Best Archive Tool / Re: Review comments from the ALTools Evangelist :)
« on: September 13, 2005, 09:44 AM »
License Type - It's freeware for home users while commercial users have an unlimited trial period, but are asked to purchase a license. It's most certainly NOT adware. None of the ALTools have any adware, no spyware, no junkware, no third party bundled wierdness - nada, zilch, zip smiley I really don't want people to think that ALTools are adware. The info banner in the upper right only mentions ALTools and does not serve ads for any third parties. PLEASE - Would you kindly fix this. I really don't want anyone to get the impression that we're associated with that seedy underside of the Internet...

13. I thought ALZip wasn't spyware, but my firewall alerted me that ALZip is accessing the Internet! What's going on?

Don't worry. That just means that your copy of ALZip is unregistered.

If you look in the upper-right hand corner of ALZip, you'll see a little info banner. ALZip is just getting the latest information. All information is completely blind. i.e. No information is collected about you or anything like that. The small info banner blindly grabs whatever information (info banner) we send it and displays those info banners to whoever is looking. ALZip isn't sending any information; it's just getting some information. You need to register if you want to get rid of the little info banner.
-ALZip Help FAQ

In my book, displaying (and especially downloading, which I find appalling) banner adds in the app if it's unregistered, constitutes adware -- even if the banners advertise for your own products .

Other than that, it seemed like a nice enough tool .

Best Archive Tool / Re: New Review (09/05/05) - Best Archive Tool
« on: September 07, 2005, 03:54 AM »
I think so .. I only ever use the rar.exe command line tool to create archives .

I also use it from scripts to perform backups. It has some handy features, like automatically adding date and time to archive names.

Just a quick note on using UPX as a precompressor -- it is not a reversible operation, and as such would not be lossless compression.

Living Room / Re: how to give out software gifts
« on: July 02, 2005, 12:33 PM »
I guess it depends a bit on the software in question too.

For instance, it would be silly to choose members at random for a very specialized piece of software that would only be valuable to a small group.

I think it should be at your discretion, and with no 'begging' or similar from members. If you know that somebody has a special need for a piece of software, then it would be fair to give it to them. If there are no such special circumstances and you still want to give out a copy, you could pick at random.

I feel quite confident you will make the right choices .

Ok .. let the two girls be sisters then  .

But the problem with this--and it is a problem--is that in order to benefit from this feature, you have to give up some privacy.  As a trade-off to the update checks, the idiots try forcing you to submit usage statistics to them on a regular basis.

That really sucks >:(.

1084
It does come down to what use you have.

The database driven programs are generally bigger and slower to start, but provide far more features for categorizing, labeling and managing a collection of images.

The quick image viewers on the other hand are great for double-clicking on an image, when all you want is to see that image and not load a database with 10,000 images.

Personally, I have been using IrfanView so far, but my digital image collection is getting so big that I will need to switch to something with more categorization support soon. I would still prefer to keep a quick image viewer registered as shell extension though .

I don't know if splitting the review would make sense .. you could also consider giving out an award in each category if there are suitable winners.

1085
I guess there are two types of image viewers .. those that build a thumbnail database and those that don't. Both have their uses .

1086
Here are a couple, dunno if they all fall completely into this category:

Adobe Photoshop Album

EyeBrowse

Photo Filtre

IMGV

Looks very nice indeed .

Two decimals is a good idea, will add that in next version .

Regarding joliet format, is the 64 char limit on the filename alone without path?

1089
v1.03 was supposed to add this, yes. I think mouser forgot to upload the new archive when he updated the snack page :-[.

Here is DropCount v1.04, changes:
  • Locale dependent decimal separator
  • Added some tooltips

1090
DropCount v1.03

Changes:
  • Command line argument support -- you can drag files/folders onto the executable
  • Scanning runs in separate thread

1091
DropCount v1.02

Changes:
  • Show total size in KB/MB/GB
  • Show max path nesting depth
  • Added indication of hidden, system and read-only files/folders
  • Show both max relative and absolute path length/depth
  • Added status indicator (shows current folder while scanning)

1092
DropCount v1.01 is up.

Changes:
  • New icon
  • Thousands separator

Actually I am not so sure it does what was requested, but it might still be useful and/or fun :-[.

1093
I feel much the same way .. although perhaps slightly less gorily .

I think what bugs me the most is how increasingly obtrusively helpful their products attempt to be, while desperately trying to hide the ever increasing complexity.

One example was Clippy, which popped up at the most bizarre times offering help. Personally, if I want help I'll use the help system. I much prefer not to get interrupted every 5 minutes by a cartoon character while working.

Another is the brilliant information dialog:

Cannot delete foobar: It is being used by another person or program.
Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

That's about as useless as it gets .. should I try closing random apps/people until I find the right one?

I think there should be a much larger difference between the Pro and Home edition of Windows XP. Put all the colorfully condescending cartoon crap into Home, and the powerful professional performance back in Pro (hmm .. I should write political speeches ).

I started work on what became C++ in 1979. The initial version was called "C with Classes". The first version of C++ was used internally in AT&T in August 1983. The name "C++" was used late that year. The first commercial implementation was released October 1985 at the same time as the publication of the 1st edition of The C++ Programming Language.

dtrud0h,

I think what language to choose depends a lot on what you are going to be doing with it. No single language is great for everything, all have some places where they excel, and others where you have to struggle with them.

I know that's not much help, but I think you should start by finding out what you are going to program and on what platform(s). If you are going to be coding Windows GUI applications, then Delphi, VB, C#, C++ are probably all good choices.

mouser,

The first edition of The C++ Programming Language was from 1985, so from next year on I'll stop .

Download managers are "evil".

They are offering 40% for software affiliate sales, so they must be overcharging .
