DC Gamer Club / Steel Storm 1 indie arcade shooter
« on: November 06, 2010, 07:25 PM »
Steel Storm- Episode 1 is available for download (265 MB). It is described as an indie Top-Down arcade shooter for the Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.

http://www.steel-storm.com/
- Deathmatch and coop game modes;
- Exploration and time-trial gameplay types;
- Competition driven gameplay - master your skills to stay ahead;
- Intelligent AI knows no mercy;
- Hordes of enemies to destroy;
- Vast numbers of destroyable structures and obstacles;
- Huge territories to reclaim;
- 6 missions of various difficulty, for beginners & hardcore gamers, coop oriented;
- Edit or create your own missions with SandStorm in-game realtime multi-user editor.

Looks like Episode 2 will be a commercial project. I personally don't have much time to game anymore so I cannot comment on the quality of this game. I only mention it for the benefit of those who might be interested.

General Software Discussion / Anybody know Depeche View?
« on: November 04, 2010, 03:39 PM »
I have several search tools which can search inside text files, but I was looking around for an alternative when I found this...

Depeche View is a portable app which can perform realtime text search on multiple files.
http://stahlworks.co...ev/depeche-view.html
Depeche View loads all text files from a folder, showing all content in one window. It is used to search, analyze and edit huge amounts of text (source code, CSV data, log files or documentation) at high speed with the smallest possible effort. Portable executable, try the freeware edition without installation!

Version differences are provided on this page; the Extended Edition is priced at $19.90.

I've just started tinkering with the free version (aka Depeche View Base). I'm impressed so far--darn useful app!  8) Anybody know Depeche View?

Found Deals and Discounts / GAOTD Wondershare Time Freeze 2.0
« on: August 25, 2010, 07:23 PM »
Today's (8-25-10) Giveaway Of The Day is Wondershare Time Freeze 2.0-- a system virtualization software regularly priced at $39.00.

http://www.giveawayo...are-time-freeze-2-0/
Wondershare Time Freeze 2.0 is easy and effective virtual system software. It creates a virtual environment for your system partition, on which you surf online, run applications and test game installations. All changes (computer history, new installations, infected virus) occur on the virtual system will disappear. So your real system is protected and your privacy is safe and can’t be peeped by others.

Succeeded the easiness and effectiveness of 1.0 version, Time Freeze 2.0 adds support to 64-bit OS, enhanced MBR protection, adds Physical Memory Buffer mode which speeds up virtual system performance at 60%. The improved GUI also brings you better using experience.

It takes 2 clicks to enable virtual system protection. And when you return to the real system, you have the flexibility to save or discard virtual system data. Use it together with antivirus software to safeguard your computer!

I tried the free version of this program some while back, but I experienced some GUI issues and I couldn't activate the system protection.

If anybody has impressions/opinions on this software, please post 'em here. Gotta go...the clock is ticking.  ;)

General Software Discussion / Mouse Jiggler
« on: August 25, 2010, 03:57 PM »
Mouse Jiggler is a free and tiny Codeplex utility which some users may find useful.

http://mousejiggler.codeplex.com
Project Description:
Mouse Jiggler is a very simple piece of software whose sole function is to "fake" mouse input to Windows, and jiggle the mouse pointer back and forth.

Useful for avoiding screensavers or other things triggered by idle detection that, for whatever reason, you can't turn off any other way; or as a quick way to stop a screensaver activating during an installation or when monitoring a long operation without actually having to muck about with the screensaver settings.

Requirements:
Requires .NET Framework 2.0, nothing else.

I'm not usually interested in a contest type of giveaway because I figure the odds of winning are not that great.

However, I think Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder (VSDIF) is a quality software so I will post about this particular contest running from August 11-20.

To win a copy of VSDIF visit this site and...
1. Just leave a comment.
2. Use valid email ID in the email box.
3. Not necessary, but you can subscribe to our rss feed and follow us on twitter as well. (To track this contest and for future updates)
4. And thats it!

For those who aren't interested in contests, take note VSDIF is currently priced at $24.95 (quite reasonable IMO).

General Software Discussion / ArtSee is now ArtSage
« on: August 02, 2010, 01:51 PM »
I just noticed my favorite slideshow app ArtSee has now become ArtSage. It's still a brilliant portable tool, and the author has added some features.

The only negative is that there are so many settings that it takes a while to get it configured just right (OK, I'm picky ;D). I prefer to see each image in all its fullscreen glory, and ArtSage will allow me to do that.

http://www.xworks.ca/artsage/index.html
ArtSage is freeware. If you like the program, please consider making a donation. Make a donation of any amount and receive ArtSage Pro, with an active catalog that supports shell operations (drag/drop, cut/copy/paste, shell menu) for file management.

Regards.

I found this little free and portable benchmark tool named QwikMark. If there are any benchmarkers smaller than this little sucker, I've not seen 'em.

Even though I have a reasonably decent computer, I like small (and hopefully portable) system tools like QwikMark. If you know of any, please post 'em.

Antibody Software's Bulk Image Downloader (BID) is normally priced at USD $29.95. Currently it's offered for USD $19.95--a savings of 33%.

http://antibody-soft...re.com/web/index.php

If I weren't already a satisfied customer, I would definitely jump at this opportunity because BID is one of my most frequently used programs.

If anybody is curious about BID customer support, I can tell you it's excellent. I have emailed the author on numerous occasions to ask questions and/or make requests, and he has never failed to respond in a professional manner.

General Software Discussion / File Renaming question
« on: January 04, 2010, 02:38 PM »
I need help to increment/decrement file names ranging from 7001-7100. Note that I don't have a complete continous set of 7001-7100 but only have some of the files (ie. 7005, 7006, 7009, 7012...).

I like and use both ReNamer and Ken Rename. In both apps there is a serialize mode which allows the user to start at a specific number and then sequence from there, but AFAIK that only works if there is a continuous set of files.

All I want to accomplish is to leave what I already have and decrement everything by a value of 1. So for example, decrementing 7005 becomes 7004, 7012 becomes 7011, etc.

Does anybody know how to accomplish this task with any software? btw I know I can do it manually one file at a time but that takes lots of time when dealing with many files.

General Software Discussion / .flv thumbnails
« on: September 24, 2009, 10:53 PM »
Greetings, folks. I have some .flv video files which do not display thumbnails in WinXP or in other software like XnView or FastStone Image Viewer. Does anybody know how to get .flv to render thumbnails? Or is it ill-advised to do this? As always, thanks for your assistance.
