and when you say temp, I assume you mean the ambient temp?  If thats the case, what are your system temps like (Mobo, CPU, etc).  Worth having a look regardless as it could be indicative of a larger issue

77
+1 for trying it with another PC/laptop.

failing that, got a spare nic by any chance?

78
not bad (wasn't expecting that accent though  ;D ;D ;D)

might be an idea to provide an outline of the content so we know what to expect (I'm not a console guy, so this one was largely lost on me)

Only a building block for making a script, but worth mentioning: The AutoHotkey function DeskIcons works for me in Win10 and some in its forum thread report that it works for them in Win7 too https://www.autohotk...c.php?f=6&t=3529

Edit: sorry, I read too quickly. The above function only saves/restores the position for already existing icons on the desktop. It does not restore icons/shortcuts that have been deleted.

All good, I'd forgotten about AHK in this context.  I shall have to give some thought to how I might approach it...

Not exactly sure how to snswer shades

This isnt my machine (its my mother in laws) so I'm getting support calls whenever it happens.

Don't know about the system setting but itsvworth a check.

I confirmed the behaviour this afternoon by creating a new shortcut, created a save in desktopOK, then deleting it again.  The restore option in desktopOK failed to reinstate the icon, or the other icons i also deleted as a test

General Software Discussion / desktop backup and restore

I'm pretty sure I've seen this asked about before but I can't find it now so apologies for asking again

I have a Win7 desktop that forgets/loses/deletes its icons periodically, and to the best of my knowledge without any user input

I've tried a couple of tools that are supposed to backup and restore the layout (Desktop OK, ICU) but they don't appear to work either.

Lots of questions about this on the net, but they all pretty much point to the aforementioned solutions (which aren't working in this instance)

Anyone got any clues or suggestions?

First thing that jumps out at me is your naming convention.   Try to come up with shorter names, eg 'cam' instead of 'logitech webcam'

84
what are the shortcuts used in the 'yourphone' app?  sounds like there's a clash to me...

85
change the design of the gear such that instead of printing the 'D' shape it has a keyway instead.  That way you can insert/replace a piece of square (?) wire or rod to form the flat in the centre (FWIW keystock comes in standard sizes and should be readily available)

ran across a reference to Hildegard von Blingin' (its a play on words apparently) this morning

she does medieval covers of modern songs, which is an interesting take (YMMV)

In principle it works yes, although I can't seem to get the Undo function to work.

Unfortunately theres no undo, but im not sure why you might need it (unless you're wanting to reverse changes made incorrectly?)

88
any feedback on this?  Did it do the job?  should I try to polish it up a bit?

89
apologies for my tardiness, been a bit preoccupied with the job hunt...

regardless, try the attached.

It's just an on-change macro, ie when a value on the sheet changes it fires off.  It uses a couple of 'helper' values - the stock column (B) is duplicated in column D and used to check for changes in stock levels, and there are subtotals in cells B1 and D1.
  • If the value in the stock column goes up, the corresponding check value in column D is amended accordingly.
  • If the value in the stock column goes down, the difference between the new value and the check value is added to the sales column (E), and the check value is amended to match the new stock value.

in practice both row 1 (with the subtotals) and the check column would be hidden as they don't add anything useful to the user (and any user changes to those values would result in corrupted values)

its not terribly pretty, but it works OK for a first cut

appreciate any feedback you might have

seems like the big business approach these days is to carpet bomb the market into oblivion, then build your business once any/all previous players are gone.  It takes deep pockets (which don't seem to be in short supply) and the only likely winners are big business (and certainly not the consumer)

91
pretty sure I can automate this, but it might take me a few days to organise...

TSaints solution works, but seems (to me) like a convoluted way of doing it

92
question, and apologies if this seems inappropriate for your situation.

Why 'assume' that the 2 correlate?  I don't know what your product base is but would assume that you might need some means of identifying lost items, ie just because the stock level has decreased a corresponding increase in sales shouldn't necessarily be assumed.

FWIW I'd be happy to have a look at it for you, but I will need a copy in xl format (I don't have access to excel at the moment, but I can work with spreadsheets...)

Maybe just past the text in a quote in your post instead of attaching it as a download.

I would have but I thought it was too long - I've amended to link to the source page

this was posted on Kottke.org yesterday.  not sure if its helpful or not, but it resonated with me...

I can't really offer any sort of a recommendation but man oh man but you must be hard on your gear!   I've never had a mouse (or keyboard) fail and I've been playing FPS games regularly for over 20 years.  FWIW I'm currently using an ($80) gigabyte gaming mouse (M800x) that I've had for nearly 10 years, and a generic logitech keyboard for well over that, and I've yet to have an issue.

Since you've been using generic mice for some time now the MS mouse is probably worth looking at.  Its recently gone back into production and the reviews I've seen have been positive (and I used one for many years at work without an issue).

98
FWIW the solution to your 'problem' is the program itself.  No value in using external apps like AHK, or probably even an addin, cos its something thats easily done in excel using VBA (ie a macro).

That said, unless you can give us a sample file (or at least some reasonable details) its probably going to be difficult for someone to put something together for you (and I don't currently have access to excel or I'd knock something up)

Of course any solutions offered now will be moot because you've already resolved the issue anyway

99
if all the sheets are in the same format (all columns match and all formulas are the same) then you're only copying the data (the calculations can be done in the target sheet)

The simplest way to do this for a one time job is to copy + paste - it would have been done in less time than you've spent on this thread

if you need to do this often (ugh...), then its not as simple as just finding an addin.  Every situation is different and you have to make sure the data is clean before you even start (else you just end up with garbage)

and its not like this is news, it's been like this for years.  Clearly there's something that needs to change, but we're not seeing any activity from either side of the fence here...
