8000 dream on..

the limit seems to choke out for me around 1000.

not sure what to make of msdn saying 2047/8000...

maybe i'll experiment later and see exactly where the trouble begins..

General Software Discussion / Re: RSS Reader?

sharpreader is .net.
and java apps are the most consistently able to make my machine spontaneously reboot.

um.. weren't java and .net supposed to be the "safe" languages?

Best FTP Server / Re: 15% Blackmoon discount at Shareware Plaza
« on: May 08, 2005, 07:16 AM »
nice find zaine.

when you see a discount on another site you can be sure that they are getting a commission from the sale -
so by all means WAIT and don't buy this until we talk to blackmoon, as the chances of them offering our members a larger discount is near certain, since we don't take any commission.

btw - i bought blackmoon ftp 2 years ago, and then it was $70 instead of $40 (although they gave me a good student discount), so the price has come down, even while they have continued to improve the program and continued to provide lifetime upgrades.

let me explain why i htink this would be a good snack.

my windows xp environment path is too long.

thank you bill gates for putting much too short limits on it. the madness never ends.

so i'm constantly having to watch it and remove stuff and worry about removing something i might later need.

so having a nice safe way to add stuff, disable stuff, and always making sure never to lose anything permanently, would be good even for me who is comfortable changing such stuff manually.

ok i  uploaded a new versio which fixes the seconds rollover..
i will add right click options to the window later, and maybe some other stuff.

37257
hahahaahaha ok i see, its not rolling over the seconds :)
ok ill fix right now.

sounds good - and especially if bftpd wins best ftp server then that would be fantastic.

also looks like DesktopX might be good for corral type stuff: http://www.stardock....dxconfig/desktop.htm

i will keep trying to fix the desktop icons issue..
i have solved half of the problem (the click through issue), but desktop icons are still invisible.
if i can get that to work, i will release a new version which lets you set all 4 borders without multiple instances.

works great for me!! awesome.

ah i didnt read closely enough, i guess most of the apps i know are date calculators rather than time calculators..
but it looks like you found a nice one.  let us know if it turns out to be missing any key features.

Living Room / Guide To ... (an idea)
« on: May 06, 2005, 08:02 AM »
If some of our memebrs had any interest in writing some long "how to" guides, i'd be delighted to set up a special section for them and provide web hosting, etc.

ie like "Guide To Setting Up Your Own Web Server", etc.  anything to do with software.

there's no point in us reproducing what already exists, so we'd only want to make a how to do something if it was a better guide than could be found elsewhere, so we'd only want really comprehensive friendly guides with lots of pictures, etc.  kind of a tall order, but let me know if you are interested.

another alternative would be just a page or section of the forum where we could collect links to the Best offsite How To Guides relating to software...

does ai roboform live in the tray? i am one of those ai roboform lovers also. but its not in my tray.  maybe its an option.

there was a time when i used to try to keep my system tray empty, to maximize pc performance.
but then i thought WTF am i paying for this fast cpu for and wasting all my time idleing, i rather have a tray full of fun stuff :)

there are quite a few of these already, and they are indeed very useful.
can't remember any names though..  maybe snapfiles freeware search or nonags freeware will turn up something.
see the donationcoder.com links page for links: https://www.donation...com/Links/index.html

the use of programs with no gui in windows is very popular in alternate universe #992X3, but here in this universe i think it's kind of insane, especially for something like an ftp server with so many options.

revising my list of must-have features for an ftp server:
1) ability to specify passive host ip and ports for working with routers (do they all do this now?)
2) ssl support (sftp support?)
3) ability to view HISTORY of activities
4) easy ability to add/modify users and indicate which directories they have access to; easy for me to set a specific home dir for ftp users.
5) good security.

as a side note, one of the tricky things when writing the reviews is how to consider price.
on one hand, i tend to think of the reviews/awards as being for the best app, regardless of price.
but on the other hand, price plays a part when considering whether to recommend a program.
in general i think that the more expensive a program is relative to its competitors, the bigger the hurdle it has to overcome.
so if the best ftp server is $999 and the 2nd best is $20, and the second best is only missing some fairly trivial stuff, then i think the $20 app deserves the nod.

even outside of choosing the winner, price effects how much time to spend in the alternate programs section.
if the best ftp server is clear and far above the rest, and is also the cheapest, then very little time is needed in the alternate programs section.
but if there is a very close tie among top contenders, and they are all similarly priced and expensive, then considerable time should be spent discussing alternatives and opensource/free versions.

i'm really looking forward to the review - let us know how we can help.

nice screenshot :)
always a big pleasure for me when i see how people use my programs :)

i could probably set up multiple forms to allow multiple corals (corrals), but my failure to be able to put desktop shortcuts in the coral area is making me have bad feelings about desktop coral..

there are other programs that are similar in function to coral, but work in completely different way, they sit in background and watch windows and force them outside of certain regions.  the idea is similar though the method is different.  the advantange of the other way is that desktop shortcut icons work fine in the other method, and they have a nice way of forcing some applications into some regions.

darn i lost the link to the one i found recently.. anyone know of any of these? i'll keep looking and post when i find..
i'd be curious to know if these other apps are better to use than desktop coral..  if not i will keep working or desktop coral.

here's something that made me laugh out loud.  keep in mind im a registered owner of blackmoon ftp.
but when you ftp to blackmoon ftp server, here is what you see:

]Connecting to ftp.blackmoonftpserver.com
] Connected to ftp.blackmoonftpserver.com Port 21
] 220 Serv-U FTP-Server v2.5n for WinSock ready...

ROFL

i think this is something that can be implemented in coding snacks if it doesnt already exist.

a tray based tool that shows you all your printers in a menu and lets you change new default printer.

shareware to do this:
http://www.southbayp....com/PrinterExpress/

so my question is, is there a freeware to do this already? if not i'll write it.

37274
i'd love to see someone come up with a game that can be programmed in a day.
Especially one which made use of external data files that could be written by users. A good example of this would be a trivia game, or hangman, where the core game engine is simple, and other users can make data files containing trivia questions or hangman words+phrases.

I'd love to have some suggestions for some new creative ideas for a fun game that had a very simple engine but could be greatly expanded by user-written data files.

37275
i could use some feedback.. is timer showing for people?
