I'm surprised nobody has mentioned http://www.backpackit.com/ or http://www.rememberthemilk.com yet...

Check those out if you're into web-based apps :)

Oh yeah.. one thing that keeps driving me nuts are the columns when looking at reports. There is no way to auto-size them and every time I open a new report I always manually have to resize the columns to make the data look good in the display... it's SO annoying and yet it would be such an easy fix...

After using Quicken 2006 Deluxe for a while.. I find myself more and more confused as time goes by. It's a very powerful application and certainly an invaluable tool in the right thands.. I'm just afraid that mine aren't the right hands :/. What's the whole deal with categories vs. classes? In Quicken's help files classes are described as the latest way of organizing expenses and how they are much more flexible than categories.. and yet in the main UI of Quicken it's all categories! All over the place.. I see no easy way to work with collections. Quicken could really benefit from using something like Microsoft's ribbon.. the awesome feature from Office 2007. Why? Because Quicken's UI simply is too busy for my taste.. for example.. why should I have to look at the tax features on top all the time? The investment features? Those are things I NEVER use. It should all be context sensitive, a la ribbon :)

Anyway.. Quicken still is the most powerful and probably best money managing app out there, despite its shortcomings.

General Software Discussion / Re: FeedDemon changes?
« on: May 13, 2006, 06:41 PM »
Thank you, zridling! Seriously.. on the website, where I would MOST EXPECT it, there not only is no changelog, there is not even a single word about where I might find it, ANYWHERE. I would never have had a clue that it's stored in FD's folder.. I mean.. WHO DOES THAT?!? On the blog.. that makes sense.. but I didn't even find a link to the blog on the Newsgator website.. maybe I was just blind. I'll check again. Still.. it's the product's website and the product's website should have the product's changelog on there.. not Brad's blog.. then again perhaps Newsgator wants to manage the Newsgator site and told Brad to leave his fingers off of it and use his blog for whatever he has to say :)

General Software Discussion / FeedDemon changes?
« on: May 12, 2006, 01:34 PM »
What's up with Newsgator dumbing down their website so much? The site does a great job "luring in" users to buy the product.. but other than that it seems useless. Where are the changelogs? Two new builds of FeedDemon were released this week and I'm installing them not knowing about a single thing that changed... anyone know where I can find the changelogs, if at all?

I'm still very much in love with SVS :). Nothing wrong here, but then again I have not uninstalled it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Do you use RSS feeds?
« on: May 08, 2006, 03:19 AM »
Right now I'm using RSS only for podcasts for my iPod. (Before anyone freaks - The iPod isn't that bad... it's iTunes that could use some help.)

I'm also using custom XML feeds for GDT, my MP3 player software for musicians. XML is just so amazing to work with. *.gdt song configuration files are all just XML.

I've seen a few people post about RSS readers, but can anyone recommend anything that's top notch? I really don't like to fiddle too much with software and prefer that things just work easily. Most often I don't even need that much power from a lot of software. So anything decent that will work and let me configure things nicely would be perfect.

Yes -  I'm being lazy - Just no time to fiddle. I prefer recommendations to start with as opposed to trying out 50 different things...

I swear by FeedDemon. It isn't free, but I'll be damned if it isn't the best feed reader in existence. A good free one is GreatNews Newsreader, though I do not like it nearly as much as I like FeedDemon. If you'd like to stay free, however, GreatNews is a very good option. If you use Thunderbird for email, it can handle newsfeeds as well. I used it for quite a while that way and loved it, but of course it would not survive a comparison to any serious, real feedreader. Or, use Firefox, as bliss said above.

I use Feed Demon for my feeds and use it daily, don't know how I managed before I got it.

It's the best. By far. I tried out so many different readers and in the end simply came back to FeedDemon.

I finally was able to install SVS and fell in love with it. It's pretty amazing! Applications installed into virtual layers perform, as far as I can tell, equally fast and well as applications actually installed to the system. It really is impressive. I still have a lot of testing to do, but so far I just love it :)

I use Total Uninstall 3.61 and Your Uninstaller! Pro 2006 in tandem. They work great when used together, although over time, my "fear" of Total Uninstall's power has grown. It just seems like it catches a ton of things I'd rather it didn't catch, and I have not yet learned just how to teach it what I would like it to monitor and what I would like it to skip. In its preferences, TU does allow for such discrimination by letting the user alter scanning and comparing modes, but I never really understood how those exclusion mechanisms work. For example, that's the difference between the "exclude" fields in the scanning portion of the program... and the comparison portion? I meant, for a long time, to make a post about this on Martau's forums, but never remembered to do so. Perhaps I will sometime soon.

I've been with both applications for quite a while now and remember how terribly excited I was after the release of Total Uninstall 3. I was even in email contact with Martau himself, suggesting, among other things, that he put a forum on the site because a program as powerful and as complex as TU surely warrants one. And he went and did it and put a forum on the site. Great stuff! He is a very talented developer and updates to TU have been fairly frequent. You never get a sense that TU has become abandonware in any way. It's great to know there is a solid community and a great developer behind a product you use. Now it's up to me to make use of the community :)

As for Your Uninstaller!, the story is similar, minus the email exchange, and, well, minus the relatively frequent updates. Your Uninstaller! is updated next to never. But the latest version of it works very well and I've grown to trust it. I usually follow up uninstallations that I suspect may have left behind a mess by running JV16 Powertools' registry cleaner, just to be sure. It works great when combined with the other mentioned tools. As I have said, I recently have not used TU too much. I'd like to learn more about it before I use it to uninstall software again. This is not to say that TU has ever caused problems with my system, which really it never has. It's just that I'd like to learn a little bit more about just how it works before I want to let it rip away at my data again :)

My latest golden find, through Lifehacker, as always, was Altiris' Software Virutalization Solution. That's revolutionary in terms of software testing. I'm still in love with it and am now wondering if I could run just about everything virtualized! Just imagine.. nothing you install and use even affects your system file or registry structure in any way.. that's pretty amazing. Of course you need to set it up so you can save files and setting generated by that software.. but aside from that, it's a beautiful concept. And no, I'm not realistically considering this.. but it sure is tempting :)

Just found a great article for the curious. In case you're wondering what this thing is all about, check this out: http://blog.pcmag.co.../2006/04/03/865.aspx

It's incredible how lively the community behind this tool is. There's a whole blog dedicated to it with all sorts of useful information. I'm trying to find help there for my problem now... http://juice.altiris.com/svs

113
I want to install Altiris but it simply won't work. I got the 2.0 personal edition both from the PCMag article and from here. When I start the installer it works just fine and I get through the first three steps.. but the moment I click the NEXT button that is supposed to start the actual file-copying and all, the installer window just disappears and nothing else happens. No error message, no warning, no nothing. Maybe I'm not running a required service or something? What's up?

I REALLY want to install this :(

I use Rojo.com for my RSS feeds and I will often get duplicate entries. Sometimes where there was a spelling correction/change in the title.

But sometimes I'd get several of the same entries from one source, usually Joystiq, like they don't post enough already. It's terrible to have 100 new articles but each one from Joystiq has seven duplicates.

I don't have a solution. I'm just letting you know that it isn't limited to FeedDemon.
I appreciate you sharing that information. Rojo.com is extremely impressive, I must admit. The "today" page was loaded with super interesting stuff when I went there just now. Sweet link! Thanks. And it's good--or, well, bad, if you think about it--to know that this is an issue related directly the architecture of feeds rather than my particular feedreader. Thanks for confirming that suspicion as well. Guess there really IS nothing we can do. The only solution is for the RSS/Atom standards to be updated in such a way that each feed entry can unmistakably and uniquely uniquely be identified.

General Software Discussion / Re: Google Calendar LAUNCHED!
« on: April 21, 2006, 08:04 PM »
I use Thunderbird + the new calendar extension Lightning 0.1 with it. It was super easy to import my Google Calendar but when I add a new event in Thunderbird, it is not reflected in GCal. Now THAT would rock. To have the two of them be completely synced up!

116
From Newsgator's Knowledge Base: INF: FeedDemon is displaying duplicates of many news items. Why?

But there is no solution there. Then again, there may be no solution to this problem... period. But that's why I'm asking here. Anyone know more about this and what I could do to solve the problem, if anything?

I meant to say that new isn't always better, but with technology it often is. For example, given the way cars are built, I'd take a 2006 Volvo over '67 Ford Mustang any day. (The Mustang doesn't have a built-in calculator on the back side of the window visor.)
WTF? Sweet! Link? :p

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Tweak Tool?
« on: April 17, 2006, 07:50 PM »
...TuneUp Utilities 2006 as well. Most of you must have heard of it before. While it's great for what it does, it's pretty obvious its target user audience are clueless computer users who find themselves right at home with the pretty colors and nice icons and the easy interface. It's Windows tweaking--the Fisherprice way.

Tia, you totally dissed TuneUp Utilities!
  — Of course it's pretty.
  — Of course you have to click-thru too many screens.
  — Of course it's overpriced.
  — Of course some of its features are miscategorized.
But it works, and that's what I care about. TuneUp's Registry cleaner is also one of the safest around. TuneUp also lets you control Explorer in ways few other tweaking tool allow. The best asset of TuneUp Utilities is that it's easy to find things. Unlike X-Setup Pro, which is mainly a telephone book-list of tweaks, I can navigate to something quickly. I won't say Tuneup is the best. Never. Check out XP Smoker Pro. I think you might like its raw power.
I didn't mean to diss it. It's very popular AND good. Its interface always made sense to me and I will even go as far as to say that I disagree with all your listed criticisms of it :). That is,
  • I don't think you have to click through too many screens. It's just right and the various screens and the ways to get there never struck me as annoying or cumbersome.
  • The price is debatable. I guess you can say it's somewhat overpriced. $29 would be about right in my book. $40 is a bit hefty for a tuning utility, but I suppose you also pay for the product's outstanding stability, ease of use, prettiness and the fact that it simply works. I don't know how many tweaking utilities there are out there where applied tweaks actually won't do anything, which renders the last point made in the sentence preceding this one somewhat pointless, but you get my point, I think.
  • Are they? I never noticed any miscategorized features. What drove me nuts about X-Setup is that some tweaks were listed twice, some even thrice, in various categories, just because they could be categorized equally well under those varying categories. That's really not how you want to go about that problem. Either describe the categories better to avoid running into this problem altogether, or then simply pick one, and don't sow the tweaks all over the place like trees do, with tree jizz, in spring.

What I've been using recently is WinXP Manager. It's very powerful, though its organization could use a TON of improvement. It could also have better descriptions of its tweaks and what they do. Roughly speaking, it is well organized, but it feels like the developers had too many ideas in too short a stretch of time, and then decided to throw the tweaks all in there. I may post some screenshots of examples in a bit. Still, it's very powerful, and one particular feature that's AMAZING and that I have found nowhere else, in no other tweaking utility to date, is this: after you a apply a tweak in most tweaking utilities that directly affects the Windows Explorer engine, the utility will tell you that a reboot to the system is required for the tweak to take effect. Not WinXP Manager. It automatically kills, then restarts explorer.exe and makes it possible to avoid reboots! Some tweaks, I suppose, do require reboots no matter what, but those that can be avoided by restarting the explorer.exe process ARE avoided with WinXP Manager. Very cool :)

I've heard of WinXP Smoker many times before but never was curious enough to check it out. I'll see if I can change that.

LOL - only to patch problems that have existed for many years ... some of your OS will date back over 20 years!
-Carol Haynes (April 15, 2006, 04:28 AM)
Of course. But who says the things usually patched in software are only those related to code most recently added to the application?

Holy fuck it really ROCKS. I found about it just an hour ago or so and holy crap.. I'm impressed. The timing of this was amazing as I just spent the last week looking for the perfect PIM--unsuccessfully. This is SO COOL! I too noticed that Opera is not fully supported :(.. but in Firefox it works BEAUTIFULLY. I have to see if it will work in Opera if I ignore the compatibility warning... somehow I don't want to push my luck though. It's good to know the application is fully and officially compatible with Firefox and IE. Guess I'll be using Firefox more often now.. at least until there is official Opera support :P

It may just be me.. but I simply refuse to use software that is based on code that is by now over five years old

I can almost guarantee that the OS you're using runs on code that is much older than five years.  Ever think about that?  =]
I didn't think about it, but my reply is this: my OS was updated three days ago :)

a side question: is moerl trying to win a contest for most words in one post without a line break?
lol.. yeah, sorry about that one. I just somehow felt like it really was all one paragraph because everything that was said in it was related. Oh well.

I do like the idea of being able to just type in whole strings for calculation without being limited to the software calculator behaving like a hardware calculator in clearing the display each time an operation button is pressed... one of the calcs on the Great Software List behaves that way, I believe. I'll have to see. I don't have any very specific or special needs... it's just the obsession of using the perfect tool for the job :)

Also, I just dislike using software that has not been updated in a long time or for which development may even have seized. In very rare cases I make an exception, (Trillian), but usually that's how I think about it. I guess it's true that with calculator software, you reach a point where you've made it perfectly stable and there is nothing more to add.. but then nothing is perfect. No updates in over two YEARS is a bit scary, no matter how stable and reliable an application.

125
i'm glad to see that things picked up while i was not around. amazingly, it was solved in just 4hrs 45mins... ;)
i think now is a good time to move this topic to "Finished Programs" on Coding Snacks.

...but when I right-click the desktop and choose NEW SHORTCUT the window that appears asks me for the file's location to which I want to create a shortcut. I can't just drop the code in that line :/

microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, have disabled the right-click menu in the "New Shortcut" dialog but you can press Control-V to paste the command. since you have already have a working script, this is just some additional info for the future...
Nono.. I didn't mean that. I know the paste command, of course, and never use the mouse. I meant that the dialog that shows up does not accepts commands. It wants a file path for the file you want to create the shortcut for. I did try pasting the command and clicking next and it just told me "Can't find file "Run"" or something like that, when "Run" was the first word of the command...
But yeah, the problem is solved. This is just a side discussion :)
