Sounds pretty awesome. As soon as I get home from college, I will be checking this out. I just wish there were a version for linux...

I don't have access to my wap (I don't have the admin password, my brother is the only one who knows it), but it isn't blocking ssid broadcasting.

The xp computer is using simple sharing (I might have to change it though, and see what that does)

I'm positive all of the computers are on the same workgroup (we use home instead of workgroup or mshome)

I tried disabling the firewall on the laptop (forgot to check the xp computer, I'll have to check it when I change simple sharing)

I'm not positive, but I believe I tried changing the 128-bits encryption option, and I believe it didn't do anything.

Though I'm not really sure if the simple sharing will do much though, because my desktop can connect to the xp computer, and the laptop can also connect to the xp computer if I disable wifi and connect via ethernet. (which doesn't make much sense to me...)

Is the workgroup name on the XP machine the same as it is on the two Win7 machines?
yes

I've installed it, and found out that it works with my tv tuner card. I can watch tv, but it doesn't appear that I can rewind or pause live tv like I can with windows media center. I can pause it, but it doesn't pick up where it left off, it jumps back to live tv. Other than that, I haven't really used it much.

Living Room / win 7 laptop can't connect to xp desktop via wifi
« on: October 28, 2010, 04:05 PM »
I've got a kind of weird problem here. My mom has a toshiba laptop running windows 7 home premium x86. It is connected to the internet via wifi, and works perfectly. The laptop can see and connect to my desktop computer which is running win7 pro x64, but it cannot connect to another computer on the network running windows xp pro x86 by typing it's name. The laptop can however connect to the xp computer if it types in the ip address of the xp computer. I figured the problem might have been a problem with the onboard wifi card, so we plugged in an external wifi card with the same results. Here is where it gets interesting. I turned off the wifi card on the laptop, and plugged an ethernet cable into the laptop, and it can now connect to the xp computer by typing in it's name instead of the ip address. So my question here is what would be causing the laptop to be doing this?

I guess you aren't using gmail? With gmail, you can setup a filter that will forward any messages from a certain address to a different address.

 You older people and your weird ways... I guess you have to be older than 19 to understand what is going on in this video. To me, it makes no sense...

especially glad to hear we didn't let the magic smoke out...
lol, yeah that would suck. I just got my mobo back not too long ago because something on it broke. I would hate to have to get it fixed yet again

Sweet! Thanks Target Your setup worked perfectly. While I was waiting for a reply I just guessed and I got the headphone connectors correct, but I had the mic connectors backwords, so my mic wasn't working.
I've had this mobo and case for the longest time, and I couldn't not ever get the front panel to work.

I have an Asus M3N78-VM mobo and some cheap Justpc computer case.
I've never been able to get the front headphone and mic jacks to work. The case has some weird front panel connectors on it.
I hope someone can help me out here.

I've attached images of the case connectors and the mobo manual connection pinout.
If anyone can make any sense of this, that would be great.

Being that you have a dell laptop, getting a clean os is fairly easy. I bought a vostro 1520 not too long ago, and Dell gives you an OS reinstall disk, a driver disk, and any disks for software pre-installed (for me it was a cd burning software).

Just take the reinstall disc, and put it in the machine, and reinstall windows with that disc. You will have a clean OS. Afterwards, stick in your driver disc, and it will ask you if you want to run a special program that will read your system to find out all the hardware on it, and then it will give you a list of the drivers for your laptop with a check mark next to the items that it found on your system.

Once you are done installing the drivers, you can enjoy your new Dell computer without all the crapware.

If I could get all my windows only programs to work under wine, I would remove my 7 partition, and just run Ubuntu on my laptop. (I really like to no more cost part, and no more activation)

Whack youtube with a BFH and tell it to stop being lame... but no seriously, I couldn't tell you, because youtube is always changing things with their website. You might try rendering out the video in 720p resolution, and if it is smaller than 720, just add the black bars around it, I dunno.

General Software Discussion / Re: WindowMenuPlus freeware
« on: July 27, 2010, 10:19 PM »
I just installed it, and so far I like it

WindowMenuPlus sticks some extra menu items in the window system menu. It doesn't show in Chrome and I'm assuming not in other apps that use Ribbon and don't have the system menu in the upper left corner, but if the window has a Taskbar icon then you should be able to get the menu there.
I found out that if you shift right click on the taskbar icon (or probably just right click in vista/xp) it will show you the extra menu items for chrome.

General Software Discussion / Re: IMAP Email hosting
« on: July 18, 2010, 01:58 PM »
I'm guessing there is a logical reason that no one has mentioned gmail/google apps mail? I have my domain pointed to a google apps account and google apps also supports a catch all account, and also supports imap, which is what I use with thunderbird on my desktop. And for storage, gmail currently has 7 gigs of storage space(which grows like crazy all the time).

I figured all phones (even my el cheapo dumb phone) would lose some signal if you covered the antenna... though some more than others (iphone 4)

I don't know what pop peeper is, but I use thunderbird (on windows, but also available for mac) and I find it to be really good.

now you just need to run your tv and your old monitor at the same time... or if you have an onboard video card and a pci/agp/pcie video card like me, then you can go with a tripple display.
(I have a 17", 19", and 26" setup right now)

just quickly reading over the site, I gathered that you build an application, and then upload it to their site, and they host it on their site so that other people can try it out... there is probably more to it than that, but that is just what I got from it after reading over the site for about minute or two

Living Room / Re: TV Controls (rant)

I remember YEARS ago when I was a kid and changing the channel was INSTANTANEOUS! Turning now is like waiting for the next ice age.
I remember YEARS ago, when I was a kid, changing the channel meant turning the knob to the next position where a copper switch contact would make.  It would be an instantaneous connection but then you had to adjust the "fine tuning" ring to get the picture in clearly.
And you HAD TO get up out of the chair and walk across the room to do it!
:o :o You had to what?! The first TV I ever had included a remote with it... then again I'm only 19 and grew up with technology.

I will agree with the guy that steam is a great service and most of my game collection is now with steam. Though, I will admit that before I used steam I did pirate games. I didn't have a problem with multiplayer in my cracked games though, because I don't play multiplayer anyways. Though I wasn't lazy, my reason is that I can't afford to pay $50 for a game. (nor would I want to, that is way to much IMO) So the main reason that I started using steam is because they had a sale so I was able to buy a game that I had been wanting for only $5 instead of $50. So now I don't usually pirate games anymore... I wait until they are on sale on steam and buy them then.
