On November 24, 2008, XYplorer 7.80 (Standard License) is offered at $14.68 (less than half the normal price!) for one day at Bits du Jour.

... XYplorer would be my file manager if it had true unicode support (it does now) when I was hunting for an Explorer replacement. Now as I'm planning to move to Linux, I'm not paying for anything that works only on Windows, unless I absolutely can't live without it. As a result, I'm stuck with DOpus, for now. (Ah, sounds like I don't like DOpus. Actually I do, despite many small complaints.)
XYplorer works on ubuntu I've been told by users. Ask for details in XY's user forum.

« on: August 06, 2008, 02:18 PM »
i right click and use 'open with'
...
that doesnt sound very quick cmpm :P :D
but the programme sounds like one very worth having
I wouldnt make it default either, but I really like the suggestion from your second link

Wish list:

    * The ability to invoke this program through a combination of mouse and keyboard shortcut, such as left clicking an image [file] while holding down (shift), and otherwise having another image viewer function as the default viewer for the system. I realize this is unusual but surely it is possible
-
actually that would be nice for lots of different filetypes / programmes!
another option - I know XYPlorer has some sort of open with menu for individual filetypes (that I havent setup yet)
The POM! You are missing one of the best features if you never tried this... check out: http://www.xyplorer....r/index.php?page=pom

DonL

Will there be any layout customization sometime soon? That is one thing I need to have it myself. At the moment your app is very very nice however I hate where preview, find etc are to be honest :( I do not use xyplorer but I would like to in the future :)

There are good reasons for the way it is now. Please attend user forum for further discussion.

Not really, Tom! XYPlorer started out life as a file searcher:

Historically, XYplorer is not a file manager with a search feature, but a search tool with a file manager attached to it. Not for nothing it was called "Tracker" before...

Source: https://www.donation...49.msg87001#msg87001
That's right, and I finally found some time to check out that "Search GT" (ver 2.3). I had done so already once almost a year ago and was utterly disappointed by its slowness compared to XYplorer. So I was curious whether it got any faster with the lastest version -- especially after having read all the nice talk about it here at donationcoder.

Well, there might be a trick I don't know, but on my system Search GT is slow, remarkably slow, compared to XYplorer:

Searching a folder with about 10,000 files spread over 600 sub folders:
Pattern: *.jpg (matches 196 items)
Search GT: 0.5 sec
XYplorer: 0.084 sec (= 6 times faster!)

Pattern: a  (matches 3480 items)
Search GT: 4.7 sec
XYplorer: 0.127 sec (= 37 times faster!!)

So I can cooly say: I'm still waiting for a non-index file searcher that's faster than XYplorer!  8)

EDIT: got to refine my above statement a bit. It turns out that Search GT is indeed very strong when searching whole drives for the first time (i.e. before Windows disk read caching sets in). It mysteriously gets slower when searching only certain folders on a drive. It's also quite slow when the search returns many results. So, when you look for one or few items somewhere on a whole drive, GT is a very good choice (if a basic name/date/size filter with no boolean operators is all you need) -- otherwise take XYplorer.

I find I'm using XYplorer more and more as time goes by.  The dual panes are becoming less of an issue and I have a couple of options there if i really want to see 2 panes.
BTW, the next release will feature the incredible Portable Openwith Menu (POM). Here's a preview: http://www.xyplorer.com/release_7.10.htm

that looks really nice Don :) (& the variable tab width too )

there was some kind of hack (or miniprog?) mentioned here somewhere at some stage - when you'd go to open certain file-extensions you would get the choice of (pre)selected programmes to open it - seemed to work for others but not for me so looking forward to trying your "POM"
You can try it already in the BETA version, it's near-perfect by now. The associations in the POM are not only by extension but by any wildcarded pattern, or even by a specific filename: IOW you can have individual openwith context menus for specific files (!) -- and with unlimited power: POM supports scripting, so there's far more in it than just "open with..." :)

Now assign Ctrl+U to it and you feel real good.

Done!  It just gets better and better!   ;D

One small thing; if I go to Help -> About, XYplorer shows my registration details, including the full plain text of my license key.  Did you intend that, as it's then  possible for someone to sneak a look at my computer behind my back and copy the key?  I'm more used to seeing the key hidden, or at least masked with asterisks.

No problem -- anybody who can memorize a 32-digit key deserves a "free" copy. ;) Or, do me a favor and don't open the About dialog when someone is standing behind your back. :)

Now, seriously, I just recently have seen screenshots of XY's About dialog in the internet -- so I will actually follow your advice! Thanks.

So it works as expected?

Yes!  Full UNC filename+path now copied to clipboard, e.g

\\gbmnppfs001\groups\technical\Library\Articles\The_European_Ink_Report_March_2008.mht

Many thanks!   :)

I think the for-pay version should have full UNC support, as XYplorer is a good tool for sysadmins, the more so for being portable, and they would really need that.
I think so, too, and added it. Check out the next beta version available in the user forum.

Thanks!   That's great  :D

Okay, just to make sure: You are talking about the command File / To Clipboard / Item Path/Name(s), right? And there should be one more: File / To Clipboard / Item UNCPath/Name(s), which of course only makes any sense when used on mapped drives. That should be easy to add...

Yes!  I just wanted to be able to clip names+full paths to the clipboard to e-mail to other people in a form most likely to work for them, whatever their local drive mappings.

I should confess...  I'm not a registered user of XYplorer (yet), and I wouldn't expect all features to be present in the free version.  But, I think the for-pay version should have full UNC support, as XYplorer is a good tool for sysadmins, the more so for being portable, and they would really need that.

UNC no, the rest yes. Simply hide the columns or drag them to the order you like.

Thanks, DonL!

Suggest you consider UNC for the paid version,  though.
You mean to automatically translate the mapped paths, or to add another column for the UNC versions of the mappings?

I should have been clearer in the first place...  If there has to be a choice, I presume I'd have to plump for the latter.  The scenario is that on the network at work, I need to know what the UNC versions are so I can paste them into e-mails, so recipients can be sure of getting a clickable link to the target file.  That's all, really.

I wouldn't be altogether surprised if there's some seriously FUBAR app out there that take upwards of three weeks to index.  ;)

xyplorer can only search files, not emails or contacts  :(

*waits for Don to step in with a "new beta" announcement*  :P
Not this time. Emails or contacts are not "filish" enough for a "real" file manager. ;) However you can drag+drop emails to XY and then search them.

Interesting, i also can't reproduce andyM's described behaviour. (xp pro sp2 here).

Just tested: this isn't possible in xyplorer.
I wouldn't be too sure about that. Check latest beta version... 8)

... I'm really having a hard time finding this, and I've looked on all my file managers, and they can't do it (DOpus, Total Commander, XYplorer).
That was true yesterday. Today I'll upload (in Beta Club) a version of XYplorer that can do it. :)

XYplorer-free has that nice feature where you can clip a directory listing of files+paths to the clipboard or to a CSV file, but is there a way to make it use UNC paths instead of drive mappings, and to choose only the columns you want, in the order you want, instead of all of them?
UNC no, the rest yes. Simply hide the columns or drag them to the order you like.

Living Room / Re: How do you tag (or even organize) your files?
« on: December 04, 2007, 05:52 AM »
Especially that tags in names can be associated with colors with certain file managers (as noted by nosh here  https://www.donation...69.msg82651#msg82651 ) like Xplorer2, and probably others like XYplorer.

Personally, I'm not crazy about usual databases to store documents. I prefer to just use the NTFS as a big database, using proper names, etc.
Sure, XYplorer can color code file names by name patterns and attributes. And XYplorer does support name-based tagging even a little more: you can define any number of user-defined rename commands, so you can tag your files at a single key stroke/mouse click.

Although there _are_ advantages to using specialized tools.  :)

XYplorer (see attachment in previous post)
FileLocator Pro (see attachment in previous post)
I'm surprised. I thought it impossible to search faster than XY. What kind of search was it? Just for a certain name pattern or any other filters? Did you time the first search or a later search? The timing of the first search over a certain location will only/mainly reflect the read-speed of your harddisk, any non-first search (when the OS has done its caching) will reflect the speed of your search software.

However, there comes a time in some threads where emotion creeps in, and then it's time to just stop.  Your "thanks for the hate review" comment struck me as such a tipping point, with dialog beyond that leading to thinner and thinner ice.  It doesn't matter who is "right" or who started it, it seems to me you've reached the level of diminishing returns on the whole "dual panel" discussion.
Okay, I give you that. The less enlighted part of me just could not resist to "thank for the hate review"... :)

Allow one post to answer all, and allow short answers... :)

>>I think 3 out of 5 stars isn't really a hate review
What is the impulse for a comment that basically says: "The app is okay, but there are a lot of better ones." 3 stars is a bad rating. Less than 3 stars would just have questioned the credibility of the author. I think (this is my opinion) the intention of expressing this "opinion" was either to punish me, or to put some pressure on me to change my mind about DP. I don't say it's not okay to give only 3 stars. Of course it is. I just felt that this particular case was mainly motivated by the frustration about the lack of a particular "feature". I put feature in quotes because DP is a whole different approach to file management, not just a feature. It's not just about adding a 2nd pane. So what Luc is saying is: "This apple has a severe problem: it does not taste like an orange."

>>But if you - some day - think that DP really would improve the XYperience ...
Of course! I would implement it on the same day. Or start implementing it, because it would take 1 or 2 weeks probably.

>>First your are implicitely describing a dual pane mode in a file manager as "buzz feature"
No. Read again. My post where I talked about buzz features was a general reply to the question of sri, whether an author should add a feature if a large number of users want it. I found this an interesting question and expressed my opinion about it. I did not even think about DP when writing this!

>>So why pursue this in a public forum?  What are you hoping to accomplish?
I don't, man! Read the thread. It's not me that starts talking about DP, never ever. As I just said, I answered sri's question in a general way (and I would like to discuss it further because it is a very good question!).
In my forum I have published a "roadmap" of XYplorer future developement, and you'll see DP is there! Whoops? Am I finally turning corrupt? Am I getting soft? No, but I'm getting realistic (which is a common euphemism for getting corrupt, I know... :)). I realized that without dual pane I automatically get lower ratings on many software sites. And this sucks. The other advantage of adding it would be obviously: no more discussions about it!!!

>>XYplorer is his baby
Well, I'm not an isolated mad scientist with a bizarre vision of file management. I have many paying customers and many contributing users in the forum, and they all are pretty happy with XY for a long time. Hey, this app is not just good, it is successful! :)

A dual pane layout is, in my eyes at least, not exactly a buzz feature. ...
Thanks for the hate review at snapfiles. It won't increase the chance for DP in XY, but you probably feel better now. ;)
