Living Room / 'gallows engineering' expression?
« on: December 21, 2013, 01:42 PM »
'gallows engineering' is the nearest I can get to what I can't remember.
There is an expression which encapsulates the phenomenon whereby companies use cheaper engineering designs or procedures in critical applications...
...and they only improve or correct substandard designs after someone dies.
It's something more like 'gallows engineering' or something, but not that.
'coffin engineering' doesn't quite sound like it either.
'necrotic engineering'? Nope, that isn't it.
'necro-engineering'. Catchy, but still not right, or is it?
Does anyone know the expression I'm trying to hint at, please?

Okay, the loopy updates are gone.
Now it is 'politely' asking if I wish to install IE11.
How say ye all?

It also says there is an 'issue' with the sound card (mobo built-in), but I see no problem and it works fine.
Do you suppose that instead of being in error, it was only mistaken?

Oh, and there is a problem showing the problem message, which if I click on it to see what it is, gives an error mssg pop-up reassuring me something is being done to find a fix, and when I try to close out, hangs and offers a 'cancel' option, then finally closes out.
How inspiring. This is absolutely brilliant; it shows true dedication which ordinary run of the mill software programs are only able to emulate poorly if at all.

Right, this is sorta what I do:

" my first recommendation is to turn off the bloody Automatic Update. Manually check for updates later in the month -- after the masses get used as cannon fodder -- when the coast is clear."

Tnx. Just saved me 1 minute per shut-down with loopy update.

My Win7-32bit OS has begun running '1 update' every time I shut down the computer now...over and over and over...
I would like to make it stop somehow.

General Software Discussion / Re: myWOT uninstall

myWOT has a select few elite super users, as per this link, at which the following picture giving stats on 'SuperHero58' was found;
superhero58.jpg

and one rating by one of them counts for something like 100 'normal' ratings.
It's all spelled out in one of the above link.
Either that, or they can rate 100 different places at once.
As per the picture taken from the link, SuperHero58 is one busy scavenger.
And these 'super users' can wipe out 'normal' ratings of contradictory nature.
So yes, it is being 'gamed', no question.

Besides that, myWOT is trying to 'monetize' and get financial sponsors, and the whole thing is becoming 'bought & sold'.

Also, at the above link, the guy complaining and revealing all this, had his website given a negative score.
So he ran a 'test', not to do it, but to prove a point; he posted an offer to pay anyone who could reverse his score ratings, and he got offers from at least two different people who promised that for X-dollars, they would put their multi-bot myWOT memberships to work pumping up super-score positives for his website.

Is my reporting fair enough?
Check the above link; you'll find it all spelled out there in all its glorious detail.
