I'm a complete noob here and must say thanks to DonationCoder!  I won a copy of RoboForm and couldn't be happier.  I don't know where I've been for the last 3 years - I only discovered this site last week  :o, but I will be visiting here daily from now on.
Thanks again!

I can't believe I missed this thread. An extremely belated happy birthday to you. I hope it was the best ever. I too am glad you're part of the forum, not just for my sake, but for everyone as we all benefit from you.

I'll try to do better next year!

P.S. Thanks to the other "laties" who brought this thread to my attention.

Another very happy Where Is It? user.

My wife has used Masterpiece for a long time. It has been revised numerous times and is quite polished. To name just a few features: it will make shopping lists, you can print the instructions for a recipe to cook from, and you can cook things in the recipe database it includes or add your own recipes. The cost is very reasonable and you can usually buy it off the shelf for under $20 NOT on sale.

Ken - don't worry about me blaming you if I spend money on it. I'd be more worried about my wife, if I were you. I have a low threshold for pain and would probably sell you out before she even broke a mental sweat, let alone a physical one. Be afraid. Be very afraid  :o

Nice choice - looks very feature rich and nicely laid out... I *guess* I'll have to take a look, too!

Ok, but if you spend money on it, DON'T BLAME ME! Seriously, it's a really fantastic editor Darwin. I think you will like it - a lot.

there was a similar thread just like this recently and i suggested Atlantis Nova..

a free version of Atlantis Nova would do the trick.. you have to google for it though as the developers no longer keep the free version on their website..

I tried all of the editors people suggested. Again, thanks to all who contributed to the thread! After working with the various editors for a couple of days, I decided that Atlantis best fit my needs, though PolyEdit was a close second. If any of you are interested in an editor that can handle rtf and text files very well, I would suggest you take a look at these programs. A screen shot of Atlantis is shown below basically in the default configuration.

Given the recent events muntealb mentioned in his post, i really really wouldn't download that text editor. (actually, maybe you should remove the link or something, muntealb)

just to clarify - you dont mean the "Angel Writer" one (post #14) - or do you :-\

No, he was referring to Ultra-Pad there.

Lanux128,
It certainly was similiar. Thank you for recommending Atlantis.

OMG, what an interface >_<

yes, Michael has some very 'young' ideas about this, but Skinnable Interface is included.

I thought that something about Ultra-Pad rang a bell...  It seems that Michael J. Hardy has a less than stellar reputation among several freeware/open source authors:

http://paintdotnet.f...viewtopic.php?t=2442
http://youfailit.net/?p=63
http://youfailit.net/?p=49  (etc.)

I'm not sure if Ultra-Pad falls in that camp, but I'm not given a warm, fuzzy feeling.

Well, Ultra-Pad maye a no-go, but PolyEdit and Atlantis are both very nice and on the right track. Again, thanks for all the input and pointers on the subject. You guys are the best!

General Software Discussion / Editor Needed
« on: January 15, 2008, 08:41 AM »
Hi Gang,

I am looking for an editor that will allow me to format the text like Rich Text, modifying color, underline, bold, etc., like Martin Aignesberger's great Notebook Pro editor. In addition though, I would like it to be able to replace my text editor and able to edit text files without adding formatting codes. Some of my text files could be converted to another format, while files like .bat, .ini, etc. would need to remain pure text files. The program does not have to be freeware. I would be happy to pay for the "right program". All recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks, Ken

General Software Discussion / Re: GemX - missing in action
« on: January 13, 2008, 03:34 PM »
Armando and tamasd,

Thanks very much for the input. I've used Martin's software before and loved it. I had not tried notebook though. I don't want anything fancy. I don't want to write notes in database or I would use OneNote (which I adore). I just want to edit text files with some formatting. So Notebook might be perfect for me.

I just got interested in TextNote Pro because it looked like it would work with my notebook pc's pen, which so few programs will. So I got all excited about it. The need/desire though is much simpler and I won't likely edit with my pen. If I get interested in doing that, I do have a few programs.

I've downloaded and installed Notebook Pro. Maybe Martin will see the discussion and send me some great big discount code or something  ;)

Edit - Oops, I had forgotten that Martin already gave us a 50% discount code, valid until the end of Jan, in honor of our upcoming fundraiser. Act now everyone!

Thanks again guys.
Take care, Ken

General Software Discussion / Re: GemX - missing in action
« on: January 12, 2008, 03:22 PM »
... Did you want to do something in particular? There are so many other note taking applications around.

That's a great question and the answer is yes and no. I thought it looked like a nice app to use with a notebook pc, doing handwriting and such (I could be wrong about everything I believe it does). I create a lot of text files (which I currently manage with UltraEdit) and have been thinking for a while that using a Rich Text app to manage them would have some real benefits.

I did not go looking for a program, however. I just followed a post to it and was really impressed with what I saw. I knew people had experienced 'issues' with TextNote Pro's developer: GemX, but I did not follow those discussions closely as I did not own any GemX apps. I also didn't know the state of those issues or whether they had been resolved.

In addition to UltraEdit, I also own and love both OneNote and EverNote Plus. Perhaps once I understand TextNotes Pro better, I'll realize it doesn't do what I think it does or that it doesn't add meaningful features or benefit to my current software configuration. Any thoughts?

I have never looked at any GemX software before and know nothing about the company.

I just looked at TextNotes Pro. They are selling it for $24.95 (1/2 off I think) and it looks like an amazingly nice program. Is it worth the cost or should I stay away from GemX?

Thanks, Ken

Interestingly, all of the things I see being posted here as to what the tagging system is for and how it might work are VERY different than the individual discussions I have had with mouser about the topic.

Sounds a bit exaggerated, Ken. Mouser did show some interest in a tag system and he mentioned tag clouds, etc. I don't see how everything discussed here is so irrelevant unless he has substantially changed his stand.

How extraordinary, you have not been involved in the conversations, you have no idea what he said, yet you say I am exaggerating. I'll tell you something you don't seem to know, your ability to conceive of something is apparently unrelated to it happening. In fact, the discussions mouser and I have had about a potential tagging system have been exclusively about it being used to mark posts for inclusion in the blog, the newsletter, etc. (I don't know this is to be the only use, that's why I asked mouser to comment). If you scan the material in the above posts, I think you will find the material in them "VERY different". So, next time you decide to make a post suggest I'm exaggerating, (or just plain lying), you might want to have some actual relevant facts that suggest it's the case.

As all of us seem to agree that in the end, we will defer to his judgement on the matter (for a variety of reasons), it might be informative to get some input from him on whether he is going to implement a tagging system, what it would be for, and how it would work.

He's already stated the general focus here. And though he hasn't exactly reached out for suggestions & will spearhead the issue I see no harm in bouncing a few ideas around. Sadly, the issue is being confused with the rather sensitive one of further censorship (which 99% of the respondents don't seem to give a fuck  about).

Talk about it ALL you want. Create fantasies until your exhausted and bounce them up and down until you become vertiginous. Discuss how it will change the weather in your city or help you grow more facial hair. Me, I'd like some FACTS. I'd like to know what is actually going to happen. Only Mouser is going to decide whether there will be any tagging system implemented and, if any, what it will be. So, if he can tell us whether there is going to be a tagging system and knows what it will be (and I don't know that this is the case), then I want to know all the specific details that he is willing to disclose - not a "general focus"! Why are you so afraid of learning the truth about this issue? Are you more interested in ways it might be than THE WAY it's going to be? I would think that everyone would want to know everything they could about how things are going to be. Apparently though, that's just one of MY fantasies!

All good programmers know the maxim that users never use the software in the manner the developer planned for.  ;)

Put them in storage (attic, garage, storage facility, etc.) for when you lose all your hard work. As John Steinbeck said "...the best laid plans of mice and men sometimes go awry..."

General Software Discussion / Re: Radiohead video of Scottish Mist
« on: January 11, 2008, 09:14 AM »
This may be slightly off topic, but would it be considered illegal/unethical to share the original download with other people even though it was free in the first place?

And I thought the physical CD they started selling on Jan 1 had a few more songs than the download. What happened with that?

Anyway, Radiohead is a truly great band in my opinion, and in "DonationCoder" spirit I think it would be worth the low price to pay for the album to show support, even if you already got it for free.

Well, in my incredibly humble opinion, this whole thread is off topic. Nevertheless, I appreciate it being posted. I did not know this about Radiohead, and like Carol, I appreciate what they are doing. So, thanks for the thread.

I'll second PhilB66's first respond, WebMD. This is an outstanding resource and I know numerous physicians who use it. I have used it myself to look up information and found what I got from there to be accurate, up to date, and generally pretty thorough.

It is, of course, based on western medicine principle's.

Have a look at "DU Meter" from Hagel Technologies -
http://www.dumeter.com/?LangID=EN

I love this program and have used it for years. The latest version has an automatic mode in which it hides when there is no internet activity and becomes visible when activity begins. You can also make it partially transparent (adjust the amount of visibility). Check it out if your unfamiliar with it.
