Post New Requests Here / Re: Finding the path of a file on your computer
« on: September 02, 2014, 09:48 AM »
Hi, I'm the developer of Listary, and I think Listary would be very helpful in your case (in a totally different way though).

You don't even need to find out where the file is saved. Listary will find it instantly and open it in the current application directly whenever you need it (as long as you can remember part of the file name).

(Listary just helped me upload this screenshot!)

Check out the latest version of Listary here: http://discussion.li...-beta-4-22-1679/1955

Anyone know if Listary 4 has been fixed to work on non-admin accounts? I have been running 3.51 for the past four months due to this issue :(.

Yes. Please use the beta version: http://discussions.listary.com/discussion/585

has anyone had Listary crashing upon startup? i see a message box asking permission to send a report then it crashes.

i'm on Win 7 Pro 64bit, btw.
I also have win7 64.  I don't think it has been crashing on startup, but the latest version did have a couple of regular crashes recently.  But upon relaunching, it seems to work.  i don't know the cause.

Please try the beta version: http://discussions.listary.com/discussion/585

@Channing: i was hoping to use Listary's FAYT feature in mouser's Screenshot Captor. the thumbnail browser (see pic) on the left of the program can be viewed in list mode. since i normally have 200-300 images in there, it would be an ideal place to use Listary to find the files quickly.

Sorry that Listary can't support it at the moment.

5
i assume this is where the custom apps go, but how do i add one? i don't see the 'add' button.

Listary 4 doesn't support adding custom applications  :( Which application you'd like to add?

6
@dr_andus

Yes. You'll get life-time updates for free.

I still recommend you try it first. You can reassign the Win + S hotkey to something like Ctrl + Shift + S easily in Listary Options - Hotkeys.

Hello evamaria,

Please download the portable version of Listary and try it yourself. No installation needed, and all Pro features are available for free trial (with some nag screens of course), you don't need to pay a single penny.

I'm sorry if Projects doesn't work in the way you expected, but your other judgments about Listary may be incorrect.

the "find as you type" functionality seems to be better implemented in QuickJump

Find as you type is a unique feature of Listary that is not available in any other application. It allows you to type the search term directly (without a hotkey) in your favorite file manager. Currently Windows Explorer, open/save file dialogs, XYplorer and xplorer2 are supported. Directory Opus will be supported next week (GPSoftware is kind enough to release a new version to support Listary).

Here is a screenshot of find as you type in XYplorer (open XYplorer, then type web directly)

xyplorer.png

The "back to previous" functionality can be replicated by macros (storing variables)

Sorry that I don't know what this is.

(and Listary's example for "fuzzy search" is horrible, would bring thousands of false hits in real life)

In most cases, what you're looking for is ranked top. Google always brings millions if not billions of false hits, but we really don't care because we know only the first few pages are useful.

For my a little bit amateurish comparison between Listary and QuickJump, I have positive news for Listary, though. In fact, I always made the difference between search for content, and just search for file and folder names, never mixed those up. But as incredible as it seems, QuickJump only searches for folder names, not file names, too.

Listary can search all your drives for files and folders by filename within 0.1 second literally (it takes Listary 0.085s to search my 1,200,000 files on 4 harddisks). I believe none of the other applications you mentioned can do this. It seems that you need to add folders to QuickJump manually for indexing.

(when I didn't think the necessary ">" sign in Listary for that was elegant, especially since it's three additional key pressings, shift-< and space).
1. You only need the leading ">" if you want to search across all drives. Without it Listary will search within your current folder (which is what you need in most situations).
2. The space after ">" is not required.
3. You can change ">" in Listary Options to something like "/" to save the "Shift".

I highly recommend you try Listary yourself. Even if it's not exactly a virtual folder manager you're looking for, I'm sure you'll fall in love with it  :-*

Hello everyone, developer of Listary here.

Unfortunately, it doesnt seem to work with Dopus...

Listary won't show up automatically in DOpus, please press the hotkey Win + S (or Win + W if you upgraded from version 3) to activate it manually.

Also, it apparently needs admin privileges to run, so it doesn't start with Windows automatically anymore.
I have the same problem as Jibz. It does autostart, but asks for admin privileges. Probably need to contact the developer about it.

Listary 4 needs to be run as administrator. If you're using a standard user account you created yourself, you may be out of luck. I'm working on a solution to let Listary run at startup under non-admin accounts now.

I wish it just had its old clean interface back. (The one thing I like about the new Fuzzy Search feature is that I can disable it...)

The old UI is too small to display full paths which are necessary for the new features in v4. We have to move on :)

Thanks rjbull for the post, and thanks Curt for the replies

I'm glad to announce that Listary Pro will be featured on BitsDuJour again on Friday 19 October at the dramatically reduced price of $9.95 (51% off).
Check it out!

P.S. A totally new version of Listary (Listary 4 beta) will be out with this promotion.

I have a license too, and although I assumed that the upgrade policy was the same as the "if you purchase now" deal, darned if I can find anything about it on their web site...  anyone know what the policy was moving from version 2 to 3  (I wasn't around back then)?  Given the "and all future version" wording in this deal, I'd be pretty disappointed if current licensees get charged...

Sorry to make you confused. The upgrade policy is not changed. You'll always get lifetime upgrade for free.

11
I tried my editor Notetab Pro with the Listary settings above, and asked Notetab to open a file with the standard WIndows File Open dialog.  Alt-tabbing between TC and Notetab didn't switch the File Open dialog to the folder TC was pointing to.  You might contact the author to be sure, though.
You're right. Quick Switch (and other features) won't work if you uncheck "Enable Listary for this application".

12
i hv a slightly OT question. is it possible to turn off this "Find as You Type" (FAYT) feature? instead, i would like to use Listary for the "Quick Switch" feature and "Favorites" menu.
Sorry that disabling FAYT is not supported in the current version. In Listary 4 you can configure the toolbar to not show up automatically when you type and trigger it via hot key manually.

Curt, thank you for the information. I'm looking into it.

I will probably buy a license all the same,(lifetime key!), but I am confused that my copy of Listary will not start with Windows; I mark the option, but it doesn't do it. I wonder if there are other features that will turn out to not be working. I have tested the free version a couple of times, but always removed it again because I have a few similar programs  that does what I want  the way I want it. However, Listary is being updated, the others are not.

----
I have of course manually added Listary to (a delayed) Start.

Weird bug, I've never seen this before. Could you please help me run a quick test?

1. Open Listary Options > General, unmark "Start Listary when Windows starts", and click OK.
2. Open Options again, mark "Start Listary when Windows starts" this time and click OK.
3. Open regedit and check if there is a REG_SZ value in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" named "Listary" pointing to the correct path of Listary executable (something like "C:\Program Files\Listary\Listary.exe")

Thanks for your time, looking forward to your reply.

Hello guys, Listary Pro will be on Bits du Jour for $9.95 (50% off) on 17 December.
The link is http://www.bitsdujour.com/software/listary-pro-2/
Enjoy it ;D

Hello guys,

Sorry for any inconvenience. The updater doesn't work because I haven't used it to promote the new version yet. 3.50 is a stable version, but there are still tons of new features to add. I keep releasing a new version every two or three days recently and don't want to bother you guys with the "new version" dialog.

Please don't hesitate to post here or contact with me at [email protected] if you find some bugs or have any suggestions for the new version.

How does this works? Some kind of DDE? SendMessage?
In most situations it will use clipboard for better compatibility since SendMessage only work with standard controls (e.g. it's impossible to use SendMessage to get/set text for a text area on a webpage).

18
Can one set a different key combination? (I have no Windows key.)
-cranioscopical (July 28, 2011, 10:10 PM)
Yes, you can set your own hot key in Options.

FYI, the link to the portable version download is pointing to the setup exe 8)
Fixed now. Thank you!

Channing:  there's a typo on the "Test Editor Anywhere" page. A section heading says: "Text Editor Anyehere - Edit Text Anywhere with Your Favorite Editor".
Also fixed. Thanks for your feedback!

Hello all,

I'm glad to share Text Editor Anywhere 2 with you. It used to be a built-in feature of Listary, and now is a standalone freeware app. I rewrote it from scratch and added a bunch of useful new features.

Text Editor Anywhere allows you to edit text anywhere with your favorite text editor (and with a specified file extension). It provides a means of taking advantages of some advanced features (like auto-completing, spell checking and syntax highlighting) that are only available in an external text editor. It may also save you from webpage time-out or browser crashes.

  • Support all kinds of text editors
  • Support all applications
  • Support Unicode
  • You can pass complex parameters to the editor

It's very easy to use. Here is how I use it to edit this post in Firefox with BBCeditor by fenixproductions:

Step 1: Press Win + A whenever you need it. You can hold Win key and press "A" repeatedly to choose another file extension or edit the text with a new extension. It works like Alt + Tab.

Step 2: Edit the text in the editor.

2.png

Step 3: Save the file and close the editor (BBCeditor here) or simply switch back using Alt + Tab, my post is already in Firefox!

Taking a look at this today, and the first thing I notice is a keyboard shortcut conflict between Listary and Xplorer2.

Thank you very much for the feedback. I've just made some changes. The hot keys are "smarter" now - they will only work when they need to (in Explorers and file open/save dialog for example), and won't conflict with xplorer2 anymore.

Please download the latest version here.

P.S. Listary can add find-as-you-type feature to xplorer2, please view this post on xplorer2 forum.

Second thing I discovered was that I can't add my own favourites in the free edition. this is a great shame, since this feature is perhaps the one in which I am most interested, as Listary might be a replacement for my current dialog extender.

I understand that you need to keep some features back for the commercial version, but perhaps allowing 1 or 2 user defined favourites, to see how the system works, might be a better enticement to upgrade?

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll think about it.

21
You dont have any trial, do you ?
Sorry that no trial of pro version is available.

Could someone install the free version on a work machine to test it for a limited time (e.g. in my case I have two pc's, both are shared between work & personal stuff - I'm self-employed & work from home.)
Yes, please feel free to try it.

22
I don't know where to find "/"... on your keyboard,
but on mine it is above "7"; you know: shift+7
-meaning that non-americanized keyboard users only fully can use the $20 PRO version?

Other than that, I am impressed.
Wow, I've never heard of a keyboard layout like that. "/" is on the bottom left corner in the standardized layout, and I thought it was easy to press. I'll make this key configurable in future versions.
2010-07-11 03 43 48.png

You can use hot keys to run commands as shown in the video if you really hate "Shift" 8). Everything mentioned in the video and the post is available in the freeware version of Listary, and you don't need to purchase the pro version if you use Listary only at home (not in your office).

23
I'll have to give this a whirl soon, it looks like it does quite a lot, and the website you have for it is perfect as I am thinking of how to design a page for my NANY 2011 app (see sig). From the screencast I had the impression it takes up a lot of hotkeys but I'll assume it's customizable.

Yes, everything is customizable: the hotkeys, the commands and the folder names.

24
Thank you all! Please help spread the word if you like it  ;D

Which Linux app gave the comparable features to Listary?

It seems that there isn't an app that can do exactly the same thing in Linux, but most lists in Gnome have a build-in search box that allows you to select an item by typing the first few letters. Although this is not "search", I think it's still much better compared to Windows: you know what you've typed, you can fix typos and you don't need to fight with time-out.
