Developer's Corner / Re: Get 40% off The Pragmatic Bookshelf
« on: February 19, 2010, 06:29 AM »
I generally purchase either ebooks alone or bundled with print. And the ebooks are best purchased directly from the publisher. Also, with most computer/software publishers, once you purchase something from them, they give your lots of opportunities to purchase at deep discounts, like this offer.

Developer's Corner / Get 40% off The Pragmatic Bookshelf
« on: February 17, 2010, 08:58 PM »
YES. I benefit directly by this post. But it is a way for me to offer you 40% off your purchase at The Pragmatic Bookshelf, a great publisher for developers.

I already own several titles from them:

I can recommend them all.

They are now having a promotion. If you are not already a member of their website, I can send you an invite code. If you join you get 40% off your first purchase. AND YES, I too get a 40% coupon. (If there are others here on DC that have this offer too, let me know and we can spilt up the requests among us.)

I am looking to purchase:

Here they are...

What about giving them to a programmer that is just starting out. One who is serious about learning of course.

Yes. Anybody who is serious about learning C++. Even somebody who has written Hello World in C++ and has decided that is something they want to learn on their own.

56
I have created an Amazon Wish List with the books.

Almost every one of them is in new condition with some minor exceptions. I bought some of these used, but they are in excellent condition.

If you purchased all of these books new from Amazon, the total price is about $450.00 USD.

It is difficult for me to part with these books. I love my books. But the combination of me moving, loving python more than any other programming language I have ever used, and knowing they will go to good homes, is enough to get me to part with them.

These books are definitely not for you if you are the type that likes "in 24 hours", "in 10 days", or "For Dummies" books.

I am still looking for a way to improve the odds that they go to loving homes. Please contribute your ideas.

thanx,
tinjaw

Sweet find. I expected the usual "I already know all this simple crap" article and instead found an article with lots of great ideas that I can implement right now and solve some existing problems I have nagging me. Thank you very much for pointing us to this article.

58
I meant to list them here last night when I got home from work, but I forgot. I'll try to remember to list them tonight.

I am moving into a new home in about six months so I am starting to determine what I can get away with not moving. I have about 6-8 brand new never-been-opened C++ books. I decided to learn C++ once and for all about a year ago and bought the best I could find and then promptly decided that it wasn't worth my time.

So, I want to find them a good new home. I want them to be used by somebody who will wear out the bindings from use. And I would like your help in coming up with some ideas about how to best find them a home.

What ideas to you have?

General Software Discussion / Re: Mass checksum checker

ExactFinder

I assume you mean ExactFile. That's too bad. I'd be interested to see what the developer says if you sent them your findings. Do you have the time to email them a detailed bug report?

I tried a little searching and found the following: (I have no experience with it at all.)

ExactFile - Make and test MD5, CRC32, SHA1, SFV, md5sum, sha1sum and other hashes, quick and easy.
http://www.exactfile.com/

(emphasis mine)

   * A file integrity verification tool:
o Use it to make sure files copied to CD-ROM are bit-perfect copies,
o Use it to make sure backups copied from one drive to another are just right,
o Use it to make sure files haven’t been changed or damaged over time.
    * Multi-threaded, so your extra CPU cores get used when scanning multiple files and work gets done faster.
    * Happy with Unicode file names, so it doesn’t fail when you’re using it on files named in Japanese, Hebrew, Chinese, or any other language.
    * Supports multiple checksum routines (hashes), like MD5, SHA1, CRC32, RIPEMD and others.
    * Supports recursive directory scanning.
    * Supports Very Big Files — If it’s on your hard drive, ExactFile can handle it.
    * Does everything popular file summer utilities do, like fsum, md5sum, sha1sum, sfv, etc, but better!
    * Compatible with popular file checksum digest formats.
    * For Windows 2000, XP, and Vista.
    * GUI. Easy to use to get checksums for individual files, create checksum digests, and test checksum digests. Does not require the console version or any external DLLs.
    * FREE.

ExactFile is currently under development and in public beta. Download here. Watch the blog for info and updates.

There is also a command line version.

General Software Discussion / Re: Paragon Virtualization Manager 2010

It looks like if you have purchased software from Paragon before (maybe needs to be via Cleverbridge) you will get an email.

Just showed up in my email inbox: special offer for 30% off on this product. That brings it down to $19.99. I made the purchase. I will try to get my first impressions up ASAP.

I purchased Resolver One months ago and am very happy with it. Think of it as Microsoft Excel but with Python for macros instead of VBA. If you are a veteran spreadsheet user that uses spreadsheets often and you would rather learn/use Python instead of VBA, I would say don't hesitate to purchase it.

As for using it to learn Python, not sure it would be good, but it definitely wouldn't be harmful in any way. You would basically be able to start off python by writing short macros. This would teach you to import modules, use functions, and learn the Python native data types. It would not be a good introduction to object oriented programming or such intermediate topics.

General Software Discussion / Paragon Virtualization Manager 2010
« on: February 07, 2010, 11:34 AM »
I just learned about Paragon's Virtualization Manager 2010 Personal the other day. It looks like it could be useful. I would use it on Windows 7 to go between my Win7 on bare iron, my Sun VirtualBox VMs, and my Microsoft Virtual PC images. I don't have VMware Workstation, but it would be nice to be able to convert VMware images I get in the wild to VirtualBox images.

Anybody have any experience with this product?

Developer's Corner / Re: Resources for learning git?
« on: February 07, 2010, 10:58 AM »
Ummmm. Uhhhhh. I... I, uh... :-[ Well....

I think I am going to go with Mercurial instead of git. Primarily because it really does seem to be true that the git community doesn't consider the Windows community to be worthy of git. I enjoy using both Windows and Linux, so I need a tool that works on both.

And, yes, Mercurial being written in Python does give it a +1.

Additionally I do prefer to use GUI tools over command line tools, especially when I am already using a (GUI) IDE to work on the code under SCM.

Developer's Corner / Any Experience with Peep Code Screencasts?

General Software Discussion / Re: on OS updates and breakage
« on: February 07, 2010, 09:55 AM »
I understand what you are saying, but it is kinda comparing apples and oranges. If you want a fairer comparison, compare Windows updates with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Not CentOS. The legit paid for subscription to Red Hat. They test patches and check for incompatibilities and the like. Then it would be a fair comparison. And if you make such a comparison, I am sure you would see that the updates don't break things any more than Windows updates.

As an example, I invite you to check out Quadodo and tell me if a script of that type or something similar would be a welcome addition to DC.

In short, yes. I had no idea about Quadodo and it is something I have needed for quite some time. I would love to learn about other scripts like it. (Although I would prefer that they were in Python  ;) ).

I have begun a (civil) conversation with Wrox's Jim Minatel, Associate Publisher as a comment stream on their site. Wrox has done "The Right Thing" and started to release their ebook titles DRM-Free. I applaud them for doing so, but mention that I think ebooks priced the same as dead tree editions is not good.

Since Wrox is a developer book publisher I felt readers of this section might be interested in adding their comments as Jim has said he will be posting about pricing in the next week.

I have suggested they follow the other publishers in this space and price their ebooks 30% less than dead tree editions.

Living Room / Re: Browser Wars: Why did you choose yours?

I chose Firefox for two reasons. 20% because it is not Microsoft and 80% because of extensions/addons/plugins.

PortableApps.com just released version 1.6 of their platform today and I am thinking about building a fresh new portable drive. I was wondering if anybody knows of a recent speed test out there. I am thinking about getting a super fast (R & W) 16GB thumb drive.
