hoping someone here can help out  :-[

I have a few hundred devices that I need to retire + delete from intune but the portal doesn't cater for bulk deletions.

I've been googling solutions and it appears it can be done via powershell, but none of the scripts (or the associated 'explanations') I've found are particularly helpful

I'm not familiar with powershell, but I can understand the intent of the commands (its plain english, not rocket surgery!).  Trouble is I can't understand why they're not working (presumably there's some component or action thats assumed by the authors but not stated)

TIA

I have been cleaning up old PC's at work and have a bunch of desktops that are intended to be donated to a women's DV charity

They don't currently have any OS installed and the business isn't going to spring for (w10) licences for donor devices

What recommendations (if any) would you guys have as far as Linux distros?

Bear in mind the intended audience will most likely not be terribly computer literate (beyond web surfing and email), and probably only have been exposed to windows OS's

TIA

this was discussed long ago, in a thread far far away, but I'm no necromancer so new thread...

I have a bunch, but just like IRL some appear to have expired or are languishing so I'm wondering what you all look at regular like...

Living Room / Any Twitch users here?
« on: August 28, 2022, 05:39 PM »
Wondering if anyone else has issues with accessing their accounts?

I'm an occasional user, but find that my accounts somehow 'disappear'?

I currently have 2 (!) but can't access either of them - they've changed their log in process, ie it used to be email but now its user name and I have no idea what I used and none of the things I try seem to work.

Even their password/account reset process fails to respond to a valid email address.

Am I alone in this?  I really don't want to have to create a new account every.damn.time I want to watch a random vid

Living Room / playstore downloads
« on: September 21, 2021, 05:43 PM »
anyone know what the go is with playstore download sizes?

I'm finding that the listed update sizes do not correspond to the actual download sizes (assuming I can believe those values are correct as well...)

Typically I'm finding that the actual download size is typically 2 or 3 times what's shown before you press the update button

Could be I'm just old and cranky, but I manage my data use pretty carefully (its expensive!) and this seems like a pretty gross misrepresentation

General Software Discussion / 32bit Linux distro recommendations
« on: December 16, 2020, 05:47 AM »
Looking for some recommendations for a nix distro for my atom powered netbook.

I've been trying to install a bunch of different distros but none will actually install.  Some just don't boot properly, or go through the install process then still don't boot.

FWIW I'm a total nix noob.  I've toyed briefly with a few live distros over the years but never made the effort to take it seriously.

I figure now's as good a time as any to make the effort, and hopefully pick up a few new skills

General Software Discussion / desktop backup and restore
« on: July 25, 2020, 09:27 PM »
I'm pretty sure I've seen this asked about before but I can't find it now so apologies for asking again

I have a Win7 desktop that forgets/loses/deletes its icons periodically, and to the best of my knowledge without any user input

I've tried a couple of tools that are supposed to backup and restore the layout (Desktop OK, ICU) but they don't appear to work either.

Lots of questions about this on the net, but they all pretty much point to the aforementioned solutions (which aren't working in this instance)

Anyone got any clues or suggestions?

General Software Discussion / Best app to learn SQL on
« on: November 04, 2019, 06:01 PM »
Any recommendations?

I'm wanting to teach myself some SQL and want to know a good place to start.  I have a couple of books, but I'm a bit confused about which software package to work with (I tried MySQL and it installed a million things that I didn't know what to do with)

General Software Discussion / maybe of interest - another security flaw

besides being pointless fluff, it seems all this RGB blinky stuff can also be a potential security threat

Looking for an app that I can use to review >800 tracks.

Background is that the files were all on a USB stick in my wifes car, and some were displaying odd artifacts at the beginning of the track when played on the car stereo.

Rather than scrapping the whole lot I'm wanting to review them to see if any are actually corrupted or whether the problem may lay with the player (its in a 4 year old subaru)

60 seconds should be more than enough to id any offenders, and I can listen to them while I do other things.  Having to do it manwelly is tedious, and gets in the way of work

Idea's or suggestions appreciated!

I loved 3 & 4, and I've just finished 5, but it has to be one of the buggiest games I've ever seen...

Screenshot Captor / Draw a rectangle on W10
« on: April 02, 2019, 12:02 AM »
It's likely me cos I'm not a regular user, but I'm not able to change the colour of a rectangle, specifically the border

I'm trying to highlight a bunch of fields on a screenshot and can only get a black rectangle (not yellow like I specified).

Any suggestions?

Nice piece of software from Skwire, and some worthy recognition

General Software Discussion / desktop sharing tool
« on: May 13, 2018, 08:35 PM »
anyone got any current recommendations for a desktop sharing tool?

looking for something simple - pretty limited use, ie desktop support for my inlaws (so potentially lots of calls, but only 1 or 2 users)

A search on DC throws a number of suggestions but most posts are quite old or have since disappeared

General Software Discussion / save to text or print to file in chrome
« on: December 19, 2017, 12:46 AM »
does anyone know of an xtn that might allow me to either save a web page as text (it's actually plain txt, not HTML) or print it to a (txt) file?

I routinely have to download reports from our systems at work and it appears that chrome simply doesn't have this facility.  I have IE11 too, but when I save as text it introduces a whole bunch of artifacts that are throwing my processing tools off.  Then there's FF, which does do what I need, but I'm so over FF that this is the only thing I use it for and I'd like to consolidate if I could.

DC Gamer Club / fortnite...
« on: November 15, 2017, 07:19 PM »
<rant>
anyone playing fortnite?

gotta say this is one of the most frustrating games I've ever played.  Learning curve is relatively simple but the reality is quite steep

It could be fun, but there's no soft point of entry to learn tactics and weapons.

After 70 matches I've only had 20 kills - I've had 6 top 10 finishes, and on most of them I've gotten to that point without having actually seen another player.  On at least 2 I've gotten to that point armed only with the most basic pistol or machine gun and a handful of bandages which seriously doesn't cut it when you eventually do see someone...ok, they pretty much always see me, not so much me seeing them

I really want to enjoy this game, but it seriously wants to make me smash something

General Software Discussion / chrome has stopped working error...
« on: October 08, 2017, 05:56 AM »
anyone here had any experience with this phenomenon?

My wifes laptop now routinely throws this error, despite the fact that Chrome clearly hasn't stopped working.  I've tried most of the sensible fixes (including uninstalling and reinstalling) but I still can't resolve it

64bit win 8.1, and, well, chrome...

General Software Discussion / lastpass and firefox
« on: May 11, 2017, 01:13 AM »
just wondering if anyone else has experienced issues with lastpass in the last couple of days

I haven't been able to use it since monday - I can log in (most of the time), but that's about it.  Nothing works, no autofills, no site captures, nothing.  It's become a notebook

Apparently there was an update pushed out over the weekend that's been causing some problems (I found a discussion, but didn't bookmark it...DOH!) but haven't seen anything about a fix or a workaround.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling (no change) and rolling back to an earlier version (which worked the first time, but got updated again, and hasn't worked since)

General Software Discussion / dvd players + video formats
« on: November 02, 2016, 12:51 AM »
any video authoring buff's here?

I'm trying to convert some vid's to a format I can play from a USB key on my DVD player.

As usual, the destructions are less than useful here (compatible formats are avi,mp4,mp3,wma,etc,etc,etc)

I realise they're talking about the 'container' format here, and so far I've tried a number of things (H264 as MP4, MP4 as MP4, MP2 as MP4, MP2 as AVI, H264 as AVI, MP4 as AVI) but can't find a format that will play...it can see the damn files, but it won't play them.

There's probably a basic standard in play here, but I'm damned if I can work out what it is...

any idea's

Non-Windows Software / android remote control tool...
« on: September 01, 2016, 04:27 PM »
Just wondering if anyone here has any suggestions

I have a perfectly serviceable android handset sitting in the drawer that I would like to press into service as a remote camera (all above board, I promise).  It needs to be usable via wifi, and should give full control of the camera's controls/functionality from my PC (laptop)

The intent is to be able to take a series of relatively high speed stills, but the tools I've tried so far (airdroid, IP WebCam, DroidCam) only appear to provide video streaming or very basic control of some built in apps only.

Seems to be plenty of tools that work the wrong way round (control a pc from the handset) but not much that does what I want

Living Room / recommendations for a free web host
« on: July 16, 2016, 02:32 AM »
looking for some advice and/or recommendations regarding free web hosting for a local sporting club

I've done some static pages before, but never had a need for anything like this and I really don't know where or what to look for (or look out for)

I envisage this will be a largely static site, with a members only section for results and the like, email support (for contacting the committee), and probably pretty low bandwidth

any and all advice greatly appreciated
