GPIB Huh? Do you deal with satellite commo by chance? My job in the army deals with lots of spec any's o-scopes, Scalar Network Analyzers, Signal Sweep Gens, etc. Perhaps you could pm me a link to your library.

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Notes Snippet organizer
« on: January 29, 2006, 09:57 PM »
Would anyone be willing to develop a snippet organizer that can contain various things such as html links, text, pictures, etc about various different things that can be assigned a category and searched? Sorta like a note organizer. I find myself finding lots of little hints around the web and I find myself bookmarking them. Well, instead of a bookmarking system, I would like to have the links, or at times the entire article including pictures and video, etc, organized into a single application where I can search for the title of a note or search based on category. I would also like the notes to be displayed in a hierchal tree style view. Anyone know what I am trying to say here?

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Fewer system tray icons?
« on: January 28, 2006, 06:05 PM »
I travel extensively and the screen on my laptop is .....not very big.  I treasure every inch of space and I have tried several programs to control that valuable piece of real estate in the lower right corner.  The one I like best is  JoinTec Tray Organizer 2.4 which can be downloaded here, among other placeshttp://www.soft32.com/download-mirrors-4690-8.html

This link doesnt work, nor do any links anywhere on google

Already using latest firmware, also checked manual. No mention of associating a drive letter with my player. It all makes reference to using the listing under my computer, which is a pain in the butt as I am a very keyboard oriented person and that makes for wasted time in my books.

Again, you misread what I am asking to be done. I know the subst command well. The problem is not gaining quick drive letter access to my mp3 folder, its getting quick access to my ZEN TOUCH DEVICE. I dont need my mp3 folder mapped since its relatively painless to type d:\mp3 in the start - run prompt. Thanks thou :)`

Wont work either :-/ Any ideas on if my idea is do-able?

Well, as some of you know, my name is Josh. I serve in the US Army, Ft. Bragg, NC and am a 25S which is a satellite communications systems operator/maintainer. I also do part time freelance work with ad muncher promoting their software. That is how I came upon this wonderful site. I have a wife, Melissa, and a daughter, Melanie. I very much enjoy lurking at this site as well as hanging out in the irc channel. I have a lot of fun debating with mouser and db90 on various issues. Anyways, thats me, in a nutshell.

Create a shortcut to the player icon (right click on it in MyComputer), rename it to Zen (or anything else you like), copy it to C:\Windows and you can simply type the shortcut name into Start/Run

Wont work, there is no "Create shortcut" link on the right click context menu for any of the zen player icons.

Um....
if I could simply enter X: into the run prompt, it would be SOOOO Much easier

You can... Start>Run
C:

Or am I missing something...

PhilKC

Yes you are :) I want to assign a drive letter to the zen touch so that I can access it like any other drive via start - run

Yes, you can, but I always use start - run to access my drives, and I hate having to scroll up to the my computer listing and then use the mouse to select the zen, if I could simply enter X: into the run prompt, it would be SOOOO Much easier

Can you try playing an audio/video file in safe mode? See if it studders/crackles there?

open up your computer case and remove any bird nests.
I checked already, there are only the usual bats hanging around in the back of my big tower.

Have you installed any codec packs recently? And does this occur only on audio files or audio and video together?

Very simple idea really. Since getting my zen touch 40GB mp3 player, I've found it would probably be FAR MORE convenient to access the device via a drive letter. Would it be possible for someone to create an app that maps the mp3 player as a drive letter? Thanks in advance!

I will discuss this with murray. I am sure he is willing to arrange something for dc.com since it seems Ad Muncher seems to be liked so much here :) By the way, you can still install this and use it for 30 days for free before you buy, so that should give you plenty of time while I work with Murray :)

3244
you've convinced me. i'll install it later today when i'm at home.

Its just a matter of people assuming that freeware programs are always better than their commercial counterparts. Thats the problem with most firefox users, they assume because adblock is free that it is inherently better. This is not always the case. Enjoy ad muncher, if you need any help, let me know :)

Ad Muncher is an actively maintained application. It has many features, including the ability to add your own entries to a my filters list that allows you to filter out unwanted pieces of a web page or annoyances on said page. The program also comes with a default server list that is actively maintained (an average of 4 updates to the list per week) and updated automatically via the program so you dont have to do a thing. The problem with programs like maxthon or ad block for firefox is that they dont come with a default list, requiring you to find one from another user and that the lists are as actively handled as is ad muncher. The ad muncher list is actively scrubbed by Jeff, the list maintainer, to make sure that if something is added to the default list, that it is A. Actually an ad, and not content, and that B. It doesnt break something else on any other page. Also, ad muncher will soon support gzip compressed pages, as well as per site filters (I.E., you can setup a filter that only works on one page, so that damage to another page is prevented). If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know. Also, check out the latest beta release at http://www.admuncher.com/beta.pl This release is almost 4.7 final, as Murray is actively working to get it out the door since 4.6 has been out for a while and list updates are no longer supported on it since 4.7 has been in development.

I am still confused as to why you are connecting the two together, may I ask why exactly you dont just get rid of one of them? Two routers can end up complicating things later on down the road unless you absolutely need them

General Software Discussion / Re: Linux - Freeware or Shareware?
« on: January 01, 2006, 05:31 PM »
Yes, use one of the various livecd distros, as you wont have to worry about dual booting issues that usually arise. And no, I wouldnt recommend running linux off of an NTFS partition. While it can be done, this is more for advanced users since linux NTFS support is very limited at this time. I recommend trying ubuntu or if you plan to reinstall windows, repartition your drive and make a seperate linux partition so you can dual boot that way instead of putting it onto your windows system drive.

I did this $3 hosting about 4 months ago when it first started and have had no catches to my registration, I setup my own DNS servers and pointed it to my current web host. Couldnt have been easier. No catches at all.

General Software Discussion / Re: Linux - Freeware or Shareware?
« on: January 01, 2006, 03:22 PM »
Linux, itself, is freeware. The kernel is what I refer to when I say linux. However, various companies have their own distribution of linux which they charge for, E.G. Redhat's enterprise workstation. However, you can find various free distributions that are free to download/burn to cd (They also sell various cd's that usually come with very basic documentation at the various websites) such as Ubuntu, Suse 10 Pro (best in my opinion), Fedora Core, Gentoo, or slackware. Now, for compatibility. The various distros include a tool, WINE, which is a windows emulation layer that allows you to run various windows programs from within linux (for those that need to do so). This program isnt perfect, so you might not get every piece of software to work. But, there is an open source app for pretty much any application you need (openoffice for office suite, gaim or naim for instant messaging, thunderbird/k-mail for email, firefox or opera or konqueror for internet browsing, etc). I really recommend getting an old PC off of ebay or from someone who is looking to upgrade, and install a couple of different distros, try each out for a month or so, and get the hang of it and choose which one works best for you. Ubuntu and Suse 10 Pro (suse if you're willing to pay) are both very good distributions and provide easy software management solutions that allow easy installation of applications and upgrading patches on the system. Anyways, if you have more questions, let me know.

My local library has been doing something similar to this for years. Somehow, these are security locked to run ONLY the library's internet and book catalog software, though you could download and install temporary things like flash and java plugins which are all gone the next time someone logs in. I always wondered how they did that on W98 machines...
Another library in town has thin-clients hosted on some 'other' os, I think QNX, based on the look of the browser.

That would be called Mandatory profiles where, no matter what changes you make to a user profile, the profile is restored to a default state at relogin. A nice feature that has existed since nt4 days
