General Software Discussion / Gmail Adds New Chats Feature
« on: February 07, 2006, 01:36 AM »
Source:http://mail.google.com/mail/help/chat.html

Just saw this over on digg
http://www.digg.com/...ds_New_Chats_Feature

        Cut and Paste....
    *  Add contacts and invite your friends to chat from Quick Contacts
    * See when your friends are online
    * Set your status to busy, sleepy, angry or whatever. Even sneezy.
    * Get Google Talk to make free voice calls too. It's completely synchronized with Quick Contacts
    * Go off the record when you're chatting so nothing gets saved to anyone's Gmail account

I Barely use either,Google Talk or Gmail (fell in love with fastmail.fm;ftp support is freakin sweet)these days but it's inovative, none the less.

Hmm,just noticed they changed the logo too,Gmail talk "beta"

Along with "widgets" i'm guessing this what a Firefox user would call extensions,Opera will be opening a new
sub-domain,Opera Labs-http://labs.opera.com/-where users can get a behind the scenes look at Opera
technologies.

If you haven't tried Opera i highly recommend it.And give it a real chance.Run it for a month.I installed Opera
while waiting in between Firefox's 1.5 and 1.5.01 releases and though i still have Firefox on my machine and
always will i rarely use it after giving Opera a chance. The first thing you will most likely do is start saying,
this isn't like Firefox,Firefox can do this why can't Opera, after tweaking it a bit you'll most likely get it to do
everything Firefox has done for you and then some. That's not bashing Firefox,it's a great browser, anything
is better than I.E.,cause we all know it's a security flaw waiting to happen...and it kills kittens.Little helpless
defenseless kittens.

Back when Windows 95 was launched software seemed more creative. Two programs i love was Cinemania from
Microsoft and All Music Guide had a cd-rom that had every little tidbit about a music artist, including little video clips,in
pretty decent quality.Cinemania was freakin sweet, very elegant. It had reviews from Roger Ebert,Pauline Kael, and
Leonard Maltin. They stopping making it in 97 i believe and what a shame. If you look at the reviews at amazon
dot come you'll see people moaning about it being discountinued.I've never found reference software that covered
music and movies as well as those Programs.Does anyone out there know of any? It seemed that when the first
cd-rom drives were introduced it sparked more creativity out of people.Microsoft plus pagkages were even better.
You could spend all day poking around that cdrom, remember that Weezer video and that game with the red bumper
car?

Living Room / So anyone buy any video from Google yet ?
« on: January 13, 2006, 10:40 PM »

I bought a Twilight Zone episode (Time Enough at Last) w/Burgess Meredith for $1.99,just to check it out.
Decent quality,at a little under a half hour,about 26 minutes,the video weighs in at 97.8 MB,i'm on dial-up too :o.
So something will have to be pretty special for me to download again. While i like how they let you download the
video, the service requires you too log in with your google account to determine ownership. There is no such thing
as good DRM.I will twiddle my thumbs and wait for the hack ;)

I think it will most likely be a hit, especially in the music video department. That and opportunity for independant
freelancers out to make a buck is a pretty cool ideal. As far as watching a full commercial film release,no thanks,
i'd rather own the dvd.

81
This is an official release from Microsoft.
http://www.microsoft...8&DisplayLang=en

This ISO-9660 CD image file contains all security and critical updates for Windows released on Windows Update on January 10th, 2006.

This is more for the administrators of many computers like the fine print says, but i think this a  cool ideal releasing
stuff on ISO images, and the first time i've seen Microsoft do it.

General Software Discussion / Cnn Pipeline
« on: January 12, 2006, 03:51 PM »
I should of took some screenshot before uninstalling but i forgot :-[
And i sure as hell ain't gonna install that thing again
Here's some screenshots from the actuall page
http://www.cnn.com/pipeline/

First off i have 2gigs of ram and a decent video card ,radeon 9600,and P4 2.8ghz dual thread -yada yada

I installed this beast (install 9.55.mb)and it chugged along somewhere in the neighborhood of a 150 mb
Grant it i have dial-up,and as for slow connection that's my faught. The only application
i've seen chug nearly as much memory is Adobe Photoshop, and google earth, which you
can adjust.

Now the service, Cnn pipeline is decent, and you have the option to view all the features in your
browser,so in short if you ever try this service out opt for the browser as opposed to desktop
application.$2.95 month,$24.95 yr.,or what i opted for to try it out was a 99 cent day pass.
It's commercial free, and if you run URL snooper in the background you can catch the streams

Even though i didn't subscribe to it back in the day,i think the real player collaboration they once had
would have been a better way to view content as opposed to this horrible designed memory chugger.

I really wish i would've taken screenshots dangit,in the about box it mentioned something about
using audible components(audible.com) and the install shield has copyright Macrovision Corporation
which is a little scarry since their name is synonymous with DRM,actually THEY ARE DRM.

Just a heads up

84
I bought IBasic Pro during that holiday discount cause it looked beefy and was dirt cheap and the new years resolution i made to my self that i would create an application this year.

I can wing things like NSIS installer, i used to tap around and make batch files, yeah i know this isn't programming, but
i know there's something there.I see these apps here and at cockos.com and nullsoft, these itty bitty apps and i
know i can create something ,i just need a jump off point.

I'd like to create a download manager,or a very simple email checker and slap my freakin name on it.
Someone help.

He left Microsoft in 1984 because Microsoft had gotten "too big." Microsoft's size at that point? A few hundred employees. (He came back after Microsoft bought the company he worked for). ;D

"opportunity for Outpost users to interact directly with the product’s
developers."-I hope this is true.

Cut and paste...

OUTPOST FIREWALL PRO 3.5 – WHAT’S COMING NEXT?

Good news for Outpost Firewall Pro users! You can expect even better protection
against Internet threats with the new version 3.5, coming in February next
year. This next version will offer greater integration between the firewall and
anti-spyware functionality, tools to boost Outpost’s performance, and an
opportunity for Outpost users to interact directly with the product’s
developers. Here’s more:

Tighter Anti-Spyware and Firewall Integration
Users’ systems will be automatically and proactively scanned for spyware if the
firewall detects any suspicious Internet activity patterns, even if the
real-time spyware protection isn’t running. This will keep protection levels
high and minimize performance impact.

Log Exclusions
Users will be able to define log exclusions for a particular Internet or
network activity such as peer-to-peer sharing or NetBios communication. This
will keep Log Viewer data clear of clutter and may improve computer
performance.

Improved Feedback Loop
The new ImproveNet will enable Agnitum developers to collect and review users’
application Internet access configurations and program usage statistics,
including information that explicitly identifies an application by its
unique parameters, such as checksum and version data. This data in turn
enables the developers to expand the existing database of known
applications and make more automatic access rules available to users.

The new version will also feature distribution and automatic application of new
rules. After a new access rule has been received and ratified by Agnitum, it
will be automatically shared with other Outpost users, obviating the need to
manually create manual for Internet-accessing programs. The principle is the
same as for spyware definitions updates and will increase usability and lead to
fewer prompts.

Pure speculation on my behalf...(and i'm not bashing Firefox)

After bouncing around various mozilla sites...
http://www.mozilla.o...ducts/firefox/start/
http://www.mozillazine.org/

I find 1.07 still being pushed.Yes you can click around 1.5 is not hard to find, but the enthusiasm doesn't
seem to be with 1.5.I check the forum at  mozillazine and their are all sorts of complaints of memory bloat
and compatibility issus with flash and adblock, etc.(Mozilla developers need to rethink it's extension compatibility
as apposed to developers of  extension rewriting their stuff after new releases, imho.I'm waiting on a 1.5.1 i
guess is what i'm saying, any others doing the same?

I've actually cuddled up with Opera's browser during my wait, and after a month of kicking it around it has started
to grow on me.The way it handles bookmarks needs work(lord, how i miss right clicking from the bookmarks dropdown menu in Firefox.
