image" and go on working.

Thanks for spotting this!

Don

A crash is not insignificant to me. Hey, I'm a developer with an attitude! ;)

ah yes a redirect, I'll test if this works here too. Sometimes the simplest solution is overlooked :) edit: Indeed it seems the UrlDownloadToFile function of AutoHotkey supports redirection perfectly.
Thanks for testing!

I think all I need for this Autohotkey script is something like this:

<?php
header("Location: download/xyplorer_5.80_beta.zip");
?>

I have always wondered why more software authors don't make their latest release version availalbe via a fixed url, for example: http://softwareautho.../download/latest.php (which would return not a HTML page but the installation package with the right mime type)
Good idea. Give me a little hint about the necessary php code and I do it. :)
