Living Room / Re: For those with a CrashPlan...
« on: August 23, 2017, 05:11 AM »
Came here to post about this as well. Sad to see CrashPlan stop their consumer service, for my needs they have worked really well. I have an "unlimited" SpiderOak backup running as well, so I will probably just use that when CrashPlan stops working.

They point users to Carbonite, but that looks somewhat too much geared towards people who have no idea what they want and just need their Documents folder saved. Also the Basic tier seems to require you to manually add every video file you wish to backup .

I also have Arq, which I use for small backup sets, it works quite well .

I think it's great that you are trying to make your software available to individual developers and open-source projects .

I saw the announcement about a month ago, and if you do not mind I'll try to explain why I chose not to use your offer.

Much of what I write is (open-source) libraries, which other people hopefully will be able to include in their projects. While I might not mind adding a blurb to the README saying "This project uses so-and-so to provide this-and-that (link)", I do not wish to put advertisement in every single source file, thereby forcing it on my users.

I can see your point about using the advertisement comments as a means to deter large companies from using the free version for their open-source projects, but that also means that they would be less likely to use other peoples open-source projects that did include it. So I would potentially be limiting my user base.

Now I am certain this works great for most people, and if for instance you are developing an application it's great that you are not forcing advertisement into the compiled binary in any way. So thanks for doing this.

General Software Discussion / Re: YNAB moving to a subscription model

Also still using YNAB 4 .. if it stops working at some point I might try if Moneydance does enough for my needs, but it is highly unlikely I will pay a subscription fee for YNAB (I feel like it's an app and not a service).

Anyone tried FlexiPDF Basic as a PDF viewer?

I am using Foxit Reader currently , but it's a bit of a minefield to install, and I would like something without adds.

General Software Discussion / Re: Malwarebytes 3.0 out

FWIW I ran Ninite the other day and it decided I was going to test MalwareBytes 3 :-[.

So far it hasn't crashed, but it does seem to slow down my computer a lot during its automatic scan.
