Best Text Editor / Re: UltraEdit 11 - Best text editor?
« on: April 25, 2005, 07:04 PM »
yes, a special review dedicated to programmer's editors will be in the works eventually, and include ue studio and slickedit, multiedit, and probably return to zeus, etc.   it might have been smarter if i talked about the different uses for a text editor and said how this review was really focused on evaluating an editor for general purpose use, rather the use as a hardcore programmer's editor, and left programs like Crimsons and Zeus out of the review completely.

thanks for reminding me - hierarchical note takeing apps are one of those programs like wsw that many people dont use and which i consider to be one of those kinds of apps that can make such a difference.. so they really need a review and advocacy.  going to be a tough category to review though since there are so many to review and most implement basic functionality pretty well.  maybe this would be a good review to do in a manner less focused on a single best program, and more focused on advocating the category.

f&r will get a real update soon - i have some features i really want to add, and f&r is in need of some tweaking. i will try to find some time in the next 7 days to do the update for it and address these issues.

if you can find a specific search that yields duplicate entries, please write it down so we can test to make sure i fix it in the next release.  i will see if i can improve the focus isse - i seem to remember experiencing this myself at some point..

i think such a program probably already exists;
very easy to program.

if cant find a good freeware tool to do this, submit it for this weeks upcoming 2-5 hour game and i will write it.

good point... assuming i understand your point..

since these jobs should only take a few hourse it's not so much of a worry that more than one programmer might be working on it,
but i think the best policy would be that members should post ideas for silly little programs and any programmer who plans to work on it should say so, should make a post to that effect when they start working on it, so that other programmers can skip it unless they want to try as well.

so if you are a programmer, you must make a post before you start working on it, and after you finish, so that you save another programmer from working unnesc. on something they wouldn't have started if they knew someone else was working on.

my intention was that we have these things at the end of the month, but i dont see any harm in letting people suggest and code whenever they want.  i am making a page to host the programs, and associated source code if appropriate.

try to be creative people!! let's get some funny silly stuff coded.
prizes will be awarded for creativty, originality, humour, etc.
and hey, if you can think up a non-useless app that can be coded in 5 hours, go for it.

ProcessTamer / BetaNews listing
« on: April 25, 2005, 03:08 PM »
Latest version of ProcessTamer was listed on BetaNews today (http://fileforum.bet...s_Tamer/1111857421/1).

Betanews is a great site that announces beta releases of applications, along with user comments about the programs.

if you love software but don't visit betanews daily (http://www.betanews.com), then 2 things are true:
1) you're missing out
2) you're not visiting the DonationCoder.com links page (https://www.donation...com/Links/index.html)

no excuse for either of these..

you know, the idea of holding control key to quickly toggle between column and normal selection mode is a good idea.
not having a menu item in edit or view menu to change selection mode, and having to hunt for it in program options, now that is silly.

answering my own question, you can select the DEFAULT selection mode (column or line), and then use ctrl key to toggle.  column mode doesnt seem to be able to insert, but still its not a bad solution.

perhaps i should add some comments about vim for hardcore users; i know there are people that swear by it.  for me, when i moved from using a text-only terminal to using a graphical OS, i decided that menus and buttons were a good thing, and i'm not a fan of these programs that can only be controlled by hitting 5-key alt+ctrl+escape combinations.

hehe column mode in zeus-- now its all column mode and i cant select anything BUT column mode, exactly as you said.

did i do something to put it into column mode, or is it ALWAYS in column mode and cant do normal selection, which would be much more insane!!! and can you figure out a way to get it to wrap on window boundry automatically without inserting CRs into source code?  if so i'd love to know.

usability definitely matters - if you see how i ammended the vim review you'll see my basic attitude.

i've finished updating the review and adding boxer and zeus.  i actually ended up recommending zeus at the end of the review as a very good cheap programming editor.  Again, this is really pushing the scope of the review, as if i was reviewing programming editors i would have included slickedit and multiedit, and others.  and both boxer and zeus have very poor wordwrapping, which basically disqualifies them as general purpose editors, in my way of thinking.  however, zeus+boxer are cheap enough that they probably deserve a mention.

as with other modifications, see the upper left of the review in the sidebar, for quick links to changes.

sinbad - you're alerting us to programs we missed is much appreciated - this is exactly what i had hoped would happen with these review forums - provide a way for members to help make sure the reviews are thorough.  i just would like to figure out a way to get the reviews up in draft form so we can have some comments before they go public.  we will try this from now on.

im trying zeus again and im being very impressed with it as a text editor.
i can see you must know the field of programming editors quite well.
let me finish evaluating zeus and i'll repost.

boxer added to review;
indeed it has some very nice features.

however it is also rendered completely unacceptable by a bad wordwrap implementation.
funny that's 2 good editors that i consider unusable because of their word-wrap functionality.

however i can see that making these reviews more open to member suggestions before publication is going to really improve their thoroughness; it's awfully hard for one person to know about every program in a class.

hi sinbad; i'm going to try boxer now; i've tried zeus a while ago for programming and was not satisfied but i haven't used it in a while and i will evaluate it now for text editing. i will report back.

i probably shouldn't have included vim in my original review at all - i understand some keyboard-centric people like it but it is just too unintuitive for me to really consider it seriously. but i thought i should mention it for people who like such things.  reading the built in help is extremely painful, and i couldnt find any hex/column modes.. could you tell me how to use them?

37445
i think we will have more coders joining us for this game, so people start thinking of ideas!

General Review Discussion / Years on awards?
« on: April 25, 2005, 04:54 AM »
should we put the current Year on the award images? ie not simply "Best Text Editor" but "Best Text Editor - 2005" etc.
in anticipation that the choices may change over time.

i think what we will try to do from now on, is try make the review available a couple of days ahead of time to members of the elite ASRT members, for early comment and review.

this would avoid the scenario just experienced where one of the members on this forum knows better than the reviewer of a flaw in a program or error in the review, and let us fix these things before the review goes public.

i've updated the review and withdrawn our recommendation of pspad - this is simply too big a problem and disqualifies PSPad from a recommendation.

i'll make a post on pspad forum; im sure they know about it but its worth mentioning to them again.
