General Software Discussion / Re: Which is the real KMPlayer?
« on: October 28, 2010, 03:58 PM »
When removed, Revo found 35 registry items and 4 files, after Daum!

That's disappointing to hear. Since KMPlayer works just fine, I'm in no major hurry to update to PotPlayer.

Let's see if I have this straight (I kinda doubt it ). Daum PotPlayer 1.5.25231 Beta is the last released version while Daum PotPlayer 1.5.24134 Beta is the last announced version on the official site. Not to mention the x64 1.5.24134 version. Good grief, I sure wish this version page included dates; it would really help to clarify this PotPlayer mess.

musetips, have you considered supporting multiple text files?

If Text Filter could load more than a single file, then it could be utilized more like a search/grep tool. 8)

General Software Discussion / Re: remove objects from photos

Couple more removal type apps which might be of use to someone...

InstantMask is a freeware designed for removing backgrounds.

Wire Pilot/Wire Pilot Lite are designed to remove linear objects.

General Software Discussion / Re: SRWare Iron 5.0.380 beta browser
« on: October 26, 2010, 03:24 PM »
Yep, thanks for the update. 8)

btw the Iron site is in need of a makeover IMO; it's now been two years with the same boring layout.

In stark contrast to Firefox, Opera, etc., you have to read the small print (ie. Datum: 25.10.2010 Version: 7.0.520.0) to know about the new Iron version. And it's not even on the home page. Man, that's a subdued approach. Firefox and Opera will club you over the head with the latest news/version. ;)

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Rename Next
« on: October 25, 2010, 02:47 PM »
I'd love to see a program that on hitting the return key would then jump to the next file in the folder already in the rename function automatically.  If you hit enter without making a change the cycle would be ended.

Ken Rename has a manual rename mode which operates in the manner indicated. Certainly not the fastest way to rename files, but I've used it on rare occasion when I cannot figure out how to accomplish a renaming task with Renamer.

Another possibility could be Oscar's File Renamer, :-\ but I've not used that particular tool in many years.

Play it again, Sam. :D AJC Active Backup is scheduled at BDJ on 10-25-10.

Posterize is an interesting artistic effect.

A simple, useful, and portable app. 8)

Thanks a lot musetips.

J-Mac, sorry to hear of your troubles with BID--a 50% success rate seems inordinately low!

Unfortunately, some URLs can be difficult to decipher. I've contacted the author at least three times with request for help with a specific URL. On each occasion the "fix" was added to the next version's "include list". Not at all like dealing with Microsoft. ;)

136
Thanks for the link.
Not portable... And doesn't seem like it can do partial file updating, copy open files or detect renamed/moved files/folders though.

True, Bvckup is the more advanced tool in the respects you mention. Also, CopyTo has no realtime sync. No doubt, I remain very impressed with Bvckup's capabilities.

On the other hand, CopyTo Synchronizer can perform differential backup, incremental backup, and bidirectional synchronization.

I suppose it's a case of the right tool for the right job.

[edit: excepting renamed/moved files from the first sentence btw. ;) I realize Bvckup doesn't do that yet.]

137
CopyTo Synchronizer has apparently been around for years as shareware, but it was recently released as freeware (10-1-2010).

I've only used it for a short time, but it seems a very capable backup and sync tool. I particularly like the compact GUI and customizable preview window.

Definitely not a portable tool, but lots of features.

138
DriveGLEAM is another of these system info. utilities which reside in the system tray. It's been mentioned lately on several blogs such as freewaregenius.

Sorry I've not yet tried it myself (at work atm).

139
Ah...text box you say? ;)  Good grief, I'm heading to the optometrist first thing tomorrow. ;D

Thanks Curt.

UltraSearch doesn't seem to update as fast as Everything when files get deleted, moved, renamed, etc. With Everything any changes show up instantaneously.

Nonetheless, as far as file finders go UltraSearch is a solid #2 IMO.

Now if I can just figure out how to add exclusions to the Exclude Filter tab (ie. the darn Add Pattern button won't activate?!).

141
Wow, you said "multi-functional" and you sure weren't kidding about that! Impressive number of tools packed into this Swiss Army knife utility. Just when I thought I'd seen all it had to offer, I would notice yet another interesting feature.

Very nice--congrats to you on this useful software. 8)

I only have one questions: how do you pronounce the name?  :D "bvackup"? "bee-vee-cup"?

I thought it would simply be pronounced as 'Backup' - that the 'v' is just like an upside-down 'A'

I think the upside down v is the Greek letter delta. So "bee-delta-cup"...uh maybe not. :-\

@apankrat: thanks for the details on the config files. You might consider making the "Configuration and Logging folder" movable via the GUI itself. Right now there's only the Open button but perhaps Browse, Move etc. would be much more convenient for the average computer user.

143
So far I don't have a compelling need for versioning, but fine by me if Bvckup adds that functionality. 8)

FWIW I've found the following Time Machine related apps in addition to what you've mentioned (ie. Oops! and AutoVer).

CascadePoint (free)
http://www.jpsoft.co.../cascadepointdes.htm

TimeTraveler ($19.95)
http://www.bearsontheloose.com/

Wondershare Time Shuttle ($49.95) claims system restore and file recovery.

Note I'm making no endorsements/recommendations, just passing along the info in case you wanted to explore further.

Hi, just a couple of questions...

(1) Are Bvckup's cache/database files (ie. in the configuration and logging folder) essential to the operation of the program? AFAICT they must be used for Bvckup to function properly; I can't see how to opt-out of their usage.

(2) Has there been any consideration of an option for direct comparison of files (ie. no reliance on database)? I realize this would likely be a slower method, but I'm just curious.

Regards

Dude, you've got too much free time. ;D

Just kidding, Armando--very nice work indeed! Thanks for taking the time to report your findings.

apankrat, congrats on your software. :) I've been using Bvckup for a short time and am quite content with it.

I think many more folks will be using Bvckup as it becomes more well-known. It surely deserves recognition as the excellent program it is.

Good luck to you.

Hi kyrathaba, thanks for the link. I'm interested in similar image related apps.

I knew about Gazopa and TinEye but haven't used them in some time.

When I last checked, TinEye performed the best for me (ie. most accurate) but I suppose individual results will vary. In the past these online image tools haven't been very reliable, but they continue to improve each year.

I will check some of the other tools mentioned in the comments. Thanks again. :)

148
I think the question is becoming quite academic, this optimizer lacks some major features...

Ah, that's surprising System Mechanic would have such feature limitations. All iolo's proprietary, new and improved, patent-pending tech talk (aka marketing mumbo-jumbo ;)) cannot substitute for the problems you have mentioned.

I also cannot understand why subsequent optimizations should take as long as the initial optimization. :tellme: I would think a defragger's optimization scheme would be implemented on the first run, and then only maintenance (ie. much less file movement) would be required. Yet I keep seeing these defraggers which act like they've never been to the party before.

149
ha14, thanks for telling.

Seems Keriver 1-Click Restore is a new and interesting software. And the $10 price is certainly enticing.

150
I stick to LOCATE.

serach everything doesn't have any interface to allow you to select a folder .... you have to type it in as far as I know. This greatly decreases it's uslefulness to me

Yep, same here. In Locate32 I have presets for Music Collection, Picture Collection, Video Collection, etc.

Works well when you want to narrow the search and not see everything.
