Living Room / Once-in-a-century Pi Day 03/14/15
« on: March 13, 2015, 09:56 AM »
Saturday 03-14-15 (why does that sound so familiar?) is a very rare and special Pi Day, b/c the date spells out the first 5 digits of Pi.
This won't happen again until 2115.
Celebrate with your fav flavor of pi.
In observance of this special occasion, here is a pi joke;
Father (to his son home from school): What'd ye larn t'day, sonny?
Son: Pi r square!
Father: Fool kid. Pi are not square, pi are round.

^Now that's a new one ... I usually just use one of those large rubber pencil erasers.

Back when we were having an argument ... discussion of alternative methods of contact cleaning  :)
Tnx, your sublinks (and everyone's comments) are hugely informative.
BTW, I've found that an xnlt indicator of whether my RAM is all connecting correctly is to set my disk-burning software to 'verify burn', b/c a 'failure' there is a definite head's-up that the RAM may be generating errors and deserve a full-on memory check.

General Software Discussion / Lazesoft Recovery Suite Home

I just downloaded it here, and was checking out its boot recovery disk creator instructions.
The option to burn a BSOD crash recovery CD says this;
'Please select the Windows version of the target computer'
(followed by a multi-choice window that says this):
'DO NOT specify the Windows version of the target computer'.

Okay, my OS is Win 7 32-bit.
I assume that is the 'target computer'.
So it is telling me to 'choose' Win 7 32-bit, and then 'not to choose' Win 7 32-bit as the OS to burn to CD?

Historical political cartoon.
The headband of the woman says 'Press'.
Today it might say 'Internet'.
I fully appreciate comments about the technical difficulty of rooting out the implanted malware.
This addresses the political side of the same situation.
This historic political cartoon shows that this kind of corruption and shady deals in high places is nothing new, and highlights the efficacy of (then) the Press, and (now) the Internet, to expose it to the light of day.
It also ennobles those exposing ethical wrongdoing as a just and time-honored pursuit, and shows that the miscreants involved do not like being exposed, and fear exposure for good reason.
(gets off soap box)

^I reread and very much appreciate everyone's technical comments, what little I could understand.
Yes, it is very worrisome.

Now that it has been discovered, I should think antivirus software could be written to at least detect it in action, followed by some kind of 'fix', possibly involving a redesigning of the HD firmware?

Living Room / Re: Peer Review and the Scientific Process
« on: February 25, 2015, 06:51 PM »
(see attachment in previous post)
As the human species becomes more enlightened (assuming we don't annihilate ourselves first) I think there will have to come a time when there will be an admission that there are things we cannot know/learn by reflection, analysis or discovery. Though I'm sure the opinion I'm putting forth is in opposition to that of many site members, I believe there are absolute limits to human ability, and that there are phenomena in the universe that are not susceptible to scientific investigation, however advanced our tools become.

We all have faith...maybe not religious faith, but faith nonetheless.

A priest once explained it to me like this:

Faith is believing or trusting in something when you have no proof or when common sense tells you not to.

Then he went on to state that we all buy cans of soup on faith, that we trust that the label is truthful and purchase it without any proof beforehand that what is in the can is what it says on the label. You don't really know for sure what you are going to get. The label could be wrong. It could be a can of corn and not soup...or it could be a different kind of soup than what it says on the label. But you will continue to believe that it is soup in that can and trust in that label until you open it, get your proof and know for sure.

We have faith in the people we love, even when they do something wrong and common sense tells you not to. You are willing to forgive the mistakes of your children and trust again, even when there is no proof that they will not make a mistake again. We trust people that have never hurt us, even though we have been hurt by others. There is no proof that this new person in our lives will not hurt us. There is never any proof they won't...even after knowing them for 50 years and them never hurting us. They could still hurt us tomorrow. But we have faith that they won't. This is part of what makes a marriage work...faith in each other.

Religious people are like that. They have their beliefs that they accept on faith. They trust that they are the truth. It won't be until they get to open their can after their death that they will get their proof of whether there is a god inside, something else, or nothing at all. One way or another they will have their proof that what they have believed all their lives is true or not. And if it's not true, they will never know. Either way, it doesn't matter to them, just like it wouldn't matter to you if someone came along and told you that the soup you bought isn't soup, without any proof that it isn't soup. You'll be content to keep believing the label until you open it and see for yourself. And you'll go on having faith in the people you love.

I am not saying that I agree with the religious about what they believe, but I am willing to admit that I understand how faith works and why it is hard for them to believe otherwise. Nobody has given them a can opener yet, and until then, they don't have their proof and anyone that tells them otherwise without proof themselves is just as looney as you think they are for having the faith they have. And if you hand them anything other than the can opener they need, they will reject it as being the wrong tool for the job.

And if you can't understand what I am trying to say, then try applying the scientific method, with or without peer review, the next time you are shopping for canned goods, before you make your purchase. (I hope you don't starve)
^Very thought-provoking.

^For such impulsive types as Lindsey Stone, or whoever likes the idea, I would suggest wearing a featureless mono-color strap collar around the neck in public, as a cop-out so people can beg off and claim their head was maliciously photoshopped by parties unknown onto the offending body at the neck line. :P

A. Because it will always win on a peel.

To get same-size outcome, you could either photo-reduce the original you're working from first, or if the photocopier will handle it, photo reduce the size of the final copy.
A great book for learning freehand drawing as an augment to this, is 'Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain'.
Some universities even offer extension classes based on the book.
I think there may also be some youtube vids based on the book.
Even with the book alone, you can learn to self-train with such disciplines and techniques as positive & negative space, and turning things upside-down and attempting to remain non-verbal to force your mind into right-brain mode in order to hand-copy them more faithfully.
A pantograph is a great way to go, and can also act as a mental bridge, to help get you over and across into hands-on freehand drawing, if you ever want to try for it.

Atsu Hime
50 episodes.
Based on the true life story of Tenshōin, an influential and extraordinary Japanese princess who lived from 1836 to 1883.

Good site.  I've been watching some Asian movies etc. on YouTube and many emanate from there.
I'm up to Episode 37, which also now includes scenes with Horikita Maki as the Imperial Princess (not to detract from the others, and especially Miyazaki Aoi as Lady Tenshoin), and this historical drama series continues to impress beyond all expectations.

For once, I am minded to comment (cognizant of your software request) on physical paper wall calendars.
A good sized wall calendar with space to write things down has always proven invaluable to me to keep track of things at a glance.
But it only augments what you ask, so I'll limit myself to mere mention of it.
I would also be interested in seeing any other responses to your request.

This is very interesting, and I'm on the old learning curve with it now.
When I went to check up on a program, it tried to log on with Firefox.
How would I set it to log on with Seamonkey instead?

Is there a way to get ProcessExplorer to automatically scan and check every process/program that is running for viruses at least once, or do they all have to be checked manually one at a time?

Living Room / Re: RAM contact spray?
« on: February 14, 2015, 03:59 PM »
OK, nobody is agreeing with electrical contact spray, and it occur to me I don't want a goopy RAM stick slot full of hydrocarbon gook and dust building up.
I usually don't have an internal dust problem, but I'm taking special note of the danger of liquified 'canned air' (difluoroethylene) bricking a hot (thermally or electrically) PSU or other components and really appreciate the head's-up on that plus all the other comments.
If necessary, I agree would agree about how to just hold the canned air nozzle back a few inches and only give it a few quick bursts.
I'd rather not completely remove the RAM sticks b/c there are so many wires in the way and I hate to disturb anything more than necessary, but I'll keep the paper-wipe (and pencil eraser) procedure in mind as it sounds like a great trick.

General Software Discussion / Re: Win7 update loop
« on: February 14, 2015, 03:45 PM »
However, automatic updates are not enabled and there is at least 1 pending update which hasn't been installed, once again suggesting my son wasn't responsible. He wouldn't have any reason to pick just 1 to install.

Hm... same here, is yours KB3021917 from 2/10/15 also?
"KB3021917 from 2/10/15"--> yes. Ran Microsoft FixIt, and it failed again. Switched off updater for now.

How do I shut off Windows 7 update?
It's wasting time installing the same update again on every shutdown.

edit: Found it. Tnx anyway.

quote:
"Thankfully, there's an easy fix for this, here's what you need to do:

1. In Vista and Windows 7, click Start, type Windows Update, and then hit Enter. In XP, head to the Control Panel and seek out Windows Update.

2. Click the Change Settings option at left.

3. Change the setting to Download updates but let me choose whether to install them.

4. Click OK.

That's all there is to it. Windows may still nag you about installing updates, but at least it won't reboot without your permission."
