but it is odd that it's only in DOpus that the open dialogue box appears...

I agree with you on that but as it doesn't touch the file extensions for image etc. it is not responsible for the problem. However, you said that you have used the "settings->file types" dialogue...and it's always possible that you could have misconfigured something there.

What I would have done, if the utility I posted doesn't help you:

1. In Dopus, open the "settings->file types" dialogue, find the ".jpg" file extension and if there is *anything* configured/defined on the "Events" tab, delete it.
2. On the "Actions" tab, make sure that the "open" verb is properly set. What I mean by this is that it should look something like this:
"C:\This is the path\to\exifpro.exe" "%1"
The important part of what I posted here is that you need to use the quotes for the parameters (%1) and for the executable path as well should it contain spaces. To illustrate, I've attached a couple of screenshots of my working settings.
3. Repeat for the other filetypes you're having problems with.

227
Seeing as Directory Opus doesn't even touch the Windows settings for opening images (the Open verb etc.), it's impossible that it is causing the problems you are having with Windows Explorer. If I were to guess, the registry entries for certain image types have been corrupted.

I did some searching around on Google, and found this little utility which may be able to help you.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: 20$ off XYplorer and lifetime license

@KenR: Happy to hear we could help, I'm sure you'll enjoy Xyplorer...I know I do :)

@DonL: Was planning to listen to this episode later tonight, and it should be interesting to hear what they think. Is it his software pick of the week or...?

No, I would much rather completely stop using a computer than fully move over to any so-call "web 2.0" applications.

General Software Discussion / Re: Replace Windows XP's Icons
« on: October 10, 2007, 01:21 PM »
If you want the functionality of StyleXP or the UXTheme patch for free without having to change/hack any system files, just download and install the now freeware utility "Styler". Of course, it does a whole lot of other things as well, but it's a very lightweight and well worth checking out :)

I archive *everything* into their own organized folders, categorized by what the program does (development, graphics, audio, video etc.), then by application name, and finally be type of release (retail, beta etc.). With the cost of storage space these days, I don't see a reason why I shouldn't do this and so far it has saved me on more than one situation where some small little obscure utility have just vanished from the www. Of course, I should probably start deleting some older versions of my apps as at times I think I am taking this archiving thing a little to far.

Case in point; I currently have well over 100 versions of Xyplorer stored and I never really use anything but the latest release...but at some point it could be nice to have, especially if I am having a problem with a specific release :)

General Software Discussion / Re: kmplayer, whoa!!!
« on: October 07, 2007, 07:25 AM »
The reason it's playing better on KMPlayer in comparison to the others has nothing to do with the application, but everything to do with your codecs and/or video renderer + colour space settings. In this case with H.264 encoded content, KMPlayer (with the bundled H.264 codec) is actually very inefficient in comparison to any DirectShow player when you are using the CoreAVC codec. That said, it is a very nice program that I use daily, even if the configuration dialogue is designed by evil hamsters from hell...

Oh and in response to masu; Any DS player, ranging from MPC to WMP, will play unfinished videos as long as you use a proper splitter. I'm going to guess that the files in question are of the AVI type? If so, what you should be using is the Gabest AVI splitter (which I think is what KMPlayer uses as well) :)

Living Room / Re: Versioning of files
« on: October 05, 2007, 08:04 AM »
mitzevo,

that is nice !

#  Set or change a comment with a single keystroke <Alt+Z>
# Set/clear comments for many files at once (add to existing comments)
& so easy to copy,  :-*

EDIT: Seems to be available in free version as well..

unfortunately :) I use DOpus[8], will have to check out their take on this

Every file manager that works on Win2k+ supports this, even windows explorer. You can even handle this directly from the DOS prompt. It's absolutely useless for anything but the most trivial things though, as you will loose all your comments if you every copy the files to a non-NTFS drive (which means all usb thumbdrives, memory cards etc., and a whole lot of external HDD's if you don't reformat them to NTFS first).

I would personally have used proper a version control system like Subversion, but you have another choice as well; descript.ion files (assuming you don't need anything more advanced than the previously mentioned ADS). Don't know if it is supported in Xplorer^2, but I do know it is supported in most other advanced file managers (it is in fact a very old system, used originally by 4dos if Google is to be believed).
The syntax is very simple, it is just a plain text file with the following format:
filename.ext This is just an example
...and saved as descript.ion

As you are using Dopus, here's how you can handle it: Just create a new button or keyboard shortcut with the command:
SetAttr DESCRIPTION

Oh and don't forget to turn on the description column if you want to see the comments while browsing :)

If you use Total Commander, you can just use CTRL+Z to set the description for the selected file(s).

I going to take a wild guess on that you have Microsoft's Intellipoint mouse drivers installed, correct? Yes, they copied Exposé and called it "Instant Viewer"...and embedded it in their mouse software ;)

Living Room / Re: Podcast Clients....
« on: October 03, 2007, 01:05 PM »
Well, what I use is a wonderful (really) application called Ziepod+. The "+" version is $19.95, but there is also a free version available. The real strength of this program is that it not only lets you download, it will also stream both audio (available in freeware edition) and video (the paid version only) podcasts :) It also contains tagging features, filter settings, playlists, history, ratings, embedded browser and a whole lot more. It's one of the few application I would *never* part with, I just love it to much :-*

Here's a few screenshots that I just took:

General Software Discussion / Re: IE is working, Firefox is not. Why?
« on: October 03, 2007, 10:47 AM »
Very interesting!  I will save that and remember it.  Is that what normally causes firewalls to conflict with each other in cases like this?

Not really, as I think most firewalls installs as a ring 0 driver. However, many security programs install parts of itself as a winsock provider and can cause anything from slow connections to no network access at all. Applications like virus scanners that has a http scanner will always(?) install a component there.

If you want to check out if you have anything redundant there, you can use the "autoruns" sysinternals tool :Thmbsup:

In the future if you encounter such a problem, it could be that your winsock chain gets corrupted. If so, you could try:
netsh winsock reset
Followed by an immediate reboot of the system.

« on: October 02, 2007, 06:59 AM »
Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear enough: how can I rename those files simultaneously to a new name? Or you can call it batch rename. I just want that all files in that pic to be called a.pptx, a.rtf, a.txt and so on.

The simplest way in your situation:

Dirhael, that's PRECISELY the answer I was looking for. THANK YOU!

Just happy to help out a fellow Dopus user :)

I would never every even consider paying for a CSS editor that doesn't allow you to enter code manually. The "wizard" style of creating stylesheets that they are using is fine and all that, but hardly something you don't see in just about every other CSS/HTML editor out there. The advantage of these other ones? They give you the choice to do things manually once you start understanding how the language works, for less money...and trust me when I say that this is required when creating cross-browser compatible stylesheets.

I wouldn't buy this, even at $20...but of course, I'm just judging from the video overview on their website.

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 9 - How to..?
« on: October 01, 2007, 07:48 PM »
That's the way that I used, precisely. I knew how to get this.. which isn't to say I don't appreciate the description you gave, but what I'm looking for, ultimately, is how to make Opus REMEMBER this setting. In other words.. whenever I'm looking at a folder full of music files, I want to see the bit-rate, or even description because I kind of like the latter even better. I don't have to see description always, (though I suppose it wouldn't hurt, either), but only when I'm looking at folders with music in them.

To have bitrate (or any other column header for that matter) automatically applied for music folders, open preferences and go here:
http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/5481/preferencesdirectoryopuqc1.png

Double-click Music and you'll see this familiar dialogue:
http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/5706/musiceditformatha3.png

Hope this helps :)

General Software Discussion / Screenshot Captor featured on lifehacker
« on: September 27, 2007, 07:31 PM »
As I was getting my daily dosage of news feeds, I encountered a familiar name in the title on one of them; Screenshot Captor

Lifehacker seems to be very impressed by it, and says:
Windows only: Freeware application Screenshot Captor is an advanced, full-featured screenshot application boasting an impressive feature set that rivals the shareware favorite, SnagIt. For example, Screenshot Captor has tons of options for capturing your full screen, specific regions or selected windows; it has excellent callout functions, like standard arrows and highlighting tools along with the excellent blur effect you see in the screenshot above; and it can automatically open screenshots in your favorite image editor or email screenshots as soon as you take them. In all, Screenshot Captor may be the most full-featured screenshot app I've seen, freeware or otherwise. On the other hand, it does have a slightly steeper learning curve, so if there's a downside, that may be it. Screenshot Captor is donationware, Windows only.

With the number of readers that site has, I'm sure more people will now discover mousers excellent collection of programs :)

Congtrats!

Actually, if you go to the site and check it out you will notice that you can get both discounts on the same order. This means that you get no less than a 50+30% discount in total. Also, it is impossible to not get the 50% discount no matter if you follow the link in the DC discount post or if you visit the site. That means that nobody taking advantage of the DC offer could have purchased it at at anything more than $20.96 while this offer is/has been running.

Even if I don't need the product, I would have to say that a price just shy of $21 is indeed very nice of them ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: Using Nero 7 Anyone help????
« on: September 22, 2007, 07:12 PM »
As already mentioned, Nero will allow you to convert videos but not rip a web stream. What I use and recommend for this purpose is:

* Net Transport - Download manager that can rip just about any stream you throw at it. This is the one I use the most, but it's not free though.
* Ashampoo Clipfisher - Freeware program with a nice interface that will rip stream from some of the most popular Flash video sites (youtube etc.), and it will even convert them for you if you wish. I really like it, even if you can't use it with just any stream.
* WM Recorder -This one can also handle just about any stream you can think of and it's my second choice, only beaten by Net Transport. Why second choice? I just don't think the interface does it or you as a user any favours, as it isn't really as userfriendly as it should have been. If that doesn't bother you, this is the one to get...if you're willing to pay the ~$50 they demand for it.

Just rebooted into XP so here's the complete dump the relevant registry key I was talking about (I'm using a English version, Norway in regional setting (should be the same CP though..I think) and with non-unicode set to English US):

I seem to recall myself encountering a somwhat similar problem a few times in the past on XP, but the solution was different in most cases. It's been a while now, but here's what I remember..

* One time, it was caused by a corrupt registry. What solved it that time was to rebuild it. To do so, just download a trial copy of JV16 Powertools and use use the "Registry Compactor" utility. You could also use TuneUp utilities to do the same if you prefer that. Even if this doesn't solve your problem, it doesn't hurt as rebuilding the registry can solve a surprising number of problems. It's also completely safe as it doesn't remove any information, so... :)

* A few other times it was caused by a program messing with my codepages in Windows. I didn't realize it at the time, but it was actually some registry entries being imported from a Total Commander plugin.

The registry key in question was:
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage

Now what it [the plugin] had done to my registry was to change:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage]

"1250"="c_1250.nls"
"1251"="c_1251.nls"
"1252"="c_1252.nls"
"1253"="c_1253.nls"
"1254"="c_1254.nls"

into:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage]

"1250"="c_1251.nls"
"1251"="c_1251.nls"
"1252"="c_1251.nls"
"1253"="c_1251.nls"
"1254"="c_1251.nls"

It could be that something has done something similar to your registry. If so, could could try fixing it yourself by manually correcting the entries. I could check my recently installed copy of XP for my settings (the default ones), even if they might differ slightly. You should still be able to see if something is wrong on yours though.

---

As I said, it's been a while but I don't think I did anything else to solve it at that time. Hope this at least gets you a tiny step further in troubleshooting this :)

General Software Discussion / Re: IBM Lotus Symphony
« on: September 19, 2007, 09:12 PM »
I'll probably try it out at some point, but not until it has been optimized.
* Supported Windows platforms: Windows XP, Windows Vista
* Supported Linux platforms: SLED 10, RHEL 5, Redhat5
* 900MB disk space minimum
* 1GB RAM memory minimum
* US English locale

I may have 2GB of RAM in my PC, but to require 1GB minimum of it for these types of applications is beyond insane!

Also, just hearing the name "Lotus" again makes me crawl up in a dark corner while screaming out of fear.
