lol, I can rule out FF and TB, I use chrome and the web version of gmail. I'm going to run sophos and see what happens, after that I will replace the sata cable... but first, it is about 6 minutes until 2010, so I have other things I need to do.

I never replaced the cable, I might go ahead and use the cable that came with it. I'm fixing to leave for dinner right now though, so I will have to change it when I get back.

well I mean that is only when it first started. It has also started when I was watching a video, and it wasn't even an hd video at that.

It was a hard drive getting ready to fail.  Replaced it and all has been well since.
Well I haven't fully ruled out my new hard drive. I guess it is possible that I just got a bum drive.
Though the problem only started 2 days ago.
I was playing batman arkham asylum, because I just bought it and it finally got fully downloaded. My system more than meets the system requirements, and for an hour or two, the game ran fine, but all of a sudden, the freezing every couple of seconds started. So if it is the hard drive, then the drive must have just started to go bad about two days ago.

I've never heard of dma mode or pio mode, so I don't know for sure if my hard drive is running in dma or pio, but I did run across something that I thought looked like something useful.
dma.png
That is the closest thing I got to any dma/pio settings

those are the only devices under the ide ata controllers, and I attempted to update all of them through the windows update, but they were all up to date.

Living Room / Something on computer is fubar
« on: December 31, 2009, 04:12 AM »
I'm not sure what the problem is, but either some hardware on my computer is about to go out, or something.
For some reason, my computer randomly starts to freeze for about half a second, and it does this every 2 or 3 seconds. Also, the task manager and the cpumeter gadget built into windows 7 both say that the cpu is at 30-76% even though the system idle process is at 92-97%.
This makes watching videos, and playing games very difficult.
When I started this post, all of the above was happening, but right now, the system has stopped freezing every couple of seconds, but it still says the cpu is at 30-76% and the idle process it at around 90-92%.
I am pretty sure I can rule out the hard drive, because I just replaced it about a week before Christmas. So if anyone could help me out here, that would be awesome.
If you need anymore information, just let me know, and I will see what I can do.

edit:after further inspection, I ran across the resource monitor tool, and found out "System Interrupts" is what is taking up around 30% of the cpu

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Get Stubbs the Zombie for free!
« on: December 04, 2009, 10:38 AM »
Hmmm, the licensing terms are very restrictive, so be sure to backup the game and do not install it too much :D

Restricted to 10 activations between 2 computers. Yeah...if I hadn't gotten it free I'd be demanding a refund.

It's still a very good game for those with warped senses of humor.
Hope people aren't like me and have to reinstall windows periodically because I install to much crap and it starts to slow down my computer. I can only do that 10 times, and then I have to buy a new licence to keep playing the game. I hate how game manufacturers do that.

That is pretty cool. I would have never been able to come up with that on my own.

I also have to agree with Eoin. I have cable internet at home, but there is times when it goes down, and can sometimes take a while to come back up. I would be without a usable computer then.

For Device Manager and a lot more a 'trick' (not really, but surprisingly not everyone knows about this) I learned back in the Win2k days serves well here:
Right-Click on Computer and go to "Manage".

- Oshyan
Ironically, that is the only way I knew how to open the device manager for a while. (Still is the way I open it too)

my games list in steam has grown to a massive list from all the discounts over the past months. Darn you steam!

What's the Best? / Re: best macro making program with scripting

with the AutoScriptWriter, you record the mouse and keyboard, and then it shows you the script that it made, and you can add and remove anything you want from it.

If you can live without the icons try Alt-Esc for cycling between applications (and Alt-Shift-Esc for cycling backward).

(Sorry for mentioning this, but I know from my experience that people are often completely amazed with this "unknown" shortcut, built in Windows for ages.)
holy crap! I did not know you could do that. That is pretty cool.

lifehacker has an article on the vm that is available
Alternately, you can download a VMware build directly from web site gdgt as well, "no strings attached" (as long as you don't consider creating an account at gdgt and giving them your email address "strings").

I downloaded it, and for the most part, it isn't to bad. I didn't try it out for very long though.

General Software Discussion / Re: LogMeIn
« on: November 23, 2009, 10:08 AM »
I use logmein free version, and I find it to be a pretty solid service. I have it installed on my friend's computer, so whenever he has a problem, I can just remote into his computer and fix it. Their service is pretty fast and reliable. I have cable, and my friend has dsl, and I can see his screen perfectly, and there is only a slight bit of lag when something big updates on the screen, such as a window opening or closing. And the best part is, I don't have to forward any ports on my firewall, or his. I don't really know much about logmein's encryption, but I do know they use some sort of it, I forget what right now though.

am I the only one that got that he wanted to move the location of the start button and tray area, and not just the open windows? I wouldn't think it would be possible to move them, unless you used an alternative shell like target said

Living Room / Re: Looking to "mirror" some videos
« on: November 16, 2009, 10:09 AM »
I don't have it on my computer that I am using right now, but I believe virtualdub can mirror videos, and it is free and open source. It also has some tools that can possibly improve the quality slightly (doubt it, but its worth a shot)

edit:wow the more I look at it, the edges are really crappy. I guess thats what I get for doing a 5 minute selection job.
