Living Room / George Carlin - I am impressed .
« on: December 22, 2008, 05:24 PM »
Probably some of you know the guy but it was long time since I found someone so hilarious as George Carlin. And, of course, I'd like to share my joy :)

This video is currently the best one for me:

BTW Other worth stand-up comedians:
Pablo Francisco, Dave Chappelle, Carlos Mencia and unquestionable Bill Hicks.

General Software Discussion / UNISON - Outlook alternative.
« on: December 09, 2008, 06:45 AM »
Remembering what Chandler was supposed to be (and how much it failed) I was surprised to read about UNISON.

UNISON is free (ads supported) solution for personal info management. It easily handles: e-mails, contacts, calendars, Instant Messaging and VOIP in one application similar to Outlook. Server and Desktop editions are available both for Windows and Linux systems.

Description
Many times when I was updating my software (or files) I needed an application for quick properties comparison. All of the existing files compare applications offer viewing files content but not some files types properties. So I wrote a tool where the main feature is Total Commander's content plugins usage. I can can easily "take two files" (or only one) and view their properties like: ID3 tags, resolutions or EXE headers. The only effort to take is to find nice plug in and add to application.

Features
  • new - available in many languages (Chinese, Dutch, English, Espanol, Français, German, Norwegian, Polski, Română, Slovak);
  • new - extended pack (with few plugins) is available on WWW page;
  • additional image headers can be added to exported files;
  • exported reports can be opened in associated applications;
  • CSV export attributes (separators and text quoting) can be set;
  • output files names (for Export) can be customized;
  • files' details can be exported into CSV, HTML or Image files (BMP, JPG, PNG);
  • external files (header.html, footer.html) can be imported into generated HTML;
  • external CSS file can be used for better HTML look;
  • info can be copied using Ctrl+C or Shift+C keys;
  • generated info can be exported;
  • thumbnails visible in simple list;
  • automatic info refresh after Options change;
  • configurable default plugins path with "Scan for plugins" feature;
  • visible plugins fields can be specified;
  • possibility to use different configuration files,
  • possibility to specify external comparing applications on separate tab,
  • thumbnails support for various file types (thanks to WLX plugins),
  • view modes: either all details view or differences only,
  • debug mode (view empty) - allows to see plugins' names for which information cannot be extracted;
  • drag'n'drop support for adding new plugins - drop WDX file into proper area and you will get files extensions suggestion (if plugins supports it);

Planned Features
  • external comparers configuration on standalone tab (separate them from plugins);
  • more plugins handling;
  • thumbnails;
  • multiple files mode (more than two) with reports generator;

Usage
Installation
Just unpack archive anywhere but remember that it needs write rights to it's directory.

Using the Application
Files can be dragged into application's form.

Command line parameters are also implemented:
comparer.exe %1
- file %1 will be loaded;
comparer.exe %1 %2
- file %1 will be compared with %2;
comparer.exe -L %1
- application will load %1 file with the list of files to compare (one or two lines only for now);
comparer.exe -c %C %1
- application will load %1 and use %C configuration file;
comparer.exe -c %C %1 %2
- same as above but works with two files;
comparer.exe -c %C -L %1
- application will process %1 list using %C configuration file;
Uninstallation
Just delete it.

Known Issues
FileDesc.wdx seems to crash Comparer completely (I can't find the way to prevent that other than skipping this plugin). Please remember about it while adding WDX files manualy! Other plugins should work correctly now. If you find an error, please, report it.

All known working plugins list here.

WLX plugins are supported for thumbnails generation. Please check some of them (and report working ones) after downloading from:

Circle Dock / Competitor - Orbit
« on: October 17, 2008, 06:56 AM »
Probably this post fits "Living room" better...

Browsing through Internet I found interesting application:

http://www.ecocardio.com.br/orbit/

It works like Circle Dock but have few features not available in CD like plugins, DirectX usage and multi-rings for folders navigation. The thing which makes me wonder is Options dialog. It looks almost the same as CD's. I understand the need for fanciness in many applications but (for god's sake) why implementing it for settings? Why copying such nonsense? Nonstandard controls in such place make usage harder. It's like painting your house together with furniture...

Wayback Machine says Orbit was the 1st one so the question is: Was Orbit an inspiration for CircleDock or it is just coincidence?

Living Room / Game: The Suffering now ads sposored.
« on: September 29, 2008, 03:20 PM »
1. My story...

Very nice horror FPS/TPS game is now available for free. The only payment is watching advertisements inside.

You can download it i.e. here:
http://www.freewaref...g_program_44708.html

I have to say that I am playing that two days and it is really good... Ads are not so bad: just one movie during gameplay. In the most of the cases game is interrupted (can skip by clicking) during new level/chapter load screen but it doesn't take you to Windows. Sometimes you can see it after changing from beast to human.

Oh! The last ad is in the form of window after closing the game. Only this one is annoying because clicking on that loads your default web browser.

After all: even with those cons the game is very nice and worth to try after dark :)

Screenshot Captor / Bug/Suggest: Capturing covered window.
« on: August 27, 2008, 09:59 AM »
Hi.

I've just found a "bug" common to many capturing utilities which exists in Screenshot Captor too.

The problem can be easily observed when you try to capture window which is partially covered by other one. In this case you'll got image with two applications.

badshot.png

I assume that the source of the troubles is using some WinAPI methods (like: GetWindowDC, GetWindowRect) which are very limited for this purpose. It seems that an information about window handle is used only for knowing the boundaries of the area to be cut from the screen. Not the best way for capturing because it requires to place window on top every time you need it.

I think that it could be nice to modify this tool a little bit and give the possibility to capture any window (even hidden) user can imagine.

One of the solutions is using WM_PRINT (and WM_PRINTCLIENT) as described here:
http://www.fengyuan....article/wmprint.html

The second solution is to apply more dirty trick:
http://www.codeproje...MinimizedWindow.aspx

It is dirty but can give additional feature:
user can choose witch application should be captured from the list of available windows (instead of clicking on appropriate one). Even minimized ones can be captured ;)
