sorry for any confusion - i've gotten a few emails from people who are wondering the same thing.
you've got it right -
the discount is already agreed to and settled, we are just waiting on a discount code and form to give to our members.

agnitum outpost works by activating the trial download, so i suggest, as i did in the review, that you download the trial and install it, and use it for a few days while we are waiting for the official discount gateway, so that you know it's right for you before you spend any money on it.  At $20 it's a pretty great deal but still no point being imprudent, might as well use the trial for a couple days and make sure it's something you want before you lay out the money.  the trial is fully functional just has a 30 day limit.

when i get the codes i will send out an email and we will probably put the links and codes in the Members Only section of this forum, since that is already set up to be for member's only.

thanks nudone, i appreciate that - i wanted to do something to show you guys how much we appreciate you helping us kick start this project off on the right foot.

I'm going to have those discount codes/forms up any day now - we just have to sort out the best logistics for it.  ScooterSoftware is a small enough company that you could probably email them right now to have them apply the discount with your purchase, but it's probably best if everyone could wait until we get a the official codes set up.

Long Story about the New 50% Discounts

Ok i think it's time to spill the beans about the new discounts situation.

I told you all before that we were going to be able to offer our members a 25% discount on the Agnitum Outpost Pro firewall.

I'll be sending out an email as well when the discount order bridge is up, but I want to share with you guys the full story behind what has become a 50% discount on both Agnitum Outpost Pro Firewall and on the new reviewed product, Beyond Compare !

After our initial review of Agnitum Outpost we were contacted by Agnitum, who were interested in our opinions of what could be done to adress the one critical aspect of our review.  After some discussions, I brought up the possibility of Agnitum offering a discount to our members here.

It initially appeared as though we were going to be able to arrange a 25% discount for our members, which would be pretty nice by itself.

It's fairly standard for software companies to offer commissions to sites or stores that can bring them sales, and Agnitum offered us a comission on sales generated from our discount offer.  This is common and standard practice.

But we decided that commissioned sales was something that we will not do.

We don't want to have commissions or advertising that would cause our members (you guys) to question whether our reviewers were slanted in order to boost sales revenue.  Such an arrangement seems like it would at the least cause some suspicion and mistrust.

We proposed instead that DonationCoder.com and Agnitum team up and try an interesting experiment.

We proposed, and the good folks at Agnitum were flexible enough to arrange, a 2 week period wherein our members would be offerred a 50% discount on purchases of Outpost Pro.  I think this is a fantastic offer and I'm really happy about the entire arrangement.

DonationCoder.com received absolutely no commission or payment from Agnitum from this deal, which is why we were able to get such a high discount for you guys.

This is not to say that we don't benefit from this arrangement - we think we will benefit from making you guys happy you joined, and by showing that we are serious about being able to negotiate discounts for our members.  We hope that word of mouth will spread and that we will be able to get more visitors to the site to check out what we are doing here, and maybe even join the site with a small donation.

I hadn't really conceived of this site as a mechanism for collective bargaining but it's clear with the interest we've had in the site that we should be able to secure further discounts for our members.

Please bear in mind that we are absolutely committed to giving our reviews of programs without respect to whether a company is willing to offer a discount to you guys.  Whether they offer a discount is ultimately going to depend on whether they think it is in their interest.  But the more people we have at DonationCoder.com the more likely it will be that a company will want to offer a discount.

We made very clear to both Agnitum and ScooterSoftware, the company who makes our latest reviewed program Beyond Compare, that we were going to write our glowing reviews no matter what.  Whether they offered any discount at all.  The reviews get written based on our love of the programs we give awards to.  That's the whole point of our reviews, to find the best programs in each category that we love, and lavish praise on it and give it an award.  We made clear that the content of the review would be unaffected by the discount offered by them.

But we also explained that a significant discount, beyond the ordinary, would be something that our members would recognize as a fantastic opportunity to get the best program in it's class, and that such a discount would likely result in substantial purchases from our members.

It is to the credit of the Agnitum advertising team that they were flexible enough to be able to facilitate this arrangement, and we appreciate Agnitum working with us on this first experiment.

In fact on the basis of this arrangement, we were able to convince the company behind today's reviewed program that they would also benefit from offering a 50% discount on Beyond Compare.  You'll see from the review of Beyond Compare how much i truly love the program.  I've been a registered member for a few years now and it's just one of those programs that brings me joy to use.

Beyond Compare's normal price is only $30.  With 50% off that makes it only $15 which is almost obscene for this program.  And if you read today's review there's a suprise ending that blew me away when i spoke to the developer today and he told me.

The idea of Agnitum at $20 and Beyond Compare at $15 almost sounds illegal :)

We've set up a new section on the main page to spotlight these new discounts, and we will reserve this space for companies that are willing to offer our members significant discounts.  We hope this will bring a little more attention to these time-limited deals and encourage new members to join.

Again, we will accept no commissions or advertising fees from these companies; we benefit by making you guys happy you joined and by bringing new customers to our site who we hope will donate.  And the more people we have with us the more appealing it will be for companies to offer us discounts.  As always, people can join by making a donation of any amount.  We have had people join at $1 and people join at $200.  By donating what you think is fair we hope that you will view this site as a place you can feel proud to be a member of.

Now, please do not get spoiled by the size of these discounts.  We worked hard to get these up to 50% but we're just not going to be able to have this level of success all the time.  Don't expect every program we give a rave review to to be offered for a 50% discount - some companies may not be willing to offer a discount at all.

And also please don't forget that the reviews and discounts are just one part of this site!!!

Our software is the other main aspect of this site, and as you can see from the forum, we're having great fun talking with users about new feautres to add, and new possible programs to write.  In fact I'm hoping to make some updates available next week.  Your donations make this possible.

In time we hope to get a few more quality software authors to join us and offer some more unique homemade software.

LASTLY,
and please forgive me for going on an on,
i want to send a sepcial thanks to bob at shellcity, and all of the wonderful software fanatics that have come over to us based on the announcements on bob's great site and newsletter.  it was a real thrill to us to have so many people join in the last week, and it really reinforced in us the desire to make this site a place where everyone involved feels like they are getting a great deal not at the expensive of someone else, but rather in cooperation with each other.

If you want to help, you can do so by simply spreading the word about this site.  We're going to be trying to get the word out ourselves but we can use all the help we can get.  And we're finding that once people find their way to the site, they seem to like what they see.  So if you can help us get out the word on any forums or newsletters you know about, please do!

I think that with your help we can make this site a real success and a nice place to hang out  :beerchug:

the more feature requests the better - just to gather ideas.

letting user choose options might not be a bad idea - i have to re-examine the code again to see what's easiest; but if nothing else i can add the option for the display you want.

the whole original purpose of f&r was to launch shortcut (link) files :)
thats the only way i use it, to launch shortcuts from start menu, so the fact that it doesnt work on your shortcuts at all is kind of distressing ;)

ill look more specifically at the shortcut launching code again next week and i will check both the behavior with regard to not closing immediately, and the beheavior wrt launching shortcuts, maybe ill find something for us to try out.  meanwhile let me know if you figure out any more clues.

i think adding hotkeys would be a reasonable thing to add, considering that f&r has to be sitting waiting for keypresses anyway - so it might as well be checking against some user defined hotkeys.  as usual though the trouble usually comes in making a nice user interface for the user to specify options, etc.  but i may give it a try since i think it would be a nice thing to add.

keep the suggestions coming!  its nice to hear other people's ideas for what areas deserve further work.

you definitely should not have to hit alt-tab to switch to it after it activates.  does this always happen? what application grabs focus from it?  or does the focus stay with the application you were using when you hit break.

maybe when you hit break you are in an app that is stealing back focus? does this behavior happen no matter what app you are using?
what os does it happen in?

find&run has had tons of testing on my single pc, but not much testing out in the real world, so there could be issues liek this that need addressing  - i will fix it, we just have to find a way for me to see the problems.

- On that note, is there a way to make FindRun close at the beginning of the launch process rather than once the target application becomes active?

yes this is what it should do - i will check the code to make sure i'm not doing something stupid.  but yes it should exit immediately after telling the file to open.

i'm not sure why its having trouble with shortcuts.. can you be a little more specific about what it does?
all of these problems are on a win2k machine?  if so i will try some extra tests on a win2k machine and see what i see, though really it shouldnt be any dif than winxp.

tell me what you would like wrt columns - there are various options in the config to change what is displayed, from just the file/shortcut name to a bunch of columns.  if you have some dif requests let me know.

i'm going to try to do some updates next week of my apps so its a good time for requests :)

the focus of our site is software, developing our own in house software and on recommending the best software.
i don't think hardware reviews are really in our purview.
but i was thinking it might be nice to have a little hardware section where people recommended hardware they have that they think is the best after careful comparisons?
to keep the same spirit of helping cut through all the confusion?

i have a canon inkjet i bought after years of hp and i just want to shout to the world how much i love it more than my old hps :)

well now you are talking about something near and dear to my heart.

i *LURVE* the dialog box modifiers, and i could not live without them.

we plan to do a review comparing them soon - there are quite a few now, all of which work slightly differently.

i have seriously considered making my own dialog box modifier, and you are right, that would be the situation where adding such functionality like moving dialogs under cursor could be added.

there are enough cheap dialog box modifiers now that i'm still not sure it pays to make one of my own.. i havent found a free one yet so i guess i have to go investigate dialogmate now :)

if you have ideas for new features it would be intersting to hear.

i have been using recently filebox extender, which i purchases a license for several years ago, switched away from when it started having trouble with ms office dialogs, and just recently switched back to now that it seems to be working well again.

psHotFolders is also very good.

i like the subtle way filebox extender and pshotfolders add just one tiny icon to upper right with list of favorites.

i use mine not just for the quick favotites but also to expand open/save dialog box sizes and switch always into details mode.

truly i could not live without a dialog box modifier,
and this is one of these things people don't know even exist.

ripe for a donationcoder.com review.. will have to plan one soon :)

i just tried http://www.wmrecorder.com
and it finds the exact same url that we found
BUT
it IS able to record it!!

unforunately wm recorder is not free, but
the fact that it can record it probably means that another free tool,
and maybe do a better job.

but i just verified that wm recorder can record it.

37790
some nice music on there by the way;
if you find a way to record it please post and share :)

37791
hi dj,

i remember your post from streaming media recording forum
which is still the best place to get help finding particular streams, since we have some real experts there
who know this stuff much better than me.
i tried sniffing for the url like you, snooper gave me that sameaddress you have, it's not very useful is it..
i think we will probably have to wait for one of those streamin media experts on the other forum to help us figure it out,
it's some kind of windows media player streaming trick. if your thread on that forum starts to move off page ill bump it back up until we find the solution.

i was actually thinking of moving the forums from there to here so its all in one place.. still considering..

I have also tried using the URL Snooper to obtain the URL but I have not had any success. I first launched the URL Snooper program and clicking on 'Sniff Network' and then I hit the play button on the embedded media player.
Is this the correct way to obtain the URL from URL Snooper?

yes; just make sure you have selected the right network adapter in the options; you should see a count of packets being scanned on the bottom left.  in this case there are no multimedia urls so you won't see any in the results list until you change the Protocol Filter to something like "show all" in which case you get some links similar to the one you posted.

if you never see any packets being counted as it scans, it means you haven't selected the right network adapter, or that possibly you are on dialup and need to do the special workaound to get url snooper to work with dial-up.

« on: March 17, 2005, 10:45 PM »
By default after one registers at this forum, you will see when you post and in your profile you are marked as a "visitor."

When i get notified of a new signup at the forum i check forum profile against people who have donated, and i move your
status to "Charter Member" if it matches an email i have on file.

If you find that you are still maked as a "visitor" after a day, it probably means i missed it or you used a different email; just send me an email on personal message through the forum, and i'll make sure to correct it so that you are properly identified as a charter membet.

ProcessTamer / Re: ideas for process tamer
« on: March 17, 2005, 08:44 PM »
that problem is probably due to the fact the process tamer is single threaded and goes to sleep and only wakes up once per second to check on things and process clicks.  so if you double click you have to wait a second for it to "take."  ill bet that is the issue, rather than having to click it multiple times - just seems that way because their is a delay it in responding.

i'll fix this in the next release - which should be available next week.

Mouser's Zone / Re: Any new ideas for small utilities?
« on: March 17, 2005, 07:24 PM »
now that is an interesting idea..
as you say, i've heard of programs that jump the mouse cursor to the box, but not ones that do what you say, which does seem like it might be kinda cool and less disorienting.

i do already have code to efficiently enumerate windows written in process tamer,
maybe i will do some more investigating into possible window operations that might be useful, in addition to moving certain dialogs to the position under the mouse.  i'm not sure it would be worth the effort just for that, but maybe if there were a bunch of things, like auto pushing certain buttons, that altogether it would be worth doing..
the only reservation i have is that it seems like the best solution would be to have one of these existing programs that already do much of this to add this one feature, rather than me writing a whole new thing.  but it is intriguing..
i will def. give some thoughts to this since process tamer is already a good skeleton for such things.

i just bumped you to a charter member so you may not have had permission to set it before then.
just click on your name to show some info about your nick,
then click on Forum Profile Information from left hand bar,
then you should get a list of avatars or be able to upload your own.

our idea is when we pick a category, we will first try to find the very best software in that category.
if that program is a free or open source program, then we will just review that program, and of course note that it is the best and is free.

however if the best program in a category is shareware, then we will often try to also find the next best program that is free or open source, and present awards to both, and describe clearly what we liked about each.

this way, those who prefer open source or free software, or think that the commercial app does not justify its price will still have a clear choice about best free program.

37797
i should have been clearer-

the only thing i was talking about was making it possible for visitors to the web site to be able to browse the help files online *without* ever installing the program.  so it would just be a way for people to glance through the manual without having to actually install the program.
for people who already have it installed it would be of no value, you'd always have the normal help files in the program when you install it.

37798
don't forget we will post a new software review/award every saturday.

actually this week we plan to do our first of hopefully many combo awards, where we will present two award, one for best app overall, and one for best open source / free alternative.

great to hear that - i've been discussing some possible new features with other new members..
if anyone has some feature requests please post!
i may be able to do an update next week.

two features in consideration for adding are optional reading of windows' internal list of programs run and adding them to history for faster search and easier location of recently run programs outside of f&r, and the ability to search for folders.

i'm open to any other feature requests!
