You could do much of this with any Chromebook, reading the PDF in the app called Kami. By right-clicking on a selected word you can use a Google search for the definition (or translation).

They are cheap, they give you the fastest browsing speed around, and the keyboard is already built in.

Lenovo demands Microsoft extend Skylake Windows 7 support | Network World

As part of its Windows 10 push, Microsoft declared it will end support for Windows 7 and 8.1 on Skylake processors, on July 17, 2017, three years before the official end of support for Windows 7. This ruffled a few feathers when it was first announced, and now it's drawn the ire of Microsoft's biggest OEM.

(...)

I have to suspect that HP and Dell are also facing the same issue. Now that it's in the open, Microsoft might find it harder to resist, especially if the three OEMs link arms and stand together on this.

There is no reason for Microsoft to end the support early other than to drive Windows 10 adoption. And while enterprises have a high rate of interest in Windows 10, there are still many that are not ready to move for whatever reason, and their hand should not be forced.

General Software Discussion / Re: Picasa to be 'phased out'
« on: March 16, 2016, 03:45 PM »
Another good thing about Picasa:
it wont upload duplicates from e.g. SD card, unless told to do so.

Interesting you mentioned duplicates because that's why I stopped using it many years ago. I noticed that it saved two copies of every image (one that was visible to me, and another somewhere deep in its own directory for its own purposes), and then my online backup software backed up every image twice automatically, which obviously cost me extra bandwidth and storage space. I only spotted that accidentally.

But I miss the easy ability to star photos and get them automatically reduced in size when emailed.

Though it might be repeated on the same day next year.

Thanks for the link. Looks like IDrive is the top recommended service by the editors, but in the comments some beg to disagree...

IDrive Review & Rating | PCMag.com

Editors' Note: As you can see in the comments below, not everyone who uses IDrive has a flawless experience with the service. In fact, many of IDrive's competitors' reviews also have multiple negative comments. We're happy to see that IDrive staff is responsive enough to jump into our comments section to address some of these concerns. We've been testing and rating online backup services, including IDrive, for more than eight years now. In our latest round of testing, we had no significant problems with IDrive's customer service, and features have worked as advertised. And when they haven't, we've noted that, and adjusted the score accordingly, as we do for every product we review.

It is incredible what one can store quite cheaply into Google nowadays

Yes, but how do you back those up, if the unthinkable happens, and due to some malfunction on Google's side they lose all your files?

They are also synced to your machine, right?

Only if you choose to do that, by installing the Windows client. But that would defeat the purpose of trying to use Google Drive instead of your limited hard drive or SSD as the repository for files (as MilesAhead pointed out).

Especially with Chromebooks, which normally only have 16GB SSD drives (some of which is taken up by the OS), the idea is that you keep all your files in the cloud instead. Hence I was wondering how to back that up.

But jity2 is clearly a pro, as his or her setup is very impressive. I'm not sure I'm prepared to pay as much for backing up my Google Drive account, but I'll have to figure out something sooner or later, as I'd hate to lose my stuff on there.

Apologies for taking the discussion off topic.

I did come across this backup option recently for Google data, but it's manual, so not perfect...

Oshyan,

Thanks so much for getting back to me and for the detailed review!

I've decided to take the plunge. BTW, your 75% off link is still working, so doubly thanks for that!

My data needs aren't huge (below 1TB). I've been with Mozy since their early days, but their prices have crept up so ridiculously over the years (without delivering any noticeable improvements on my side, in fact degrading the service options), that I'm being pushed to jump ship. In comparison IDrive seems very reasonable.

The problem is the whole lock-in and switching-cost thing. Once you've got your stuff up there, inertia sets in and they think they can just milk you forever. But at least IDrive allows you to easily get your data back out in one go, so you can move somewhere else.

Hey JavaJones and other iDrive users,

sorry for resurrecting this old thread, but what's your verdict on iDrive now, with the benefit of hindsight? Has it worked out for you?

P.S. Does any of you use the iDrive Wi-Fi device as well by any chance? Is it worth the $89.99, or can that function be emulated with a cheaper alternative?

"Everything" is great for searching file names and file extensions, but it does not search inside files (such as PDF, MS Word etc.), when you're looking for specific content.

Just completed the checkout, but Drive still shows 15gig... does it take a while before the extra gigs are added?

Need to click on "Upgrade storage", that's where it shows the breakdown of the freebies (for some reason it counts it separately as "2016 security check-up bonus").

Yes, it is an incredible situation when customers are forced to take extra measures of protection in order not to accidentally 'buy' a 'free' product they don't want.

Few other situations I can think of where I have to do all this just to not get something.

I guess protecting myself against a virus or malware is what comes to mind...

General Software Discussion / Re: Sync Laptop & Desktop
« on: February 03, 2016, 04:14 PM »
Just one question, can you sync both ways?

Yes, of course, that's the default behaviour. The most up-to-date versions of files get synced across both directions, unless you specifically exclude certain files or force a specific direction (less up-to-date file to overwrite more up-to-date file).

First press "Analyze", then review all the changed files, make your changes, then sync. There is a helpful section that picks up any unusual file changes that require special attention.

P.S. And it's also for situations when you want to force the direction of the sync, i.e. when you want to ignore certain changes for certain files or folders on one machine and overwrite them with older versions from the other machine.

Just to clarify when this might be useful. Image you have the same already synced copy of a database file on the desktop and on a laptop. Then you do a lot of changes on the laptop to that file.

Then you reopen the same database application later on the desktop, to check something without changing anything. However, even that would have modified the file, as lots of database type apps might modify a file when you just open it to look at it.

Some cloud services might pick the desktop version as the latest version and overwrite the laptop version that has the important changes. Allway Sync allows you to review the files and force the sync in the direction in which you want it to happen, not which file was changed last.

Ideally I'd like to add or amend files in their parent folder (either on PC or Laptop) and they update in their parent folder on the other device???

That's the kind of scenario I suggested Allway Sync for. You can choose which files and folders to sync, and in which direction. But it's a manual process, as opposed to the automatic sync with files and folders that are kept in Dropbox.

I've been using Allway Sync for selective syncing of folders and files in various directions between Windows computers and it's been working fine for me. Does offer a degree of control for reviewing files manually that you may want to be careful about syncing.

is that in conjunction with dropbox or some other way?

It's more for one-off or occasional syncing (or backing up). Let's say you have a Windows netbook that you only occasionally take out for trips here and there. Then you can sync your selected folders or drives from the PC to the netbook over the local network, and then sync it back when you return from the trip, and put the netbook away. But if you are using both devices simultaneously all the time, then of course Dropbox would make more sense.

P.S. And it's also for situations when you want to force the direction of the sync, i.e. when you want to ignore certain changes for certain files or folders on one machine and overwrite them with older versions from the other machine.

Hm, I got the same thing happening in my household with two Win7-64bit PCs... Maybe it's a UK network thing, or a particular ISP thing, or MS is downloading Win10 for us in the background? But this week internet access crawled to a halt, especially the upload speed...

Windows 10, Friend or Foe - from WinPatrol

Now, we’ve discovered yet another reason to be unhappy with Windows 10. We were receiving many reports about our products, WinAntiRansom and WinPrivacy, not starting on Windows 10 computers. When we dug into it we discovered that on many Windows 10 computers, the DCOM service was failing to start and when that happened, Windows 10 failed to even attempt to start any of the remaining scheduled services. Or, worse, the remaining services would all timeout without starting making it look as if they were in error. In addition, we have seen evidence recently that this issue is working its way into Windows 8 computers as Microsoft ports code back to the older operating systems. As of yet, we are not seeing much traffic about this issue on Windows 7.

I do hope MS won't 'reverse-innovate' this into Windows 7. It's one thing to mess up your new beta product (or whatever Win10 is), but why propagate this backwards into an earlier product that works???? Moreover, I paid real money for my Win7 retail license, so I don't appreciate MS degrading the product I have already paid for. If they mess up my Win7, that will be my last Windows product I paid for.

It does NOT disable the GWX nagware. To disable the tray icon, you need to apply the registry patch, but note that doing so only hides the icon, it does not remove the nagware itself.

Thanks. That's annoying though.

To add insult to injury, quite often when I boot my Win7 laptop or wake it from sleep or connect a dongle for wireless internet, I'm greeted with the following message:

Screenshot - 15_01_2016 , 10_27_16.png

So the way MS is trying to convince me to upgrade to an OS that's supposed to be better is with an error message? This is what the nagware boils down to me, other than the useless icon in the system tray. Does not really inspire confidence in me about Win10.

P.S. And it's quite ironic that the error message is asking me to check for a solution online, to try to fix the nagware for me, so it can nag me better...

You can block windows 10 and the tray prompts by applying this reg file

Thank you Carol, but how do you do the "applying"? Sorry, I'm not versed in this at all.
