General Software Discussion / WinPatrol going subscription
« on: March 23, 2015, 10:14 AM »
I don't know if this has been posted already, but I just read in the latest WinPatrol Newsletter:

Ability to purchase a Subscription free licensing ends March 31st.

Because I'm not one to hide from news that some may not like, I'm putting this at the top of the email.

Tell your everyone you know. The ability to purchase subscription free licensing ends March 31st, 2015.

For everyone who purchases a license on or before March 31st, 2015, we will honor your subscription free license entitling you to free updates in perpetuity.

As an existing customer, nothing will change for you!

  • If you purchase a new computer, so what. You have a license
  • If your computer crashes and you replace it. No big deal, you have a license.
  • If you lose your license, write to us. We'll tell you what it is.
  • If you buy a second, third, fourth or fifth computer, great! You're covered.

Why are we doing this?

  • Without the additional revenue from annual renewals we cannot compete with everyone else. That has become apparent.
  • We've brought in a few people to help us update the PLUS data, only to have them leave very quickly to go elsewhere for more money.
  • I don't want to have to outsource to get help with email support! I want them to report to me as my employee. This guarantees you'll continue to get the quality of support you've grown accustomed to and not be subjected sales pitches for other products when you simply want the help you deserve.
  • This is not an act of greed. This is an act to guarantee your lifetime license for WinPatrol and WinPrivacy truly does last your lifetime.

Tell everyone you know.

Use coupon code "lastchance" (no quotes) to get 25% off a license that lasts forever!

Coupon valid through March 31st, 2015.

Indeed .

DC Gamer Club / Re: Far Cry 4 was amazing
« on: March 13, 2015, 01:23 AM »
Looks like it's 40% off on Steam atm, personally I am still going to wait till I can snatch it for €5-10 on a sale like with Far Cry 3.

204
For quickly writing automation tasks like clicking buttons, copy-pasting, etc., you might look into AutoHotkey, which I believe some of the coding snacks on this site are written in (I don't have enough experience with it myself to evaluate it, but the results others get seem quite good). I believe it can be used to create GUI as well.

Edit: Oh, and welcome to the site!

Living Room / Re: False Positives OpEd from WinPatrol
« on: February 27, 2015, 02:08 AM »
His post is pretty spot on. It is ridiculously hard to get through to all the AV vendors to report false positives. It is a shame that the google/microsoft project is only aimed at large companies, who already have the attention of AV companies. A common gateway for reporting false positives would be great, but the odds of all the AV vendors agreeing on that are probably slim.

I don't know what could be done to help small companies and individual developers, perhaps the taggant project could help, or access to more affordable code signing certificates.

They replied there was no way to upgrade to a 4-pack, but they did offer me a special price on three more licenses. Unfortunately that would still make the total price more than double what I could have bought the 4-pack for at the black friday deal if I had gotten that instead (plus upgrading four individual licenses when v7 comes around will cost much more then upgrading a 4-pack).

I guess I was just unlucky buying the wrong thing.

207
Do I understand it correctly that it only works with pro/ultimate and server versions of Windows?

208
There is also a TeamViewer app that lets you control a PC, and Chrome remote desktop, which I haven't tried.

Edit: I didn't read the part about being able to wake up the PC, sorry -- these will only allow remote control of a running machine I think.

Thanks guys, I think you are right, there is no harm in trying to contact them. I have sent them an email explaining the situation.

I should probably have posted a bit more explanation. When I bought v5, I was deciding between the household 4-pack normal license and a single professional license, which were not that far apart in price. I opted for the single professional license to get the extra features.

Now it appears they collapsed the home standard and home professional into a single home product, and if I had opted for the 4-pack normal license, I would now have a 4-pack v6 license, instead of a single one.

I think it is a good idea that they simplified the home licensing, but I feel the extra money I paid for the pro license was wasted.

Looks like it's out:

Update: Looks like I was throwing money out the window buying the v5 Professional edition, which just upgraded to the standard v6 Home edition :(.

General Software Discussion / Re: Removing images when printing?

I think PriPrinter Pro will be willing to give Donationcoder a 30% discount on the Pro, making it a bit better.

Based on some recent correspondence after a Bits special (which was not on the Pro.)

Is anyone pursuing this?

Just for the record, it seems the cut-off date for a free upgrade from v5 to v6 is if you purchased on or after November 17th 2014.

215
Yes, I was considering upgrading from the normal version to pro, but the discount only brought the upgrade price down to roughly the $20 difference there is between the two versions in the first place.

216
Thanks for posting this.

I can't help but wonder if SoftMaker Office 2015 is close enough that buying this will include an upgrade to it.

Thanks all for the input :-*.

I've looked at the browser add-ons, but I think it would be nice if it worked for all print jobs, not just web pages.

I think PriPrinter Pro will be willing to give Donationcoder a 30% discount on the Pro, making it a bit better.

Based on some recent correspondence after a Bits special (which was not on the Pro.)

seems to me the standard version would be fine - unless the "PDF publisher" integrated in the pro version is something special...

Edit, maybe it is - this link gives a better idea of differences:
http://priprinter.com/editions.htm

I think the normal edition could probably do what I was requesting. But with a discount, perhaps things like PDF publishing and reflowing would be nice additions.

General Software Discussion / Removing images when printing?
« on: January 28, 2015, 04:56 AM »
I was printing a few documents today and was thinking it would be nice to be able to remove images and print 2-up to save ink.

I found:
  • GreenCloud, which lets you print multiple pages per page, but does not let you remove graphics.
  • GreenPrint, which lets you remove graphics, but only on whole pages, and does not appear to support 2-up/4-up
  • FinePrint and priPrinter, which look somewhat overkill, and are also more expensive

Any recommendations?

Hoping they are bringing their prices down to a more reasonable level like in the cyber monday deal .

Does FileSearchy need to index file content (how does the content search work) ?

It looks like it. When I launch it, for a minute or so there is a little indicator in the bottom left corner that says "indexing". Then it says "Index: ready."

Thanks

From looking at the webpage, I get the impression it maintains an index of all filenames for quick filename search. I think it may still be doing regular content search.

222
Nice comparison, any chance you could give Archivarius 3000 a spin as well? would love to see how it compares .

Very nice .

I was holding off upgrading as it was too expensive but I went ahead with it after this further discount.

Same here -- to me, this offer made it worth upgrading.

225
Anyone who can comment on how this compares to something like LastPass?
