General Software Discussion / Another Curve-ball For You Guys!
« on: March 06, 2009, 09:30 AM »
I'm starting to sound like a broken record, asking about little programs left and right, but I have an idea for one if it doesn't already exist. Is there an app that can rename folders and/or filenames in bulk so that the folder/filename are all capitalized. I'm going through a TON of eBooks that have jacked up filenames. I just want to quickly clean them up. Anyone have an idea and/or a solution?

You guys rock, so I know you'll deliver. LOL.

General Software Discussion / djvu files?
« on: March 06, 2009, 05:39 AM »
Anyone know of a good app that reads djvu files? I tried installing DJVuLibre, but all of the downloads were rogue files (in my opinion), so I don't want anything to do with that app. I don't need anything with lots of bells and whistles, just a simple app to read the djvu files.

As usual, your input is very much appreciated!

General Software Discussion / eBook Reader alternate to Acrobat?
« on: March 06, 2009, 05:25 AM »
Hello all:
Well here I am again, looking to you for some suggestions. I have Adobe Acrobat Professional, and I do a lot of reading PDF files. I'm wondering if there is another PDF reader out there that is more streamlined, slick and easy to use. I really have no problem with Acrobat, but it takes a while to load and can sometimes be sluggish. One thing I adore about Acrobat is the ability to correct the pagination (one of my pet-peeves), but other times it can be a real pain. For example, a lot of PDFs I open ignore my default view settings. I would love to have one of those Amazon Kindles, but there's no way in hell I could shell out the dough for that one. The more I think about it, though, maybe Acrobat is the best thing out there, but I would love to hear what you all have to say about this topic. I spend so much time reading PDFs that I now require an app that makes me smile every time I open it. LOL

As usual, any comments/suggestions, etc are very much appreciated.

Living Room / Wanting to donate...
« on: March 03, 2009, 01:40 PM »
Hello all:
I felt that I should express my gratitude for all of the help you folks have given me over the past few years. What prompted me to post this topic is that a few years ago I was able to donate to DC, but as of late I am unable to, given that I am disabled and my only source of income is disability payments. I wonder if there is another way I can contribute to keep DC alive and kicking. I feel that I should somehow be able to help considering I rely on you folks for giving advice and such. So if there is anything I can do, please let me know. I really want to help out in some way. But be forewarned: I know nothing about coding. LOL.

I tip my hat to you!

General Software Discussion / Password Protect File Or Folder?
« on: February 20, 2009, 08:08 PM »
Hello all:
I've been searching all over the site, but couldn't find what I'm looking for, which is an app that password protects a file and/or folder on my hard drive. I just need a simple app that won't open a file and/or folder without a password. Is there such an app?

Many thanks in advance!

After reading several articles on Wikipedia I had to seriously rest my eyes; websites aren't meant to be stared at that long. So I'm wondering if there exists an application that "lowers the lights" or adjusts the contrast of your average website, making it easier to read lengthy websites. Is this pure fantasy, or is there something out there that does this?

Living Room / Tagging Conventions/Folksonomy
« on: January 29, 2009, 04:25 PM »
Hello all:
This may seem out of left field, but I know that you folks always have the answers.

I'm wanting to go through all of my bookmarks (Firefox) and give the URLs a tag. I'm a complete dork, so I want to know if there's a categorization scheme to follow. I guess I'm looking for something like the Dewey Decimal System of bookmarks. Also I think I should add that I already do some general categorization of my bookmarks in folders; for example 'art', 'tech', 'games', etc. Also, should my tags be more specific than the folders which contain them? Geez, i hope I'm making sense... :)

PS: What's all this about Folksonomy? I'm reading about it on Wikipedia...

Find And Run Robot / FARR Alias "f"
« on: October 11, 2008, 07:04 PM »
I'm wondering about the alias triggered by "f", which I looked through the aliases list to find that it's supposed to look up processes running in the background. When I type in an entry such as "firefox.exe" it takes me to http://file-extensio...xtension_firefox.exe. It says I should click on a link to find out more about that process, but it takes me to http://www.liutiliti...eextensionseeker/rb/, which tries to sell me a product named Uniblue RegistryBooster.

In the alias section of FARR it shows the following in the "results" window.

File Extension Seeker (Example: txt) - $$1 | http://file-extensio.../filename_extension_$$1 /ICON=icons\file_ext_seeker.ico
FILExt / File Extension (Example: txt) - $$1 | http://filext.com/de...llist.php?extdetail=$$1 /ICON=icons\filext.ico

I like the idea of using FARR to look up background processes, but this just seems like spam; and I know that FARR would never intentionally that. So is there anyone out there with the same problem, or have suggestions/advice, etc.?

As usual, any help or suggestions are very much appreciated!

Living Room / Inane Question...
« on: October 10, 2008, 04:13 PM »
Hello all:
So I'm doing some spring cleaning of my "My Documents" folder and have decided to combine my eBooks with all my other text files. I have all the child directories labeled as I want them, but I can't decide what to name the parent folder. Maybe "My Text Files", "My Texts", etc...

I know this question is utterly inane, but when I have a question regarding my laptop or desktop, I go straight to DonationCoder.

So, ideas?

Kind Regards,
Daniel in Tulsa

General Software Discussion / CCleaner Or Not?
« on: September 23, 2008, 12:26 AM »
Hello all:
I'm needing to remove an entry on my Add/Remove Programs list that just won't go away no matter how many times I "uninstall" it. I found CCleaner (ccleaner.com) as a possible freeware utility to remove it from the registry. Is this a good idea or not? Is there something better out there? I don't want to fiddle with my registry any more than I'd have to. CCleaner also touts to be able to remove unnecessary files, which I would like, but I'm nervous about doing things like this.

Any help, suggestions, etc are much appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Daniel In Tulsa

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Character Table Plug-In
« on: June 15, 2008, 02:27 PM »
I installed the Character Table plug-in into the latest version of FARR and I can't get it to work. From what understand, I'm to type "cc $ a" (minus quotes), and then be given a choice of accent marks and diacritics. No luck for me. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Any help is much appreciated.

Find And Run Robot / How to install Google Dictionary in FARR
« on: February 22, 2008, 09:38 PM »
How do I add Google Dictionary to FARR. I unzipped the file and placed it inside the scripts folder. But when I bring up FARR and type in "gd whatever" nothing comes up. What am I doing wrong?

Mouser, I know you'll help me out. You're the FARR mega-master. Obviously. :)

General Software Discussion / Send link and/or webpage?
« on: February 10, 2008, 07:37 PM »
I'm wondering if there's a program that can do what I want, which is best explained in an example. I have two PCs, one laptop, one desktop. Let's say I find a webpage on my laptop, but want to "send" it to my desktop, or in other words have it display on my desktop PC. Is there some sort of app that I could just press a button and the displayed page is sent to the other PC? I hope this makes sense. Of course, I'd like this to work both ways: if I'm on a page on my desktop and want to send/display it on my laptop, I'd like to just press a button, and voila!

I imagine this would require a home network, which I have...

Any ideas? Is there something that already exists that does this?

Kind Regards,
Daniel in Tulsa

General Software Discussion / Wallpaper Manager?
« on: December 15, 2007, 06:05 AM »
Does anyone know of a good freeware wallpaper manager? Currently I have to open Windows Explorer, go to the folder where I keep my wallpapers, find the one I want, then right-clicking on it to select "set as desktop background". I use xplorer2 as my file manager, and it doesn't have that capability. I don't really need or want my wallpaper to change ever so often, I just want a good, simple app to manage and set my wallpapers.

Thanks in advance. You folks rock!

General Software Discussion / Good Digital Vid Organizer?

Does anyone know of (preferably freeware) software that organizes Mpegs and other videos? I'm especially looking to tag videos.

Find And Run Robot / Program Icons Won't Show...
« on: September 22, 2007, 08:21 PM »
I use the following alias "DVD", but no icons show for the programs that are to be listed. I right-click on them and select properties, but nothing comes up. The alias is:

1000>>>DVD>->WinDVD 8 | "C:\Program Files\InterVideo\DVD8\WinDVD.exe">n>AnyDVD | "C:\Program Files\AnyDVD\AnyDVD.exe">n>VLC Player | "C:\Program Files\VLC Player\vlc.exe">^>myaliases.alias

Any help, suggestions, etc would be much appreciated.

General Software Discussion / General Context Menu Editor?
« on: June 12, 2007, 01:33 AM »
I'm looking for a (freeware) program/utility that enables you to edit context menus within Windows Explorer (or, in my case, xplorer2). I know I've seen this software somewhere before... And I have no idea why I don't still have it installed.

Anyone have some input on this query?

Kind Regards,
Daniel in Tulsa

Find And Run Robot / Help with a group.
« on: January 07, 2007, 01:59 AM »
I'd like to create a preformatted group (or alias) that allows me to enter a keyword and "press" the "I'm feeling lucky" button of Google. In other words, I'd like to bring up FARR and enter "lucky donationcoder.com", lucky being the alias/group name, donationcoder.com being the keyword. I don't want to see any search results, I just want the "I'm feeling lucky" result. How can I do this? I do have a group/alias that gives me a Wikipedia result for a keyword, but I haven't been able to copy it and try to modify it for it to work in this situation.

It's late for me and I'm sleepy, so I hope this makes sense. LOL.

Thanks guys!

General Software Discussion / Good Freeware Video Editor?
« on: December 29, 2006, 04:47 AM »
Anyone know of a good freeware video editor. I have ArcSoft Showbiz pre-installed on my PC, but I don't like it very much. I'd rather support open source. All I really want is to be able to do some basic editing, fades, add sound/music, titles, etc. Also want it to support a variety of formats. I've looked all over the internet, then realized I should ask here. You guys rock. :)

Find And Run Robot / Lost New Email Alias

Somehow I've managed to lose the email alias. Does anyone know the preformatted alias group for launching a new email from Outlook Express?

Find And Run Robot / FARR GUI Behavior
« on: June 16, 2006, 09:57 PM »
Firstly, I absolutely adore this program. A feature I'd like to see in the next release is the ability to dock FARR, or at least have FARR remember it's position. After using it several times, it tends to creep upward. I like it to hover just above the Windows toolbar. Also, I've noticed that sometimes FARR shrinks vertically, partially hiding the help and options buttons.

Regardless, thanks so much for a FANTASTIC utility!!!

Kind Regards,
Daniel aka siouxdax
