Living Room / warmouse
« on: June 29, 2010, 05:55 PM »
saw this on slashdot this morning and figured some here may be interested (nudone)

An anonymous reader writes "The much-anticipated, much-mocked 18-button joystick mouse from WarMouse is now shipping. The press release features an impressive set of user quotes from game designer Chris Taylor, new SFWA president John Scalzi, and a doctor who runs a medical software company. Crazy or not, it's obviously more than just a gaming mouse."

full press release here

looking at this thing I couldn't help but wonder if, in the midst of some frantic gaming, a user wouldn't end up with the same result you got on an old manual typewriter when you mashed a bunch of keys at the same time

saw this on slashdot this morning - Theremin Hero

not quite sure where this fits - I was tempted to tack it onto the 'recommend some music video's' thread

regardless, I thought it was an interesting exercise (air guitar hero anyone?)

Living Room / zen and the art of file and folder organisation
« on: May 13, 2010, 06:19 PM »
this is probably nothing new to you guys here, but many (most?) probably support more than their fair share of technically challenged users

saw this yesterday at how to geek - Zen and the art of file and folder organisation

The article basically describes a set of guidelines for managing data that may be useful for showing people the 'right' way to do things (hands up all of you who know someone that just dumps everything to my documents or the desktop, or even worse, c:\)

Developer's Corner / Wordoid.com - make up words and test them out
« on: March 18, 2010, 05:50 PM »
ran across this one this morning, Wordoid.com:

http://wordoid.com

wordoid.png

Wordoid is an online service that allows you to 'make up' words and scan the net to see whether or not they are already in use.
Service could be used for domain names, or more usefully to work out a title for that killer piece of software you're developing.

Living Room / any (Nokia) mobile phone maven's out there?
« on: January 20, 2010, 08:36 PM »
anyone here have any knowledge or references for working with media (music) files on a nokia mobile?

I've just started using the 'music player' functionality on my Nokia 6120 and I'm finding the whole experience a little frustrating...

I added a 4G memory card (not unreasonable I felt) and sometimes the handset seems to hang/choke when scanning for files.  Sometimes the phone will recover after a while (5-10 minutes), and sometimes I have to reboot it to get back to normal operation.  Once it's working it's fine...

managing files using the supplied software (Nokia PC Suite - now OVI) is OK, but it's not inspiring confidence in me...

OVI is slow to just to load (a couple of minutes?), and scanning the device is also slow, and on occasions it also seems to choke (it scans and scans and scans)

Initially I copied files by removing the card and using a card reader, but the phone seemed to have a great deal of difficulty, ie some tracks wouldn't play at all, some would play partially, and some would cause the above hang, etc.  I then redid it using the supplied software which was marginally better (the tracks all play now) though the initial load took an extroadinarily long time (90 minutes for about 450 files - though subsequent attempts seem to have been much quicker) but the problem hasn't been resolved.

once completed OVI reports 349 files which clashes with the handset which reports 708 - browsing the phone using the 'file manager' would seem to indicate that the handset is correct, ie there are folders/track listed that don't appear in OVI

can anyone tell me if this is normal behaviour for these things or if I'm just fortunate

FYI both software and firmware are up to date...

DC Website Help and Extras / is the chatroom borked?
« on: January 12, 2010, 11:19 PM »
could be just me (surely not...), or maybe there's a larger problem...

for the last 3 days I haven't been able to access the chatroom, well, I can access the page, but it just cycles through the servers repeatedly without actually loading/connecting

this is consistent across IE and FF...

anyone else having this issue?

General Software Discussion / PDF's
« on: November 01, 2009, 10:47 PM »
What do you guys do with these damn things?

PDF's are ubiquitous these days, and with care and consideration they are eminently practical.  Unfortunately the converse is also true, and without that care and consideration the resulting documents can be real PITA

To put this into some context I work with a lot of documents that are sent to us via email in this format.  As they are generally produced by our mutifunction printers there is little or no control over the output (even if the senders had the interest or the knowledge to make the effort).  Net result is that we routinely get high resolution colour documents and the file sizes reflect this, eg the latest example is a 40 page document containing text only (some in tables) that is 10.5M.

We have no requirement for high resolutions or colour, and given that they are almost purely text the final file sizes seem to defy logic.  Apart from Acrobat (not an option in a corporate environment), there seems to be a dearth of solutions that would enable us to tackle these monsters

Plain PDF compressors do not appear to be helpful in this case (often the output is larger than the original)

Likewise reprinting the document to new PDF (using one of the myriad of 'PDF printer drivers') at a lower resolution generally produces a document that is larger than the originals (sometimes significantly) which seems to defy logic (oftimes the output is missing large sections, and/or the some of the text is mangled).

I'm sure I'm not alone in this, so I'd be most interested to hear what others are doing in these circumstances

I was going thru my junk box the other day and I've got almost enough pieces to put another machine together

I don't need another machine, and it's relatively low spec but still too good to toss out (AMD 2600, 2G ram, GeForce 256 w/TV out)

the TV out part got me thinking that maybe it would make a reasonable media box (not that I really need one of those either, but digital TV is starting to come on line here at the moment)

I'm a total noob to this so I've been googling all over on this over the last few days and while it appears that the specs are adequate, I don't seem to be able to find much info on these sort of setups - there are plenty of forums for established or distro specific setups, but not much about how to go about choosing a particular platform.

As an added complication I would also like to be able to use it as a 'NAS' when I go to LAN days (windows network)

I'm OS agnostic on this (I'm familiar with Windows but not Linux :o) and would prefer a 'headless' system, which I suppose implies some sort of server OS (again, something I'm not familiar with), and controlled via a remote or gamepad

Does anyone here have any experience with anything like this, or can point me at some worthwhile resources

TIA

General Software Discussion / network activity monitor wanted
« on: July 01, 2009, 07:50 PM »
a friend of mine (a serial downloader) is looking for a tool that will 'log' his net traffic, ie which app's are generating traffic, and how much (up and down)

Personally I have no use for anything like this so I'm of limited assistance.

That said, we've tried several network 'meters', but none of them show traffic by application (only as a cumulative figure).

any suggestions?

Argumentative is open source Argument Mapping software.  It allows you to view and manipulate the structure of an argument.

there are a lot of links off the site to relevant or associated materials so even if the softwares of no use the refence material may be...

Living Room / What the? - the case of the undeletable file...
« on: December 10, 2008, 07:32 PM »
I don't really expect to get a definitive answer to this one as there are simple too many unknowns, but...

I have written a bundle of Excel macros that are used widely throughout our company.  To simplify the distribution/installation they are packaged into an (NSIS) installer.

I recently released an update to a limited number of crash test dummies users and have run across an issue that I don't understand and which is preventing me from distributing it further.

In this release I renamed the addin to indicate the version, something I hadn't previously done.  Problem is that whilst the installer deletes all traces of the old version, the deleted file is magically reincarnated at the next reboot (and blocks the loading of the new version).

to further complicate the issue, it doesn't happen to everyone (though it is consistent for those who are afflicted).

I have been through a couple of users PC's and can find no trace of the offending file anywhere (including network drives), yet after a reboot the file returns.

I've uninstalled the addin and it still returns

We are operating on a corporate LAN using XP desktops and office 2003 - the desktop environments are (virtually) SOE so there is little room for an unruly app to be the culprit here (and what app would do something like this anyway??)

I've also asked this question on our internal tech forums and no one had any ideas or suggestions...

I realise the enormity of what I'm asking but any/all suggestions would be appreciated

General Software Discussion / looking for...a wiki?
« on: September 03, 2008, 07:53 PM »
this is pretty trivial but I have an idea I've been kicking around for a couple of days and I need some guidance...

we recently moved office and the new site doesn't have any white boards - that could be a good thing, but it doesn't leave us anywhere to note our teams whereabouts (planned leave, meetings, etc)

I was thinking along the lines of a 'web' page that could sit on one the local machines and provide the same basic function, ie a simple table where we can add a name, and details of upcoming events/absences (see the attached HTML example).  It shouldn't be static, rather users should be able to edit or update their respective entries

It seems to me that a wiki would do exactly what I want, but I've never really gotten into them (love the idea, just can't quite grasp the reality) so I have no idea whether or not there's something out there that might fit (from literally thousands :o)

any ideas?

EDIT - 04Sep 11:20 added the attachment i forgot to add (DOH!!)

Living Room / What printer?
« on: August 06, 2008, 08:16 PM »
I'm looking to buy a new printer and wondered what others might be using, or more importantly, be prepared to recommend

I guess we're looking at an all-in-one type machine, and probably at the 'budget' end of the range (<$200AUD) which may or may not help...

some background - we purchased a HP 4280 all in one last Xmas, but it's performance has been far from stellar.

Print quality is pretty ordinary (even for text) and the software is worthless (eg attempting to use any of the supplied software results in a BSOD, attempting to use the built in card readers results in a BSOD, it routinely attempts to dial home regardless of any settings to the contrary, and it randomly reinstalls itself - there are currently 3 or 4 copies of the printer installed...)

It's installed on my wifes PC which is (currently) running Vista, which may be some of the problem, though I have no real way of knowing...

hmmm, somewhere along the way this has turned into a rant... it doesn't matter now as we're going to return it...

Anyways, over to you guys, any/all ideas/suggestions/feedback appreciated

I'll start by saying that I have (until recently) had no interest in or requirement for anything like this, hence my knowledge of all things relating to video editing, conversion, production, etc is practically nil, and as such, I have absolutely no qualifications for writing this review...

Recently though my inlaws purchased a shiny new HDD camcorder...

how is that relevant?  well, for a start they are techonogically challenged.  They really shouldn't have any tech whatsoever, period.  They didn't seek any advice regarding their purchase, just what the salesmen told them on the day (I think you can see where I'm going with this....)

They have an old PIII that they can play patience on and type up the odd letter (the MIA does the odd birthday card as well...) but it's nowhere near capable of coping with the software that was supplied, nor do they have the faintest idea how to use it even if they did, so it's fallen to me to try and rescue the situation (datdaDAAA!!!!)

13.gif

I have dabbled with a few similar app's in the past (Super, DIKO, and others) but always struggled because of poor documentation and/or my aforementioned ignorance, and my results were never what I would call acceptable (in fact, in most cases they were abject failures...).

DeVeDe on the other hand was something of a revelation.  Not only was it dead simple to use, but I understood what it was doing, and I got good results (choose the output format (DVD, VCD, SVCD, CVD or DivX), add my files, answer the prompts, and I'm done!!)

The interfaces are logical, clean, and simple, with all the common functions ready to hand, and the lesser only a click away.

encoding takes a few hours, and there are a few output options - in this case writing to an image (ISO) ready for burning seems an obvious choice, but ymmv.

you can add a simple menu (limited to 12 titles), chapters, subtitles and/or audio for each title, even adjust the bitrates and audio synching.  If you add multiple files to a title it will stitch them together

the app claims to be economical on HDD space (roughly double the final file size if you delete the temp files, triple if you don't)and it cleans up after itself (nice!).  The default option is to delete all temporary files, though you can turn this off if you want.  Some of the other apps I've tried produced an extroadinary amount of temporary files (up to 10X the final file size!), and left me to clean up.

Another nice feature is the 'adjust disk space' function.  Press the button in the middle of the dialog box (the one showing the projected size) and it will adjust the bitrates (within limits - up or down) to best fit the available medium.  The result is an approximation of the final size that (they claim) may be smaller than the listed size, but will never be bigger (from use it appears that this is a very conservative estimation - it seems the result will ALWAYs be smaller than the estimation).  Useful if you're a few meg over the limit of your medium.

The help file is short (24 A4 pages), but clear.  Explanations are simple and in plain english, and cover the available functionality.  And if you can't work it out from the help file, the app is intuitive enough that browsing through the options should help to make things clearer.

Power users might prefer a more masochistic tool, but for what it does this one has got to be hard to beat (even my inlaws should be able to master this one!!)

Who is this app designed for:

It would probably suit novice's, or users with simple needs, eg converting those You-Tube video's into a DVD, bundling episodic videos so you can watch them on your TV, etc

The Good

relatively small download (20M)
all inclusive download (no other tools required!)
simple but includes all of the necessary (basic?) functionality
logical and intuitive ( )
allows a fair degree of control over the finished product (if required)
economical and tidy use of resources
documentation is clear, concise, and in plain english

The needs improvement section

for my purposes there is very little that needs improving.

One thing that initially limited my use of this tool was the limit of 99 source files.  For most purposes this is probably sufficient however in this case I had to come up with a means of stitching some of the source files together in order to meet this limit (remember my source files were from a camcorder so there were over 250!!).  Not necessarily a big issue, but another level of complexity for users (the inlaws) to potentially deal with.

If pushed, I could perhaps comment on the 'Disc Format' gui's lack of sophistication - a slicker, toolbar type GUI would perhaps be more attractive (I'm thinking along the lines of the old CloneCD here), and perhaps the inclusion of ISO burning functionality, however these these are trivial issues, and wouldn't improve the app in any way

Why I think you should use this product

this is possibly one of the simplest and fastest (encoding aside) ways to convert your digital video collection into a watchable DVD.

How does it compare to similar apps

hard for me to say, but in my limited experience most similar apps seem to be overly complex, and/or require 'helper' apps to complete the job.  Many seem to have little or no documentation, or if they do, it's written with a level of assumed knowledge that i don't have.  Net effect is usually a steep learning curve, a reliance on whatever tutes or guides you might be able to find, and a measure of good fortune.

Conclusions

this probably shouldn't strictly be considered a review, more of a recommendation from a satisfied user.  As i said before, I'm in no way qualified to make any sort of recommendations or criticisms, however I do consider myself to be a fairly typical user and as such it probably has some value.

Likewise it would be silly to assume that there aren't other tools that can do what this one does, or that there aren't tools that can perhaps do a better job, but like everything, they aren't always easy to find (well, they are, if you know what you're looking for, in which case you probably didn't need this review anyway...).

And while this probably isn't for everyone, it suits my (meagre) needs - I can watch video's with my family on the TV, and my inlaws should be able to transfer their video's to disc for show and tell nights with their friends.

if you try it, let us know here so others can benefit from your experiences...

Links to other reviews of this application

While I could find plenty of references to this tool I was unable to find any reviews of any significance (if you do find some, let me know and i'll add them here...)

What I want to do is build a graphical (tree) representation of a hierarchical structure.  What I have in mind is something pretty simple, ie no links or special effects.  The option to collapse/expand the tree would be nice, but not essential.

I have been googling and there appears to be plenty of builder app's, and plenty of CSS solutions, however I would like to keep this to a single file if at all possible.

Source data is in tabular (excel) format - I can see that a number of the CSS solutions use unordered lists as their source, and I can produce this relatively easily (in VBA).

What I don't seem to be able to find is a non CSS option (as usual, the problem is that I don't know the right questions to ask - then again, if i did, I probably wouldn't need to ask in the first place!!)
