screen capture by key-stroke (not mouse) shows fingers in WinSnap

Do other programs do the same?

I am working with a pop-up part of a web-sire, the corrections of the transcription at:
https://codexsinaiti...g/en/manuscript.aspx

So I want the “capture” to be by key-stroke, but no pointer fingers/hand showing

Which programs do that?
Or maybe a feature in WinSnap.

I can add a picture if needed.

Using
Xenforo as my research forum
Box.com as my main long term file holder (have experience with Drivehq, Google Docs, etc.)
Linode as my host. (So even with a lot of pictures and space it is $25 a month.)
Gentleman in Germany as my excellent, occasional support.  He set up the Xenforo on Linode, I had left vBulletin.

We expect some downloads of our work here as explained in the first post:

Borislav Borisov - Bulgarian paper - epigraphy, graphology, palaeography, codicoligy, calligraphy
https://www.purebibl...gy-calligraphy.3023/

The first post explains what we are doing.
The files go a long way to showing that Codex Sinaiticus is not an ancient 4th century manuscript.

Please feel free to read and give feedback.

When there is a download, it would be nice to capture some information about who is doing the download.
Name, email address, any comments, etc.  (At the moment I am simply using Gmail Contacts as my main contact PIM.)
Without being too obstructive.

Any improvements you can suggest?
Anything better than Box.com?

Downloads will likely be in the dozens, or possibly hundreds, over April and May.
And we may add other files.

Would prefer not to do any programming at this time.
Not sure if Xenforo has any plug-ins that might help, but prefer to keep it vanilla.

Thanks!

Steven

General Software Discussion / short papers for Academia.edu
« on: November 26, 2022, 09:38 PM »
Making some short Bible related papers to place on Academia.edu and to make available on forums.  Usually I write on my forum, www.purebibleforum.com but that is not quasi-academic style.

And I like Atlantis word processor, right now I am inquiring about quote boxes and paragraph formatting.  It does look like it has areas like footnoting built in nicely.

An alternative is PDF. I have Soda PDF Desktop 10 and getting PDF XChange Viewer for another reason.  I don't mind paying a bit for the best Editor that does not take me into Acrobat land.

I think my basic question is .. Word Processor or PDF maker.
And which tool?

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / make scan PDF into text searchable PDF
« on: September 19, 2022, 05:24 PM »
Hi Forum!

Trying to do a 20 megabyte scanned book.

Once I did a book with PDF2GO, but the online tools all seem to have limits or glitch out on memory or something.

Willing to buy Shareware if need be.
Wondershare PDFElement will not do that feature in shareware mode and the cost is about $100 depending on license.
Willing to do it but only if there are not good alternatives.

My Acrobat Reader is great for reading PDFs but does not have that feature.
Similar with my Soda PDF Desktop

Your thoughts?

Thanks!

Should be simple, right?

Greetings.

RIght now I am creating an expense ledger, needs a few fields like project, account, amt, date, note, with the ability to total. Maybe it will expand to link to external 'files'.  This could be a Windows program like Listpro, GS-Base, Filemaker, etc.  Or online like Airtable.  Or bring your own server like MYSQL programs.

There are various levels where this can be done.

Zoho Creator even has an expense ledger template, and you probably can go fairly far free. So far I enjoy it the most, as simplest to run and go.

Correction:  It is AIRTABLE that has a nice starting Expense Ledger.

Hi,

Windows 10
For a new house-flip business (and maybe for publishing on some Bible issues) we are back to desktop publishing. In the flip business I want to do stuff like add one page for each house that we buy, or make a bid. Showing stuff from Zillow, my own pic, and some added text.

Serif PagePlus is end of life.  Microsoft Publisher has the name Microsoft. Scribus might be too arcane for my use.  Maybe Broderbund from antiquity is still in the mix for simple stuff?

What do you use and like? Microsoft Publisher? Adobe InDesign? I'll register a good one.
Which ones were just too frustrating?

My biz partner in Oro Valley is saying goodbye to a couple of older puters, hopefully he can reinstall the OS (good to keep images) but their value is minimal anyway, a few years old, maybe one is 7, one is 10.

Two new HP i5 puters with SSD being installed, one from Craigslist, one from Best Bay (open box, big savings). Total cost $950.

So how does he get the new puters loaded with his biz stuff?

1) some automated way from Windows

2) simply reinstall the programs, and bring over any necessary data by hand (I usually use a USB backup or DriveHQ as the intermediary)

3) some other way.

=======================

He is concerned about the time involved in (2), but that is generally my recommended way.  Then I can reconsider each program, and not bring over junkaroony (programs, registry entries, etc.

I tried one called Thin-Print from Cortado Mobile Solutions.

Simple free App install.  Two little installs on the Windows 10 (the second is a connector.)

Tried it out, worked perfectly. Printed from the picture roll.

Yes, there are tons of alternatives, maybe more sophisticated, but sometimes they are frustrating.  This was very pleasant.
eprint, google cloud print, HP Smart, Readdle or others. Some cost money, some are vanishing.  I do plan to try HP Smart.

Living Room / where to buy a new puter? some style and spec issues
« on: November 20, 2019, 05:26 AM »
My main PC should be reasonably fast, used for business, Bible research, daily this and that.
It should have robust memory and related stacks for many browsers (yes, Onetab) and programs open.
No gaming, but lots of multi-tasking.
No laptop.

Windows 10 Pro (alternatives that will run my Windows programs well?  Windows 7??)
256 SSD (maybe 512)
1 Terabyte Disk is nice, but not necessity - maybe simply 512 SSD es suficiente
16 GB memory
Speedy Gonzalex processor and decent Graphics
chips are complex, since you have the i5 i7 i9, and various models, and AMD - this will probably be i7

It looks like the Dell Refurbs, and some HP are good deals through:

PC Mag
New Egg
Overstock (good variety)
Dell (if real special)

I also might want to check the good old PowerSpecs from Microcenter.
Probably pass on TigerDirect, Amazon, Ebay

Do you get a 3-year warranty for $50 ?  True, these are not printers, not much goes wrong.

The SFF, Mini, Tower, etc questions is a puzzle. I don't mind the Tower for long-term expansion and simplicity. If I have an SFF I could take it on a trip. I have one that is a few years old, Lenovo, maybe that is the one I would take.

Spiceworks good conversation in 2018, note the HP Mini got a solid nod
https://community.sp...-fixes-pros-and-cons

It looks like I want to spend $400-500 on the Black Friday specials, although if there was a reason I would go more. Gaming stuff is often in the 700-1000 range, but that has its own graphics specialties.

======

And do I want a separate Linux box for fun and play?  I do have a real old one, about 5+ years old. I probably should play with that one first (cost about $25, Craigslist)

Tablets - got my iPad  as the main one. Pretty happy there, know how to buy on Craigslist when needed.  Generally people want too much on Craigslist, but since Apple does not discount much, that is an exception. In the Android world, I am always wondering about playing with something like the Google Pixel, but the Apple iPad seems sufficient. Smooth.

Chromebook - a 4GB one for $100, new or refurb, might make sense. Maybe take in car. There are times where it might be more appropriate than the Tablet.

From WordPress / Woo Commerce I would like to shell out (call a subroutine) and do some comparison-calc logic.  This is to determine if an item is subject to sales tax. The product (item) will have some Y/N flag fields, and these will be compared to the 50 states, (+DC, maybe PR) to see if that item is sales tax liable in that state.   There will not be 50 sections, since some states are identical (e.g. about 10 have no sales tax for these products), maybe there will be 25 separate logic sections. Each section will have maybe 5-10 lines of code. I can supply the logic, and maybe do the code.

For speed, and confidentiality, it would be nice to be compiled.

What tool should be used?

Presumably reasonably English simple-style, for long-term maintenance:
(If State=FL and Field-Kruggerand=Y evaluate SST=Y and Goto End)

Your thoughts?
This might also be a gig :).

SST=StateSalesTax - a plug-in from a 3rd party knows the current rate from the address, which can include local city/town add-ons.

There are other complexities, especially with threshold levels, at the moment that is another story.

We also have wonderful complexities in pricing  :).

Redirection problems often occur after migrations.
My forum was migrated from vBulletin to Xenforo.
The vBulletin redirection add-on is no longer supported, and did not work for me.

My forum is like a research blog.
www.purebibleforum.com

Current Google searches are generally based on the old urls, and give:

==============

Not Found
The requested URL /showthread.php was not found on this server.
Apache/2.4.25 (Debian) Server at www.purebibleforum.com Port 443

==============

Over time, Google would likely catch up to the current forum, but it is unclear how long it would take, and when they would drop the invalid links. In the meantime, this makes Google and other search engines unusable, and this is very frustrating to those trying to use the forum material. Same with links that were placed on other groups and forums. (We are trying a special attempt to handle the internal links within the forum.

So the need, if it is possible, is for someone skilled with Apache with PHP and whatever is the skill-set to go in there and intercept those misses, and put up either the Xenforo front page, or, better yet, a special landing page that explains that we have redirected from the Google search. And inviting the user to search using the internal forum search (which might be enhanced by an add-on.)

In the best world, the parameters of the search would be passed, more or less, to the internal search, that is getting a bit more sophisticated, and may not be possible.

Please contact me if you think this is the type of (paid) project you could do and would like to do!

And feel free to discuss, improve and troubleshoot this idea on this thread as well. Also the whole world of forums and migrations.

As an aside, I remember we had someone do something on my WordPress business site where they bypassed the normal processes and put up a landing page, specialty, explaining that we were down for the day. (Sometimes there might even be a plug-in for that in WordPress.)

If you are involved in the Xenforo world, clearly that is a big plus, and could lead to more action. Or you might like understanding why it has become the go-to forum of choice for many.

The site is on Linode, on a VPS unmanaged server. Access will be fully available.

Your thoughts welcome!
And if you have a special spot where you think this might get a good response, share away.

Or any email (e.g. Runbox) to SMS.

Preferably an option to just send the Subject line.

Obviously, the sending should be based on a filter (e.g. something in the subject line, or address.)

An account with Twilio (or CloudHQ or RedOxygen or another) is ok, if the price is right.

Also, I would like it to go to my Talkatone account (about 1/2 of SMS recognize such an account, Twilio works fine.)
Or find another method - I can try Skype number - since my normal phone is a clamshell.

The goal is to get the SMS on an iPad.
Even an Android is possible, especially if gives a better alarm.

I will look for more references to place here:

General Software Discussion / forum software
« on: August 21, 2019, 08:49 AM »
I actually use a forum software, vBulletin, more as a blog than a forum.

Take a look.

Pure Bible Forum.
http://www.purebibleforum.com/

It seems to me that it sections out much better than a blog, and has nice ability to quickly put in pictures, change fonts, move posts, etc.
Granted it misses some of the blog niceties, ideally I would coordinate a blog with the forum.

vBulletin has not made everybody happy the last years, I am on V.4 and have no plans to go to V.5.  Yet I do occasionally run into glitches, one would lose data when a page would become white.  Usually a large overloaded thread with many pics.  That experience, which happened a few times and was difficult to troubleshoot, dampened my enthusiasm a bit.

So I may do the couple of hundred dollars and start Xenforo.  Then I actually would add features and plug-ins and perhaps build up a community of sorts.  I would like the Facebook sign-in, since I have many involved in Facebook, but that seems to not really function. Twitter sign-on is supposedly very good.

Then there is SMF and ElkeArte and such, Tuxman talked about them on another thread.  Less or no $, perhaps just as good in many ways.

And I may also use, separately, a forum as an adjunct to an e-commerce biz. (Precious metals.) There are many WordPress plugins that do forums, that are a bit rinnky-dink, that is another alternative. (We use WooCommerce under WordPress.)

Some of the other nouveau forums are here:
https://www.slant.co...elkarte-alternatives

Trying to get good SEO without a lot of time/money investment is one factor.

Your free-form thoughts welcome!

(I would keep vBulletin in its blog mode. It does many things very well.)

Most of my email play is on:

Verizon mail - grandfathered to AOL. (downloaded by POP)

Runbox (small account, downloaded by POP)

Various Gmail accounts that simply forward to the Verizon-AOL and then any deletion of the Gmail is at leisure, usage is mostly "that day" or if for some reason my home base client is less accessible. It does work well with my iPad .. especially the biz email, or resets of passwords, etc.

==================

Eudora 7, a fantastic email program, is hitting more modern encyrption demands like TSL 1.1 and 1.2.  This means that the original Eudora 7 download will, in some cases, (and increasing) not download mail.  The server will time out, or refuse the connection.

Hermes is a new project built on the Eudora source code, which Qualcomm, after some hesitation, nicely put into the public domain! The main purpose is to fix those areas, like encyrption and certificates, where Eudora might fail. E.g. specific .dlls might be replaced. Other things might be updated, like fonts or emojies.  It is unlikely that much of the core code would be rewritten, since the tools today are very different than 25 years ago.

(Penelope was a Thunderbird attempt to have a Eudora look-and-feel that went nowhere.)

Pandora is an excellent attempt to make a "Eudora-like" program by a gentleman named Brana. It can be discussed separately. Note that it has the potential to add some features, (e.g. virtual mailboxes would be possible, although I do not expect that they are currently on the road-map).  Feature improvements is very limited for Hermes, since the core code is Eudora.  However, it has recently become ready for prime-time.

And I mostly use Eudora and TheBat!, later in the thread I can explain why I use both.  And I also play with Pandora.

=================================

Quick mention of about ten other email programs.

Other less techie and robust alternatives include eM Client, the more Outlook-type program that some use. Claws Mail is another. Mailbird has proponents.  Postbox too. Thunderbird is still active. SeaMonkey is a minor player, also like Postbox built on Thunderbird. Outlook has its own world (and maybe PIM clones like Essential PIM?) em Client also compares themselves to Mail and LiveMail.

In somewhat of a purist email legacy mode we have Becky!, Pegasus and Poco-Barca, yet each one has its current situation.

I have tried many of these, and always come back to a Eudora-TheBat! world.

Information largely from the

Eudora for Windows forum (no archives, I am using my inbox)
http://www.listmoms.net/eudora-win/

Join this for any future updates.

Posts from Ken starting around Feb. 27, 2019.  Ken had improved the Hermes instructions.
(Also contributions from hoplist, Dave Andrews, and the super-helpful Katrina Knight.)

There is also a check that you have the proper "MS C ++ redistribution".

==================================Y

You can navigate to your Eudora program files folder and check the dates of libeay32.dll, QCSSL.dll, rootcerts.p7b, and ssleay32.dll.  If QCSSL.dll is dated any earlier than Oct. 29, 2018 (or if any of the other 3 files date earlier than Aug. 15, 2018), you don't have what you need to ensure Eudora is working with TLS 1.1 and 1.2, which are increasingly required by mail servers.

Here are some instructions for getting this updated library installed into your Eudora 7.1:

=======================

This is not complicated, simply explained step-by-step,

INSTRUCTIONS FROM JULY 19, 2019 TO MAKE AN EXISTING EUDORA INSTALL TSL-CERTIFICATE UPGRADED USING HERMES TECHNOLOGY

Although the developers working on Hermes haven't yet released that, they HAVE released an updated SSL library for Eudora that you can patch right into your existing copy of Eudora 7.1.  It will (1) resolve a lot of certificate problems, and (2) add support for TLS 1.1 and 1.2, which will keep Eudora working with mail servers that have dropped or will soon drop support for TLS 1.0.

(If you've been using the Stunnel tool specifically to get around this limitation, this updated SSL library will eliminate your need to use that.  It will add support for the missing protocols, while ensuring that everything about your data communication will remain encrypted.)

To install this updated SSL library into your existing Eudora installation:

(Use at your own risk: I am unaffiliated with the Hermes project, but merely a satisfied user trying to make things easier with these instructions.)

1) Download this ZIP file and extract it somewhere:  NOTE: If you downloaded this already but before Oct. 29, 2018, you'll need to download it again now, because the pre-Oct. 29th version wasn't fully functional.
   https://www.dropbox....f9w/HermSSL.zip?dl=1

2) Find your Eudora program files folder, via:
   - Eudora's top menu: Help -> About Eudora -> Click on the word "Application" above the "Visit Web Site" button.  This should launch a folder window with your Eudora program in it, which will include the "Eudora.exe" file.

3) Close the About Eudora box, and Quit Eudora

4) Make backup copies of these 4 files that are in your Eudora program files folder: libeay32.dll, QCSSL.dll, rootcerts.p7b, ssleay32.dll

5) Run vcredist.exe that you extracted in step 1.  You might already have a new enough version of this Microsoft library on your system, in which case it will tell you that and will abort.  That's fine: it means you already have the needed Microsoft library and can proceed to the next step.

6) Copy these new 4 files you extracted in step 1 (libeay32.dll, QCSSL.dll, rootcerts.p7b, ssleay32.dll) into your Eudora program files folder. You'll see they're from 2018 instead of 2006.

7) Start Eudora.

8 ) Attempt to retrieve email and send email with your personality/ies.  Most certificate errors should be gone, and sending and receiving should be functional.

9) Something not working?  Then check your incoming and outgoing mail settings:
   (Your main settings are under Tools->Options->"Checking Mail" and "Sending Mail".  They're additionally in each of your Personalities that you use to send and receive mail: Tools->Personalities, and then for each personality, right click, Properties, and look at both tabs "Generic Properties" and "Incoming Mail".)
   In each of those two places, look at the "Secure Sockets when Sending" / "Secure Sockets when Receiving" dropdown.  If you see "If Available, STARTTLS" or "Required, STARTTLS" in any of those places, some mail servers might need you to change those to "Required, Alternate Port".  If you try changing this, make note of the old setting, in case you need to change it back.
   Try retrieving and sending email again.

10) If you're using a server that has support for TLS 1.1 or 1.2, you can verify that Eudora is now using one of these: Go to each of the two places described in step 9 (i.e. in "Options" and/or as any Personality you've successfully connected with since restarting Eudora).  In each, press the button "Last SSL Info".  On the info window that pops up, find the "SSL version field".  You should see "TLSv1.2" or "TLSv1.1", instead of "TLSv1", which will confirm that the new libraries are now using the new protocols with those servers.

=======================

Sidenote:
A brand-new clean Eudora Install is said by Nicholas Edward Werner-Matavka of Hermes on July 25 to work - with this download:
https://sourceforge....rmsetup.exe/download
(In other words, the necessary file swaps are already included in this installer.)
Ted Walton and Katrina have discussions of using this method on August 5, especially if you are transferring over from one puter to another.

General Software Discussion / the power of Linkman
« on: July 20, 2019, 07:23 AM »
This was meant as a reply to Cyberdiva on another thread.

Pale Moon as my browser due to the wonderful extensions
https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=48093.0

However, let's keep it as its own. This has been by far the most valuable program I have used, without any real comparable alternative, imho.

=====================

Linkman gives full support.  And they are pretty robust in having a number of browsers built-in. Hard to find improvements that will bring them from 8.99 to 9.0.  And I have over 100K bookmarks and it works wonderfully.

Once I suggested that they might have an archive feature, where your pages could be kept on your disk, for those that vanish or become 404s. (A decent pct. can then be found in Archive.org. or by Google search.)  They actually were working on it a bit, I think they decided it was too much effort and complication for too little usage.

What a program! It is especially helpful as a research assistant. I group a topic with a keyword (e.g. the "real Nazareth" or "WooCommerce plugin") and when the topic comes up in discussion I quickly have my 5 or 50 urls on the topic, with some notes about what is in that page.  Also with Google books and Archive.org, I line it up in order and give each page of interest a description of what I found there.

Remember the predecessor, Powermarks :).

17
Linkman - just get the right .xpi (different .xpi for Chrome, Firefox Quantum, etc)
Download it and pick it up from the file search in extensions.

OneTab (also available on Chrome, Firefox Quantum etc)

========================

The KEY Reasons, especially 1-2

Tab Mix Plus
Roomy Bookmarks
Lazarus

(you can add some here - especially ones that do not have comparable functionality in the modern Chrome-Quantum worlds)

========================

Using Legacy Collector it takes five minutes to have these installed:
http://www.legacycollector.org/

I know this is a bit of a rehash.

And I still have reasons to use modern Chrome (e.g. Gmail utilities) and Firefox and others, but I think for now Pale Moon is the #1 for general browsing.

Waterfox might be just as good, just checked seems fine.
Cyberfox also loads those extensions.
No reason to work with Firefox 56 or 52.

BASIC CALENDAR "OVERLAY" NEED

Talking about single person calendars.
Yet multi sub-categories, like this:

Internet-Radio-TV
Christian Conferences
Financial
Auto
Business
Local Events

Input through Windows mostly.

And I just tried out Zoho, I actually was impressed with its sub-calendars that are all on the one screen, in the upper-left, with their own colors. You can check-mark which ones are active for the overlay aspect, which is what this post is mostly about.  One limitation, I don't think you can "Save" a view of say 5 of the 10 calendars you set up.  Nonetheless it is fine, easier than most I have seen.

==========================

EXTRAS

Possible +, not fundamental

shows on iPad  (ok, Android too)
groups of people, good for BIZ - (Zoho has that)
integration with email, task, notes etc. (not that important for me, since I am Rightnote and Eudora/TheBat! oriented)

A calendar entry is quick enough to enter. the 3-second saving from a Gmail is not important, since you always tweak them anyway.

=======================

TYPES OF CALENDARS

Different types of Windows-capable entry calendars, I think they go into 3 basic categories, although some may be hybrid. Free or pay is okay, but not a monthly fee above about $3. Some good calendars are embedded in PIMs (Efficient apparently broke theirs out) and some programs in the RightNote genre might surprise you with a good calendar implementation.  I'll make any adjustments to this as we go long. And I don't care much about importing or even exporting, this is meant to be the master that makes the rules. (Well, Facebook Events might be an exception, OneCalendar, not included, too simple, mentions that.)

==========================

Many of these are likely just too simple for the overlay requirement.

1) net-web online based
   Google, Zoho, Outlook, 30 boxes, Timetree, Fruux, SmartDay, Jorte, Cozi. DakBoard, MineTime

2) windows home-base - Vueminder, Thunderbird, Efficient, Rainlender (literally on the desktop)
   -- embedded in PIMS (Essential, Time&Chaos)

3) mobile-centric - Fantastical, Pimlical, Pocket Informant, PocketLife, Any.do, Business Calendar 2
  (I am not checking if they are Windows capable yet, however, these are more for Tablet Thinking)

==========================

So what works well?
Is Zoho one of the leaders from my requirements?

This is sort of a follow-up on an earlier 2016 thread that was a bit more tablet-centric.

calendar that is happy in Windows and on tablet

I've decided that for me data entry should be Windows based, either web or Desktop

General Software Discussion / cross-browser bookmark flexibility
« on: March 30, 2019, 07:38 PM »
First, let me say that I use Linkman as my all purpose bookmark keeper, and have it working excellently with multiple browsers at one time. Firefox Quantum ESR, Chrome, Pale Moon Waterfox, Opera and many others can all be used with Linkman. There is little or no architectural variance.  You get the Linkman button in the toolbar, and then add (using port 81, so as not to clash with Skype) and edit bookmarks either from the toolbar or from their drop basket, a frog which floats in the moat.  All excellent there, and highly recommended.  And I do lots of jiggling to keep information there, based on keyword linkage.

===============

My normal bookmarks, for super-quick access, work on the bookmark bar, about 20 folders - health, biz, puter, scripture, and lots of easy access stuff there.  And I like to drop new stuff in. I do not have to change the structure, e.g. adding folders, except every blue moon.

This bookmark bar can be replicated on Pale Moon, and any other browser that will import the file.

Right now I simply keep Firefox Quantum as my master, and switch back there when I want to add.

My goal is to be able to add to maybe 3 or more browsers that all have the same bookmark structure.  And then every once in a while, maybe weekly, put all the additions together.  If a subfolder was added in one browser, and a different subfolder was added in another browser, I would like both to be in the new master structure.  And I am not worried about deletions, changes of names and stuff like that. I would be aware than changing names would create duplicates.

Is this pseudo-synchronization idea feasible? How?

Your thoughts welcome!

Steven

When Abbyy or Screenshot ShareX or some program puts text in the clipboard, I would like to have a simple way to get rid of the line feeds, and also eliminate any hyphens at the end of the lines (before the line feed).

Then when I go to paste into, eg. a forum, I won't have to move around every line.

It looks like this is optionally done by some editors.

I could ask Abbyy or ShareX to give the option as an enehancement.

Any utilities you know that do the job?

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / email clients - special limited use
« on: January 28, 2019, 07:08 AM »
Currently I am using:

TheBat! on Windows 10 as my main email.  I have some mixed feelings, but overall it is OK.
Eudora has its own historic 50 GB archive that I use for searching.

However, these are a bit cumbersome for Biz usage, so many accounts, forum email etc.

Yes, I think you can run two instances of these programs with different target files, but I usually avoid that.

So now I am putting my biz email in a special redundant spot (using Gmail forwarding and filtering/forwarding) for POP download:
To have a special ultra-light Biz email spot on my Windows Puter client.

POP Email spot - paying a few dollars a month is fine, e.g.
.............................Fastmail, Runbox, Zoho, Posteo. 10 more

Fastmail, often the leader, surprised me with an App Password which felt clunky and I could not get it set up easily with Claws or EmClient
Runbox set up right away. it looks like a special might give me two yeas of Basic for about $35.

Since this is a POP download box, daily, hourly, es suficiente.

===============

Client -
..........................Claws, EmClient, Mailbird, Postbox, Thunderbird, Becky, Foxmail, Pegasus, Barca(Poco)

The Email program should still be developed, and have nice RTF-HTML editing, stable, decent filtering and searching, and it would be nice if it had virtual folders (as TheBat! has but Eudora does not). Forums like that available on TheBat! and Eudora are helpful. Oh, decent on flexible spoofing or reply:to capability.

Claws does not seem to have RTF editing, not even with a plug-in, at least on the new Windows version.

===============

Your thoughts. Especially on the Windows email client.

Well, I do have a Linux system coming in tonight ($30 Craigslist special, 6GB, Linux Mint 18).

General Software Discussion / offline browsing - archiving
« on: December 14, 2018, 07:31 AM »
My vBulletin forum www.purebibleforum.com , that I use mostly as a blog, has a glitch, pages changing to white no data occasionally.

PhP error, likely, according to the vBulletin forum, where they are helping the analysis.
https://www.vbulleti...becomes-white-screen

My plans are to consider a change of forum software, but that is really based on other considerations. Xenforo has made a big splash, and there is another I am checking out.  One good thing on vBulletin is that after my initial expense of a couple of hundred many years back, they have had virtually no additional expense. (I have skipped the upgrade to 5 anyway.)

Part of my solution was having the host (Liquid Web) give me an earlier version, I get the data of the one page, source, send it to some notes, and then put the regular MYSQL data back.  Something I should learn to do myself.  And that is working fine.

======================

In the midst of all that I figured this would be a superb time to really see if the website can be handled well by an offline browser.  I decided to try two that are free with decent reputations and reasonably active:

HttTrack - https://www.httrack.com/

CyoTech WebCopy - https://www.cyotek.com/cyotek-webcopy

======================

These things can be SLOW.

HttTrack has done 1 1/3 Gigabtye in about 13 hours.   My guess is that it is halfway done.
Cyotek seems similar.

Hmm.. I usually ignore multi-threaded download accelerators, they might help here.

Of course, this is something I might do once a month or two, unattended, so speed is not that important.

Your thoughts on the motif, tools, speed alternatives?

If I have an offline browser on my disk (the software changes all the urls to disk locations), and I have a website glitch on a single page/thread, I will not have to bother upstairs with the host. I could simply go to a functioning earlier version of that page, and in 10 minutes, rebuild it as a new thread. (The url will change, no big deal.)

Bits du Jour

PDF Studio 2018: All-in-one PDF software
http://www.bitsdujou...in=todays-deals-home

The comments are generally quite favorable.
OCR is included.

And I picked up SodaPDF on a recent Bits, however they do not include OCR in the Desktop version.
I do have Abbyy Finereader 12, which does have OCR.

Anyway, this may be one of the better $60 on sale Desktop PDF programs, which is a cluttered field.

Not too long ago, this was done by Chrome very elegantly.  You could create a shortcut, pin it to the taskbar, and make sure "open as window" was checked. And I would pin all sorts of stuff, like Lastpass, Protopage, Facebook and Messenger and Linoit and much more.  Stuff that I don't want to be thinking .. which browser, which window, which tab.  It is that way on my Desktop Windows 10, because I did it many months back on earlier Chrome versions. (Which makes me wonder about finding the right version and loading it for just that purpose, if possible.)

This is especially important for something like Lastpass, where the browser might close on a simple minimize, and you might have to reenter passwords. Also you want to get to it especially quickly, because you are checking something about a sites password other info. (Yes, the extensions for various browsers are supposed to help with that, but they are quirky.)

I read many articles, Google Chrome lost the feature, back and forth, up and down.

Microsoft Edge has an "almost". It pins to taslbar and opens to the browser (not in its own window.)  And e.g.with Lastpass minimizing closes the Vault (a Lastpass "feature".)

Still this might be the best way, since I don't use Edge for anything else.  Maybe if I just use it as my "Pinned Program" browser, I can regain some functionality?

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Steven

May be a way to diversify from Teamviewer.  Both have a free option, some comparisons in order.
