General Software Discussion / Re: alternative to filehamster?
« on: March 04, 2010, 03:31 PM »
I'm using this. May not appeal to power users, but is good enough for the average home user
Yadis! Backup

It's an easy-to-use backup-tool, which will save you a lot of troubles. It guards your personal data by making real-time copies (whenever you make changes to your documents) to almost any destination you choose.

When you use a backup-tool, it's often a hard job to learn to know all of the features. And when you've finally managed to understand every possibility of that tool, you realize it's not just that what you wanted.

That's why we've created Yadis! Backup. Take a look around and discover all of it's advantages...

It's FREE
It's small
It's easy to use
You can fully decide what to backup
It copies one on one your files to allmost any destination you want
You don't need Yadis! Backup to access the backed-up files
The marked folders are backed-up real-time (no scheduling needed!). You make a change? Yadis! Backup makes a backup
When your backup destination isn't available, Yadis! remembers the changes you have made. Whenever the location becomes available Yadis! starts backing up the changes.
Download today!
Don't hesitate any longer. Download Yadis! Backup right now, and enjoy the simplicity of making backup's!

The partition which has my MR images will hold 5 images. Would it be possible (and if so how) to write a command which would tell MR to overwrite the oldest image when the partition became full?

Thanks.

P.S. Does anyone know of an on-line primer for learning about creating run commands?

Thanks again.

New(ish) player in the field is GoAruna offering unlimited space and a slightly easier desktop upload process than ADrive.
Also note that Backupify is offering free accounts until end of January 2010.

Congratulations, good luck & heaps of motivation to all participants. Sure is an interesting list of pledges so far.
Best regards from (non-programmer) Clive.

We finally gave up & turned the subtitles on for "The Wire" - all that, mostly unintelligible, Baltimore argot meant that my partner was constantly asking me "what did they say?". Still one of our fave shows tho'.

iCyte - web only, but worth a try.

System Restore has worked for me but ,as with all things, you can't rely on it to get you out of all nasty situations. I use ERUNT as another form of system restore. (I'm a belt & braces sort of guy when it comes to 'puters). Most of you will have already heard of it, no doubt

Living Room / RAM & Virtualisation
« on: October 20, 2009, 10:38 PM »
I've read that Win XP 32 bit can only see/use (I'm no ubergeek  :-[ so not sure which is the correct adjective) between 3 -3.5 GiB. If there's more than that installed is it possible to use this "extra" memory to create a virtual drive or to assign it to a virtualised process such as a virtual OS?

Thanks in advance.

Anyone using Komposer/Nvu might be interested in the forum devoted to them wysifauthoring. It appears to be an active forum.

General Software Discussion / Re: Freeware Website Creator For Dummies?
« on: September 21, 2009, 09:34 PM »
I used Kompozer to create my website http://www.singaporedeep.com.au. I was starting from a KB of zero so I asked questions here & elsewhere. My faith in the human race was greatly bolstered by the generousity of everyone who offered assistance.
I did use a template created by Andreas Viklund. He has several which he offers for free use. I chose to use a template as I'm the sort of guy who paints all of his rooms white as choosing any other colour is too stressful!
I liked Kompozer because it was free, WYSIWIG, & most importantly created "plain" HTML code rather than something proprietory like Adobe CS which can then only be opened in Adobe CS. This meant that if I got stuck on something I could send a file to someone & know that they would be able to open it.

Pic is of a swamp wallaby - native to our bit of heaven. Also regularly see wombats, echidnas, snakes & bluetongue lizards. They all lead their lives in parallel to us. We observe each other & respect each others independence.

The Wire - Hoping Season 5 will be as good as the earlier ones
Mad Men - Hoping that there will be a season 2. A show where there's not one likeable character.

Have you been to your public library lately?  You might be surprised. That's where I get all my DVDs.

For those interested in further exploration of Virtualisation  this sounds pretty interesting. The link takes you to the Wikipedia entry while this takes you to the QEMU page.
Thanks, corrected the error

I've just started using screentoaster
It's a free web based app with generous storage (also free). It's quick & simple.

41
Onfolio. Initially stand alone software it was bought by MS & offered free as an add on to their Live Seach toolbar. Then it just dropped from sight. I'm trying to get people to add to this post: http://boards.live.c...aspx?threadid=924663 to try & have it re-instated. It is/was an extemely useful web research tool allowing one to record anything from a snippet to a whole website. A little like Evernote's web-clipper (but more funtional) or Google's (now redundant) Notebook clipper.
It was my tool of choice over Evernote or Onenote when wanting to keep track of web based research & I mourn its passing.
If you were a user of Onfolio & miss it as I do then please add your comment at the site above or write about it on your blog.

Google's Picasa could be worth a try too.

I offer this link to a discussion about the alternate view on so called controlled burns. I live very close to a National Park & controlled burns there have caused more destruction ,by getting out of control, than many naturally occurring fires. We have had a ringside seat observing the folly of Man believing that he can control Nature.

this script can make windows management a lot less painless.
I'm sure it wasn't Justice's intent to make our lives "less painless" by writing this AHK script  :-[
Rather "less painful" perhaps?

General Software Discussion / CamStudio
« on: January 11, 2009, 08:46 PM »
Found this interesting looking software at FDAD (http://www.freedownloadaday.com/) & followed the link to the actual site (http://camstudio.org/). The "owner" is asking for help with further development.

A Plea For Help ...

I've got big plans for CamStudio and want to continously improve it and the Codec as well ... but I'm not a programmer.

The potential for CamStudio to be used as a professional training and support tool is huge and not just in the information technology and internet marketing arenas, but also in diverse markets and tasks like home eduation, recording online geneological research, keeping a video record of special offer prices on your favourite snowboarding (or whatever) website - you get the idea ...

It doesn't matter if you're at home in Las Vegas or on an Alaskan Cruise - if you've got a laptop or PC you can use CamStudio.

So if there are any Visual C++ programmers out there that have Flash, video encoding and codec experience who'd like a challenge, would you please let me know ... you can reach me at the Helpdesk (link above) ...

So, at some point in the near future I'd like to start accepting donations so any coders that work on this project will get some kind of financial reward in addition to the warm, fuzzy feeling they get from helping to resurrect this cracking piece of software ... so if you're feeling generous, please get in touch at the email address above and let me know ...

I'd also love to get your feedback on CamStudio ... what you liked, what you thought sucked and what you think is missing.

Who knows - perhaps someone lurking  ;) here might want to get involved.

Have a look at Radix (http://www.hurstridge.com/). I used it when ,briefly, self employed. Wasn't very appealing visually & only does text type e-mails (to reduce chance of infection they say). It worked for my basic needs though.

Something called Radix (http://www.hurstridge.com/) is a program I used for a while when self employed. It's free for single person use.

Living Room / Re: HELP! Failed System Restore
« on: December 21, 2008, 05:40 PM »
First the caveat - I'm no geek nor nerd & in this company my knowledge base is comparatively small. I recently had an issue with my satellite modem where everything appeared to be functioning, but I couldn't browse or do email. After doing all the usual tests with the assistance of the ISP I finally resorted to doing a system restore. This resolved the problem. When I rang the ISP helpdesk to advise them what I had done the guy said " Oh yes it was probably the network drivers which had become corrupted & you could have fixed that by going into Device Manager rather than doing a System Restore."
Apparently the computer keeps a backup of the driver so the procedure is:

    1 Control panel
    2 Admin Tools
    3 Computer management
    4 Device manager
    5 network adaptors

select the approriate network driver, uninstall then re-install

    Hope that helps.

General Software Discussion / Re: Outlook & 2GB PST limit

Another solution posted here (http://ttrumble.com/...m-emails-in-outlook/ ) involves writing a macro. The blogger points out that even those fancy signatures that some people, himself included, add to their e-mails are attachments & also add to the burden.
