Thanks, looks pretty good - I might start using that. I'd like to get rid of the *other* confirmation box when it detects a program has crashed though.

But even better than this would be to allow a hotkey to force close the active/crashed window.

You can't set the detection level less than 15 seconds either which seems a bit arbitrary.

I'm often looking for enhancements to improve Windows. Is there any program I can use to over-ride the usual close functionality with something a little....nippier?

You may notice when you quit a crashed program with the standard close button, it still takes a while to close. Using the task manager on the other hand is usually a much faster experience. Yes, I know it's supposed to be 'dangerous', but I'm prepared to experiment with the feature, and if I run into any problems I can always fall back to the old, slow way of exiting a crashed app. Perhaps the program I'm looking for could detect if it's crashed and end it quicker than Windows usually would. Or maybe a side-feature will allow you to close it normally by clicking Ctrl and the close button.

On a related note, a browser I used to use called Opera took *so* long to close, that I always ended up quitting it with the task manager just to save time and prevent the HD from thrashing. I never suffered any ill effects as a result.

V1.10 just released - A big fix which prevents crashes and unexpected colour changes for anyone here who experienced that.

This'll probably be my last update in this thread for a while - I'd love to hear some more feedback/criticism.

Just released v1.03 which since v1.0, fixes saving of the settings on reboot, along with being able to set any colour including darker shades.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!

Most of you reading a forum dedicated to software (such as this one) will probably have heard about F.lux, and how it 'warms' the screen so you can sleep better at night, or at least have a screen which doesn't glare as much.

Cue SunsetScreen which is like F.lux but improved. In fact SunsetScreen is the only app of its type to allow you to precisely change the hue, saturation and brightness to allow you to match the screen's colour to the indoor lighting. This makes the screen look more appropriate whilst still encouraging the production of melatonin for a good night's sleep.

But perhaps a bigger advantage of SunsetScreen over any other program is the ability to set the sunset and sunrise times to match your sleep pattern, and not the whim of the seasons. For example, in winter, we only get a short day, and programs like F.lux would have the day colour too late, and the night colour too early. SunsetScreen fixes this so that you get a consistent colour changing cycle, whatever time of year it is.

So if you want to maximize seratonin production during the day, and melatonin at night, download SunsetScreen from here:

http://www.skytopia....nsetscreen/index.htm

(btw, I'm the same guy who created SonicPhoto and OpalCalc. Like those two, I'm the developer of SunsetScreen).

For curiosity's sake, the window I captured was a plain window created by an old C program I created that used SDL for the graphics. No widgets or anything, just a giant graphic inside a 6000x4000 window frame. The render gradually fills the window pixel by pixel over a period of days.

Suffice to say, there's no way the window would fit on a standard 1920x1080 desktop!

57
Just like to thank the author of Screenshot Captor, as it's the only tool I've found so far which captures a window which overlaps the screen's resolution (I needed to grab a 6000x4000 pixel window!). Amazing tool, and something I could have only expected from DonationCoder.

On Superuser.com, the bounty-winning answer (awarded by me) used Screenshot Captor as part of the solution: http://superuser.com...rger-than-the-screen

Nice find and thanks! I'll fix that for the next version. Doesn't happen with your own custom functions interestingly.

Like OpalCalc, I am the sole developer of a new program I've been working on hard these past few months called "SonicPhoto" (actually, my brother did help a bit with the graphics this time). In a nutshell, it converts from a picture (photo, drawing, anything) to sound.

It's similar to a program called PhotoSounder, and even though it lacks the in-built graphics editor and sound importer of that program, it has tasty automatic stereo, and a harmony feature which AFAIK is completely novel to this kind of thing.

The main page is found here:
http://www.skytopia..../software/sonicphoto

Unlike OpalCalc, this one's priced at a fixed amount ($40-100). However, if any of you have previously donated to OpalCalc, I would be happy to give the Silver edition (worth $40) away for free as a thankyou for your support.

Here's the demo video:
http://youtu.be/8BGr1u-Oz8M

Despite being version 1.00, I would say it's already very solid and shouldn't crash or have any bugs (famous last words).

Love to hear any comments and/or criticism. You guys are the first to see it!

Hi bob99,

Yes Win calc is treating it as (5 - 4 + 2) ÷ 10 × 2, but I'd rather use the standard mathematical precedence where divide and multiply have higher priority - i.e.: 5 - 4 + (2 ÷ 10 × 2). What do others think?

However, looking at the screenshot gives me cause for other concern. The graphic icons are missing, which would make it hard to navigate. Do you have any information about this? You may have heard about the bug prize giveaway, where I'd be happy to award up to $50 for certain bugs.

Yes Soulver goes more down that route of trying to cater to common English statements. Despite some rare exceptions in OpalCalc (e.g. "5 minus 2" or "10 thousand" to name two), that's a dangerous route to go down, because A: The English language is inconsistent, thus causing nightmare ambiguities of certain cases, and B: Because it'd be very difficult to implement especially whilst keeping everything else consistent. And C: Some words may conflict with special keywords that already exist.

Pay extra attention to how "Multiply" works...  The bottom three items each = 55.  Not sure why/how.

Despite being 'unsupported syntax', that's a tiny bug I guess. That and the other thing is worth an extra $5. Nice one! You're the only one to submit bugs so far. Surely others would like some cash too ;) Glad to avoid an avalanche of bugs so far  :D

Also, how does "total of 2 and 4" yield 49,320, rather than just "24?"

It's basically saying: total multiplied by (24), since "of" means "multiply".

Do be sure to update the GUI elements in OC
Yes, I suppose I should, despite the apx 10 millisecond extra boot time (sigh ;) )

EDIT: Oh yes, and they're mistaken as well. That's sorta a bug. Find another like it to get $5 more ;)

Right, the dropdown menu / auto-completion will have to wait as that would be tricky to implement. Agreed about the speed thing.

As for currencies updating, well they automatically do once the answer is shown. Maybe I misunderstood?

And paste it as text.   Either like this
1+1+1 | 3
or maybe like this
[1+1+1][3]

Aha, that was implemented for 1.50. Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+C (with no text selected). That should the sum and the answer to make 1+1+1 = 3.
Also FYI, Ctrl+C copies the whole sum, and Alt+C copies the answer (again if nothing is selected).

Evil Stevil strikes again!
Haha, that's cruel!  :P Still it nets you an extra $2.50.

Probably not a "bug," but I'm curious why/where/how we get this answer
Yes, I would count that as a bug, since as I said before, it should say "warning, mixed units". It's the same problem why "pound as usd" failed before. Nice find.

Thank you for all the info, and feel free to mention anything else you find (like as if I can stop you ;)

Haha nice try ;)

I thought I'd keep it so that people can see how far it's come, but yeah I should probably change it tbh.

Hey this thing is pretty smart!
Well it would be if the first answer was correct. For actual money, either gbp, or the £ symbol should be used. Having said that, usually the message "<warning: mixed types>" would be appended to the answer, so I'd say you've just found another bug. Have a free copy of OpalCalc on top of the $15!

So Opal Calc has 17,456 different functions and each one has a bug.  So 17,456 times $50....    Hmmm I'm gonna need Opal Calc for this!
I better quickly release a new version so that it returns a negative amount ;)

Seriously, thanks for the bug report. It's new to 1.50 due to one of the features I added. It was pretty careless of me, but my stupidity is your gain - I'm very happy to award $15 for it (more would've been awarded for a long-standing bug btw)! Send me your paypal email address to receive cashings! :)

Needless to say, v1.51 is now out.

v1.50 is online now with a ton of new features/fixes. I've included a prize giveaway for any bugs people find (let's hope I don't go bankrupt ;) )

@oblivion: the "rem" keyword is a 'special corner case' feature which only works with simple divisions (e.g.: "7/3 rem = 2 rem 1"). I added it due to someone really wanting it a while ago. Combining it with dates/times would be quite tricky indeed unfortunately.

Thanks all! I'll be working hard on 1.48 which is due out soon (and fix the currency update issue that's currently in 1.46).

Also been working on a picture to sound program which has been taking up a lot of my free time, but it'll be a lot of fun ('interesting' alternative to that 'photosounder' program if any of you have heard of that).

I have a FARR alias for "calc" pointed at OpalCalc,

Ah thanks! <Hatches evil virus plot to make OpalCalc replace calc on every PC in the world >

OpalCalc 1.43 is now out:
http://www.skytopia....m/software/opalcalc/

For users in this thread, the following features/bugs have been fixed (amongst quite a few others detailed in the history from the URL):

Shift + F1 now opens the last session, even if you didn't save it (providing OpalCalc was previously closed). In addition, an option has been added to automatically restore the last session on startup.

When the print window or "All Q+A" window was opened before, the colour scheme of the main window turned to "Snow". This is now fixed.

Aha, I see you've found one of the 'Easter eggs' in Opalcalc ;)

@kunkel321: For now, I might just make a hotkey recall the last session's document. Is that good enough for now?

so you geniuses should be able to make a 50 line script
What you mean like this? ;)

opalCSV.jpg

Yes it is a real program, but beta with possibly a few minor bugs at the moment, so please don't spread. It's a bit more than 50 lines though, as it's fairly sophisticated for this type of thing ;) No documentation, but it's so very easy to use (output updates in realtime, including changing any options, so a bit like opalcalc). The nice thing is that you can just insert the raw HTML file, and it scans for table data automatically.

http://www.skytopia....f/OpalCSVconvert.exe

Yes, that's it, there's no install, not even a zip, just a standalone executable (does require .NET 4.0 though). I await the day when all software's free of the dreaded installer =)
