Developer's Corner / How to maintain a reusable updatable code
« on: July 16, 2008, 03:14 AM »
This is a problem i've been struggling with for years now, and I wonder if any of you found a solution.

I'm trying to maintain a reusable and updatable function library of code. By reusable I mean that I want to use the same code in multiple projects in multiple locations (as any snippets library / function list / custom class?). This part is quite easy. At the moment we share a common onenote workbook that contains a page for each snippet / function / sub (we're talking web development). I'm considering setting up a seperate subversion repository for this so so that you can have it filebased, versionable and local at the same time.

However the way it's implemented is that code is copied into (usually the functions.asp include part of) the project. Then after one of us discovers an error or extends the function I have to update all the other projects with this code by a search and replace and I have no way to ensure that all instances have been updated. Someone might have made a small change in one of the functions for this specific project.

Hardly an ideal solution and I guess we're looking at some kind of extendable classes system but your thoughts would be appreciated.

Developer's Corner / Apache security quides?
« on: July 15, 2008, 03:08 AM »
Hi I've got a work related favor to ask of you. We've used IIS for years now and are quite confident with it, but now have had to setup a LAMP (debian) based system. The web application is running alright but as it is open to the outside world we'll need to strengthen the security. I'm told it is quite hard to find good guides on this as they all assume more Apache experience than what we have, and knowledge is fragmented.    Do you know of some clear Apache guides to make it more secure? More general linux guides are also welcome.

I've been reading up on Ubuntu's roadmap, read about Windows 7 and looked at Apple's next OS X. They're all so focused on one another, to create a common platform. Some minor new ideas are being developed, but it looks like for the forseeable future computing will stay shockingly the same as it is today. But nearly everyday I am frustrated about something that doesn't work properly, works half the time, or stops working altogether. When are we going to see solutions that plague current systems?

So I was wondering about every day annoyances that could be fixed that would make the computing world a better place.

* On my windows xp system my USB mouse stops being recognised once every few weeks. You'd expect there shouldn't be any problems with supported hardware after 30 years of using a mouse?
* it's impossible to track documents and previous versions when you're collaborating with others using inbuilt tools provided by any OS. You'd think it was important to see a 'communication history' of what you are working on.
* Windows updates nags even on Vista, and it there's no official mechanic to keep software up to date.
* general interface clutter, there's so many distracting options, there's way to many options to make the most of any tool.
* With xbox 360 when you play a game with one click updates get applied and the game is restarted. Why does it take 9 clicks to install a software update (next next next untick untick finish launch etc)

I think you can spend 30 minutes a day fighting with the os.

Intro:
Jungle Disk (from now on JD) is an application that lets you store files and backup data securely to Amazon.com's S3 ™ Storage Service. Unlike other services, with Amazon S3 ™ there is no minimum and no maximum amount of data you can store.  You pay only for the actual amount of storage you are using. It supports 256-AES encryption if desired.

In practice it's possible to access the JD drive as a mapped network drive in explorer, over WebDav or via the local http server (JD Plus). JD keeps a local cache of 1GB by default which allows most operations to be instantaneous with any changes being made transparently in the background. There's an inbuilt backup utility included which works well and previous versions are kept if desired. This approach makes JD suitable for backup purposes as well as temporary file storage or as an remote filesystem as it will work with native copy tools such as robocopy, sync tools such as SyncToy and SFFS etc. Block level incremental backup is supported through JD plus, as well as web access (access anywhere via browser via jungle disk's website)

Version 2 (in development and tested here) includes some excellent refinements, partly based on user feedback, these include but are not limited to (see release notes):
  • New User Interface
  • Support for new Jungle Disk 2.0 buckets as well as Compatibility buckets, which can be shared with other S3 tools
  • Support for connecting to multiple buckets at the same time
  • Support for multiple backup jobs with independent scheduling
  • Expanded bandwidth limiting feature
  • New Previous Versions features
  • Verify MD5 hash on downloads (as well as upload)

Who is this app designed for:

Due to the versatility JD can be used as a autoamated offsite backup solution for you and your family's pc, to access files from multiple locations, and probably other scenarios. It doesn't hide the jargon completely but the interface is easy to use and can be setup without expertise. Therefore JD is designed for casual to expert computer users who are looking for a safe backup solution or to access files remotely without many of the restrictions offered by competing products. For example you'll have the full context menu available on the mapped drive, and it works with regular copy applications and any file managers. You can set it and forget it and let the scheduler backup any changed files over your net connection.

The Good
  • Set it and forget it backup solution. Set it up to run a backup of folders periodically I find I no longer have to worry about harddisk-lifespan or safety of my data.

  • Minimal bandwith use. It will only update changed files (or changes bytes with the JD Plus service in combination with the backup functionality) so bandwidth use is limited after the first backup.

  • Great control without option-hell. Options to keep previous versions, limit upload speed, backup preview, the new restore functionality, detailed logging. You can get dirty if you so desire but I hardly ever needed to access the manual.

  • Works with your applications. As the mapped drive can be used as a filesystem you an use all your regular applications on it. I use OneNote, wikidpad and others to write/ read the data files directly off the drive and this works perfectly. Others have used it successfully as an subversion repository host.

  • Lifetime free upgrades. Noone would buy it if you had to pay monthly to Amazon + for upgrades, but still it's nice.

The needs improvement section
  • Proper help file. At the moment the help function links to an online manual (which i found to be satisfactory), but I miss not having a proper windows help file. I can't search in it. However I can understand with the many versions that this would be a lot harder to update. And it links in well with the program (press F1 to be taken to the right page).

  • Explorer sometimes becomes unresponsive. When using the mapped network drive I found on multiple systems that Windows Explorer sometimes becomes unresponsive. It seems this only happens when I was requesting a folder with large files that weren't cached yet and JD had to download the files to the local cache. However it's easy to avoid this issue by using the local webserver to access the folders, or preferably by using the inbuilt restore functionality. This opens up a screen where you can select which files to restore to what folder. This works fine. It's still annoying to have to do this, however.

  • Control over obsolete files. There is an option to remove files off the backup that are removed from the local filesystem (which i wouldn't recommend), and options to exclude subfolders from being backed up. I'd like to have JD ask to remove backed up folders when I remove them from a backup schedule. Currently I have to manually go into the backups and previous versions folders and remove the now obsolete files. I worry a little that I'm overpaying Amazon for files that I'm not using. Currently I'm paying Amazon $7.70 including taxes to host 31GB and backup 5GB a month (with 50MB restored)

  • Depends on net connection. Inherently to JD is your broadband connection. If you have restricted usage limits then JD might not be an option. However you can set to backup at certain times each night and abort after X hours to stay within certain time limits. There's no option to restrict a maximum backup allowance which could help people in this situation. Upload speed can be limited.
It has to be said I guess I'm always open to do nearly the same for cheaper or free. Amazon seems to offer a great solution cost-wise and JD is at least keeping their eyes open for other storage providers.

Why I think you should use this product
It's one of the best solutions to have files / data available in multiple locations (even portable on a usb stick), and it's one of the best solutions for painless backup. Together it's a pretty good deal. Add in the flexibility provided and I can recommend this. Paying a small monthly fee to have his peace of mind is worth it for me.

How does it compare to similar apps
Jungle Disk does a pretty good job explaining its strengths, but looking at my personal preferences I'll have to break it down to the following:
  • Amazon S3 has more space and reliability than my host.
  • Files are still available as for all processes with full functionality as usual unlike something like Mozy or Xdrive.
  • The backup functionality works as well with less depencies than local backup solutions.

You can still use your sync or backup software with it, I find I don't really need them as the backup interval can be set as low as 5 minutes and as high as weekly.

Conclusions
JD is a very flexible, powerful and reliable data storage solution which can be used for many purposes. Apart from small niggles which really can be solved with updates, I have to recommend it except if you object to costs being involved,  because of external restrictions on your connection, or because you don't need this tool. Solutions that do half the job for less might be available but I've not been tempted. Jungle Disk is pretty amazing and makes live easier for me and my family.

Living Room / good time to buy graphics card?
« on: June 11, 2008, 03:29 AM »
I'm looking to buy a mainstream graphics card, currently looking at a geforce 9600 GT but later this month both Nvidia and Ati will introduce new cards. Is anyone here that follows the market and can tell me how that will impact on the price of these midrange cards? I don't know enough about it and have not been following this sector much. Cheers :)

For example I'd want to wait out if prices would drop by 20% or more. :)

Not sure if this has been discussed before..
Now that Farr2 has quite a few plugins and aliases and so many customizations it can take a while to set up a fresh installation to the way you want. It would be great if there was an official FARR Complete which included FARR + all stable plugins and chosen user aliases. This would add a lot of functionality out of the box and could maybe be periodically maintained. A bit like a point release of a linux distro, you can check for newer versions of plugins yourself or wait until a slightly more tested farr complete becomes available.

This would add quite a lot of work in discussing which plugins /aliases should be included and some time testing the bundle as well as writing up some documentation. So that might not be possible but I think the convenience of having a bundle would be something that might position FARR as a viable choice for more people.

Alternatively a central list could be created with known aliases / plugins as AFAIK finding all options currently requires us to search the farr forum?
Waddaya think?

Living Room / Dropclock - 137MB screensaver

I think this is a case of love / hate. What to do with 137MB? install 5 copies of windows 95? or a signle screensaver (it IS very nice) and pay $15 to register it:

Dropclock is an aesthetically intriguing motion clock screensaver. Every minute of real time is numerically expressed with heavy helvetica dropping into water in super slow-motion.

Living Room / Spokeo - new stalking social networking site?
« on: March 24, 2008, 06:18 AM »
I received the following concerning email today from Spokeo, a site that collects user information from many social websites including picasa, flickr, myspace etc and uses this data to reconstruct friends so you can stay up to date with what they're doing. They stress they only use public available information, i.e. information you can find if you know all the user accounts from certain people and visited the websites individually. However the organisation and collection of this data is automatic and there does not seem to be a way to prevent this from happening. I got the following email (I had never heard of spokeo before this):

As a courtesy, we are notifying you that Spokeo users have found the following accounts for you:

The thing is that many of these accounts have different usernames and personal information, the only way that I can see that hey are connected is via e-mail address. I have not looked into finding other people but if this information is available to them then it makes it extremely easy to hack someone's online life if you somehow retrieve a password to one of these sites (security breach or easy guess). Spokeo also  encourages you (although you don't have to) to register using your gmail / aim / yahoo login details, meaning that your google checkout information could now be linked in to all this.

To retrieve this information manually would require a very determined person to work for at least a couple of hours.. Do you manage your privacy settings on all the services you have ever tried out? Picasa for example implemented privacy options at a later stage - so it's likely that some information can be found. Thanks to spokeo I have now deleted accounts on many of the services it found.

Find your friends. Track your friends. But it's not opt-in, there is not even an opt-out. The meta gathering process in my opinion requires additional privacy controls. Is this allowed by Law?

Am I the only one that finds this very worrying. As far as I can see in the hands of the wrong people this could cause major problems. I'm waiting on a response from spokeo.

Post New Requests Here / app that removes button from dialogue box?
« on: February 11, 2008, 08:24 AM »
Wondering if anyone knows or can create a quick app that removes the RUN button from the run/save box that pops up on a download in Internet Explorer. I want to disable or remove the run button on a computer as SetSafer makes sure programs can't be run from IE.

I found programs to enable a disabled button, and programs that automatically click a certain button.

Find And Run Robot / [vista bug] myalias files not available
« on: February 11, 2008, 04:25 AM »
Under vista, in the preferences under the alias tab, the myalias file is not available from the dropdown. Therefore by default it's not possible to add / edit any aliases. Also the farr preferences and aliases are located under C:\Users\<username>\Documents\DonationCoder\FindAndRunRobot\AliasGroups. Yes under "my documents". Not sure if this is on purpose but different from XP.

Post New Requests Here / DONE: MiniMe (aka MaxiMe)
« on: February 01, 2008, 05:09 AM »
I needed this quickly so whipped up this AHK script to quickly minimize or maximize windows using right shift and control. I got really frustrated with the fact there is no windows shortcut to minimize the active window. If you're like me and have many window open then consider using minimIZE to minimize windows to a small desktop thumbnail (and out of your taskbar). In combination with that, this script can make windows management a lot less painlessful.

MiniMe - latest version 4 - February 1,  2008
minimize the current window when pressing right shift twice quickly. maximize the current window when pressing right control twice quickly

Find And Run Robot / Suggestion: arrow keys to scroll result list
« on: February 01, 2008, 04:47 AM »
To make farr more usable: I would like to be able to use the keyboard up and down arrow (and pagedown / pageup) to scroll through the hidden results when i query FARR and more results are shown then fit in the normal results list. That way I can quickly discover results that I didn't know about instead of relying on searching for them (which means I know about them). This would be a lot more elegant too than adding +sall to the query.

images.jpgHello we used to work with Deep Paint 2, which was released as freeware by Right Hemisphere. However without communication on the issue both download.com and RH have removed the link. Any freeware site either doesn't have the program or links to these two sites.
Which leads to the following question:

Would there be a demand for a service based on Amazon S3 which would host freeware versions of apps so that they would be available for ever without breaking the licensing terms?

But additionaly I'm looking for a replacement software for natural media. I know coral painter is the main app, and there's Artrage, I'm not going to use it with a tablet and would like the interface to be easyier rather than powerful - and Paint.net or photoshop is not what I'm looking for ;-) Would be good if it was free but not essential.

Post New Requests Here / [idea] Online playlist conversion
« on: January 31, 2008, 09:01 AM »
I'd like someone to write a small website tool, to convert .PLS files to ASX / WAX / M3U.. You'd just have one form where you'd enter the url to one of these playlists, and press CONVERT, and a serverside script would get the url and package it in the other formats. That way windows media player can open PLS files and it would probably be popular.

Find And Run Robot / BUG: Can't launch results that end in space
« on: January 24, 2008, 06:16 AM »
I'm sure this came up before, but FARR is unable to launch Windows Live Messenger. It runs the shortcut in my start menu, but when I run it with farr (it does come up in the results), nothing happens. Whether I have "always launch shortcuts directly instead of resolving links" selected (current) or not does not have any effect. Ah I see by default WLM shortcut has a space as the last character: "Windows Live Messenger ". When I remove that, FARR launches it.

I'm sure it did come up, but it's not in the official bugslist, and windows live messenger is quite a popular program.

General Software Discussion / Money saving budgeting options
« on: January 24, 2008, 03:32 AM »
Money-Print-C10055084.jpgAm looking to save some money and first aim is to get a view on my spending via a budget. Now I know some websites / excel sheets / software exists but what are your experiences with them?

An idea I had is to compare my relative spending with people with a similar income / geography and see where I relatively overspent: for example if my heating bill is twice as high similar people like myself - clearly there's something wrong and I should think of home insulation. Not sure if this exists though.

Related threads I found:

Also good ideas on how to save money are appreciated ;)

Developer's Corner / WorkButler
« on: January 14, 2008, 06:30 AM »
I have an idea for a todo list tool that can help you deciding what you should be working on. I'm not sure at this point if it will be worth my lunch hours to work on it - but the idea is worth developing, it might convince me or someone else to do it:

It's goal will be to have a simple interface: a list of tasks in suggested to-do order.
You can "skip" or "finish" the current task. Use skip if you worked on it but its not finished yet - I hate having to tell my todo list what I'm working on I can never keep that going.
You can enter a new task at the bottom or top of the list.
It will be influenced by MyLifeOrganised, various Helpdesk ticketing systems, GTD and Evaluweight.
Tasks might need more attention the longer you not looked at it. (auto-escalation - skip them if you dont want to work on them right now).
Every task has a next action field - this should be filled at any time so you can work on it asap. You can 'complete' the action, this does not nessecarily complete the task..
You can double click on the task to bring up the dialogue to add / edit / remove next actions - a simple list in working order.
The program will always be the one that suggests your next task - you choose to skip it or work on it until it's finished!

However, deciding what order the tasks should be in is the essential component. I don't like setting the priority directly because it's always guesswork (what makes something high priority over medium?). So clearly its important to note: deadline.
Perhaps there should be a general Project screen "build portfolio", "move house".

I'm hoping for you guys to discuss how to make the "prioritizing" as organic as possible, and to find out what factors are involved in prioritizing a task. Entering tasks should be as quick as possible, just the task + deadline - the priority will be assigned based on the project and weighted importance compared to the other projects.

I can think of factors such as: amount of tasks per project (bigger projects are more important?), better defined tasks compared to undefined tasks (is defining them more important than doing them?), deadlines obviously, but there must be others.

I've made backups of gigs worth of webdevelopment related files and now I need to search through all of them (they're on several locations on the corporate network). They're in ZIP and RAR format. What's the best way to do this?
  • I was considering setting up a desktop search program on our development server and have it index all. Is there a better way?
http://search archives doesn't really help me. :(
  • Unpacking them all in their own folder is an option but can't say I'd like the prospect of that although then I can use locate.
  • I can convert all .rar files to .zip so windows own search can look through them, that is probably a good idea even if i go with a desktop search.

Coding Snacks / structured plaintextfile based note taker
« on: December 04, 2007, 06:02 AM »
What i'm looking for could already exist, but i'm not sure how to find it.

a notetaker app that opens and structures a series of textfiles in a folder structure. At the moment most people either use software like onenote or evernote to keep all notes together, or plain text files scattered over their system. What I am looking for is to keep the flexibility of plain text (being able to edit/copy/rename/sync the node anywhere), but with some organising features - just some kind of tree structure where every node is an actual plain text file. Not the proprietary or database format used by all notetakers.

Quicknote comes close (http://www.quicknote.de/qscreensen.php), but i just want to use my own textfiles in it, not use quicknote to create them then save them to text files.

I hope I make sense, please tell me if I don't :D
